Album review: OSIRIS – Within A Dream

Escape Music [Release date 14.08.26]

Osiris is an all-Bahraini prog rock band founded in 1980 by brothers Mohamed Alsadeqi (guitars, vocals) and Nabil Alsadeqi (drums, percussion). They have been active ever since, bar a hiatus between 1993 and 2000. Osiris have released seven albums previously on the French music label MUSEA and now their latest album gets a release on Escape Music. Maybe not a logical home, given the label’s more melodic rock & metal leanings, but a good one nonetheless.

Joining the brothers Alsadeqi in Osiris are Nader Sharif (keyboards, classical arrangements), Abdul Razzaq Arian (keyboards), Khalid Shamlan (piano, keyboards, vocals), Hadi Saeed (bass) and Ahmed Rawanbakhsh (vocals).

Not one of the five songs clocks in at less than nine minutes and there are plenty of keys, guitars and vocals arrangements for the listener to lose themselves in. ‘House of Pain’ features keys that are reminiscent of Arena’s Clive Nolan, complete with epic guitar parts that recall Camel’s Andy Latimer in full flight. The keyboards play an integral part of the band’s sound, recalling late 70′s, early 80′s Saga.

The music Osiris play will never be fashionable (unless we have a full on 70s prog rock revival!), yet it has that timeless quality and an album the listener will enjoy over time. For the guitar parts on ‘Freedom Within a Dream’ alone it is worth a listen to the album. Or ‘Every Mother Sheds A Tear’ for the band’s use of harmonies and a little bit of a bass solo!

Osiris have produced a good old fashioned prog rock album steeped in the classic sounds of Camel, Eloy and Yes. They have added their own musical twists and deserve to be more widely known based on this enjoyable album. ***1/2
