AFFINITY – The Baskervilles Reunion September 10th 2011

A reunion concert for a group of musicians who last appeared on stage as the Baskervilles some 46 years ago. The Baskervilles morphed into Affinity, hence the band’s name on the CD. The night featured amongst others Mo Foster, Ray Russell, Brian Davis and Glyn James along with guest musicians including Linda Hoyle and Gary Husband.
Musically it is like a top draw covers band as they run through a series of 50′s and 60′s standards from amongst others the Beatles, the Byrds, the Stones and a moving verison of Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘Sound Of Silence’. Each song ends with polite applause which reminds you it is live but I am sure on the night the crowd had a good time.
By no means essential an interesting one for collectors and fans of the many and varied works from Mo Foster, Ray Russell and Gary Husband.

TAURUS TRAKKER – A Rakket U Trust (EP)
West London band’s new EP, five new songs that are less blues than their last album, there’s def some punk in here, almost psychedelic pub rock. The opening title track has a catchy riff, the second track mixes proto Sex Pistols with Syd Barrett. There’s some 60s psychedelia mixed with a West Coast twang later on too.
Well worth checking out.

TYGERS OF PAN TANG – Ambush
Rocksector Records
The NWoBHM legends are back with a rather good new album. With ever present Robb Weir on guitar, and some classic metal vocals from Jacopo Meille, it’s solid stuff from the outset.
With production from Chris Tsangarides you know it will sound good. Opener Keeping Me Alive is uptempo and uplifting, These Eyes is a little moodier. One Of A Kind has a great riff, and Rock & Roll Dream is a little dirtier.
There’s a good balance of early rock’n’roll and some of the later polish, and at times the vocalist sounds like Excalibur’s Paul McBride.
With some good songs and great solos, it’s a solid and consistent album, and with some rather excellent artwork from Rodney Matthews, it’s well worth investing in.

STAIND -Live From Mohegan Sun (DVD)
Eagle Vision
American post grunge metal band Staind are filmed here live in Connecticut in 2011, to an enthusiastic crowd. The music is post grunge, nu and alternative so I have to admit it’s really not my thing (sludge and dirge being complimentary), but for a live show, it is energetic and well filmed, the band are visual and there is some talk with the crowd. The music ranges from depressive to upbeat, the nu metal racket I can really do without though.
The set opens with the hit Eyes Wide Open, and fans might enjoy Not Again, Right Here and So Far Away. There’s a light show and a singalong in For You.
The live show is 80 minutes but there’s plenty of bonus including band interviews.
Nu fans will enjoy, but a rather too monotonous for me.

ELDORADO – Antigravity Sound Machine
Cargo
New album from this Madrid based outfit who have set up their own crowd funded label (distributed by Cargo) and it’s fiery and honest rock/metal album that mixes classic metal with touches of punk and alt. It sounds spontaneous from the outset.
The vocals touch on gravel and there’s punchy guitar to match. The influences mix Bad Company, Deep Purple and Led Zep but it’s stripped down and raw by comparison. Like A Lost Child stands out – great power and melody and the keyboards work well. The production from Richard Chycki (Aerosmith, Rush, Dream Theater) adds an extra dimension.
Well worth exploring – A genuinely good album.

SONDURA -You Remain (EP)
Released 15th October
Sondura released their debut album in 2009 and this EP acts as a stop gap with two new songs and three songs of their debut album, until the new album is out next spring. The two new songs ‘You Remain’ and ‘New Beginnings’ sound like a more metal Nickelback or Alter Bridge in their prime. Both songs have hooks that will prove a hit. Of the older songs ‘Live Before You Die’ is fine until the cookie monster vocals kick in but the slower paced ‘Falling Free’ allows vocalist Tom Watson a chance to strut his stuff. With his swopping vocals Myles Kennedy comes to mind.
Enough here to satisfy existing fans until their new album and of definite interest to thoise new the band’s music.

DEE DELROY WILLIAMS – Singer Man
SunSka Released 8th October
Dee Delroy Williams is a key figure in the reggae field and this new album is a mix of originals and covers. I must admit along with dance music reggae is not my cup of tea but this album is nice for a little variety. The covers tweak the interest most, with Blondie’s ‘The Tide Is High’ gaining a whole new lease of life, as does U2′s ‘I Still Haven’t Found What I am Looking For’. Even the old Boney M classic ‘By The Rivers Of Babylon’ is covered!
For lovers of reggae a bit four stars and one for loud stereos and summer nights…
