‘Summer Sun, Winter Trees’ is Eve Goodman’s debut album, having released the EP ‘Wave Upon Wave’ previously.
As Eve explains, “These songs are a capture of my moods, my headspace, and the symbols and imagery that arose from my subconscious and found their way into my words during a time of deep grief, in the months and years after my dear Dad chose to end his life in 2017. My hope is that this album shines a light on the nuances of grief and its myriad of accompanying emotions. That these songs can be a balm for the healing process.”
Eve wrote all the music and lyrics, as well as playing acoustic guitar and shruti box, with Luke Evans producing and playing all the other instruments.
Hard to choose highlights as the whole album sits together neatly. That said, ‘Why?’ is one of the most moving songs you’ll hear this year. Also, one of the most moving lyrics on the album.
The Welsh song ‘Pellter’, is one of those perfect songs for a Sunday afternoon or late-night listening. ‘Jay Feather’ gets a special mention to as it is one of those songs you’d love to hear performed live.
A very personal album, however, one that the listener can identify with, and Eve’s voice is exquisite. Reminiscent of the melodic tone of Edwina Hayes and the passion of Nanci Griffith. Stunningly beautiful music. ****
