Album review: MAIAH WYNNE – Into The Waves

Maiah Wynne has been making music since she was seven and has been an integral part of Envy of None, who also feature Rush’s Alex Lifeson and Coney Hatch’s Andy Curran amongst their line-up. On this, Maiah’s second album, she has written, self-produced and largely recorded the whole thing, with a few guests including cellist Bethany Joyce, violinist Avelyn Reynolds, guitarist Brooks Berg, drummers Adam Brzycki and Randy Cooke, flugelhorn player Henry Sheppard, and Rush’s Alex Lifeson.

Maiah has released four songs ahead of the album, namely ‘Breathe’, ‘See the Water’, ‘Don’t Wait’ and the most recent, and heaviest song on the album, ‘False Gods’. Of these ‘Breathe’ is the album’s stand out as it highlights her ethereal and melodic vocals. Think Enya less the overt synths backing. ‘Don’t Wait’ comes a close second. A wonderfully melodic indie pop song that will appeal to fans of Laufey and beebadoobee. In an ideal world this song would be all over the airwaves and streaming playlists.

Aside from the singles, ‘In A Dream’ is just that, a lovely bit of dreamy pop. Maiah does have a distinct folk side to her musical repertoire, with ‘See the Water’ and ‘Satellites’, which should be an instant pick on any modern folk playlist.

There is no filler on here and you could argue any of these songs could be released as singles, something that is certainly true of ‘Another Step’. Big, instant chorus and lots going on musically. Special mention to the backing harmonies on this one which are simply wonderful.

Maiah Wynne has produced a remarkably atmospheric and melodic album that stands up as one of the albums of the year. The more you listen to it the more you love it. ****
