Album review: LOS PACAMINOS – Reissues

LOS PACAMINOS A Fistful Of Statins/The Early Years

LOS PACAMINOS A Fistful Of Statins/The Early Years

Recdo Records [Release date 06.05.16]

Los Pacaminos I remember seeing live a few years ago at the Borderline  and they played an enjoyable, high energy show. The band play a mix of Tex-Mex, country and Americana, yet they hail from the UK.  Their line-up includes Paul Young (he of the 80′s hits including ‘Wherever I Lay My Hat’) and guitarist Jamie Moses (Queen/SAS Band). Sadly a key member of the band and their sound, accordionist/keyboards player Matty Irving, passed away last year.

‘A Fistful Of Statins’ was originally released last year and has now been re-issued with three new songs. One of these is the Bee Gees’ classic ‘Words’, sung in Spanish and the band are helped out by Mariachi el Mexicano, the UK’s premier mariachi band. It sounds an unlikely combination yet works really well.

The songs are often storytelling ones like forbidden love or ones that have you imagining some border town on the US/Mexican border in the wild west days. ‘Every Little Hero’ has  a hint of ZZ Top from their 70′s output, especially in the vocals and the instrumental opener ‘Razor Wire’ is like the Shadows by way of Ennio Morricone’s western scores.

‘The Early Years’ is the band’s self-titled 2002 album with a hard to find EP added on as a bonus. This album has more good time songs like ‘My, My, My’ and ‘Two Margaritas’. Maybe not as strong overall as the ‘A Fistful Of Statins’ album and if you have to pick one being new to the band, I’d plump for the latter.

Go see them live if you get the chance (and you can rest assured Donald Trump won’t be in attendance) and these two albums are a treat for their existing and new fans.  ***1/2
