Mascot Records [Release date 02.10.26]

Ah, family. Some people get the stamp collection from their dad, some inherit nasal hair, and here we have young Dutch rockers Inherited who have, um, inherited a love of thrash – and also it would seem a lot of anger – from the fathers of guitarist Marvin Wesdorp and bassist Lucas Camonier, who played together in Polluted Inheritance (check out the highly rated ‘Into Darkness’ album for a prime example of Dutch thrash from the early 2000′s)

With three of Inheritance still being in their teens, there’s an understanding that they’re going to most probably rely on influences. On this five track ep, that is very clear and obvious. This is at the unreadable logo and gargling with gravel end of thrash, each vocal spat out, guitars on maximum overdrive, and anger, anger everywhere. There’s an almost charming naivety to it all, like a bunch of school mates who’ve got together and decided THIS is how we’re going to sound, right from the opening instrumental, aptly called ‘Intro’, through to the self titled ‘Inherited’ – a bit like ‘Iron Maiden’ by – well, you know. Actually, ‘Inherited’ (the song) the track may well be their rallying cry, a ‘this is us, take it or leave it, ‘cos I’m gonna be angry either way.’

That’s not to say this is a band that cannot develop, and I really hope they do. Occasionally there’s some intriguing stuff going on, such as a really interesting groove run out at the end of Won’t Break’ which moves away from what is pretty standard thrash fayre. The title track of this ep also points to some decent ideas, an almost Type O Negative groove going on, decent backing vocals and riffs but again, the vocals just sound a bit too forced, like they feel this is the way it should sound.

The band apparently played their sixth ever show at Wacken-Open-Air, after winning something called the Dutch Metal Battle, so seemingly they can do this live. It’ll be very interesting to see how they develop – I mean, y’know, when they get to be about 21 years old! – as there is definitely something there that can go beyond what they are currently doing. ***
