Album review: THE STRUTS – Strange Days

THE STRUTS – Strange Days

Polydor [Release date 16.10.20]

They may hail from Derby, but the Struts have that glam meets classic rock appeal that goes particularly well in the US. Neat idea behind this album to record it in ten days whilst in lockdown. Vocalist Luke Spiller, guitarist Adam Slack, bassist Jed Elliot, and drummer Gethin Davies are joined by a series of guests including Robbie Williams, Tom Morello, (Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave) Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott and Phil Collen.

It is the Robbie Williams duet and title track that has been gaining the Struts plenty of attention outside of their usual rock fan base. Heck, the song even gets played on my local BBC radio station! They complement each other well and an unexpected treat.

A big Stones strut on ‘Cool’, another possible single, whilst their cover of the Kiss classic ‘Do You Love Me’ will appeal to the classic rockers out there. ‘Can’t Sleep’ sees them back with a glam rock stomper – something they do so well.

Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott and Phil Collen pop up on ‘I Hate How Much I Love You’, complete with a trademark cheeky laugh sign off by Mr Elliott. Great fun and just what we need in these challenging times.

The Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. helps out on the indie rocker ‘Another Hit Of Showmanship’. Reminded me a little of Foxy Shazam. Now there’s a possible future team-up which could prove very fruitful. For something totally different try the easy on the ears ‘Am I Talking To The Champagne (Or Talking To You)’. You can see where the Queen comparisons come from, not only from the flamboyance of Luke Spiller, but also the Struts willingness to go down any musical route they fancy.

Strange days indeed, yet we have this album to lift the spirits and one to play loud me dears. Great work fellas. ****

Album review: MARK BOALS & RING OF FIRE – All The Best!

MARK BOALS & RING OF FIRE – All The Best!

Frontiers [Release date 09.10.20]

Yngwie Malmsteen has introduced many fine vocalists to rock and metal fans including Jeff Scott Soto and Mark Boals, who sang on the classic ‘Trilogy’ album. Since then he has worked with many bands and artists including Iron Mask, Royal Hunt and Vindictiv.

Mark Boals utilised many top musicians including Vinnie Appice, Tony Macalpine, drum wizard Virgil Donati and keyboards player Vitalij Kuprij. Most recently, Mark released a melodic metal album with Vision Divine and Labyrinth guitarist Olaf Thorsen under the name Shining Black on Frontiers in the summer.

Disc one covers his solo albums, including his debut solo release which was a Japanese only issue and included guitarist Doug Aldrich. Pick of disc one are ‘Jane’, ‘Lady Babylon’ and ‘Up To You’. The latter uses harmony vocals to great effect.

Ring Of Fire feature on disc two. ‘My Déjà Vu’ is as good a piece of symphonic/neoclassical metal you’ll hear. Plenty of guitar, keys and the soaring vocals of Mark Boals. ‘Mother Russia’ allows the band to stretch out musically. Indeed the album it comes from, 2014’s concept based ‘Battle Of Leningrad’, is well worth investigating further if you haven’t already.

If you are a fan of Ring Of Fire add another star to the rating as try as I might I can’t seem to enjoy them as much as Royal Hunt and Artension. ***

Album review: AMERICAN TEARS – Free Angel Express

AMERICAN TEARS – Free Angel Express

Deko Entertainment [Release date 23.10.20]

Since Mark Mangold brought back American Tears in 2018 they are now onto this, their third album – the sixth in the band’s history. This latest, ‘Free Angel Express’ features Alex Landenburg (Stratovarius, Kamelot, Rhapsody) on drums, with guest appearances by Barry Sparks (UFO, Dokken), Doug Howard (Touch, Utopia, Edgar Winter Band) and Charlie Calv (Angel, Shotgun Symphony).

The lead tracks of the album ‘Sledgehammered’ and ‘Woke’ are both unsurprisingly the most instant songs. ‘Sledgehammered’ in particular roars out of the speakers with plenty of keyboards.

‘Can’t Get Satisfied’ is an enjoyable melodic rocker and like the whole album, has a 70s feel due to the authentic instruments from that time used to record the music.

For a Vangelis meets ELP wig out look no further than the epic ‘Free Angel Express/Resist/Outta Here’. Mark Mangold throws everything into this one it seems keys/synths/organ wise, yet it still keeps on a strong melodic path.

‘Blue Rondo’ may be familiar to many music fans – a jazz standard composed by Dave Brubeck. Here Mark Mangold spars his organ playing off the drums of Alex Landenburg. Listen out for the smooth jazz break midway through, classy.

American Tears is a different musical beast to the other bands he is associated with, namely Touch (who have a new album in the works), the Sign and Drive, She Said. All the better for it as he really gets to show off his undoubted keyboard skills. Pomp up the volume! ***1/2

Album review: GEEZER BUTLER – Reissues

WIN! Competition (closes 30 October 2020)

Geezer Butler reissues (October 2020)

BMG [Release date 30.10.20]

Bassist Terry “Geezer” Butler is best known as a founder of Black Sabbath, and not only provided the band’s groove but much of the lyrics.

While Black Sabbath endeavoured to keep rocking into the 90s, with Geezer slipping in and out of band (and sometimes appearing in Ozzy’s band too), he recorded these solo albums in 1995, 1997 and 2005 respectively. While they were technically as a band, GZR or G/Z/R, pronounced Gee Zed R, or just Geezer, they are oft considered solo albums.

Long out of print, these 3 reissues are welcome and come in nice digipaks.

1995’s Plastic Planet is a very heavy effort, and features Fear Factory vocalist Burton C Bell. There is a very definite 90s groove, without quite being nu or alternative metal, although much of the vocals are on the shouty side. What is unmistakeable is Butler’s heavy bass lines, and there are times on the album they stand out, showcasing how important they were in the original Sabbath sound.

Recorded at a time when the Butler/Sabbath relationship was more hate than love, Giving Up The Ghost is lyrically directed at Tony Iommi. A good album that tried to embrace the zeitgeist. Sadly the live tracks from the promo EP (added to Japanese pressings of the original album) are not included.

1997’s Black Science featured vocalist Clark Brown, and with a few technical sounds thrown in and bursts of shouty vocals it continued to embrace the 90s and the heavier end. Opener Man In A Suitcase is almost infectiously catchy, crunchy too. There’s a good late 70s Sabbath groove to Box Of Six, with some very strained and loud vocals, bringing the sound up to date. And the excellent Among The Cybermen one of several tracks referencing growing up with 1960s TV. Definitely at the better end of 90s metal.

Skip to 2005 and Ohwork, which sees the band joined by drummer Chad Smith alongside guitarist Pedro Howse and vocalist Clark Brown. Although there’s a definite Nu Metal hint to the album, opener Misfit has a beefed up punk edge. And amongst the obvious alternative metal of Pardon My Depression there’s a clear blues base. I Believe nods to more classic metal, and there’s moments of rap metal on the album too.

These three albums are different and defintely off the beaten track for the average Sabbath fan. Geezer’s take the opportunity to be more modern and experimental, utilising a different style of guitarist (excellent, just not Sabbath). Sabbath for the Nu Nineties and very enjoyable too, although the constant aggression does make them a little samey at times. The digipaks are a nice package, but the lack of any extra tracks is quite the missed opportunity. ****

Album review: GREG LAKE – The Anthology

GREG LAKE - The Anthology

BMG [Release date 23.10.20]

Famously, the late Greg Lake was an integral part of King Crimson and more substantially, of Emerson Lake and Palmer. Both bands have had such a deep impact on progrock and indeed rock music generally, that it’s impossible not to have heard something that bears their fingerprints.

