The Best of 2016

May 2016

Dan Reed Network

DAN REED NETWORK Fight Another Day (Frontiers)
Fans will love the mix of old and new influences…a complete triumph, totally relevant, and underlining a wonderful comeback that can only go from strength to strength. (David Randall)
Paul Gilbert
PAUL GILBERT I Can Destroy (earMUSIC)
… reveals new nuances with repeated plays. Paul Gilbert’s musical knowledge, breathless guitar playing and imaginative arrangements shape the musical vision of a shredder with a penchant for real songs.    (Pete Feenstra)

The Senton Bombs

THE SENTON BOMBS Mass Vendetta (7Hard Records)
… intense rock ‘n’ roll riffs, tight ass rhythm and the vocals of Joey Class who sounds like is a US singer, yet the band hail from Blackpool. Well it is famous for its rock…  (Jason Ritchie)
Diamond Head
DIAMOND HEAD Diamond Head  (Dissonance)
This latest album will certainly energise their live setlist and is the band’s best effort since their heyday. Forever known as the “nearly men” of NWOBHM, they’ve come up with a selection of songs that hark back to their formative albums but also sound contemporary.   (David Randall)

Nemesea

NEMESEA Uprise (Napalm Records)
Musically, there is a nice blend of riffage and electronica… Here’s hoping that ‘Uprise’ will be just that, a new flowering for a really excellent sounding band.   (David Randall)

The Best of 2016

June 2016

Scorpion Child

SCORPION CHILD Acid Roulette (Nuclear Blast)
Bands that pay homage to the 70′s rock sound need not be copyists as Scorpion Child prove on this album. A groove and riff laden ride that will have you pressing repeat play/landing the needle back on the start of the album. (Jason Ritchie)
Sunstorm
SUNSTORM Edge Of Tomorrow (Frontiers)
…JLT seems to be enjoying a reversion to a heavier style…the album is recommended for lovers of classic European hard rock.   (Andy Nathan)

Ray Wilson

RAY WILSON Song For A Friend (Jaggy D Records)
The execution is flawless but what stands out here is the collection of lovely tunes. As many artists strive to write that one great song in their lifetime, Wilson has produced a masterful compendium of nine beauties – soothing, melodious and brilliant.  (Mark Shaw)
Big Big Train
BIG BIG TRAIN Folklore  (indie)
Not as instant as the previous two ‘English Electric’ albums, ‘Folklore’ reveals itself more slowly and as with every album by this band stands up to repeated plays. A band and album that has a wide appeal beyond the confines of progressive music and folk.   (Jason Ritchie)

The Best of 2016

July/August 2016

Heart

HEART Beautiful Broken(UMC)
Aiming for a seventies feel, they picked songs they’ve wanted to re-do for many years…it brings a welcome splash of colour to what was a rather monochrome period in the band’s career. (Pete Whalley)
Katatonia
KATATONIA The Fall Of Hearts (Peaceville)
Despite its intensity, ‘The Fall Of Hearts’ is an engaging experience, the whole album being shot through with breathtaking moments of musical and lyrical brilliance…A top, top effort, the best album of the year so far…  (Alan Jones)

Roadhouse

ROADHOUSE City Of Decay (Krossborder)
…places the emphasis firmly on the weight of their songs, while this superbly produced album captures both the band’s natural spark and their musical excellence… ’City Of Decay’ brings a new found maturity to an already weighty musical canon. (Pete Feenstra)
Laurence Jones
LAURENCE JONES Take Me High  (Ruf)
It’s an adventurous album, full of musical diversity and the band’s road tested abilities and just like the very best concerts it leaves you wanting more.  (Pete Feenstra)
