Album review: FEEDER – All Bright Electric

Cooking Vinyl [Release date 07.10.16]

Feeder are back after a four year break and signed to a new label, Cooking Vinyl, who certainly have an impressive roster with the likes of the Cult, Embrace, HIM and Gary Numan amongst others.

Feeder never produce album after album sounding the same, instead as main man Grant Nicholas says, they like to keep moving forward musically. This album continues that fine tradition with opener ‘Universe Of Life’ fair blasting listener through their chair. Big chords, big chorus and liking the higher note call and response vocals on the chorus. Recent single ‘Eskimo’ is an instant hit and the sort of song the band does so well.

The mellower refrains of ‘Infrared Ultraviolet’ allows the band to expand their sound a little and vocalist Grant Nicholas has lost none of his vocal power, or indeed smoother side as can be heard on ‘Oh Mary’. Take Hirose’s bass playing is an integral part of the band’s sound and the range of some funky beats to out and out rock make for a rich, strong sound on the songs.

The anthemic ‘Another Day On Earth’ ends the album in style, the rise and fall of the tempo of the song works really well. From the stark piano beat through the chorus, this is why Feeder continue to remain top of their game.

Feeder don’t do average or bad albums, and this one is up their with their best works. Maybe not as instant as their earlier albums, but keep playing and you will soon reveal the album’s full delights. ****