This anthology takes us on a thrill packed time-shift through four decades, charting Lake’s path as an innovative artist, through his tenure with those bands and on into his less publicised but equally impressive solo work. It winnows down a lifetime of recording to 33 key tracks, neatly fitting onto a 2 CD hardback or a 2 LP Gatefold option. Effectively, these are their own career shorthand for Lake’s massive artistic contribution to popular music.

CD/LP 1 is opened by ‘Peace – A Beginning’, and CD/LP2 is closed by ‘Peace – An End’. Suitably apposite bookends. King Crimson’s albums created a fantasy world into which their listeners could escape. And at the heart of the songs were Lake’s powerful, otherworldly, almost spiritual, but never portentous vocals. They were the key ingredient. It wouldn’t have worked without him.

Apart from those bookends, only ’21st Century Schizoid Man’, ‘I Talk To The Wind’ and the title track from ‘The Court of The Crimson King’ emerge from Lake’s 2 album membership of the band. And all are taken from a variety of live performances. ‘…Schizoid…’ with Gary Moore on guitar, from Lake’s “London 81” album, is probably the pick. The guy was at his thrilling, note bending best (1981). It was the perfect sideman performance to Lake’s driving, right on the money vocals. That said, other two songs come in pretty cool versions, otherwise they wouldn’t be here.

CD/LP1 pivots around 4 ELP tracks. ‘Take A Pebble’ and ‘Lucky Man’ are Lake’s story telling and lyrical imagery at their finest. Passionate and pure – a reflection of the man within – opening up the songs to numerous live interpretations. ‘The Only Way’ and ‘Oh My Father’ are much more personal, merging two separate emotions into one piece of music, ringing with echoes of memories and regrets.

Few rock songs have been inspired by French chanteuse, Edith Piaf, of ‘Non, Je Regrette Rien’ fame, but that was the genesis of ELP’s monster hit, ‘C’est La Vie’, written by Lake the Francophile, taken here from “Works, Volume 1”. The track opens CD/LP2.

What becomes apparent as the music unfolds across this collection, is that while Lake was happy participating in Emerson’s musical flights of fancy, he was equally capable of bringing the band’s music back down to earth. And while Emerson was focused on the violent (if entertaining) reduction of the classics (eg on Works 1 & 2), Lake was writing the anguished, regretful ‘For You’ (Love Beach).

Greg Lake - High Voltage 2010

That course continued into Lake’s solo albums where his skill and talent as a songwriter truly blossomed. Again, 4 tracks form the emotional core of this CD/LP.

‘Black And Blue’ and ‘It Hurts’ are taken from his debut solo album “Greg Lake” (1981), recorded with Gary Moore, plus a trio of Toto’s finest, Steve Lukather, David Hungate and Steve Porcaro. The other pair – two of his finest compositions, the anxiously nostalgic ‘Haunted’ and the achingly beautiful ‘Slave To Love’ come from 1983′s “Manoevres”. Lake had mastered the art of making the sophisticated and the elaborate seem so simple. Sometimes even very small pieces of music work so well.

Talking of which, as you would expect, arguably Lake’s finest hour as a writer of popular music, the song ‘I Believe In Father Christmas’ is featured on CD/LP1 in its original single version. And while much of Lake’s progressive rock and romantic interludes will live on in our memory, it is this song that will make him immortal.

The liner notes celebrate the man’s life, featuring numerous pics, memorials and memories, sometimes touching, sometimes humorous, from many, including Chris Welch, Ian Anderson, Colin Hurt (doorman at the Clift Hotel …what a tribute), Bob Kinkel (TSO), Mark Mancina (Producer) and more.

Few compilations are ever entirely satisfying. But if any fan, or indeed, any artist wanted an example of how best to define a career in words and music, they need look no further than “Greg Lake, A Musical Journey”. *****

Film review: PHIL LYNOTT – Songs For While I’m Away

PHIL LYNOTT- SONGS FOR WHILE I’M AWAY

Break Out/ Eagle Rock Productions [Release Date 30.10.20]

Autumn 2020 is one of those times when the Thin Lizzy legacy is getting one of its periodic dusting downs.  Alongside a bumper budget compilation and a 6 CD box set of rarities comes this specially commissioned feature-length film of Philip Lynott’s life, directed by Emer Reynolds.

At an hour and 50 minutes it can be seen as the definitive account, with a star studded list of contributors including former wife Caroline, his two daughters Sarah and Cathleen, his former long-time girlfriend, and family members, as well as musicians including pearls of wisdom from a very un-Irish sounding Adam Clayton of U2. This puts it in a different league to the BBC4 documentary a few years ago that trod similar ground.

The major input from bandmates come from Eric Bell and subsequently Scott Gorham who delivers his reminiscences in wryly humorous fashion with a wild glint in his eye. Midge Ure and Darren Wharton also appear, but the one glaring hole is the non-participation of the man with whom he shared the longest musical history in Brian Downey. The man himself occasionally adds to the story  through archive audio recordings.

Much of the story of his rise and fall – from a black youngster raised in Dublin by relatives, to iconic rock star, to his tragic drug and alcohol -fuelled downfall – has already been told. However, the first hand testimony of the guests mean it is told in richer detail, and judging by the closing credits their participation has also paid dividends in terms of supplying rare or private footage.

It brings out some of the contradictions in the man- the shy poet who gained in confidence to ooze stage presence and charisma; the artist who moved to London in search of fame but remained such a proud Dubliner that he insisted his children were born there; the lover of all things American who failed to crack the States; and his ambivalent relationship with first hit ‘Whiskey in the Jar’.

The one health warning is that the text that links the footage is so small that reading it on a TV set is like undergoing an optician’s test, which hopefully will be less of an issue in cinemas.

The soundtrack tends to be of short excerpts of Lizzy (and a few solo) songs, which are a nice balance of hits and rarities, chosen to better illuminate the story. However this is much broader than a solely musical film. Lizzy purists may scoff that elements of the band’s story are given relatively short shrift – the role of the harmony lead guitars in their sound, the Snowy White and John Sykes years – while oddly the reunion with Gary Moore and success of ‘Out In The Fields’ near the end of his life is not mentioned at all, perhaps because it did not fit the narrative of inexorable decline?

Instead this is a portrait of the family man as much as his musical legacy, and what really adds to the sum of knowledge are interviews with his wife and daughters-  both of whom had songs written for them – and their fleeting memories of him. His demise is not glossed over, though to hear old friends recall their last meeting with him, and the footage of his young family at his funeral is almost unbearably poignant.

It signs off on a sad note, yet the film is the definitive legacy yet for a rock legend and a nice complement to what is still one of the best catalogues in rock.  *****

Rising Stars: THE BEAUTY OF GEMINA

Swiss band The Beauty Of Gemina have just released their second UK singleA Night Like This’ , taken from their forthcoming album ‘Skeleton Dreams’. Frontman Michael Sele tells us more about the band and their music…

Can you describe the band’s sound? Would you agree there are some really strong melodic ‘goth’ influences in there…?

Once after a concert, a good friend of mine gave me the perfect description and I feel free to quote – a mix of warm, hypnotic blues, ambient melancholia, and earthy, indie-influenced folk. So, let’s add a drop of darkness in the elixir, that’s the secret of my Geminaland!

Which artists, past and present, have influenced your music?

I’ve listened so many music and still do, its difficult to name one. There are always quite different artist and bands on my list. I listen to classic music, Jazz, Metal, from Dylan to Björk, from David Bowie to Marylin Manson, from AC/DC to Fink, Oldfield, Pink Floyd, The Cure, U2, etc., etc, etc. I believe it is just this passion for music, which has driven me and inspired me.

The Beauty of Gemina are very well established in the rest of Europe – are you excited to be releasing music in the UK?

