Derby based Beggars Bliss formed in 2024, with a mantra of – “if it’s not fun, it’s not worth doing.” Their line-up is Henry John (vocals, guitar), Milly Ayesha (keyboards, vocals), Dan Griffiths (bass, vocals) and Chris West (drums, vocals).
Lead single ‘Peaches n Cream’ is a top-notch song, with a Free meets Black Crowes groove and lyrics that would make even Mr Coverdale blush! ‘Train Song’, with its harmonica intro and nifty keys, is the other single released so far. No real surprise as again it gets the feet tapping and has a sing-a-long chorus.
Beggars Bliss do ballads well too, as ‘Dusk ‘Till Dawn’ proves. They don’t break new musical ground, however, they nail that classic blues meets rock sound of Free, the Black Crowes, 70’s Aerosmith and Blackberry Smoke, and for fellow Brit comparisons the likes of Bad Touch and the Karma Effect.
‘Sunshine’ does just that, adding a musical bit of warmth to the listener’s day and features another fine guitar solo.
Another highlight is ‘Rabbit Hole’, that sees the album off in a swirl of piano led southern rock, Skynyrd style. Henry John sounds like a dead ringer for Live’s Ed Kowalcyzk on this one.
Beggars Bliss enter a crowded field, yet they have two big advantages. Firstly, their songs which are catchy as heck but never outstay their welcome. Secondly, they have that undeniable groove factor which will sound great live. One of the best debut albums you’ll hear this year. ****
