Album review: ROCKY ATHAS – Livin My Best Life

Pete Feenstra chatted to Rocky Athas for his show on Get Ready to ROCK! Radio, playing tracks from the album ‘Living My Best Life’.  First broadcast 12 May 2024.

Rocky Athas - Livin My Best Life

Cherryburst Records [Release date 10.03.24]

‘Living My Best Life’ is Rocky Athas’s first solo album for 7 years, and from his opening sustained notes on the title track, it’s like he’s never been away.

The former John Mayall, Black Oak Arkansas, Buddy Miles, Glenn Hughes and Lightning guitarist (who also played with Double Trouble), is backed by a locked-in cross generational band.

Rocky is joined by Walter Watson on vocals and drums and respective sons, Rocky Athas 11 on bass, and Jared Watson on second guitar and harmony vocals.

It’s an intuitive road tested line-up with familial musical genes which fully contributes to inventive arrangements and a melodic approach that gives Athas his imposing sound.

All 10 tracks showcase his versatility and career influences through his personalised vibrato and a wide tonal array, with occasional hints of distortion and deft use of wah-wah.

His tones are the building blocks of an album full of different rock-blues styles, explored over well written originals and carefully chosen covers.

In fact the core of the album is based round the way he cleverly incorporates a number of significant guitar influences into his own material.

He rocks out on the ZZ Top influenced title track, which as the lyrics suggest, evokes “forward movement”.

He employs the kind of rich tone and fluid playing that has been his forte down the years and fattens the tracks with double tracked vocals on the hook.

Rocky then opts for a more piercing tone and acoustic chords on the pounding tom-toms of ‘In My Dreams’. It opens into a lush sounding sonic landscape of sumptuous slide, subtle percussion and cool harmony vocals, leading to a definitive solo.

He proudly wears his influences on his sleeve. There’s a big Leslie West style tone on the majestic boogie shuffle of ‘Dark Days’, on which everything is about the tone and a tension breaking solo.

He opens the Gary Moore influenced blues ballad ‘Sad Affairs’ with a clean tone, before moving to slight distortion and occasional pinched harmonics for emphasis, which he tops with an expressive warm conversational solo.

Then there’s an ode to Paul Kossoff and a Trower influenced wah-wah on Free’s ‘Walk In My Shadow’, which transforms the original to a slightly faster, more fluid Rocky Athas style attack.

Rocky’s solo career has always had to deal with the fact he doesn’t sing, which has led drummer Walter Watson filling the void left by the late Larry Samford.

Watson’s vocal versatility is evidenced on the cover of Dylan’s ‘Watching The River Flow’, on which he sounds like an enthusiastic Mick Jagger, while he’s at his best on a rip roaring version of Don Nix’s ‘Black Cat Moan’.

The latter is a song Rocky played in his younger days with Black Oak Arkansas. Here he attacks it aggressively with trademark riffs and wah wah flurries to evoke Jeff Beck (another influence), while his band gives him great support on organ, bv’s and Watson’s impressive vocal.

‘Living My Best Life’ has a cool sense of dynamics, and musical contrast, while his varied guitar style gives the 10 tracks real flow from beginning to end.

There’s a nod to Peter Green on ‘Long Grey Mare’ on which his former employer John Mayall contributes feverish harp, and then he changes direction again on the bass heavy and a subtly distorted tone of a sultry Latino groove called ‘Solid Ground’.

A lovely blend of a sinewy guitar tone with keyboards and percussion, complete with a double guitar line outro is an exemplar of the quality of this album.

It may be a musical departure, but it acts a timely reminder of his adventurous musical spirit.

He saves his final homage to one of his favourite guitarists Freddie King, on the oft covered Leon Russell/Don Nix co-write ‘Palace of The King’.

It’s given a tough arrangement on which he solos with real intensity leading to a breathless stop-time finish.

You sense that Rocky makes no apologies for this being an old school guitar driven album, as it’s a perfect reminder of what long time fans have been missing.

And in the spirit of the album title, it also looks forward, in delivering an essential calling card to new fans, who will discover one of Texas’s most durable guitar talents. ****

Album review: MANDOKI SOULMATES – A Memory Of Our Future

MANDOKI SOULMATES - A Memory Of Our Future

Red Rock Music/Inside Out Music [Release date 10.05.24]

I think it fair to say that Leslie Mandoki doesn’t do things half-arsed. Several years ago a couple of reissues were accompanied by an expansive press kit, a real thick tome that reminded me when labels (via their PR) really pushed the boat out. How times have changed.

In some respects, Mandoki’s music is like a return to the quality values of old. He comes across as the James Last of Jazz Prog/AOR, the latest release following the usual formula of corralling some of the genre’s finest.

I’ve been reviewing from a vinyl copy which makes sense as there’s another great USP: the album has been recorded on analogue equipment and cut to vinyl just like the old days. And, no expense spared, there’s an album sized booklet to complement the detailed liner notes.

And what of Mandoki? Perhaps surprisingly to us Brits he’s recently celebrated 30 years in the business. He’s more established as a top producer, especially in Germany to where he fled as a protesting student from Hungary in 1975 to avoid prosecution by the communist regime.

To be critical, there are only a handful of “killer” tracks but really you have to buy in to the “Soulmates” concept (with social and politically aware lyrics) and the whole package in general. Songs like ‘The Wanderer’, though, are a tad insipid along with ‘I Am Because You Are’ where Leslie Mandoki takes lead vocal. Together with the title track and ‘Matchbox Racing’ they suffer from the usual intonation issues when not singing in the native tongue.

Musically, whilst old school there’s some really good stuff here with the opener ‘Blood In The Water’ particularly impressive and lifted by Ian Anderson’s spritely flute and using a selection of vocalists. Anderson returns for the equally excellent ‘Devil’s Encyclopedia’. Jethro Tull were amongst Mandoki’s early musical heroes.

If you like eighties Toto you will warm to ‘A Memory Of Our Future’ and if you are an album trainspotter of a certain hue you will appreciate the contribution of jazz rock luminaries such as Al Di Meola, Mike Stern and Randy Brecker.

The production values are high and Alan Parsons Project is another comparison with the melding of sonic superiority and melodic musical invention. At it’s heart, though, is a jazz rock sensibility – overtly displayed on ‘Melting Pot’ – which could be too much for some and leads to a certain imbalance.

In those liner notes when not thanking his fellow collaborators Mandoki evidently has strong views on music making and the world in general: “…passing the torch from us old rebels to our young cohort must be postponed…it’s up to my generation to provide the compass to show the way out.”

And maybe ‘The Big Quit’ – another killer track – underlines the philosophy “we got Zoom, we got Skype/we got everything but real life.” We refer readers to our previous review (link below) where the themes (and musical shortcomings) haven’t changed. And, as previously, Mandoki’s daughter makes a welcome and – sadly – rare appearance on lead vocals.

Musically and aesthetically the album – ultimately revealing human inconsistency in the playlist – may be seen as end of days before the inevitable onslaught of AI. Enjoy the old world while you can. ***1/2

Gig review: KIRA MAC – Camden Underworld, London, 10 May 2024

KIRA MAC- Camden Underworld, London, 10 May 2024

Kira Mac have been making quite a name for themselves- for a new band they seem to have attracted a substantial following in a relatively short time, to the extent that by show time of this London date, the last of the tour, the Underworld was as packed as I’ve seen it for a while, albeit generally with my fellow fifty something males.

On the other end of the age spectrum are support band Jayler, so improbably fresh faced I couldn’t help imagining them as the band of pupils that have turned up at the sixth form dance. They made a dramatic opening with a lengthy intro tape and his three band members tuning up before frontman and part-time guitarist James Bartholomew – looking like Robert Plant at the dawn of Zeppelin before he discovered the hair dye- fairly tore onto the stage to launch into opener ‘Acid Rain’.

KIRA MAC- Camden Underworld, London, 10 May 2024

The youngsters freely admit their debt to classic seventies rock, although I just wish they and many others of their ilk would realise that it did not just begin and end with Led Zeppelin. Although to be more accurate, on ‘When You Go’ and ‘The Getaway’ my gig buddies and I were drawing close comparisons to Greta Van Fleet.  ‘Lovemaker’ was overly close in places to ‘Whole Lotta Love’ before a lengthy and mystical closer in ‘The Rinsk’, about a Viking warrior, natch!