In any event. I bought a lot of albums of British musicians. I spent many holidays in beautiful England. I even watched the weddings of the royal family, its about time to get something back

DVD review: DEF LEPPARD – Hits Vegas

DEF LEPPARD - Hits Vegas

Eagle Rock Entertainment

Initially only available as part of the highly popular “London to Vegas” live box set, Def Leppard are now releasing stand-alone versions of their “Hits Vegas, Live at Planet Hollywood” set, these being available in DVD/2CD, Blu-ray/2CD, plus a limited edition transparent blue vinyl LP formats.

Now, it could be argued that Def Leppard have released their fair share of live albums and DVD’s over the last few years, and that is a good point. However, as I stated in my original review of the afore mentioned box set, if you think this is a mere exercise in nostalgia, then think again.

With a massive 28 song setlist, this live show was recorded during the bands residency Planet Hollywood’s Zappos Theatre following their recent induction into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. The setlist here has more of a deep cut feel to it as alongside the usual, and very much expected hits, we are treated to the likes of “Billy’s Got A Gun”, “Die Hard The Hunter”, “Too Late For Love” and “Mirror, Mirror (Look In To My Eyes)”, this gives the show a great balance and one that covers all eras of Def Leppard’s lengthy career.

Tracks like “Now”, “Promises”, “Paper Sun”, “Slang” and “Let’s Go” are all good examples of the band’s post “Adrenalize” output and all sound great here. There is also a mid-set acoustic segment in the show, featuring “Let Me Be The One”, “We Belong”, “Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad” and “Two Steps Behind”.

I may be a massive fan of the band but just have a listen to “Hits Vegas” and you will surely agree that Def Leppard still sound great, still pull in big audiences and are showing no signs of slowing down. *****

Feature: Albums that time forgot…EUROPE – Secret Society

EUROPE - Secret Society

Sanctuary (2006)

Back in 2007 my fellow GRTR! reviewer and pal Pete Whalley, and my aspiring guitar hero son Ben, made our way through a February snowstorm to Liverpool Academy.  It was a fairly low key gig for the Swedish melodic rockers Europe, but it marked the beginning of their rise and rise over the next few years.

I wrote:  “This was one of the finest gigs I’ve witnessed in recent years, maybe in a decade or two. The sheer energy levels, quality of musicianship and songs, was incredible.”

“The Liverpool stage may have been a tad smaller than they deserve, and with a scaled-down stage set, but Joey and co. were seemingly on a mission.”

This was the key aspect: the band had something to prove which contrasts sharply with their later incarnation.  More of that later.

‘Secret Society came out in 2006 and moved the story on from the impressive comeback album ‘Start From The Dark’.  As Jason Ritchie noted in his review, SFTD had polarised some of the band’s 80s fans as it was a lot heavier.  They swopped swirling synths for a more fullsome downtuned guitar sound in the very capable hands of John Norum.

The guitarist had jumped ship in 1992 not long after recording Don Dokken’s solo album, he later rejoined the newly reconstituted Dokken as well as producing several solo albums during the intervening period.

Jason continued “Hard edged melodic rock and streets ahead of contemporary bands like Audioslave and Alter Bridge…”

Joey Tempest could always write a good song and there are plenty here including the hard rocking title track, ‘The Getaway Plan’, the rumbling bass-driven ‘Human After All’,  and frenetic ‘Love Is Not The Enemy’. There is no filler and the album never sags, reaching its crescendo with the quite wonderful ‘Devil Sings The Blues’.

The band were always good for an impressive ballad and ‘A Mother’s Son’ ticks that box whilst other standouts include ‘Always The Pretenders’, ‘Wish I Could Believe’, and ‘Forever Travelling’ (Jason’s least favourite!). Throughout, Norum’s frequently wah-tinged guitar is a real highlight.

Tempest thought this album moved the band forward further, more melodic than Start From The Dark.

This comeback period was consolidated with 2009′s ‘Last Look At Eden’ which might also be termed transitional.  The band freely returned to some of their seventies heroes for inspiration; bands such as Thin Lizzy, UFO and Deep Purple.

Europe will always say that ‘Start From The Dark’ and ‘Secret Society’ were essential to re-establish the band and update the sound, and their real aim was to return to their classic rock roots.

However as time went on with successive albums – and interestingly in the hands of contemporary American producers notably Kevin Shirley (Bag Of Bones) and Dave Cobb (War Of Kings, Walk The Earth) – the band became less distinctive and the material sounded more leaden. Norum was less creative.  The keyboards still subdued.  And all in the space of a decade.

Their stage shows also became more rigid.  We saw them triumphant at Bloodstock in August 2009 but by 2010 they were treading water, whilst on a three way bill with FM and the mighty Foreigner  in 2014, the latter – perhaps shockingly – completely overshadowed them.

The pints-high, classic rock crowd loved Europe, but we loved them more back in 2007 and ‘Secret Society’.

Album review: MARILYN MANSON – We Are Chaos

MARILYN MANSON - We Are Chaos

Loma Vista Recordings [Release date 11.09.20]

Marilyn Manson certainly doesn’t disappoint with album number eleven “We Are Chaos”, in fact, I would go so far as to say that this is currently my favourite Manson record to date.

Produced by Manson alongside Shooter Jennings, they have created an album that blends industrial rock with an 80’s electronic rock feel (something that Manson is so good at injecting into his music), lyrically rich and with plenty of sonic push and pull. There is also a great feel of Bowie in there, I’m thinking along the lines of “Cat People” here and interestingly this is a song that Manson has previously collaborated on with Jennings on the latter’s “Countach” album.

Opening track “Red, Black and Blue” contains all the above influences and is a massive opener, this is followed by the album’s title track which, in contrast, has an almost bright acoustic intro and has the feel of a big soundtrack, along with a great chorus. This moves nicely into “Don’t Chase The Dead”, a more 80’s orientated song that weirdly has an almost U2 feel to it at times. “Paint You With My Love” is a slower, sparse yet effective song, with “Half-Way & One Step Forward” opening with piano and again slower before building up into what I would consider a fitting ending to what feels like the first side of the album.

“Infinite Darkness” is on familiar Manson ground with a darker and industrial sound and this continues on “Perfume”, which has a kind of industrial blues vibe to it. “Keep My Head Together” has some great 80’s touches to it that are reminiscent of Depeche Mode, and also features some of my favourite guitar work on “We Are Chaos”. Then comes “Solve Coagula”, another slower and sparser track, another song that is perfect for a soundtrack somewhere, this song is again bluesy and is beautifully textured – a highlight, not only of this album, but of Manson’s entire musical back catalogue.

The album is closed by the excellent “Broken Needle”, the perfect track to do this as it really does feel like it could be the last song on earth – you’re going to have to take my word for this until you hear it for yourself.

You can probably tell that I quite like “We Are Chaos”, it has been the perfect antidote to the actual chaos that we are all currently facing. *****

Album review: FISH – Weltschmerz

FISH – Weltschmerz

Fish Music [Release date: 25.09.20]

Put simply, if this is to be Fish’s final studio production, he leaves us with a masterpiece.

The release has been much delayed. After the project was announced back in 2015, Fish has suffered the loss of his Father, together with some mental health pressures and a series of physical ailments and operations. He’s also taken on the control of all aspects of his music business. From the studio in his back garden (featured in a recent episode of Gardeners World!) to creating his own management structure, record label and distribution processes.

There was never any doubt that the project would be completed though. For those who follow his articulate and detailed social media posts, Fish has regularly conveyed a sense that delivering ‘Weltschmerz’ was both his inspiration and nemesis.  Driven by perfection, he wanted this last world-weary opus to be worth the struggle. It is.

