Album review: PICTUREHOUSE – Evolution

PictureHouse - Evolution

Cherry Red Records [Release date 04.08.14]

Irish band PictureHouse enjoyed success in their homeland during the 1990’s and early 2000’s, reuniting recently after a ten year break. This album was released in Ireland last year and now gets a UK release.

Starting off with The Feeling-sounding ‘Some Night She Will Be Mine’ (also on the album as a bonus song recorded live for the Today FM show), the album has a real positive vibe running through the lyrics and music.

Vocalist Dave Browne has a lovely soothing vocal on the quieter songs such as ‘Hello’ (also featured as a live bonus song). ‘Every Step Of The Way’ will certainly pull at a few heart strings. The band has the knack of producing pop tunes that don’t get to MOR. Heck, for fellow ELO fans like me they can enjoy the vocal arrangements on ‘Having It My Way’, another single in waiting.

I’ve already reviewed the single ‘Rules Of Science’, a song that sticks with the listener after the first listen and you will keep playing it again and again believe you me. For a little rock ‘n’ roll shuffle look no further than ‘Papers In The Park’, a fun tune with doo wop vocals and classy piano playing. There is even a nice bit of whistles and pipes on ‘Our Inner Voices’, giving the song a nice folk air about it.

Feel good and well crafted pop rock, perfect for daytime airplay on BBC Radio 2 and those who like strong and memorable melodies. They may have been a well kept secret in Ireland to date but now it is time for the rest of the world to discover PictureHouse’s musical delights. ****
