Album review: BIRDEATSBABY – Tanta Furia

BIRDSEATBABY - Tanta Furia

[Release date 07.11.16]

Birdeatsbaby.  The band name alone, dreamt up by flame haired maniacal frontwoman Mishkin Fitzgerald, is designed to antagonise, to provoke reaction.  And that spills over into the band’s material – their modus operandi to poke sharp sticks in the eyes and ears of the unexpectant.

Impossible to ignore, the dark, orchestral, music hall, indie noir cacophony that the Brighton four piece – Mishkin Fitzgerald (vocals, piano and accordion), Garry Mitchell (bass guitars and backing vocals), Forbes Coleman (drums, programming, synths and backing vocals) and Hana Piranha (violin, cello and backings vocals) – serve up, both on record and in their theatrical appearances on stage and on video, comes from an unworldly space.

Formed in 2008, with the aim of marrying drama, theatrics and the classics with the UK alternative rock music scene, Tanta Furia is the Brighton based band’s fourth studio album.  Fitzgerald and Mitchell are the only line-up constants, but what seems on first listen seems like an unhinged frenzy of conflicting musical styles and ideas, on repeated listens begins to reveals moments of sheer beauty – strings, heavenly vocals, and order begins to slowly emerge from the chaos.

For many of us of a certain age, progressive rock has immoveable connotations.  But in the current disposable music scene, when everything’s been done before, it’s increasingly difficult to be ‘original’, Birdeatsbaby are exploring a new dimension of progressive music.  Uncomfortable at times, challenging at others and at times,, rivetingly beautiful, it’s to their credit that they sound like no one else.

Easy to disregard as deranged madness, there’s more to Birdeatsbaby than immediately meets the ear, and Tanta Furia is well worth exploring if you want to be taken on a journey of discovery outside of your comfort zone.  ***1/2
