Eagle Vision [Release date 29.09.17] CD/DVD
There is no doubt that 1971’s “Sticky Fingers” is my favourite album by The Rolling Stones, but for years it has also stayed as possibly my favourite album of all time. Within its ten tracks you have the timeless “Brown Sugar”, “Bitch”, the slower “Wild Horses” and “Sway”, the country sounds of “Dead Flowers” and the epic “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking”. It is a start to finish classic.
So, let’s fast forward to 2015 and the band are on their Zip Code tour of the US when it is announced that, to commemorate the forthcoming re-issue campaign, they would be playing the album in its entirety at LA’s Fonda Theatre.
I was excited to say the least. Yes, you could argue that the band are no longer the line-up that produced a handful of stunning albums around this time, but Ronnie Wood had been in The Stones for forty years at this point and is more than capable of tearing through the songs like he played on the original album.
The latest instalment of The Rolling Stones “From The Vault” series contains that gig on CD as well as DVD/Blu-ray. The album is not played in its original running order but that matters not, there are also three additional songs on the CD in the form of “Jumpin’ Hack Flash”, “Rock Me Baby” and “Start Me Up”. The DVD also adds to this with “All Down The Line”, “When The Whip Comes Down” and “I Can’t Turn You Loose”.
The gig is as tight as you would expect from The Stones and sounds great. With the band still touring and recording, and looking like they will continue to do so for a while yet, this gig stands out as a highpoint (for me) of their recent output- and hopefully they might repeat this at some point as I would love to see this show live. *****
