Gig review: P!NK – Wembley Stadium, 30 June 2019

P!nk may not be a name you’d necessarily associate with rock, however the warm-up DJ KidCutUp mixed a fair few classic rock tunes into his set plus a nice touch to have Freddie Mercury’s ‘Ay oh’ in the mix, made even more poignant seeing the sell-out crowd singing along on the same site Freddie did all those years ago at Live Aid. Also P!nk’s entry song was the Whitesnake classic ‘Here I Go Again’ (the original Moody Marsden version nonetheless).

P!nk started off with a bang with ‘Get The Party Started’, which it certainly did and the song ended with fireworks preceded by plenty of on-stage energy that many other performers would usually end their set with. From then on in it was a rollercoaster ride of music and visual spectacle, not only with P!nk’s various acrobatics but the choreographed dance sequences where she is joined by a group of dancers to enact various songs (her young daughter made a cameo cartwheeling appearance in one song to a rousing reception from the crowd).

The setlist had plenty of her classics including ‘Just Like A Pill’, ‘Funhouse’ (introduced by a rather disturbing animated short0 and ‘Just Like Fire’, the latter complete with flaming stage effects, an aural and visual feast. The newer songs of her recent number one album ‘Hurts 2 Be Human’ like the jive/swing of ‘Hustle’ and ’90 Days’, where she was joined by Wrabel who dueted with her on the album, fitted seamlessly into the setlist.

P!nk did a few covers including ‘River’ by up and coming British artist Bishop Briggs and a wonderful acoustic version of the Cyndi Lauper classic ‘Time After Time’. That on its own would have been a showstopper if not for all the other great songs she sang throughout the evening.

Just when you think she has pulled out all the visual tricks, P!nk goes for an aerial ride over the crowd to the back of the stadium. Amazing to see and she still kept on singing, ably assisted by the talented backing singers Jenny Douglas (often seen in Toto’s live set-up) and Stacy Campbell.

The whole band were on top form and their ranks included madcap drummer Mark Schulman (Foreigner, Sheryl Crow) and guitarist Justin Derrico, who P!nk joked changed guitar more times than she had costume changes!

P!nk certainly knows how to put on a musical party and one that all the Wembley crowd loved from start to finish.
