Gig review: SUZI QUATRO – New Theatre, Oxford, 12 April 2026

sq2

This fan may have just been starting out in primary school when Suzi Quatro had her first UK number with ‘Can the Can’ in 1973, however, it was still a great moment to finally see her live on stage. Big crowd too, which is not bad for a Sunday night in Oxford as never an easy place to get to and from by public transport and good to see some younger fans dotted around the audience.

Kicking off the set with ‘The Wild One’, Suzi Quatro had the crowd on her side from the off. ‘Mama’s Boy’ was done with a tongue in cheek dedication to a gentleman volunteered by his female companion, whilst ‘I Bit Off More Than I Could Chew’ was another chance for the band to show their musical prowess. On ‘Stumblin’ In’, guitarist Tim Smith handled the parts sung by Chris Norman on the original.

’48 Crash’ got the biggest cheer of the first set and Suzi Quatro still had that trademark scream on the chorus.

A lively run through the Neil Young classic ‘Rockin’ in the Free World’, led to a total change of pace as Suzi took to the piano and performed ‘Can I Be Your Girl?’ solo, to close the first set.

The second set started with ‘Freedom’, the title track from her recently released album, closely followed by ‘Little Miss Lovely’, also from the new album, and a damn fine rock n roll tune it is too! Proof Suzi Quatro is not one to just play the hits and is still recorded new music, much of it co-written with her son RL Tuckey.

Another lively cover, this time Creedence Clearwater Revival’s ‘Bad Moon Rising’, followed by ‘Ain’t Ya Somethin’ Honey’, leading into her 1979 hit ‘She’s in Love With You’. The set jumps around timeline wise as next was ‘Shine a Light’, recorded with KT Tunstall on their 2023 album ‘Face to Face’. The lights from the audience’s mobiles added a little bit of sparkle, even if a few folks had trouble turning the torch function on their phones…

A bass and drum duet may not be on many gig goers bingo card, yet when you have Suzi Quatro duetting with drummer Tim Reyland, it soon becomes a set highlight. Both are very talented musicians and Tim likes a bit of cowbell – good man! Suzi joined Tim for a duel drum intro to ‘Can the Can’, that needless to say had the crowd up and clapping & dancing away. Leading neatly into ‘Devil Gate Drive’, the years rolled back and the music did the talking.

Sadly with a last train to Didcot calling it meant having to miss the encores which include another Suzi Quatro solo on the piano with ‘Singing With Angels’.

Watching Suzi Quatro perform live reminded me of another Detroit legend Alice Cooper, as both love a bit of Vaudeville and theatrics, yet at their heart they are both rock n rollers and we’re lucky both are still enjoying touring, and most importantly, playing each show with power and passion. No surprise then that the latest single of her new album is a cover of the MC 5 classic ‘Kick Out the Jams’ with the aforementioned Mr Cooper.

Rock n roll is in safe hands with Suzi Q.
