Album review: MORK – Monolitt

MORK - Monolitt

Peaceville [Release date 19.06.26]

mork is an acclaimed Black Metal project formed by Norwegian multi instrumentalist Thomas Eriksen in 2004, this is their 8th album. The title translates as Monolith; inspired by the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, it explores conditions that loom over humanity, such as collapse, isolation and destruction. And while Eriksen handles guitars, writing and vocals, he is joined by drummer Asgeir Mickelson, and mixed by Børge Finstad, who has previously worked with Mayhem.

The album bubbles over with fire, anger, yet underneath (as opener Under Vekten Av Verden shows perfectly) there are intricate and overlapping guitar lines that nod to a progressive metal feel. Under the Weight Of The World indeed. Ødelagt (Destroyed) features similar “Angry Demon” vocals, but the drum roll bursts and aggressive tempo shifts add an extra dimension. Ferdamann features a top guitar line as aggressive as the vocals, underlain by cleaner progressive black metal themes. Haunting at times, oppressive at others. Other tracks blend noisescapes with furious riffage, the music is often both punchy and atmospheric. There are additional guest vocals from Øyvind Kaslegard; and much like the guitar work, the vocals are at times layered.

Whatever the atmosphere, haunting or thought provoking, there is no let up in the ferocity. The themes, layering and song structures are more ambitious than your typical black metal album.

And fans will love the LP edition, the marbled effect vinyl feels solid and reproduces a wonderful sound. This album is incredibly intense throughout, but there’s enough going on under the waves to keep you engaged. If you have any interest in extreme metal this album is well worth checking out. ****