In old money, this is what you would call a classic double studio album. It is filled with tracks that build, ebb, flow, change direction and give room to breathe.

‘Grace of God’ sets the scene. It is an intricate piece of many moving parts. The opening passages are delicate with strings floating over a complex rhythm providing the cues for Fish to paint pictures of hospital patients slipping away amongst consultants, computers and care committees. Written long before Covid-19 broke, but this could be the soundtrack to the pandemic.  The song swells with despair, rising on an arrangement that introduces brass and searching backing vocals. Quite the entrance, Mr Dick.

That melancholic sense of the German weltschmerz concept can be detected in the way the album has been put together. ‘Man With A Stick’ sees Fish dealing in graphic terms with the state-endorsed brutality and violence that instils fear in communities in every corner of the planet. And yet there is no rage in the big man’s manner, unlike the days of jerking outrage circa ‘Fugazi’. This is Fish describing terrible injustice in expressive but measured and careworn tones. Only the fuzzy guitar riffs hint at an angry undertow.

And that gorgeous synth/string combo again on ‘Walking On Eggshells’, a song about a tortured relationship that should end but won’t.

Throughout the opus, Fish’s voice is melodic and characterful, sounding smoother than it has done for a long time. Part of the credit should go to the production team of Calum Malcolm and Steve Vantsis who find a deft touch for the vocals, matched by balance, depth and sensitivity everywhere else. Malcolm has worked with Fish previously, but for this album a more appropriate reference point might be his production, back in the day, of The Blue Nile. Multi-instrumentalist Vantsis is also a long-time Fish collaborator and has also written the music alongside another regular Fish ally, guitarist Robin Boult.

There are two, perhaps three, outright showstoppers here. ‘Rose of Damascus’ is one. The 15 minute-plus track is ambitious in its lyrical scope, switching focus repeatedly from the individual to the remote, as we follow a teenage girl on an innocent Friday night (almost echoing the feeling of ‘Warm Wet Circles’ from ‘Clutching at Straws’, but transported from Scotland to the Middle East) through the horror of death from the skies to the shores of the Med and a possible passage to safety. The words are frequently stage-whispered a la ‘Blind Curve’, circa 1985, but the music is sleek and restrained. No overwrought prog workouts here.

Secondly, ‘Waverley Steps (End of the Line)’ brings together all the nuanced skills of Fish’s sustained career: a powerful, moving, poetic narrative; a shifting, brassy soundscape that breathes life into the words; and a sense of drama that coils around both. The track also features the best guitar work on show here.

Elsewhere, ‘This Party’s Over’, all Celtic grooves and rhythms, could easily be a strapline for the album. ‘Garden of Remembrance’ offers tender, delicate moments. ‘Little Man What Now’ is inspired by his Father’s passing and features a thrilling guitar/sax/keys interchange to wrap up the song.

The third showstopping contender is the title track and fittingly, the album closer, ‘Weltschmerz’. Over a sharp guitar line, Fish begins with a lyrical phrasing that could be The Stones’ ‘Sympathy For the Devil’ in a different Universe. The keyboards are to the fore here and there’s a touch more fury in the vocal delivery. Doris Brendel, adding colour and flavour on backing vocals throughout the album, gives this track a hint of ‘Great Gig In the Sky’ oomph.

The words on this track in particular are obviously autobiographical, but there’s no suggestion of resting on laurels. The ‘grey bearded warrior, a poet of no mean acclaim’ tells us ‘I’ve formed the opinion that things can’t stay as they are/My anger and my fury trapped like a wasp in a jar/It’s never too late to make a brave new start/When the revolution is called I will play my part.’

There are plans to tour this album next year, but with so much uncertainly currently swirling around live music, it’s an even-money shot that Fish will get his revolution first. By then, this reviewer might just have peeled back a few more onion-layers of lyrical and musical density. For now, it’s clear that this is a rich, accessible, profound album invested with heaps of integrity, passion and insight. ‘Weltschmerz’ stands as the best album of Fish’s solo career, and easily amongst the best of the year by anyone. *****

Album review: JENNY STURGEON – The Living Mountain

JENNY STURGEON – The Living Mountain

Hudson Records [Release date 16.10.20]

For Scottish singer-songwriter Jenny Sturgeon the environment, ecology and the elements are an essential part of ‘The Living Mountain’, her second solo album. She has been nominated for Composer of the Year at the 2018 Scots Trad Music Awards, Jenny Sturgeon also performs with Salt House and in the bird and migration-inspired Northern Flyway – an audio visual project co-written with Inge Thomson.

Three years in the making, ‘The Living Mountain’ was inspired by nature writer Nan Shepherd’s book of the same name and Jenny’s experience growing up near, and walking in, the Cairngorms.

Joining Jenny Sturgeon who plays piano, harmonium, dulcimer, whistle and guitar are Mairi Campbell (viola, vocals), Su-a Lee (cello), Grant Anderson (bass, vocals) with additional field recordings from Jez Riley-French and Magnus Robb.

Within the album’s songs Jenny explores her personal connection to this highland area as well as delving into Nan’s philosophy of simply ‘being’ in the mountains and interacting with the wild. Jenny’s vocals take centre stage, backed by gentle and subtle musical arrangements, with added birdsong and natural sounds from the Cairngorms. ‘The Senses’, with its simple piano backing and ‘Birds, Animals, Insects’ with the added birdsong/natural sounds, are two examples of the uplifting and soothing nature of the album.

Never more topical, Jenny Sturgeon explores our impact and interaction with the natural world. Truly evocative music that will, all being well, be taken out on the road next year as a musical and audio visual event. ****

Gig review: MARK MORRISS- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 3 October 2020

MARK MORRISS- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 3 October 2020

Perhaps it wasn’t quite squarely in GRTR’s ballpark, but the last time bands with guitars dominated the charts, possibly forever, was when Britpop ruled. Led by the likes of Blur, Oasis and Pulp, the movement defined the sound and style of a generation in the mid nineties. It then fizzled out rapidly after the shark-jumping moment of Noel Gallagher shooting the breeze with Tony Blair over the canapés at a Downing Street ‘Cool Britannia’ reception.

One of the bands who rode the movement’s coattails for a while were Hounslow’s The Bluetones, who even scored a No 1 album. So while this might not usually be my first choice of gigs, in the current climate a trip to the Cabbage Patch’s Patchworks bar in its new Covid-safe layout was a must, to be in the presence of a bona fide hit maker- and local boy made good- in their former lead singer Mark Morriss.

MARK MORRISS- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 3 October 2020

He was casual and down to earth in a most un rock’ n’ roll and rather sweltering red v-neck sweater , seated on a comfy chair with only an acoustic guitar and large glass of white wine for company. He opened with one of his solo numbers in ‘Its Hard to be Good All the Time’ then a large cheer of  delight from some old-time fans pierced the quiet, at the announcement of the first old Bluetones hit of the night ‘Marblehead Johnson’.

This contrast in response proved to be a running gag he played on, whenever he switched from solo songs to other oldies from the band such as ‘The Fountainhead’ and ‘Carry Me Home’. His sardonic and mordant wit was also applied to a table whose pizzas arrived mid-song just before the impressive ‘Surrendered’ and ‘Low Company’ took us to the interval.

MARK MORRISS- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 3 October 2020

The second set opened with the Bluetones first hit in ‘Bluetonic’ and surprisingly early he played their biggest hit ‘Slight Return’ (and, no, I also wondered where that title came from as it appears nowhere in the lyrics). Mark encouraged a singalong but our table fell victim to that cutting wit when accidentally applauding, thinking the song had come to a conclusion without realising there was a short coda.