What was impressive though was their stagecraft with James and lead guitarist Tyler Arrowsmith both pulling some classic poses and making full use of risers at the front of the stage to the delight of the many photographers present. They are a very promising band to keep an eye on though they need to establish their own musical and songwriting identity.

KIRA MAC- Camden Underworld, London, 10 May 2024

A Tenacious D record as the intro got people in party mood for the Kira Mac set, which opened with ‘Save Your Whiskey’ and ‘Dead Man Walking’. There had been several line-up changes since last year’s London headline, down to a solitary guitarist and with a new rhythm section in Vernon Lee Whitmore and Loz Riley. The overall effect was that the sound seemed heavier and more uncompromising, similar to the way the Kris Barras Band has evolved over the last couple of years.

Singer Rhiannon ‘Kira’ Hill doubtless fulfils many of the fantasies of the middle-aged rockers present with her waist length blonde hair blown by the on stage fan , leather trousers and tattoos. But more importantly she has a rare assurance and confidence as a frontwoman, epitomised by the way she divided the audience in a singalong to the ‘take it to the level below’ chorus on the title track of their album ‘Chaos is Calling’.

KIRA MAC- Camden Underworld, London, 10 May 2024

The set was a mix of songs from that and a yet to be released sophomore, yet I recognised nearly all of them as ones the band has been playing for a while. Indeed after ‘Playing The Game’ and ‘No Way Out’ followed in quick succession, ‘Scorned’ had the crowd  instantly shouting out the ‘hell hath no fury like a woman scorned’ line.

However the set then took a totally different turn. Kira had made her name as a country singer in a previous life and a twang that you can always hear at the margins was pushed forward during an acoustic interlude which opened with ‘This Time’ before guitarist Joe Worrall joined her for some favourite country-related covers in ‘Say Something’ from Chris Stapleton, then Nate Smith’s ‘Whiskey On You’ and Warren Zeiders’ ‘Ride The Lightning’, all of which were impressive if previously unfamiliar to me.

KIRA MAC- Camden Underworld, London, 10 May 2024

Plugging in again, a cover of ‘You Oughta Know’, had vast parts of the crowd shouting out the lyrics. Personally, it was my least favourite moment of the night, though Alanis Morissette seems to have belatedly become the NWOCR movement’s cover artist of choice with both Inglorious and Bad Touch having added one of her songs.

Fortunately their own numbers again followed in rapid fire fashion with ‘Hit Me Again’, ‘Hell Fire and Holy Water’, ‘Never Gonna Stay’ (sold by Kira as a ballad but in reality little of the sort, just a little more mid-pocket than the other material), and ‘Mississippi Swinging’. The one irritation was an over enthusiastic crew member on stage taking photos, whose presence I thought was a little too intrusive and distracting attention from the band.

KIRA MAC- Camden Underworld, London, 10 May 2024

Two of the newer songs in ‘Falling’ and ‘Keep On Climbing’ were billed as heavier, yet though the rhythm section in particular was crunching the hooks and melodies were still very much present and correct. They left the stage and returned swiftly for a pair of closers of this fast-paced set in the hook-filled ‘Downfall’ and one of their best-known songs in ‘One Way Ticket’.

This gig was a particularly interesting one, seeing them develop in a slightly heavier direction, yet taking a left turn with that acoustic country interlude. They have a dynamic live show and seem to have hit on a winning, and distinctive formula, so I get the feeling Kira Mac are here to stay. Watch them go when that second album comes out.

Album review: T BEAR – The Way Of The World

Pete Feenstra chatted to T Bear for his feature show on Get Ready to ROCK! Radio and featuring tracks from the new album ‘The Way Of The World’.  First broadcast 19 May 2024.

T Bear - Way of the World

Quarto Valley Records [Release date 22.03.24]

‘Way of the World’ is an aptly titled album by T Bear – the artist formerly known as Richard T. Bear – a singer - songwriter whose own durable songcraft glues together an eloquent set of original songs, shot through with sumptuous grooves, salient melodies and real poise.

Some might call it old school, especially given the retro feel that permeates the album’s sonic textures. But that would be to overlook the simple fact that after a 3 decade absence from the music business he’s tapped into the contemporary roots-rock market, as evidenced by a lofty chart position in The Netherlands.

Put simply, ‘Way of the World’ is a thoughtful roots album, written during lockdown and brought to life organically, via a series of home recordings at various guests respective locations.

The result is a slightly lo-fi approach to lyrical substance and subtle playing, which always serves the song and helps tease out the contours of some great songs and chunky hooks.

Bear’s own vocal style is never too far removed from both Dr. John and Leon Russell, as his southern drawl and intuitive piano work gives the music a lived in feel.

It’s all there on the lilting funky title track, on which his gentle humorous lyrics are underpinned by a tight rhythm section and are given real heft by guitarist Laurence Juber’s use of contrasting tremolo accompaniment and a short piercing solo.

The fact that drummer Tony Braunagel is also Bear’s co-producer helps bring a consistent lightness of touch to the proceedings.

As an example, Braunagel switches to deft brush strokes on the close-to- the-mic ‘Jewell’, a truly outstanding track with a luscious piano line, an evocative late night vocal and a whispered hook that lodges firmly in the brain.

It’s an object lesson in less is more, with the focus solely on his breathy vocals, while the band beautifully supports a wonderful song.

There’s also plenty of contrast and dynamics in the album sequencing. ‘Signed on the Dotted Line’ for example, has an uplifting quality with girly bv’s and a sinewy guitar line from Juber, while ‘Walter Mitty’s Glasses’ slips into an unexpected reggae groove, mirroring Bear’s 1984 ‘Manhattan Reggae’ release.

He approaches the album with broad canvas in mind, with the intention of matching his inventive lyrics with a requisite musical accompaniment, as on the Bo Diddley beat of ‘A Change Will Do Me Good’, and the quasi Latino groove and humorous hook of ‘Your Husband’s Got A Gun’.

The latter finds the other co-producer Laurence Juber on rough-hewn slide and sculpted wah wah, which provides the perfect foil for Bear’s percussive piano style.

He also brings a softer focus to the material with 3 acoustic contributions, including the melodic ‘This Bird Has Flown’, which in spite of The Beatles title is more of an ethereal track. It’s anchored by Braunagel’s percussive snap and an aching pedal steel riff, which is nicely topped by a beautiful horn arrangement.

Then there’s ‘Breathe’ a lockdown “bearrapy“ (aka therapy) song which has already seen the light of day on Walter Trout’s Broken’ album.

Bear’s own version garners extra presence via his weathered vocal, measured piano lines and a faux string arrangement.

And if ‘Breathe’ will doubtless resonate with plenty of folks, ‘Dinner For One’ is a one of his best story telling songs.

It’s a lovely blend of Latino rhythms, drifting piano and mid-70’s Dylan phrasing. There’s also a tinge of Randy Newman style irony to go with the filmic imagery, all topped by a lovely acoustic break, a belated tempo change and a cha cha finish!

He gets more funky on ‘They Can Kill You’, complete with bv’s and horn stabs in a Steely Dan vein.

The great thing about this album is the way everything flows seamlessly. The band provides Bear with the perfect support, as they really get inside the songs to let the melodies flow and the hooks bubble to the surface.

The composite interplay is a mirror image of Bear’s thoughtfully woven lyrics. There’s never a wasted note, while he’s rigorous in both his story telling abilities and arrangements.

He rounds things off with the fittingly titled ‘True Romance’, which reflects his own romantic persona on an album that subtly slips between the autobiographical and real life influenced fiction.

He’s a wry story teller who offers a sting in the tail on a bonus track called ‘Red Harvest’, which is an all too real observation about The Ukraine on a heartfelt duet with label mate Paul Rodgers.

It’s lyrically strong song with a sonorous violin line, and while it curiously lacks the same musical impact as the rest of an impressive album, it still serves to provide a moving footnote to 13 tracks that are never anything less than meaningful and personal. ****

Album review: THESE WICKED RIVERS – Force Of Nature

THESE WICKED RIVERS - Force Of Nature

Fat Earth Records [Released date 01.03.24]

This is a perfectly formed second album from Derby’s finest. Formed in 2014, the band combine elements of southern, classic and heavy rock.

The title track is a great calling card and guaranteed to go down well live, instantly catchy and likeable. The ballsy rock is also well evidenced on the likes of ‘The Family’ and ‘Black Gold’, easily giving bands like Blackberry Smoke a run for their money. The Georgia Thunderbolts also come to mind and they’ve been compared to Clutch.

