The Best of 2016

Albums of the Month (2016)

September 2016

Kissin' Dynamite

KISSIN’ DYNAMITE Generation Goodbye (AFM Records)
…well played, well produced with well written, extremely catchy (but a little quirky) tunes…These guys don’t seem to know how to write a bad song! Kissin’ Dynamite deserve to be huge but in this day and age, who knows?  (Phil Berisford)
Sari Schorr
SARI SCHORR A Force Of Nature (Manhaton)
…a slice of polished blues-rock with just enough lightning in the bottle to crossover from blues to rock fans…This is an excellent album that will surely kick start a blossoming career.  (Pete Feenstra)

Evergrey

EVERGREY The Storm Within (AFM Records)
Evergrey are truly back on top of their game with one of their finest albums to date, I can’t recommend this one highly enough. (Jason Ritchie)
Sinnergod
SINNERGOD Sinnergod (indie)
To be honest it’s really refreshing hearing a young band who are prepared to break out of the now predictable Led Zeppelin template…This is one of the finest, most consistent, independent releases I’ve heard this year and deserves to be huge.  (David Randall)

The Best of 2016

October 2016

Beth hart

BETH HART Fire On The Floor (Provogue)
…a career defining album full of rich songcraft, heartfelt phrasing and exuberant playing shot through with total conviction and emotion  (Pete Feenstra)
Richard Shindell
RICHARD SHINDELL Careless (Continental)
…Shindell deserves to be better known than he is and ‘Careless’ might well do the trick…Touching, intelligent and staggeringly good. As usual.  (Alan Jones)

Tilt

TILT Hinterland (Tilt Music)
Melodic, interesting and – when required – complex progressive music make Tilt’s debut album one you really need to hear and own.   (Jason Ritchie)
Status Quo
STATUS QUO Aquostic II (Universal)
… musically the band are still in rude health and those searching out their Quo fix will not be disappointed with this album  (Dave Wilson)

November 2016

Rock Wolves

ROCK WOLVES (SPV)
…this is a supremely well  crafted and produced album that offers up some memorable tunes…an almost perfect debut that one hopes will be continued rather than merely mark down time from the band members’ respective projects.    (David Randall)
Glenn Hughes
GLENN HUGHES Resonate (Frontiers)
…It’s an album sculpted by layered parts and shaped by a huge wall of sound that accommodates every element of Glenn’s bristling persona. He’s an indefatigable performer who rocks, grooves and gets just as soulful in the studio as he does while treading the boards.  (Pete Feenstra)

Red Butler

RED BUTLER Nothing To Lose (indie)
…lights a fuse which smoulders, sparkles and finally glistens, as it fully reveals itself as an album with purposeful songs built round intricate little pauses, rich layers of sounds, catchy hooks and big guitar breaks..   (Pete Feenstra)
Blackberry Smoke
BLACKBERRY SMOKE Like An Arrow (Earache)
… Blackberry Smoke have produced another fine set of tunes and each one holds its own delights…and many will doubtless become firm favourites in their live shows  (Jason Ritchie)
