Eyes Of Power is a 2010 album recorded by the Slovak Power Metal band, Signum Regis, recently remixed and remastered.
It’s the third from a 13 album back catalogue to undergo a retooling job. Again, remastering has burnished the music to a brilliant metalised sheen.
The band’s founding member, songwriter and bass man, Ronnie Konig wrote The Eyes Of Power material with then vocalist, Goran Edman, one of Europe’s leading rock and metal front men.
It’s a concept album. But before you roll your eyes, immerse yourself in the music. Lyrically fresh and invigorating, it takes the subject of Roman/Persian hostilities 1500 years ago as its narrative foundation.
The band carry us through this volatile period in European history with poise and panache.
The lyrics are clever, they have something to say about the nature of history, storytelling and the heroes and villains it creates, and how we invest in opposing points of view.
The music is imaginative, not phrased in the traditional Heavy Metal grammar of music making. You can almost feel the constant seismic rumble of Konig’s carefully calibrated bass work, particularly on ‘Dura Europos’ and ‘One Fatal Enterprise’, deftly avoiding the clang and thump free-for-all that blights so much heavy metal nowadays.
Felip Kolus’s lead guitar is wielded like the sharpest of weapons, delivering laceratingly beautiful axework on ’Renewal In The East’ and creating some moving chord progressions on ‘The Underground Temples Of Mithras’.
The arrangements are spiced with eastern musical flavouring, adding a sense of the exotic to the music.
Add that to Edman’s emphatically commanding vocals and we have something (old and) new, something special. ****