‘Testify’ is a slice of bluesy southern rock whilst ‘The Riverboat Man’ and ‘Lord Knows’are satisfyingly riff-driven. The calmer tracks are also convincing such as ‘When The War is Won’ and ‘Lonely Road’.

Derby isn’t a million miles from Castle Donington and this band should show up there sooner than later. ****1/2

Album review: THE TREATMENT – Wake Up The Neighbourhood (plus album launch, 11 May 2024)

The Treatment - Wake Up The Neighbourhood

Frontiers [Release date 10.05.24]

The Treatment have released their much-anticipated 6th studio album, “Wake Up The Neighbourhood”, after teasing us with singles that could only hint at the epic masterpiece that was to follow.

For the uninitiated, The Treatment are a 5-piece rock band, formed in 2008 in Cambridge, who deliver a modern take on absolute classic rock with blistering enthusiasm and energy.

The influences are clear but span decades, listen and you can hear hints of DIO, Slade, AC/DC to Kid Rock and Nickelback, that combined with Tom Rampton’s vocal range and the band’s killer musicianship, this is a masterclass in classic rock revivalism.

The Treatment’s back catalogue includes “This Might Hurt” (2011), “Running With The Dogs” (2014), “Generation Me” (2016), “Power Crazy” (2019), and “Waiting For Good Luck” (2021), which was the album of 2021 for me.

Notwithstanding their own catalogue, they have shared the stage with legendary acts like KISS, Mötley Crüe, Steel Panther, Thin Lizzy, and Alice Cooper – they are immense live, even bigger than the albums suggest, truly a class act on the rock scene.

So, what can “Wake Up The Neighbourhood” deliver, the bar has been set so high, can The Treatment deliver another belter….. the singles (‘Let’s Wake Up This Town’, ‘Back To The 1970’s’ and ‘When Thunder And Lightning Strikes’) released so far suggest we are in for a treat.

“We wanted to create an album that pays homage to the golden era of rock ‘n roll while infusing our own modern twist,” says the band. “With ‘Wake Up The Neighbourhood’, we’ve pushed ourselves to new heights and crafted an album that we’re truly proud of.” Time to have a listen and see what we have got!

1. Let’s Wake Up This Town – from Tom’s opening rallying call, this is setting the scene for an absolutely classic rock ‘n’ roll single let alone album, surely this is enough to wake up the masses to the fact that rock is well and truly alive, this established band deserve more attention in the rock community. Watch the video here

2. Back To The 1970′s – this track is Glam rock at its finest, upbeat and fun showcasing Tom’s vocal style perfectly, the guitar solo is sweet perfection in this foot-stomping crowd pleaser. Let’s do it all again indeed!

3. When Thunder and Lightning Strikes has a much heavier opening groove and serious guitar riffage, I absolutely love this track and can imagine many air guitars in flight.

4. This Fire Still Burns keeps up the high energy, fast-paced rock with clever lyrics, the songwriting throughout the album is clever and speaks to us all, “don’t put your trust in me. I’m a catastrophe. ” This track is off the scale.

5. Man On The Highwire gives you story telling at its finest, crafting that imagery of the Circus and the thrills of watching the acts, with hearts in our mouths, are we all secretly hoping for a spill or a near miss? “Look up, look up look up because I’m the man here to thrill you all, because you want to see me fall”. I found myself returning to this track and its opening bouncy rhythm time and time again – now decided it is my favourite track for the storytelling and the musicianship.

6. I Can’t Wait No Longer is an arm waving, crowd swaying softer, retro vibe track with great harmonisation.

7. Don’t Make No Difference – This will blow your cobwebs away, very AC/DC “Live and let live, it’s the only way I know”, blistering pace delivering a masterclass in rock again, heavier with great rhythm and groove showcasing the whole band

8. Fire Me Up – another belter, this album just keeps building and building, this pace is relentless, a hurricane indeed!

9. Free Yourself is a softer song, with a little soul searching and motivating people to basically look within themselves “You’ve got to free yourself, don’t live for no one else”

10. Kick You Around – perhaps the track is reminiscent of (poor) social behaviours in the current climate, encouraging people to stand their ground and not let people kick them around. This is a drum driven track showcasing Dhani and all of his skills

11. I’ve Got My Mind Made Up (and I ain’t ever gonna change it) had me from the get-go this is a really positive uplifting track,” I leave my worries all behind me to walk the sunny side of the street” what a great way to sign off a phenomenal album.

This album demonstrates how far The Treatment have come in the intervening 3 years since ‘Waiting for Good Luck’. The quality of the song writing, and the musicianship is sublime, what will these songs be like live, I ponder ?

So off to the album release party I went, picture the scene, it’s Cambridge, it’s a gloriously sunny evening and here are we are in MASH, which is packed with Treatment fans keen to hear the band’s new album.

We are all in for a huge treat as The Treatment open with an acoustic set, showcasing their absolute class delivery and including a couple of the new tracks as well as some older favorites that rarely get played.

Next up are their guests Mansworth who rally the troops and provide a blistering 30-minute set ably led by Laurie Mansworth and fronted by Rob Angelico. The crowd are enraptured, what a great night this is!

Now for the main event, The Treatment in all of their glory and ready to party, waste no time, opening with ‘Let’s Wake Up This Town’, delighting everyone with ‘Back To The 1970’s’ and delivering epic track after track of pure rock, with a full set. What a roof-raising set, what a crowd (you could hear a pin drop), what a night! It was an absolute privilege to be there, this band is so hot right now; they are practically on fire!

If this album doesn’t act as a call to arms for the rock community to show some appreciation and love for modern Rock bands. I don’t know what will.

From Tom’s rallying vocals to the sublime guitars of the Grey Brothers and the heavy rhythm section provided by Andy & Dhani, this album takes the band to a stellar level with every track delivering refined, majestic rock, it’s a nod to the past showing the band’s love and appreciation of what came before them. What is even more impressive is that the songs were all recorded within 24 hours!

I am saying it right now – best Treatment album to date and already album of the year, status beyond killer! 5 stars is not enough! *****

Album review: MARISA AND THE MOTHS – What Doesn’t Kill You

MARISA AND THE MOTHS - What Doesn't Kill You

Tonesick Records [Release date 03.05.24]

I first became aware of Marisa And The Moths during Lockdown and they ultimately produced some excellent stripped back versions of their songs, not least a truly wonderful version of ‘Choke’. At that time they also had Sophie Lloyd in their ranks but the guitarist left soon after. I assume she had become a major distraction judging by her solo videos/marketing that followed.

This is MATM’s second album and they completed a successful series of UK dates following release in early May.  We’ve already had a sneak preview of songs with the release of an EP in early 2023 and this lends an air of familiarity for those who have followed them since.

The band are fronted by Marisa Rodriguez who also writes the material. This reflects a number of prominent (and topical) issues – borne from personal experience – reflected in songs like ‘Gaslight’ and ‘Wither Away’. Great support throughout from guitarist Alessio D’Elia, bass player Liam James Barnes and drummer Alex Ribchester.

‘Cursed’ is an unexpected and confident opener, a ballad that benefits from a symphonic backing and puts the band firmly in Evanescence-style quality territory. Halestorm will be another band that springs to mind.

Elsewhere the album is a mix of grungey and angsty rockers like ‘Get It Off My Chest’ and ‘Who Are You Waiting For’. An uplifting chorus is never far away and only ‘Devil You Know’ deviates slightly with an untypical shouty metalcore vocal (Marisa otherwise excels throughout).

This – an album borne out of societal frustration, broken relationship and mental/health issues – is a torch for Marisa to carry forward. Rock’s Taylor Swift for the Gen-Z’s?  ****

Album review: ATTIC THEORY – What We Fear The Most

ATTIC THEORY - What We Fear The Most

ThunderGun Records [Release date 26.04.24]

It shows an album’s strength when four tracks are pre-released as “singles”. There could have been more. The debut album from this Liverpool band is a great example of burgeoning home grown talent in 2024.

It can be no coincidence that the album is produced by Loic Gaillard who has worked with fellow Scousers Revival Black and Ashen Reach. It’s evident that, as with many young bands, the pandemic held them back although they did release a well-received debut EP.  GRTR!’s Jason Ritchie was also impressed “Attic Theory have plenty of promise and sure to win them even more fans and plaudits.”