Many of his own songs, notably ‘Digging a Hole’ and ‘The Beans’ had a wryly dark side to them though ‘Space Cadet’ was lighter in character. ‘A New Athens’ was probably the old Bluetones number I enjoyed the most (ironic that it had a slight REM feel to it) before the set closed with ‘Sleazy Bed Track’.

MARK MORRISS- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 3 October 2020

He encored with ‘So It Goes’ and ‘Never Going Nowhere’, the latter having a more instant hook than many of the songs, and segueing into an interesting treatment of the Eurythmics’ ‘Love is A Stranger’.

Britpop, along with several other short-lived fads, nevertheless gave us some talented songwriters who have had an impact beyond their relatively short time in the sun, and this night at close quarters with one such was proof.

Feature: Albums that time forgot…JAMES LABRIE – Elements Of Persuasion

JAMES LABRIE - Elements Of Persuasion

InsideOut (2005)

For many band members, the band becomes all consuming.  It means, as a result of the constant cycle of touring, writing and recording, they can’t deliver their own solo album.  There are 15 years between John Petrucci’s first solo album and his latest.  His Dream Theater colleague James LaBrie cut his first solo album (under his own name) in 2005.

For this project he brought together an Italian guitarist Marco Sfogli, Mike Mangini (who would ultimately replace Mike Portnoy in Dream Theater) and co-writer Matt Guillory (keys) with Bryan Beller (bass, who had worked with Steve Vai later Joe Satriani).  Guillory and Sfogli would remain a constant in subsequent albums.

Long-time fan and metal editor Yiannis Stefanis reviewing the album for GRTR! summed it up:

“After having listened to the album a couple of times, I realised what makes ‘Elements of Persuasion’ such a successful release.

Even though James has been living in the Dream Theater ‘environment’ for the last fourteen years, he managed to limit its influence and ended up presenting us with an album of unique style and character.

The idea was not to create another progressive opus, but an album full of straight-forward and emotional Rock/Metal compositions, which would also allow James to use his unique vocal chords to their full potential.”

Subsequently in a lengthy interview with Stefanis, LaBrie stated:

“Well, we definitely knew musically that we wanted to make a very aggressive and heavy album. I think a lot of that was because at the time of the inception of the ideas, we were both really into bands like Mudvane, Meshuggah, Linkin Park and Seven Dust. Also, we were listening to Peter Gabriel, so we kind of thought ‘how could we amalgamate these two different worlds, and bring them into the album so as to give it more depth and dynamics musically’?

It’s experimental, and some say that it’s risky, but Matt and I knew that as much as we wanted the album to be heavy, we also wanted to bring some other worlds to it, so to speak, like the techno beats and the samples.”

The album does reflect the popularity of nu-metal at the time, and is characterised by Sfogli’s gargantuan guitar figures, LaBries’s dominant vocal presence and Guillory’s intricate arrangements and sonic treatment.

Stefanis: “‘Crucify’ was indeed the best choice for the opening track of the album, featuring a fast, low corded guitar riff which will bring back memories from Metallica’s ‘Master of Puppets’ era.

The following track, ‘Along’, presents the different side of this album.  The use of a variety of electronic sounds may sound a bit strange in the beginning, but will prove to be quite inspiring after you listen to this release a few times (something similar to what Ray Alder did with his solo project ‘Engine’).

‘Freak’ was created in a similar manner to that of its predecessor and paves the way for ‘Lost’, one of the few songs that sounds quite like those of Dream Theater.

The first song I really got hooked on was ‘Lost’ – a very emotional song that’s based on a beautiful base melody. You will get a better taste of Marco Sfogli’s capabilities on ‘Undecided’, before James will once again demand your attention with his amazing performance on ‘Smashed’.

A constant relay of emotions will continue throughout the remaining songs of the album, and before you know it, you will hear the final notes of ‘Drained’ announcing the end of a sixty-seven minute inspirational creation.”

There has been news recently that LaBrie is preparing for a new solo album.  Whether it will quite match up to the 2005 effort is for future debate given the overall tenor of the following solo releases ‘Sudden Impulse’(2010) and ‘Impermanent Residence’(2013) which featured death metal vocals. ‘Elements Of Persuasion’ can be fully savoured in the meantime.

Album review: TOMI MALM – Coming Home

TOMI MALM – Coming Home

Website [Release date 16.10.20]

“Coming Home” is the second album from Finland’s classically trained writer/ producer/ musician, Tomi Malm. Three years after his highly successful “Walking On Air” album, he again recruits some of the best in the Westcoast Rock business. And you’ve got to be writing good stuff to attract Randy Goodrum, Bill Cantos, Frank Adahl and Jerry Lopez, plus keyboard player Robbie Buchanan, guitarists Tim Pierce and Steve Lukather, and more.

These are all seasoned professionals who can nail down a sound or a simple concept with clarity and vision. That Malm got them all involved speaks volumes for his his own skills and talents, and indeed, for his growing reputation.

Malm produces, and plays guitar and keyboards, But his single biggest contribution to his own album is his high calibre songwriting across all 16 tracks. “Walking On Air” marked him out as a convincing composer, capable of pushing past the boundaries of commerciality. And his latest batch of material, often armed with a slow burning fuse, credits its audience with musical intelligence, which means they’ll give the songs time to work.

Sometimes technical expertise is lacking in emotion: perfection can often inhibit the expression of feeling. Malmo gets past that by filling his songs with seductive hooks and hazy sonic colouring. The sweetened strings, the swells of horns and tinkling pianos all provide the richness of sound that his handpicked vocalists interpret.

The gentle grandiosity of songs like ‘Come Away’ (Bill Cantos), ‘Two Hearts’ (Jerry Lopez) and ‘The Time Is Now’ (Warren Wiebe) make date-stamps redundant. It’s timeless material, showcasing the kind of casually ornate songwriting and urbanity of tone which is growing Malm’s international profile.

Some songs rise above the others. Lushly textured and amply cushioned, ‘When You’re Gone’ and ‘Without Saying A Word’ have a rich, pastoral quality that was once captured by early Westcoast bands, before the genre turned into a Toto/Marx sound alike contest.

Malm’s dominant piano is economic and uncluttered, allowing the songs the space they need to shimmer and shine, creating a gravity defying weightlessness on the Burt Bacharach song ‘Leave It To The Girls’, filled with singer Ashton Moran’s honeyed tones. And again on ‘Dream On’, as Frank Adahl dreamily ponders issues of love and loss.

The jury is still out, but ‘Are You Real’ and ‘Coming Home’ are probably the picks. Both carry a little more lyrical weight, and manage that delicate balance between sentimentality and real feelings. But the truth is that there’s little to choose between tracks on this slow-growing but charming album. ****1/2

Feature: Albums that time forgot…DON DOKKEN – Up From The Ashes

DON DOKKEN - Up From The Ashes

Geffen Records (1990)

At the turn of the 1980′s there was a last hurrah for the genre that had sometimes been called glam metal, or more specifically hair metal.  Bolstered by albums such as Whitesnake (1987) and Winger (1988) the winds of change were blowing in the early 1990s.  And Sunset Strip was giving way to Seattle: grunge was on the way.

That didn’t stop a few more albums emerging in the early 1990s which owed much to the eighties melodic hard rock sound such as House Of Lords (Sahara, 1990) and  Shadow King (1991).  One of which was fronted by Don Dokken and released as a solo album in 1990.

During the eighties Dokken had been at the forefront of the hair metal genre but, by 1989, they had called it a day following the live album ‘Beast From The East’ and differences between Don Dokken and George Lynch.

Not able to use the band moniker for legal reasons, Dokken regrouped with Mikkey Dee on drums (ex-King Diamond who later joined Motorhead and Scorpions), Peter Baltes on bass (ex-Accept) and two guitar slingers: John Norum (previously with Europe) and Billy White from a thrash metal outfit Watchtower.

