This is the second album by the Swedish sleaze rockers Dust Bowl Jokies following on from their debut released back in 2012. Swaggering sleaze/ glam rock is the order of the day here with hints of the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith and fellow Swede Michael Monroe.
Musically it’s all about the big hooks and catchy riffs with guitarists Nicke and Tell creating the meat of each track. Frontman Alexx has a good vocal range and a voice which fits the sleaze rock bill well. I did review the band’s first album and you can certainly see a progression in the song writing and playing, the intervening four years have obviously been well spent.
There is a lot to like here from the rocking sounds of ‘Mama Cocha’ and ‘Hogs and Heifers’ to the more laid back sound on ‘Rawbone’. The guys do like to throw in the odd curveball musically with songs taking an unexpected twist from time to time which brought to mind the 90’s rockers Love/Hate. On ‘Old Fashioned Country Canvas’ the band introduce a bit of wailing saxophone into the mix which was good to hear.
This is a good album from a band with attitude and talent in equal measure. If they can keep the momentum and pace of development they have shown in the past few years then they could be on to a winning formula. ***