Since that time the band have had three changes in the line-up, replacing their drummer, bassist and losing a guitarist.

What makes Attic Theory stand out are the super smooth vocals of Lewis Wright. ‘Violent Delight’ is a good example where he shifts from a soulful croon to a more anthemic chorus with ease. Ditto on ‘Tattooed Heart’ and ‘Sweet Parasite’.

On ‘Narrow Lines’ the vocal style reinforces comparisons with Peter Cox in eighties pop band Go West (albeit a lower-pitched version) whilst ‘Million Little Things’ and ‘Your Light’ are the two ballads.

‘Papier Mache’ is a shared vocal with Candlebox’s Kevin Martin and the real album standout, a track that brought the band to our attention last year. This could easily gather momentum on the other side of the pond.

The band have recently added Lucy Ellen on bass and backing vocals. This brings a new and refreshing element to the band’s sound as evidenced on the excellent album closer ‘The Legacy’.

My only reservation is an inconsistency in the mix and production which I don’t think does full justice to the songs and musicianship on offer and not least those quite superb vocals. The listener will also be more than aware of a ticking kick drum which seems too prominent on some tracks and a lack of bass guitar pump. There’s a feeling that perhaps these tracks have come together over an extended period of time and reflect different recording methods.

Overall, though, a promising start. File with bands like Dead Man’s Whiskey, Florence Black and South Of Salem who are flying the flag, and the future, for UK-based heavy rock. ***1/2

Album review: TYLER BRYANT & THE SHAKEDOWN – Electrified

tyler bryant and the shakedown electrified

Rattle Shake Records [Release date 10.05.24]

Album number six from Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown who still don’t look old enough to have made so many albums. Seemingly down to a trio of  Tyler Bryant (vocals, guitar) Caleb Crosby (drums), and Graham Whitford (guitar, backing vocals) with bassist Ryan Fitzgerald no longer featured in band line-up photos.

It says a lot about the quality of the album in that the single, ‘Snake Oil’, is perhaps not the stand out. That said, it is still a fine piece of blues rock with an instantly memorable chorus. The ZZ Top fuelled ‘Between the Lines’ or ‘Happy Gets Made’ are the stand outs amongst the stand outs!

The good thing with a Tyler Bryant album is you get the odd curveball, as the beautifully sung gospel blues of ‘Happy Gets Made’. Ruthie Foster duets with Tyler on this one to great effect. Larkin Poe guests on the album’s other quieter moment, ‘One and Lonely’.

Slide guitar joy on ‘Movin’, a song that screams to be played live, whilst ‘Shake You Down’ will clear any stuffy head with its pounding beat and insanely catchy guitar & chorus.

Seeing the album out is ‘Carefree Easy Rollin’ which is a southern rock beauty. Those guitars and drums fit in an easy groove behind Tyler’s vocals.

It’s rock ‘n’ roll done the Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown way and all the better for it. The bigger headline spots and fan base can only be a short time away. Crank it up and enjoy thirty six minutes in the company of one of the finest acts around at the moment. ****1/2

Album review: BLACK SABBATH – Anno Domini 1989-1995

BLACK SABBATH - Anno Domini 1989-1995

BMG [Release date 31.05.24]

Another solid box from BMG, and four long out-of-print albums get a release. This set features Headless Cross (1989), Tyr (1990), Cross Purposes (1994) and Forbidden (1995). And before anyone goes “The Tony Martin Years”, this is at no point mentioned on the package.

A much underrated and overlooked period in Sabbath’s history, this set has been long due, much anticipated, and looks a wonderful package, even if it doesn’t quite do what it says on the tin.

There are many eras in the Sabbath history, and as Iommi is quoted in the book; If someone leaves a company, you don’t change the company name, you just carry one with someone else. And that’s exactly what they’ve done. And with the band’s deal with Vertigo coming to an end, the band signed to IRS and a new era opened.

After a period of flux, mid 80s, things looked like they’d start to settle for Black Sabbath, following the excellent Eternal Idol album in 1987. For that album, singer Tony Martin had been drafted in at short notice, too late to be involved with the song writing. By the time the band came to record Headless Cross (the first album here), he was settled in the band and able to contribute.

1989’s Headless Cross featured, alongside Tony Martin and guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Laurence Cottle, keyboard player Geoff Nicholls and drummer Cozy Powell (the latter fresh out of Gary Moore’s band). This album regularly features in fans’ favourite Sabbath albums and rightly so.

Here the production is solid, crisp, clean and clear, making their early work sound almost sludgy by comparison. And after the instrumental intro of The Graves Of Hell, the title track kicks off with a wonderful and equally heavy riff, and Martin’s vocals do stand out. A voice that suits Sabbath perfectly, as on stage he could handle both the Ozzy and Dio material excellently, mixing it up fluidly.

By all reports Powell’s strength of character brought much to the band and he and Iommi worked well, producing the album together too.

The track Devil And Daughter is another wonderful track, heavy yet accessible. Then When Death Calls, just shy of 7 minutes, an atmospheric start that builds well, and features a guitar solo from Brian May. Overall it’s an essential listen, Sabbath or otherwise. The only bonus is the original CD bonus track Cloak And Dagger.

1990’s Tyr, now featuring bassist Neil Murray as a full time member (he’d joined for the Headless Cross tour). A heavier and darker album, a departure from the more usual Sabbath sound, it’s still a great album. Hearing it again here now, while many contemporary reviews had issue with the drums drowning out everything ese, yes they’re prominent, but that period comment is just not true. This is one of Sabbath’s hardest albums to find so good to have a reissue here.

While a few songs talk about Norse mythology, it’s far from a concept album. Quite intense at times, so the lighter (almost whimsical) Odin’s Court breaks it up nicely. Sadly no bonus tracks, which could have included the live material added to the single from the album. I was at the Hammersmith show on this tour, where Brian May guested, and it was wonderful, and testament to how well Tony Martin could cover the Dio and Ozzy material.

Back in 1996, Cozy told me “I thought that was a good period in the band’s life. Everyone got on really well. No complaints, it just all went downhill from there”.

For 1992’s Dehumanizer it was all change, with the Mob Rules line-up returning. As Cozy told me: “I’d had an accident with a horse and was unceremoniously booted out the band. Ronnie Dio came back in and didn’t really want me in the band anyway.

I had turned down his solo album to stay in Rainbow, maybe that’s been a sore point. He got booted out of Rainbow and asked me in spite of Ritchie, and since then has hated my guts”. Although with the injury, the timescale of recording could have been an issue. That album has been previously reissued as a 2CD, so is not included here.

Skip to 1994’s Cross Purposes, and a returning Tony Martin, the album also featured keyboard player Geoff Nicholls, original bassist Geezer Butler and former Rainbow drummer Bobby Rondinelli. Another great album, and another from the period getting it’s first official reissue.

A good album, and strong and varied lyrics, but more notable fillers than the previous two albums. A live album followed; “Cross Purposes Live”, that sadly is not featured here.

Last album is Forbidden, which is given a remix here. Although the band featured a returning Cozy Powell and Neil Murray, the album’s recording did not go smoothly, and the reception upon release was not good.

In hindsight that’s a little unfair. Produced and mixed by Body Count’s Ernie C (a record company decision) was perhaps not the best decision in the world, and a producer telling Cozy Powell how to play the drums is Route One to upsetting everything. And it did. Outside commitments and contracts made it difficult for everyone to be in the studio at the same time too.

The album tried to infuse trad heavy metal and blues, there are some good and solid moments, and compared to the original release it does sound better from Iommi’s remix. However, for all the band’s efforts, it lacks vibe and cohesion.

Cozy sums it up with: “I was invited back and I tried to recreate the same spirit that was there when we did the ‘Headless Cross’. Unfortunately this time it wasn’t quite there, I don’t know why. Maybe people change over the years, there were a couple of things that weren’t quite right, then they brought in a producer who’s never really done a heavy rock album before. His ideas, whether good or bad, featured on the drums, so my drum sound went out the window.

I was very unhappy with the way the kit sounded and the way that I played. I couldn’t really promote ‘Forbidden’ and say it was the greatest thing I’d ever done when I didn’t believe it. I backed off from the promotional tour, because if you don’t feel that way it’s better not to do it at all.

