Album review: MISHRA – Reclaim

MISHRA - Reclaim

Shedbuilt Records [Release date 29.10.21]

Described as a “global folk collective” Mishra brings together banjo player Kate Griffin (The Magpies) and flautist Ford Collier (The Drystones) who fashion a contemporary take on folk fusion.  Together with their cohorts tabla player John Ball (who taught the couple at Sheffield University), double bassist Joss Mann-Hazell and singer/clarinet player Alex Lyon.

The contemporary edge is mostly provided by Griffin’s vocal.  I was reminded throughout of Capercaillie, great trailblazers in terms of folk fusion but with celtic roots.  Whilst much is made of Mishra’s Indian classical influences lovers of Celtic folk fusion will find much to like here.  There are also similarities to early Larkin Poe with their roots and Americana influences.

‘Second Line’ is like the band’s take on ‘La Bamba’ (which originated as a Mexican folk song) evidencing their straight forward infectiousness.  There is no doubting the instrumental prowess on show – on tracks like ‘Reel To Reel’, ‘Reclaim’ and the “bonus” track ‘Burn Jam’.

The band received acclaim for their debut ‘The Loft Tapes’ in 2019 and the newly converted will want to seek that out too.  ****