‘Up From The Ashes’ is really a continuation of the familiar Dokken sound, “just another incarnation of Dokken” as described by the frontman.  But it is marked by a greater consistency in songwriting and performance than latter-day band albums.

An album of highlights, not least the very complementary guitaring of Norum and White.  Whilst ‘Mirror Mirror’ and ‘Stay’ are real standouts they shouldn’t overshadow the likes of opener ‘Crash ‘N Burn’,  ‘Forever’ and ‘Down In Flames’.   ‘When Love Finds A Fool’ was a co-write with Glenn Hughes.  ‘Up From The Ashes’ is simply everything that is good about melodic hard rock and frankly a blueprint for any aspiring band in that genre.

The band toured in 1991 to promote the album, in North America and Japan.  Whilst pleased with the results, Dokken (and the label) was frustrated that the album didn’t sell in previous quantities and it wasn’t until 2008 that a second solo album emerged.

In the interim, after a brief reunion with George Lynch in 1993,  Dokken re-purposed the band that bore his name with Norum on guitar and Mick Brown and Jeff Pilson returning on drums and bass respectively.

At the apex of hair metal, ‘Up From The Ashes’ emerges as one of that genre’s crowning glories.

David Randall chatted to John Norum in 2009 when he recalled his time with Dokken in the 1990s (3:45)

Album review: PADRAIG JACK – Making Sand

PADRAIG JACK – Making Sand

Website [Release date 25.09.20]

Padraig Jack writes and sings in Gaelic and English, being born and raised 10 miles off the west coast of Ireland on the Aran Islands. Padraig has won second prize at the Pan Celtic National Song contest and his song ‘Minnie’ was shortlisted for the final of the Christie Hennessy song contest. He has also received numerous Gradaim NÓS Award nominations.

‘Making Sand’ is his debut album and what a delight it is. Padraig Jack successfully mixes elements of folk, indie pop and pop rock into one heady, enjoyable mix.

‘Let It Shine’ is a darn fine indie pop rocker, with a full backing band and jangly guitar chords, you can imagine this one blasting out at a summer festival. ‘Gospel Of Matthew’ continues in a similar vein, where the call and response backing vocals and guitars work well. A very strong double whammy to open the album with.

Despite the upbeat melodies, his lyrics pack a punch – ‘Hello Mum’ is about a son who finally realises what his mum meant to him but can only tell her headstone. ‘Long Goodbye’ is a moving song dealing with dementia, with a poignant line ‘he is weeping memories’.

‘Minnie’ is a classy piece of indie pop, made for the airwaves with a strong chorus and melody.

For those after a more folk narrative, ‘Fighting Irish’ does just that aided by pipes, whistles and a rousing backing chorus. ‘Smaointe Cailte’ highlights how Gaelic is a language perfect for song. He would be an ideal support act for Clannad’s farewell tour next year as he bridges traditional music and the world of pop, not a feat many artists can successfully pull off.

For a debut album Padraig Jack has many musical ideas going on and hopefully he will continue to plough a wide musical furrow, as his vocals suit the pop and folk moments equally. ****1/2

Album review: QUEEN + ADAM LAMBERT – Live Around The World

QUEEN + ADAM LAMBERT - Live Around the World

EMI [Release date 02.10.20]

Live Around The World presents a compilation of concert highlights captured the world over personally selected by Taylor, May and Lambert from over 200 shows they have performed and it is also the first release under the Queen + Adam Lambert banner.

The album covers concerts from Rock in Rio to the Isle of Wight Festival, Summer Sonic in Japan, and from one of their very last performances before lockdown, the Fire Fight Australia benefit show. At that show the band played their Live Aid set again in its entirety.

Despite being my all-time favourite band I never sadly got to see Queen with Freddie at the mic, however I did witness the excellent Freddie Mercury tribute concert and the Championship version of the band – Queen + Paul Rodgers (two great artists but sadly not magical when mixed together). As for Adam Lambert I hope to see him fronting Queen when live music fully returns (I am ever the optimist!) and until then can enjoy this live album.

He certainly goes full on camp at times and works the crowd with ease – the Japanese fans go wild on ‘Now I Am Here’ – and on ‘Don’t Stop Me Now.’ Adam Lambert doesn’t try to be Freddie vocal wise, however he makes ‘Somebody To Love’ his own and hearing that guitar solo, along with the gospel backing vocals is pretty special it has to be said.

It is not all the obvious hits though as pleasing to see ‘Tear It Up’ on the album, giving a chance for Brian May to show he still likes to riff out. ‘Love Kills’ allows Adam Lambert to show off his vocals – he is no shy, retiring type that’s for sure! Again, not an obvious choice for the live set.

Make sure you get the deluxe version of the album for the Fire Fight Australia benefit show, well worth the extra pennies.

Queen have released classic live albums (‘Live Killers’) and duffers (‘Live Magic’) and this latest official live release is more towards the former thank goodness.

I know some Queen fans won’t go near the current line-up which is their loss as it is great to see the band’s music still being peformed live. Queen are as popular as they have ever been and I am pretty sure Freddie would approve.

Album review: IKER PIRIS & HIS DUAL ELECTRAS – Electra

IKER PIRIS & HIS DUAL ELECTRAS - Electra

El Toro Records

Spanish bluesman Iker Piris releases his debut album with the Dual Electras – Abdell B. Bop (upright bass) and Andy Martin (drums). Piris has previously released a solo album and been involved with various blues artists in the past decade. He’s also picked up praise from fellow blues players including Kid Ramos.

Iker Piris mines the traditional blues to great effect. ‘I’m Gonna Move’ is a late night blues number, sublime slow guitar from Iker, the steady drumbeat and some lovely rolling piano from Victor Puertas.

‘Dance’ and ‘Helping Hand’ both impress with their rock ‘n’ roll riffs, proper floor fillers. You can imagine both of these going down a treat live. All the songs are written by Iker too, which when you listen to ‘Out Of Control’ you’d swear it was some 60′s number updated.

Special mention to ‘The Hunter’ that closes the album. Mainly instrumental – bar a few ‘huhs’ – it allows Iker Piris to showcase his guitar playing talents. A two minute rock ‘n’ roll strut. A perfect way to round off the album.

Those after a traditional blues meets rock ‘n’ roll fix look no further than this rewarding listen from Iher Piris and his band. ***1/2

Album review: GEOFF EVERETT BAND – Swamp Frog

GEOFF EVERETT BAND – Swamp Frog

Facebook [Release date 12.08.20]

It was only a matter of time before Kent’s-own blues aficionado, Geoff Everett, got deep and dirty in the Garden of England, disappeared into the swampland and emerged with a gunny sack full of lush slide-dripping tunes and interpretations. Armed with just a bottleneck and a lifetimes’ knowledge of open tunings, Geoff Everett is back with “Swamp Frog”, a worthy follow-up to 2018’s Night Patrol.

GRTR! has waxed lyrical for a good number of years now about this British blues treasure and Everett continues to amaze with his consistency of output and yet still surprise as he explores the many and varied facets of the blues in all their glory. This latest album is a mixture of originals plus Everett’s own interpretations of blues classics, something he does extremely well.

Whether the lovely lap-steel instrumental lament to lost loved ones (“Susan”) or the country-rockin’ jangle of “Rockin’ at Eric’s” about the landlord of the Priory Hotel in Dover, Everett demonstrates how to glide the slide to suit the mood.