We did a tour of America which was absolutely horrendous, possibly the worst tour I’ve ever done. It was badly booked. The agent in America did it at the last minute, we weren’t drawing the audiences that we wanted to, the record company were not getting behind the band. It was a very difficult time. I also had a few personal problems. I needed to get off the road which I couldn’t do because the tour was 8 months solid, so I said to the manager I’d finish the U.S. tour and get out and you find a replacement drummer”.

Over the four albums (each in a card sleeve with poly inner – tick), you probably have two 10/10 essential albums in Headless Cross and Tyr, and another album’s worth of solid (almost excellent) Sabbath. And between album(s) not included and the lack of bonus tracks, a missed opportunity or two.

But then on to the package, which is wonderful. Almost faultless. A Headless Cross poster and repro full tour program make a good start. Then the book, with notes from Hugh Gilmore, full of quotes from members of the band. Very informative.

Absolutely top marks for the package, some fantastic music long overdue, but a missed opportunity or two.  ****1/2

Album review: DEMON – Invincible

DEMON - Invincible

Frontiers [Release date 17.05.24]

You’d be forgiven for thinking you’d stepped back in time to the late 70s/early 80s, as the first half of 2024 has seen new albums from the likes of Magnum, Saxon, Judas Priest, Praying Mantis, Tygers Of Pan Tang (albeit a live album) and now Demon. It has been eight years since Demon’s last release, the enjoyable ‘Cemetery Junction’, during which time former Saxon bassist Paul ‘Fasker’ Johnson has re-joined the band.

The demon behind Demon, Dave Hill, has found another good writing partner in drummer Neil Ogden, as Hill always seems to deliver the goods with a decent co-writer as he has in the past with Steve Watts and Mal Spooner (RIP).

The album artwork is a thing of beauty too. One you can lose yourself in whilst listening to the album.

After a Jon Lord-tastic Hammond-led instrumental opener ‘Intro’, the band hit hard with the catchy ‘In My Blood’. With all the band (bar keyboards player Karl Waye) adding backing vocals, they add a extra bit of magic to the songs. Speaking of magic, the keys of Karl Waye give the album’s sound that extra bit of depth, as do the SFX which can be heard throughout the album (the marching armies on the title track a prime example).

Dave Hill still sounds on top vocal form, be it on ‘Ghost From The Past’ – where he sounds at times like fellow Stoke legend Lemmy – or ‘Beyond The Darkside’ and ‘Rise Up’, both are foot-on-the-monitors hard rockers. Guitarists Dave Cotterill and Paul Hume provide plenty of riffs and sizzling solos throughout the album.

Lyrically Demon cover many of their usual subjects be it UFOs, the afterlife, the devil or horror films. The single ‘Face The Master’ is a horror based one (despite that intro reminding me of Hi-De-Hi!) and one for the band’s live set.

‘Hole In The Sky’ harks back to the band’s more prog rock moments, featuring all manner of keys and guitar effects. ‘Cradle To The Grave’ treads a similar progressive musical path, with a music box intro through to an ending with a nice bit of evil cackling from Mr Hill!

A ballad ‘Forever Seventeen’ closes the album with the album’s most personal lyrics and one many rockers of a certain can relate too.

Fame maybe fleeting, but class is permanent and Demon are back with another class album full of their trademark melodic hard rock. Those fans expecting another ‘Night of the Demon’ or ‘The Unexpected Guest’ may feel disappointed, but if like me, you’ve loved their albums from ‘The Plague’ through to ‘Hold On To The Dream’ and those released since 2001′s ‘Spaced Out Monkey’, you will be loving this album after a couple of spins. ****

Book review: On track…THE DIVINE COMEDY by Alan Draper

On Track...THE DIVINE COMEDY by ALAN DRAPER

Sonicbond Publishing [Publication date 29.02.24]

At end of the 1980s Neil Hannon formed his first line-up of The Divine Comedy. In 1989, he signed a deal with independent label, Setanta Records, which led to The Divine Comedy becoming the label’s most successful chart act of the 1990s.

Author Alan Draper (who also penned a book on Stackridge published by Sonicbond) examines the thirteen original studio albums released under The Divine Comedy banner between 1990 and 2022. The book also covers the two excellent, cricket themed albums released by the Duckworth Lewis Method (Neil Hannon teaming-up with Pugwash’s Thomas Walsh).

This reader/reviewer tended to agree with the author’s take on the Divine Comedy’s albums and songs contained within. To be fair, Neil Hannon/the Divine Comedy have never released a duff album!

The story of the band and their fluctuating line-ups is covered at the start of each chapter dealing with a particular album. The many bonus songs and those exclusive to the two best of collections to date, are also covered in detail.

It had me re-visiting a couple of Divine Comedy albums not heard in awhile, namely ‘Liberation’ and ‘Foreverland’, thanks to the author’s enthusiasm when detailing and describing the band’s music.

The book does lack any real detail of the two official live albums or the EPs. Completists will be a tad disappointed, however, for the casual and new fan this is a good place to start into the wonderful musical worlds created by Neil Hannon and the Divine Comedy.  ***1/2

EP review: REVENANT – What A Time To Be Alive

Facebook [Release date 10.05.24]

Revenant are a new band, although the band’s members have plenty of musical experience, with Sugarman Sam (vocals, guitars) and Matthew Hudson (guitars) both previously in the Dead Jackals. They are joined bassist Robin Nutley and drummer Carl D.

Five songs, clocking in at under twenty minutes, Revenant don’t mess about. ‘Coming Back To Life’ is a big beast of rocker, complete with a rather fine guitar solo and a chorus that you can hang your coat on. Next up ‘Draw The Lines’ keeps the pace going with a thunderous rhythmic beat. The guitar riff and solo aren’t too shabby either!

Now midway through the EP we have ‘The Healer’, a song that packs plenty in, both musically and lyrically, into its four minutes. With a song of this calibre on their debut EP you know the band has that certain “something” to make an impression on the music scene.

‘The Masquerade’ is a foot stomper, with a another fine guitar solo and Sugarman Sam has that perfect voice for southern, blues based rock. It is certainly tough out there for touring bands, however, with a slow burner like ‘Rolling On My Back’, Revenant have a real crowd pleaser. That’s what it is all about as you can have all the moody band photos, rave reviews, but you need the songs. It’s all about the music and Revenant have certainly got a strong musical mojo.

Revenant do southern based, blues hard rock and they do it well. If you love a bit of Blackberry Smoke, Bad Touch and Robert Jon & the Wreck you need the Revenant in your musical life. ****

Book review: On track…OASIS, NEIL YOUNG, AC/DC, PROCOL HARUM (every album, every song)

On track...Oasis by Andrew Rooney

Sonicbond Publishing www.sonicbondpublishing.com
[Publication dates 26.01.24*, 29.02.24**, 05.04.24***, 10.05.24****]

The wide spread of the On Track… series is confirmed by Paul Tornbohm’s dissection of Carpenters*. Surveying the pop duo’s output from 1969, Tornbohm approaches his task from the viewpoint of a songwriter and musician and this adds an additional dimension to his analysis. ****

Ben L.Connor believes that Jack White* may be the last great rock star, as music in the past couple of decades has been even more fragmented with the modern superstar derived from other genres.  His survey of White’ s music may therefore assume greater significance.

This book includes a section on the non-album tracks, B-sides, rarities but by the author’s own admission it isn’t a complete discography.  He does add information about White’s live recordings,  production work and video. ***1/2

Andrew Rooney’s survey of Oasis* condenses their sometimes volatile history into 130 pages. He reminds us that the band’s single B-sides were just as significant as album tracks. In that sense this is a comprehensive overview and will appeal to the newcomer as much as the hardened fan. Rooney himself is a self-confessed collector/obsessive when it comes to this band and that attention to detail is evident throughout. ****1/2

Neil Young 1963-70** by Opher Goodwin is a trawl through the formative period of the artist’s history, including his time with Buffalo Springfield and early solo work. Goodwin says “Neil is the ultimate innovator whether in the field of folk, blues, country, grunge, rock ‘n’ roll, R&B, punk or electronic…” This volume only touches on the start of Young’s biggest period of commercial success which culminated in 1972′s ‘Harvest’. ****

Chris Sutton’s work on AC/DC*** is enhanced by several new interviews including early manager Michael Browning and even some select comments from logo designer Gerard Huerta. Sutton takes us from the Young brothers’ first forays in 1973 to the more sophisticated sorties and the production gloss of Mutt Lange. It’s peppered with highs and lows, not least Bon Scott’s death in 1980 and firmly reflecting Malcolm Young’s pivotal role. ****1/2

INXS*** blend of rock, funk, pop and new wave is summarised in Manny Grillo’s book. He notes that the band is now better thought of and therefore his track breakdown assumes new relevance. For his narrative, he has drawn upon the official autobiography as well as various podcasts under the “INXS Access All Areas” moniker. ****

Procol Harum**** were one of the early bands to freely mix the classical with rock and Scott Meze takes us on their journey from their roots in the early 1960s as The Paramounts. Lyricist Keith Reid’s importance is emphasised (at least until the early 2000′s).

