MAGICA – Centre of the Great Unkown

AFM Records

Magica are a new one on me even though this is there 6th album. The band was formed back in 2002 by guitarist Bogdan Costea and is from Romania which might go someway as to explaining why they have never caught my attention. The biography describes them as female fronted melodic metal and I suppose that is as good a description as any.

Led from the front by the powerful vocals of Ana Mladinovici the overall sound of Magica has probably hardened up due to the replacement of their keyboard player with a second guitarist in the shape of Emilian Burcea.

The main problem that I have is that none of the songs really stand out – they all sort of wash over you and leave nothing behind.

Europe has produced a lot of high quality female fronted symphonic metal bands such as Epica, Nightwish, After Forever and their ilk but Magica, with their simpler sound, don’t have the magic (sorry about that…) of these bands and on the quality of this release are in a much lower division fighting with the likes of Lullacry.

Must try harder next time. Nice cover artwork though…
