The Peawees hail from Italy and have been playing their infectious brand of rock ‘n’ roll meets garage rock & power pop for over twenty years. They have toured with the likes of the Damned, the Sonics and the Dictators to name but a few.
‘Moving Target’ marks the Peawees first new album in eight years and it is a fast and furious rock ‘n’ roll ride. From the opening refrains on ‘Walking Through My Hell’, the listener is transported back to the late 70′s/early 80′s and the sounds of New Wave/power pop. This is reinforced by singer Herve Peroncini who sounds uncannily like Elvis Costello from that era.
The Peawees do proper rock ‘n’ roll - the guitar solos and twang on ‘A Reason Why’ is stunning, whilst the chorus is an instant hit on the ears. On this song and a couple of others they reminded me of Donnie Iris & the Cruisers in the way they effortlessly produce sublime harmony filled choruses.
They pay homage to the Spector Wall Of Sound on ‘Phil Spector’, a rollicking piece of musical action. Although most of the songs clock in at under three minutes, the album finishes with the six minutes plus of ‘Til My Mojo Works’, a furious mix of guitars, tight rhythm section and harmonica supplied by Filippo Garill.
Special mention to Carlo Maria Toller who lays down some lightning fast piano playing throughout the album, giving an extra edge to the rock ‘n’ roll fun on each song.
To use part of Lemmy’s famous quote, these are the Peawees and they play rock ‘n’ roll. ****