As Meze relates the band was very much centred on keyboard player Gary Brooker who pursued a solo career from the late 1970s. Procol Harum resurfaced in 1991 with ‘The Prodigal Stranger’. Robin Trower returned to the fold but not for live work which was carried out by Geoff Whitehorn who then appeared on the two remaining albums, in 2003 and 2017. The latter – ‘Novum’ – was a more accessible epitaph. Brooker died of cancer five years later. ****

Mention too of a new Sonicbond series ‘Rock Classics’ which takes the “on track” format and applies it to one album. This makes for an easy, if condensed, read (70-90 pages)and the books cover the albums’ various incarnations. There is (or will be) inevitable overlap with some of the “on track” tomes and they are even referenced in the reading list.

So far we’ve had Meat Loaf (‘Bat Out Of Hell’) by Geoffrey Feakes, The Stones ‘Let It Bleed’ by John Van der Kiste and Bob Dylan ‘Bringing It All Back Home’ by Opher Goodwin.

 MYRATH - Karma

MYRATH Karma (earMUSIC)

They have big songs and even bigger ideas on how to present them live and are not short on confidence in their collective abilities, and rightly so.

‘Karma’ will only serve to further the Myrath cause and is an epic rock record in every sense.  ****

SOUTH OF SALEM - Death Of The Party

SOUTH OF SALEM Death Of The Party (Spider Party Records)

Yes, there are a lot of bands occupying the heavy rock space seeking to gain a foothold but ultimately it’s the strength of the songs that win out. SoS have demonstrated with their second album that they understand the need to keep things short and to the point.  *****

MAGNUM - Here Comes The Rain

MAGNUM Here Comes The Rain (SPV)

As we have reported for previous albums, Magnum are unlikely to release a duffer and each release merely tops up an enviable back catalogue. And each album, for fans, is a matter of weighing up relativity if not similarity to predecessors.  The album does repay repeat listens, always a good sign of solid songwriting and musicianship.  ****

Album review: DEFECTS – Modern Error

DEFECTS - Modern Error

Mascot Records [Release date 24.05.24]

‘Modern Error’ is breathtakingly raw with emotion. Conceptually, it is a deeply cathartic album that acts as a vessel for singer Tony Maue to organise his thoughts on the trauma of being taken into care at a young age.

It’s his story, in his words. Threaded through the album are the experiences that Maue has been through, how the five members of the band are all connected, and why, at this moment, right now, is the right time for this band to exist. For themselves as much as anyone else.

From the offset this album was musically high in energy despite the lyrical tone of the album being traumatic thoughts. It was like being on the most exhilarating ride at a theme park but you just keep going and it just keeps getting better and better.

Through pain and anguish I have felt in my life I have to say my outlet is through music and this is exactly what was achieved. I could feel the passion and release of the inner demons from the vocal delivery. Many of the tracks resonated with experiences I have faced in my own life.

This album brought a showcase powerhouse of catchy choruses,  thrashing riffs and double drum pedal to the metal. Absolutely mild melting guitar solos and the guttural metal vocals only to expected from “defects”. I still don’t know how people do it! It takes a hell of a lot of talent to be able to deliver metal vocals like that. The vocal range is absolutely insane!

The lyrics were passionate and delivered in the very way expected.. with absolute unapologetic bad assery. This is exactly what I love about metal!

Although every track for me was outstanding, the stand outs  for me were ‘End of Days’ the lyrics “You think that we can accept our future drowned in regret, The lives of innocence Tormented by your sick ambitions” are ones that struck me to my very core.

‘Dream Awake’ not only was it musically and vocally my favourite track. But the lyrics “Am I dreaming Awake in this nightmare, Falling all over  again Am I dreaming. Oppression we all share Its just too loud to ignore Anymore” are not only ones that strongly resonate but it’s just beautifully written.

‘Recurring’ this was just an absolute chefs kiss! Absolutely everything I could ever want in a track. The guitar solo on this was insane!!! Don’t even get me started on the vocals. I cannot big up this track enough. Favourite of the whole album hands down no contest!!

‘Broken Bloodlines’ man oh man! I felt this lyrically in the very core of my soul. I have been in a situation where this song rings so true to these lyrics. This is why another reason why I love music. It strikes a cord with each and every one of us.

I could genuinely listen to this album on repeat, and as a matter of fact. That’s exactly what I intend to do!

Out of all the amazing albums I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing so far this year. This one is hands down my favourite so far and surpassed every expectation. Bravo guys! *****

Gig review: NORDA MULLEN- The Half Moon, Putney, London, 28 April 2024

NORDA MULLEN- The Half Moon, Putney, London, 28 April 2024

With heritage bands augmenting their touring line-ups with additional musicians, there is a category of highly talented musicians good enough to play with the best, yet virtually unknown to the wider world. One such is Norda Mullen, who for over 15 years after the retirement of the late Ray Thomas, toured the world with the Moody Blues as a flautist and multi-instrumentalist.

Raised in the South, then domiciled in California, the American has been a resident of Richmond upon Thames for many years now, and most of her infrequent live shows have been local affairs down the road (or river!) at the Half Moon. Many of the audience- which also included some Moodies family and crew- were from her local South-West London community. Indeed- full disclosure- the reason this show came to my notice was through a wine group of American expats in the area that my partner belongs to.

NORDA MULLEN- The Half Moon, Putney, London, 28 April 2024

Indeed, adding to the sense of being at a private gathering, the support came from Quinny and Company, a folky 4 piece fronted by a father and daughter combination in Jim- another American and neighbour of Norda’s- and Sarah Bernard, who had flown in from the States, supported by a bassist and cajon player. Sarah sang lead- and played ukulele!- on opener ‘Drifting’, but Jim sang and played harmonica on the Neil Young-esque ‘Under the Willow’ and on ‘Dreams’ and ‘Hold Me Tight’ the two harmonised beautifully. ‘Suzy and Alexander’ had a rockier feel and a very enjoyable set concluded- appropriately enough with the Amy Winehouse biopic big news right now-  with Sarah’s take on The Zutons’ ‘Valerie’.

Compared to what for so many years was her day job, Norda Mullen faced a fresh challenge as lead singer and frontwoman, and had assembled a seven piece band. Opening with ‘yeah yeah’ harmonies, most recent single ‘Down To The River’ was a pleasant and well-constructed opener, enlivened when she picked up her flute half way through for a solo.

NORDA MULLEN- The Half Moon, Putney, London, 28 April 2024

The first of many anecdotes about her life and songwriting inspirations led into a cover of ‘California Dreaming’ then ‘I Like It’ saw her playing another refreshingly different instrument in a melodica. ‘Steal My Thunder’, with a lengthy, almost proggy, instrumental, was edgier, yet- courtesy of sister and backing singer Christie- featured a totally un rock’n’roll instrument, the xylophone. ‘It’s OK’ saw Norda’s instrumental prowess extend to both harmonica and recorder.

A recurring theme of the night was to cover songs by women who had inspired her, and a version of the Pretenders’ ‘Back On The Chain Gang’ felt very authentic. Among the others, she showed a bluesier side I think she might have developed further on Michelle Shocked’s ‘Love Is a Train’ and took over keyboards for Annie Lennox’s ‘The Gift’.

NORDA MULLEN- The Half Moon, Putney, London, 28 April 2024

The celtic-tinged ‘Give it Up’ featured a military style drum pattern from Chris Bailey not unlike Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk’ while ‘Strange Imagination’, sung by tousle-haired guitarist Noris Schek, featured Norda’s recorder and some great work from the rhythm section of Chris and bassist Richard Cartwright.

