2020 should have been Collateral’s breakthrough year on the back of a well-received album from both fans and critics alike, and tour plans laid. That was before the pandemic laid waste to all of that. However, as Dee Snider famously said “you can’t stop rock ‘n’ roll”, so Collateral played a live outdoors show back in September, and for a Christmas treat frontman Angelo Tristan, along with the help of his of Collateral bandmates, has released this four song covers EP.
The choice of two of the four covers will come as no surprise, Aerosmith’s ‘Dream On’ (Angelo has landed the role of Aerosmith vocalist in an upcoming biopic of the band) and Bon Jovi’s ‘Living On A Prayer’, a band who are a big influence on Collateral’s sound. The latter has a tasty (electric!) guitar solo, whilst the former has a neat piano/vocal trade off.
The other two covers on the EP are Def Leppard’s ‘Hysteria’, which is okay, and ‘Hallelujah’ by Leonard Cohen, a song which has been covered numerous times already. However, it is the best cover on this EP as Angelo puts plenty of emotion into his singing. Full marks to whoever tinkled the ivories on here as they really add the icing (and indeed marzipan!) to the musical cake.
A perfect musical gift and pick me up from the Collateral boys. ****