There is something of a Sonny Landreth-meets-Chris Rea feeling to a couple of these songs (“Why Won’t You Love Me”, as an example) but there is so much more to admire. The album opener, a rousing rendition of Taj Mahal’s “Leavin’ Trunk”, almost has an AC/DC Heatseeker-feel to the way the riff, bass and drums kick-start the album.

“You Can’t Catch Me” offers up Everett’s moodier tempo and altogether dirtier take on the Chuck Berry cut whereas “Last Night (Backroom Jam)” is just that, conjuring up images of a smoky juke-joint and a sultry bluesman off in the corner taking a sweaty break to jam out his ode to long-lost love.

“Why Won’t You Love Me?” is another original where Everett lets rip with some great solo work built around a straightforward, chugging backbeat whilst title-track “Swamp Frog”, with its not-so-subtle double-entendre references, provides the Muddy Waters-inspired background canvas over which Everett can get into his groove.

“Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man” is a turbo-charged, in-yer-face version of the Richards/Jagger tune from the Stones’ Out Of Our Heads album – one of a few songs on the album where Everett blows harp through a home-made harmonica microphone, fashioned from an old metal mustard-tin-shaped valve previously used to control water flow in the attic boiler….that one never made it on to Blue Peter’s “One Thousand Things To Do With…..” list. This one fairly motors along and is one of two covers from the Stones back-catalogue – the other being one of my favourites in Mr. and Mrs. Womack’s “All Over Now”.

There is a blistering take on James “Beale Street” Clark’s “Look Over Yonders Wall”, first recorded in 1945, popularized by Elmore James and The Paul Butterfield Blues Band and now, of course, The Geoff Everett Band and what a romp this is – sounding for all the world like Rory Gallagher in his hey-day.

Its always such a pleasure and guaranteed-satisfaction to listen to Geoff Everett – a veritable disciple and trusted interpreter of classic blues moods. On Swamp Frog, he takes us on a celebration of electric slide and lap-steel guitar-playing, excelling on original tracks like “Can’t Go On Too Long” and “Rock Me”…..and respectfully breathing new life into well-worn blues standards of yore. ****

Gig review: GARY FLETCHER AND NICK RITCHIE – Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 2 October 2020

GARY FLETCHER AND NICK RITCHIE - Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 2 October 2020

Of course it’s trivial compared to those who have lost loved ones or their own livelihoods, but one of the biggest effects of the Coronavirus pandemic has been cutting live music dead in its tracks. Having been to over 80 gigs last year (and reviewed over 50 on this site) I’ve felt that void in my life more than most.

I fear that will continue for some time to come, but luckily a few enterprising promoters have made the best of circumstances as lockdown restrictions were lifted somewhat. My desperation for some live action meant I eagerly snapped up a couple of opportunities for live music, that might not have otherwise been priority in my usual jam-packed gig calendar.

GARY FLETCHER AND NICK RITCHIE- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 2 October 2020

GARY FLETCHER AND NICK RITCHIE- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 2 October 2020

For over 20 years now the Eel Pie Club in Twickenham has been keeping alive the spirit of the nearby Island that was such a hotbed of activity in the sixties, as demonstrated on the recent BBC4 documentary.  As a local, I’ve been a periodic attender for much of that time and they put on a series of socially distanced shows at their usual location at the Cabbage Patch pub, albeit in the beer garden.

This one featured Gary Fletcher, best known as bass player for The Blues Band, the Paul Jones-led supergroup, but also a respected singer and songwriter in his own right. Days before, it was wisely moved to an indoor bar when truly foul weather was correctly predicted. There were a few changes to the normal gig format- a reduced capacity on reserved tables arranged wedding style, and even the performers wearing masks as they made their way to the stage.

GARY FLETCHER AND NICK RITCHIE- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 2 October 2020

Gary was accompanied – in a matching baseball cap- by Nick Ritchie, current guitarist with Mud. The two worked very well together- although billed as an unplugged gig, Nick’s electric guitar complemented Gary’s acoustic very effectively, notably adding some very Mark Knopfler-like  textures to opener ‘I’ll Never Leave You’.

Gary, who was a genial storyteller, included a generous selection from his recent album release  ‘River Keeps Flowing’. Most of it was not in the main specifically blues based,  with a personal slant to the lyrics along with some darker material such as ‘No Shadow on the Wall’. Again, the gentle, almost conversational tone of his voice was complemented by some strong harmony singing from Nick.

GARY FLETCHER AND NICK RITCHIE- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 2 October 2020

They did an enjoyable take on ‘Nobody’s Fault but Mine’, the old blues standard, er, adapted by Led Zeppelin, while Gary switched from acoustic guitar to banjo for ‘Jacob Burkle’, a story song of a 19th century German emigrant to Memphis. The three songs before the interval  were rockier as Gary switched to electric, including two Blues Band numbers in ‘So Lonely’ and ‘I am the Doctor’, and one of the set highlights in the swampy blues feel of ‘Don’t You Come Creeping’.

The second half saw a reversion to those more personal songs including ‘I Can’t be Asking’ and  ‘May You Now Find Peace’ either side of the bluesier ‘Still the Same’.  ‘Hearsay’ went in a folky direction, Gary’s banjo and Nick’s guitar picking dovetailing nicely.  They closed with the old Blues Band favourite ‘Greenstuff’ – its hypnotic riff reminding me of ZZ Top’s ‘La Grange’ before returning for a solitary encore in gentler style in ‘That’s My Way’.

GARY FLETCHER AND NICK RITCHIE- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 2 October 2020

After an enforced exile of 199 days, this was a thoroughly listenable evening and a much more enjoyable than expected return to gigging.

Album review: THE EXPLORERS CLUB – To Sing And Be Born Again

THE EXPLORERS CLUB - To Sing And Be Born Again

Goldstar Records [Release date 16.10.20]

This covers’ album, simultaneously released with “The Explorers Club”, is a mixture of the obscure and the enduring. The picks self evidently come from an era that embraced bubblegum pop and sublime pop artistry at one and the same time. Which means we have the magnificent Frankie Valli/Walker Brothers’ monster worldwide hit ‘The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore’, and Dylan’s ‘The Mighty Quinn’ (a hit for Manfred Mann) on the one hand. And we have the lightweight, marshmallow pop of ‘I Wonder What’s She’s Doing Tonight’ (Boyce and Hart) and the sickly saccharin ‘Roses And Rainbows’ (Danny Hutton), on the other.

Too often though, Brewer adds nothing really new, making this more of a tribute album. But maybe that was his intention.

Even if no singer is ever likely to match Howard Kaylan’s richly toned, perfect weight sixties’ pop vocals, Brewer shows exquisite taste in covering ‘She’d Rather Be With Me’ (The Turtles). His cover version is reverential, probably out of respect and nothing more.

Some of the out-of-time material remains surprisingly roadworthy. Especially when Brewer does add something, like beefing up the production and arrangements, transporting the material from the past into the present.

The compact sophistication and fabulous guitar motif of ‘Kicks’ (Paul Revere & The Raiders) gets a full-on production treatment, with Brewer teasing up the middle eight very sympathetically. And the much covered (Jackie DeShannon, Peggy Lee (!!!)) ‘Didn’t Want To Have To Do It.’ (Lovin’ Spoonful) gets a sparse but gloriously romantic arrangement.

Of course, no sixties/seventies covers album will ever do those eras justice. But indulging in trivial pursuit can be fun. The Monkees: Boyce & Hart wrote almost all of the band’s early material (inc Last Train To Clarksville). At one point The Lovin’ Spoonful were being considered as the band to play the Monkees role, but the deal fell through over song copyright. Danny Hutton, singer of ‘Roses And Rainbows’ (and later to join Three Dog Night) auditioned, but lost out to Peter Dolenz. ***

Album review: EXPLORERS CLUB – The Explorers Club

EXPLORERS CLUB - The Explorers Club

Goldstar Records [Release date 16.10.20]

Less a revolving door band, more a fluid musical construct, The Explorer’s Club’s single constant is founder, Jason Brewer.