The majority of the songs were her own originals including ‘Live for Today’ and ‘Pray For You’, which I could have easily imagined on a Radio 2 playlist. Perhaps surprisingly there was just one Moody Blues song, but it was a goodie, a beautiful, flute-led  instrumental version of ‘Nights In White Satin’ during which you could have heard a pin drop from an appreciative crowd.

NORDA MULLEN- The Half Moon, Putney, London, 28 April 2024

Sadly few rock songs prominently feature this most mellifluous and beautiful of instruments, but one such of course is Focus’ ‘Hocus Pocus’, which proved very lively as guitarists Noris and Alan Wishart rocked out, while Norda’s flute playing covered both the original flute parts and, wisely, Thijs Van Leer’s yodelling lines. On a cover of Eddi Reader and Fairground Attraction’s ‘Find My Love’, Richard switched to mandolin, and the sibling harmonies were beautiful, while ‘Home’ had a strong Motown inspiration.

She closed with another rock classic which prominently features flute in Canned Heat’s ‘Going Up the Country’. She’d already played for an hour and a half but after a speech of thanks manager, songwriter and husband Kelvin Cheatle, needed little persuading to join the band for a reprise of ‘Down to the River’.

NORDA MULLEN- The Half Moon, Putney, London, 28 April 2024

I did not really know what to expect before the gig, but was hugely impressed by the sheer variety of material, ranging from pleasant folk pop originals to new takes on other people’s songs, given a fresh dimension by her playing instruments less often heard in a rock context.  I left with the conclusion was that Norda Mullen is a talented and personable live act who I hope a wider clientele can get to experience.

Gig review: SARI SCHORR- The Grace, London, 27 April 2024

SARI SCHORR- The Grace, London, 27 April 2024

It’s a mark of the ever growing respect East Coast powerhouse singer Sari Schorr is held in the blues world that the very best have been queuing up to collaborate with her, most recently Robin Trower joining forces on last year’s ‘Joyful Sky’ album. Given the boost to her profile I was rather disappointed this show, originally billed for the Garage, was moved to its much smaller and more basic upstairs sister venue The Grace, which was packed to the gills.

There was also the bonus of a set of generous length from another respected figure, Matt Pearce, veteran of countless original and tribute bands, now with his own act The Mutiny. Refreshingly they draw on a much broader palette than the over-exposed blues rock sound with big dollops of soul and RnB thrown into the melting pot.

SARI SCHORR- The Grace, London, 27 April 2024

Theirs is a full sound including female backing vocals, keyboards and the sax of Pete Back,  which was notably prominent when trading lines with Matt’s always fluid guitar work on the insistent melodies of opener ‘Got A Thing Going On’. In a set drawing heavily on recently released second album ‘The Soul Food Store’, the tempo of the songs were rather too similar for a while, but ‘Bring It All To Me’ stood out- slower and soulful, the sound building in increasingly rich fashion.

Matt introduced ‘From Here To The Moon’ as an old-school boogie, while in contrast the seventies style synths on ‘A Better Way’ gave it an old-school funk feel and ‘King of the World’ was equally impressive.

SARI SCHORR- The Grace, London, 27 April 2024

The musicianship was uniformly excellent, my only slight gripe- as a newcomer to most of the songs- being the difficulty in making out the lyrics in Matt’s vocals which felt a little indistinct in places. ‘Scarecrowing’, from his first album, was more straight ahead blues rock giving him more scope to shine on guitar, then they justified one of those overplayed covers in ‘Oh Well’ by really bending it to their trademark sound. All in all I was very impressed.

This was a very different Sari Schorr set from previous shows I’d seen for a number of reasons. First of all, for this tour there was no keyboard player, which made for a more raw and basic sound, albeit with fewer subtle embellishments. Secondly, it was a rare, maybe even one-off, chance to hear those songs from ‘Joyful Sky’. Openers ‘The Circle is Complete’ and ‘The Distance’ segued into one another and long-time guitarist Ash Wilson successfully imitated the inimitable Trower style on his Stratocaster with plentiful use of the wah-wah pedal. After the dreamy title track, ‘Peace of Mind’ completed a quartet of numbers to open the set.

SARI SCHORR- The Grace, London, 27 April 2024

Then in another difference  she debuted a new song in ‘Hometown Girl’, which was in a more straight ahead rock mould with a searing solo to match from Ash. After paying tribute to another great in Mike Vernon who had kickstarted her career, some old favourites from her first album included ‘Ain’t Got No Money’ with another lengthy solo from Ash  and the out-and-out blues of ‘Demolition Man’. She had a unique vocal style I had not fully realised before, tightening her facial muscles almost in a rictus grin, controlling those rich sounds which come from deep in her throat.

She also has a very friendly and confessional style, taking the audience into her confidence, notably in introducing very personal and more reflective songs like ‘Ordinary Life’, to which her new band gave a jazzy arrangement, and ‘Beautiful’. ‘Damn the Reason’ built to a massive chorus with good backing vocal support while she let us in on the secret that ‘Aunt Hazel’, a bluesy rocker with a catchy ‘I’m in trouble refrain’ was New York slang for heroin.

SARI SCHORR- The Grace, London, 27 April 2024

She debuted another new song in ‘Highway 69- I got the impression she was testing it before deciding whether it should be on an album, and as an impressively raunchy rocker my answer would be an emphatic yes. Indeed a similar pace was maintained with ‘Valentina’ and Maybe I’m Fooling’ both kicking up a storm to end the main set.

The encore saw a different side of her with her ingenious re-arrangement of LeadBelly (and Ram Jam’s) ‘Black Betty, full of twists and turns. At this point what I assumed was a hard 10 o’clock curfew loomed. However not only did the band carry on, but another blues standard in ‘I Just Want To Make Love To You’, again given a contemporary re-working, turned into a lengthy jam, indeed overly so, with both Ash and bassist Chris Cliff given solo slots, Chris continuing his with drummer Harry Bent. Even then there was a third cover, in ‘Rock and Roll’, overplayed to the point of cliché, but one Sari attacked with aplomb.

SARI SCHORR- The Grace, London, 27 April 2024

In truth this was far from my favourite gig of hers: the middle section was outstanding but I found the Trower-Schorr material rather dry, and the covers seemed excessive. Nevertheless the two new songs were among further proof that Sari Schorr is one of blues rock’s most talented and engaging vocal treasures.

Album review: JACK BADCOCK – Cosmography

JACK BADCOCK - Cosmography

www.jackbadcock.com [Release date 03.05.24]

Jack Badcock is best known as frontman and founding member of Dallahan. After releasing ‘The Driftwood Project’ EP in 2021 we now arrive in 2024 and Jack Badcock releases his first solo album.

Jack plays guitar, piano and bass on the album, being joined by notable guest musicians including Siobhan Miller, Louis Abbott (Admiral Fallow) and Dallahan bandmate Andrew Waite.

Opening with the three part, eight minute epic that is ‘Life In Three Dimensions’, the listener know they are in for an album that both entertains and makes you think. Jack’s singing is easy on the ear and his piano playing adds extra pizazz to the music.

On the bluesy, jazzy ‘The Ghost of Leland Birch’ Jack Badcock recalls the 70′s singer songwriting heyday of Chris de Burgh. It is the storytelling through music that makes this one, and indeed the whole album, a delight.

Other highlights include ‘The English Samurai’, based on the true story of William Adams, the first Englishman to reach Japan and another jazz flavoured song, ‘Entropy’.

Then we have the album’s pinnacle in ‘How To Raise A Child’. Written during lockdown, the lyric pulls no punches condemning the incarceration of children worldwide. The choral outro of the chorus line – ‘Make our world a home, raise them as your own’ – highlights perfectly the power of music.

An album of musical beauty from the talented Jack Badcock. ****

Gig review: WALTER TROUT – The Alhambra Theater, Paris, 30 April 2024

Walter Trout & PF at Alhambra Paris

Walter Trout in Paris is an opportunity not to be missed and so it proves as Walter and his road tested band bring a capacity seated audience to its feet

On a personal note it’s 35 years since I first approached him about touring the UK in his own right, and tonight is a potent reminder of what initially drew me to his impassioned rock blues.

All these years later he has little to prove, as he’s cemented his own legacy from being an acclaimed sideman with the likes of John Lee Hooker, Canned Heat and John Mayall Blues Breakers, to being an internationally recognised solo artist with a startling 31 solo albums and counting.

It’s also ten years since he survived a near death experience, which gives his songs real substance and infuses his performance with an abundance of passion.

