Published by Fonthill
This book is a real labour of love written by long time fan Bill Voccia. Bill has been collecting AC/DC memorabilia for many years and has contributed to several other publications before compiling his own tomb. He has also previously been responsible for managing content and providing historical information to the bands website, so there is no doubt that Bill knows his stuff.
The book documents all of AC/DC’s studio albums in chronological order and gives a full song by song rundown. The introduction to each album gives a breakdown of release date, band personnel on the album, where it was recorded, who the producer was and worldwide chart positions. Bill also gives some ‘notable info’ for each release from his vast historic band knowledge.
The main content though is a breakdown of each song, with Bill giving his thoughts on the content, lyrics and composition. The thing with AC/DC is that the majority of their songs tend to be about three things: bad girls, bad boys and rock n roll, so a song by song guide very quickly becomes very repetitive.
Bill does his best to come up with imaginative ways to say a song is about ‘getting it on’ or hard living, but over the course of 18 albums (plus a B side and oddity rundown) and 188 pages, it does get a little tiresome. There is also some passages which have been edited quite badly which led to having to re-read some sections to fully understand what was being said.
You can, however, see that this is a work of passion for Bill and that he really knows his subject. There is also a few pages given over to pictures of single and album covers from Bill’s collection to illustrate some of his comments in the ‘notable info’ sections.
This book is really one for the die hard AC/DC completists rather than the casual listener. It could also be a good introduction to the AC/DC back catalogue if you want an in-depth guide and some ‘must hear’ track recommendations from a leading authority on all things ‘DC.
