Album review: OZRIC TENTACLES – Harmonic Mind

Festival favourites Ozric Tentacles formed at the Stonehenge Free Festival in 1983 and have kept a solid fanbase ever since. They released a number of cassette only albums during the 80s, releasing their first full album on CD in 1989.

This new release is their 17^th full CD album. Fronted by multi instrumentalist and sole founder member Ed Wynne (a fan of Gong, Kraan, Hawkwind and Frank Zappa – which says a lot here), it is another wonderful slice of psychedelic rock.

Again an instrumental album (as they all are), the set opens with the 6 minute ‘Guardstones’, and there is immediately a space rock and jam feel. Lie back and enjoy the colours. An even mix of early 70s space Hawkwind and the late 80s more electronic trippy ambient. More trippy than Miranda Hart, more Hawkwind than Hawkwind.

‘Space Platform’ features some excellent guitar work and interesting rhythms. Take the 80s electronic edge of Eloy and may it a dozen times more noodle intricate.

Tracks sway in feel, swinging from the 70s to the 90s and back, and while each track has a theme, there isn’t necessarily the song structure of more mainstream music.

Closing track ‘Sumipad’ is in places the most gentle, a good album closer.

While some of the rhythms are programmed, the additional percussion adds an extra dimension, as does the flute when it’s used.

If any of that sounds your cup of tea it’s really well worth checking out. ****1/2
