Loose [Released 29.09.14]
Justin Townes Earle has led an interesting life that’s for sure, from stints in rehab through to a revolving door with record labels. He is also the son of legendary country artist Steve Earle, although as the title track’s lyric states his dad left early on in his childhood.
This is a proper country album and far removed from the more pop end of Americana. Many songs feature the lovely pedal steel playing of Paul Niehaus, often melding in neatly with the acoustic guitar playing of Justin Townes Earle like on ‘Today And A Lonely Night’. A good country artist can also pen a decent rock ‘n’ roll tune and Earle pulls this off on the highly addictive ‘My Baby Drives’.
If in a certain mood a song like ‘Picture In A Draw’ would melt the iciest heart. The only song that strays out of the traditional country field is the final song on the album, ‘Burning Pictures’ that has a decent rocking riff driven along nicely by the bass playing of Mark Hedman.
A thought provoking and very personal album, that packs a lot in emotionally in just under forty minutes. ***1/2
