Coming out of gig retirement (well apart from the excellent folk gigs at Harwell Village Hall) for a rather fine night for hard rock.
Second time at The Acoustic Couch, which sadly is nearing its end as a live venue due to its lease not being renewed in August. The Acoustic Couch runs as a not-for-profit Community Interest Company and they have a fundraising page to try & raise enough funds to find a new home for live music in Bracknell. If you can please help the venue out, even by just sharing their fundraising links to gain more awareness.
Onto the music and rising rockers Revenant, who I heartily recommend you track down their ‘Best Medicine’ EP. The band consists of Sugarman Sam (vocals, guitars), Matthew Hudson (guitars), the impossibly tall Robin Nutley (bass) and Carl D (drums) who looked a bit like Glen Danzig!
Live they are a lively bunch with Sugarman Sam coming across as powerfully on vocals as he does on record. Songs like ‘Public Service Announcement’, and their best song to date, ‘Back to Life’, sound even heavier live – yet never lose the melody – and show why this band are gaining such well deserved rave reviews, as well as increasing their fan base. Go see them at the Maid of Stone festival next month.
The Darker My Horizon are now into their tenth year, with a recently released new album ‘From Out of the Ashes’. Vocalist & guitarist Paul Stead is the only original member left and he is joined by guitarist Jamie Bannon, bassist Mike Wrigglesworth and drummer Russ Barnett.
Kicking off with ‘Hate’ from the aforementioned new album, the Darker My Horizon soon hit their stride and proceed to play a set full of melodic hard rock goodness. Heck, we even get a power ballad ‘In the End’, which doesn’t sound out of place in a set that includes the rifftastic ‘Gaslight’ and ‘Functional Dysfunctional’, the latter with its instant chorus, should be on the likes of Planet Rock’s daytime playlist.
The Darker My Horizon definitely set out to have fun both on stage and off, with the audience loving it, especially those enthusiastically pogoing around to the set’s closing anthem ‘Still Alive’.
Two bands, both performing their own original music and putting on a live show that leaves the audience leaving with a big smile on their faces. This is what rock n roll is all about…
