Album review: THREE DAYS GRACE – Alienation

THREE DAYS GRACE - Alienation

RCA Records [Release date 22.08.25]

The main recent development for Three Days Grace is the return of original vocalist Adam Gontier who now shares duties with Matt Walst (who replaced him in 2013).

Formed in the late 1990s in Ontario, the band ushered in the early millennium with their own brand of post-grunge/nu-metal. This genre is seeing something of a revival and TDG have every right to be at the forefront.

‘Alienation’ the band’s follow-up to ‘Explosions’ (2022) lyrically reflects a range of modern ills, and maybe reflecting Gontier’s own personal struggles as evidenced on the superb ‘Apologies’.

Caffeine, nicotine, amphetamines
Running through my bloodstream
Trauma, drama, another vodka
Turn into a monster

The quality level of this album is maintained throughout with every track offering an immediate fix for the listener, heavy as hell riffs combine with anthemic choruses. In fact, every track is single length and single quality. The dual vocal thing works well too.

For this listener the only missing ingredient is some guitar solo-ing but the emphasis is on strong melody and vocal hooks. ‘In Waves’ remains my favourite but there’s great consistency overall. ‘In Cold Blood’, another highlight, brings to mind bands like Disturbed.  Ditto ‘Another Relapse’.

Long-term fans will relish this new offering and not least Gontier’s return. Newcomers will find much to enjoy. Alienation is relentlessly great. *****
