KING MOB – Force 9

SPV 2012

This band were formed by vocalist Stephen Parsons and guitarist Chris Spedding (both ex Sharks), also featuring former Pretenders drummer Martin Chambers and original Sex Pistols bassist Glen Matlock.

The music mixes rock’n’roll, beat and a myriad of other rock infused styles.

Opener “Lover of High Renown” has a rhythm libelously close to ZZ Tops’ La Grange, the lead guitar vocals providing a different melody. A decent song though. “Who’s Chasing Who”, a solid and punchy number, but again has a familiar feel  (think of a certain Willie Dixon song).

“Va Va Voom” is catchy, retro, while “Secret Song” has a polished 60s garage meets r’n’b feel.

“American Slave” is more harsh rock’n’roll with a touch of rockabilly.

The pace of the different tracks is nicely varied, the mood from dark / moody to uplifting. “I Was There” is a stand out track, a nod to Spedding’s own Motorbikin’.

Some parts will seem over familiar but overall as enjoyable as it is retro.