This is his fourth album in 12 years, not exactly prolific, but when you spend most of your time flying under the radar, cheered on by hardcore fans, you like to get it right when you break out into the open.

Brewer has a hand in all 12 soungs of course, six of them with eminent producer/musician/songwriter, Emeen (Spirit Kid) Zarookian, the rest with a variety of band/non band musicians.

With an unwavering eye on the tunesmithery and subtlety of late sixties pop, they’ve crafted an album of surprising depth and reach, with songs that often move beyond the shifting sands of pop pastiche onto the solid ground of their own unique sonic signature.

Like all great musicians they absorbed what they heard from the artists they grew up listening to. You could write off ‘Ruby’ as a rework of the Turtles’ ‘Elenore’. Without reaching its hooky pop heights, it has the same sprightly step.

‘One Drop Of Rain’ and ‘Love So Fine’ are rich in colour and mood. Like Bacharach and Motown, Brewer surrounds his vocals with elegant, dancing strings, muted trumpets, and tastefully sounding background singers. The other, a delightful patchwork quilt of sweet harmonies, has hints of the class and sophistication that artists like Brian Wilson and Harry Nilsson brought to pop music.

That said, it’s probably two songs in the album’s second half that are the most striking. Beautifully composed and orchestrated, the tune and the lyric of ‘Say You Will’ are clearly autographed by Brewer and Zarookian. They dig deep into the roots of Britpop, unearthing a rawer chord progression, one that stands in welcome contrast to what has gone before. And then ‘Somewhere Else’s restless guitar jangle and droning “psychedelic” vocals go a step further, completely embedding themselves in an era that ended more than 40 years ago.

The band’s fifth album “To Sing And Be Born Again” is released simultaneously. ****

Album review: MIKE ROSS – The Clovis Limit, Pt 2

Pete Feenstra chatted to Mike Ross for Get Ready to ROCK! Radio in June 2021.

Album review – MIKE ROSS: The Clovis Limit, Pt 2

Taller Records (Release date: 30.10.20)

Talented Brighton-based blues/americana merchant Mike Ross is back with a follow up to last year’s ‘The Clovis Limit, Pt 1’. Durham-born Ross has been a busy chap, releasing albums in each of the last three years as well as gigging and recording with the band RHR alongside Troy Redfern and Jack J Hutchinson.

Given that this is the second in the series, it’s probably wise to explain that The Clovis Limit is a reference to an Americana record store that science-fiction writer William Gibson invents in post-apocalyptical Portobello Road setting for the novel ‘The Peripheral’.

‘Pt 2’ in the Clovis series is a fine album plundering plenty of fuzzed up blues riffs and swaggering southern rock moves, with many high points and enough variety to keep the casual listener on their toes. Despite the reference to the fantasy Americana store, there are only few tracks here that mine the Americana or Country seam. This is a very different beast to the mellow, perhaps sedate ‘Pt 1’.

We kick off with ‘Thanks A Lot’, a guitar-driven thing showcasing changes of time and style, switching between a lugubrious riff, a cosy boogie and then a blues shuffle. ‘None of Your Business’ follows up with tighter lines and a strong, catchy, almost commercial vocal performance. The filthy slide guitar on ‘The Only Place You Ever Take Me is Down’ is gorgeous and when the organ comes in to take up the slack after the second chorus we are in nectar to honey territory right through to the home run.

Ross is a multi-instrumentalist. His guitar and vocal talents are well to the fore on this album. But he has also contributed the majority of the bass, drums, organ and percussion. Drummer Darren Lee makes an appearance here and there, as does Ricky Kinrade on bass. Otherwise it’s the Mike Ross show.

The same goes for the compositions. All Ross’s work, save for ‘Hammer’, recorded originally by Mother Sugar, which here features a beautiful fluid guitar solo, miles away from the gritty material that surrounds it.

There are a couple of instrumentals. ‘Tell Jerry’ is filled with sharp guitar lines and a funked up bass groove, whereas ‘Unforgiven’ is just a bit too close to The Allman Brothers’ ‘Jessica’ for the comfort of this reviewer.

‘The Loser’ was the first single from the album, and an odd choice because of the shift of focus to an unrepresentative country feel. It’s only temporary. ‘Leviathan’ builds from the sci-fi inspired synth transitions that link all the tracks into a slow-burning slide guitar swamp crawl. Hogjaw, anyone? Love it.

‘Don’t Say A Word’ takes us back to infectious, brash blues territory with blurred riffs, electric piano, organ and shots of wiry lead guitar. Album closer ‘ Shoot You If You Run’ is musically in a similar vein to ‘Leviathan’, but lyrically is the most ambitious on the album, tackling the Nazi propaganda peddled by Lord Haw-Haw in World War II. The closing four minutes of this nine-minute ramble are an unnecessary nurdle-fest played over distorted radio broadcasts, presumably of Haw-Haw himself.

A diverse album, then. Ignoring the odd weaker moments and a lack of real cohesion, it is layered with strong material. The overall feel and especially the guitar tone on the rockier tracks is a proper thrill and the best moments are lifted by some wonderful playing and fine singing. Plenty to like here. ****

Album review: BROTHER FIRETRIBE – Feel The Burn

BROTHER FIRETRIBE- Feel the Burn

Odyssey Music (Release Date 18.09.20)

With the release of their first album back in 2006, Brother Firetribe (alongside the Poodles and WigWam)  kick started the Scandinavian-led revival of melodic rock that is thriving to this day. Since then the only criticism has been they have not released their quality product often enough.

2020 sees a change on a number of fronts with guitarist Emppu Vuorinen leaving to focus full-time on Nightwish and perhaps taking a chunk of their fan base with them. For the first time the album artwork dispenses with their iconic logo, and there has also been a further shift in musical direction.  Previous two albums ‘Diamond In The Firepit’ and ‘Sunbound’,  while supremely melodic, did not have the intensity of their earlier work and ‘Feel The Burn’ takes the process a stage further, moving away from AOR towards a lighter, poppier sound.

‘I Salute You’ is in their traditional mould with trademark prominent keyboards, an anthemic chorus and a fine solo from new guitarist Roope Riihijärvii, albeit a bit lighter with less going on, but though ‘Arianne’ retains a symphonic feel, Pekka Ansiu  Heino’s vocals are huskier, almost like Chris Norman of Smokie.

However the succeeding songs take an even more experimental  step forward with ‘Night Drive’ having a synth pop feel and few guitars, and ‘Bring On The Rain’ is very dancey. Most controversial is ‘Chariot Of Fire’ whose Euro pop beat and ultra cheesy lyrics (‘street of dreams’)  calls to mind the more recent direction of fellow Finns Reckless Love.

With these, and the atmospheric ‘LoveIs A Lie’, they have taken a chance similar to fellow Scandi standard bearers HEAT on their even more experimental ‘Into The Great Unknown’ – and the way the latter went back to basics after alienating long-time fans is not a good omen.

On the other hand the lushly arranged ‘Ticking Away’ and ‘Battle Ground’ with a stirring chorus that owes much to Magnum in its delivery are more old school. ‘Candle In The Window’ combines a strong chorus with overly poppy synths though closer ‘Rock In The City’ is perhaps closest to old-school Firetribe, anthemic with stabbing keys.

A very strong set of well constructed songs, but the more pop direction- not unique to them among contemporary melodic rock acts, it has to be said – somewhat  undermines my enjoyment and makes this probably my least enjoyable of their five albums to date.  ***3/4
