JOB FOR A COWBOY – Demonocracy

I will be the first to admit the first time I heard Job For A Cowboy I was not impressed. They simply had a sound that didn’t really appeal to me. After seeing them recently on The Metal Alliance tour then finally hearing their latest release on Metal Blade Records Demonocracy, I have since changed my mind. Still insanely heavy and brutal as ever, what has changed significantly is the dynamics of the music. Before the songs were very same sounding with very little in the way of change ups. Now they have added a sense of melody, guitar solos, and have taken their music into a more progressive realm while still maintaining their signature brutality. These few changes, and possibly changes within myself, have made me decide I am now a fan.
Demonocracy is their fifth album, and beyond a shadow of a doubt their best album ever. Perhaps the addition of former Despised Icon guitarist Tony Sannicandro who brings an “old school approach to the band” makes all the difference in the world. As a lover of the guitar, I’m damn glad of this change. Songs like “Children of Deceit,” “Tongueless and Bound,” and “The Deity Misconception” highlight the brutality of vocalist Jonny Davey, the guitar brilliance of Sannicandro and Al Glassman, the sonic power of drummer Jon “Charn” Rice, and other new member ex-Cephalic Carnage bassist Nick Schendzielos’ bass calisthenics. It would not surprise me if there was a rash of heads snapping off while banging their heads to this magnificent release. Not only is the music brutal, but so are the lyrics. Unlike most of their death metal contemporaries, JFAC sing more about politics and current events than about death and carnage. This also sets them apart from most bands of this type.
If Job for A Cowboy stays on their current path and continue to put out top notch metal as is found on Demonocracy, then I see no reason for them to not convert all fans of extreme music to their fold. The album is sheer brilliance and brutality rolled up into one. This is definitely a CD I will be listening to a lot over the years.