He’s a supreme guitarist with a locker full of well crafted songs spanning rock, blues, boogie, and ballads with meaningful personal narratives.

Then there’s his connection with his worldwide fans, as evidenced tonight by his ability to charm an urbane Parisian crowd in the elegant Alhambra Theater.

He takes centre stage, with outstretched arms in a welcoming pose, and quickly rides rough shot over any potential linguistic problems with the opening swagger of ‘I Can Tell’, his trademark opening power shuffle.

He retains an ability to connect with people, on the heartfelt ‘Courage In The Dark’, as he delivers the lyrics almost as a sermon within a sultry groove:

All we can do is hope and pray for just a single ray of light And the way to light a candle, You know it only takes a spark And we all need a little courage in the dark.”

He clearly knows the value of dynamics switching from the deepest groove to the counted-in, metaphorically rich and riff driven “Wanna Dance”, which leads to a mix of clapping and fist pumping.

Trout then finds the perfect balance on the melodically uplifting sweep of ‘Ride’ and he ambitiously duets with bassist Jon Avila on ‘Broken’, the title track of his new album.  Originally co-sung by Beth Hart,  it comes with a significant explanatory intro.

‘Bleed’ is similarly introduced by a lighting romp through his own boogie credits. And from this point onwards he’s flying, as he ushers in the presence of recent band addition Brett Smith-Daniel.

While Brett provides a gentle acoustic wash on ‘Courage In The Dark’, he’s given full reign to shred on ‘We’re All In This Together’.

The song illustrates Trout’s ability to pull together musical jigsaw pieces, by incorporating the full talents of his road tested band members on an evolving set of songs.

Keyboard player Roland Bakker leads a stripped down bluesy showcase which finds Trout on vocals alone. And when he finally does join on guitar he shows us an inherent ability to build a song from the ground up.

And it’s back to flat out rocking on ‘I’ve Had Enough’, on which John Avila again impresses with his vocal versatility, filling in for album guest Dee Snider on a pile driver of a track, as Michael Leasure provides unrelenting drive.

The on stage energy levels frequently belies Trout’s septuagenarian status and medical history. Then again, it’s the fact he’s able to bring his experience to bear on both his songs and stage craft that marks him out as special and  leaves us into no doubt as to his irrepressible passion for what he does.

Tonight he and his band give everything they’ve got, and he climaxes the set by generously giving his band members the spotlight on Floyd Lee’s ‘Red Sun.’

Bakker tears into his Hammond, and there’s an almost free jazz moment as Avila’s staccato bass notes are underpinned by Leasure’s subtle phrasing

Leasure’s subsequent solo masters the art of appearing to be laid back while delivering intensity, with everything from paradiddles and press rolls, to changing the pitch of his snare drum with his elbow and a full blown 4 way coordinated rhythm pattern.

Trout then seizes the moment to lead the band intro a ripping version of Don Nix’s ‘Going Down’, complete with Avila on blood curdling falsetto, by which time the whole theatre is on its feet roaring him on to a well earned triumph.

Album review: SHADES OF PLATO – Blackout

SHADES OF PLATO - Blackout

Platonic Arrangements [Release date 20.06.24] shadesofplato1.bandcamp.com/

Any album with a song title ‘Bacteria With Shoes’ demands attention. And you’ll find it on the third album from gothic rockers Shades Of Plato. By their own admission this album predicts a post-pandemic apocalypse “a gothic treatise on mortality and the decline of civilisation”.

It’s a strangely enticing mixture of flute driven riffs (courtesy of one ‘Ol Dirty) and new wave pace. In a weird way, it reminded me of a band called Black Widow. I assume that Shades Of Plato refrain from sacrificing a nude virgin on stage as did that band.

In a sense ‘Blackout’ is out of its time and of its time. The jaunty blasts of punk prog collectively evoke bands like Hawkwind and The Stranglers. The pace seldom slackens. It’s a nice package too with thoughtful lyrics that also demand attention.

The extra instrumental tagged on surreptitiously at the end (of the limited CD), and the band photos, suggest that Shades Of Plato have a theatrical bent waiting to be unleashed on a stage near you. Nude virgins anyone?  ***1/2

Album review: VARIOUS – Reimagining The Court Of The Crimson King

VARIOUS - Reimagining The Court Of The Crimson King

Purple Pyramid Records [Release date 19.04.24]

King Crimson’s 1969 album is one of the most significant and influential prog albums and here gets a fresh coat of paint courtesy of a stellar gathering of prog and fusion A listers. And, yes, Mel Collins is in the building! (He replaced Ian McDonald for the band’s follow-up).

In truth this reworking adds nothing to the original, it follows closely the Crimson template.  It does however show inveterate progsters having a good blast.

Todd Rundgren shares vocals on ’21st Century Schizoid Man’ with Arthur Brown and there are two bonus versions on the CD including an “America” (The Nice) mash-up and an instrumental which also feature Ian Paice.

Jakko M. Jaksyk makes a good job of ‘Talk To The Wind’ but then he is part of the current Crimson line-up. Alan Davey and Paul Rudolph feature on ‘Epitaph’ with the late Nik Turner whilst Joe Lynn Turner sings on ‘Moonchild’ with Marty Friedman on guitar. James LaBrie fronts ‘The Court Of The Crimson King’ with Steve Hillage on guitar.

I’m not sure what added value this collection brings to the table other than novelty. Perhaps it will prompt the listener to reach for the original?  ***

EP review: LITTLE FIREWORKS – Where Did the Light Go

LITTLE FIREWORKS - Where Did the Light Go

Instagram [Release date 12.04.24]

Little Fireworks are Scott Viney & Pierce Kavanagh, two lifelong friends from London who have been writing music together for over 7 years, in different projects, across various roles. Like many bands, the 2020 pandemic played a huge part in the demise of their previous project. Pierce went on as a solo artist under the name “kav.” whilst Scott focused his efforts on forging a career as a full-time session musician. Whilst their hiatus from one another was briefer than most, the pair inevitably missed making music together. Pierce wanted to continue project ‘kav’ as a band, and invited Scott in on the journey. Enter Little Fireworks: a new musical tour de force.

“Brother” although musically this track sounds uplifting. The track showcases very deep and powerful lyrics. What I took away from this track was that we need to check in on our friends and be there for them if they need you. Don’t ignore the signs of them reaching out as it may be a lot deeper than just wanting to hang out.

“Like Ghosts” this track was my favourite. Absolutely beautiful musically. The slow build to a powerful chorus that lyrically resonated so much with me.

Someone who you were so close with then becoming a stranger is never easy. Navigation of emotions were effortlessly displayed in this. Bravo!

“Vicious Tongue” I feel like this is almost a story unfolding. The previous track being not speaking to someone you were close with (maybe a lover) and this track is speaking about not being able to emotionally handle them being gone, even though their words were cruel, you cant bear the thought of them moving on.

Very clever placement of both tracks on the EP.

“My Best” this closing track! What a way to end an EP. Musically absolutely stellar. Again lyrically emotionally charged.

“Who are you, who are we, who am I?” Questions we often may ask ourselves, and How we choose to navigate through that and the mix of emotions we face.

This EP was raw and emotive , beautifully encapsulated vocally, lyrically and melodically. This is art in its purest form. The musical and songwriting talent here is undeniable.

I’m looking forward to seeing what is next brought to the table. ****

Scott: To be really honest, when we were thinking about a name, Kav just came to me and said “what about Little Fireworks?” and I immediately said “yep that’s it.” It sounded like “us” straight away.

Which artists (musical and otherwise) influence your sound?

Scott: We’re massive fans of Biffy Clyro, Frightened Rabbit and The National so I guess those guys somewhat bleed into our sound (ish).

How would you describe your music?

Kav: We go big when we go big; we go soft when we go soft

Your EP ‘Where Did The Light Go’ is out now. Can you give us a bit of a ‘track by track’ description of each song?

Brother – our shortest, sharpest and fastest to date. Our little pop pop banger.

Vicious Tongue – We were stuck in an apartment in Brooklyn. It was pouring with rain outside. Vicious Tongue was born.

Like Ghosts – The lead single from the EP. It represents Little Fireworks down to a tee. Soft, low-fi verses paired with big, anthemic choruses.

My Best – Old but gold. Stood the test of time. Good fun to play live too.

Your Ep launch was a day before EP release on April 11th – we’re sorry we couldn’t make it! How did it go?

Scott: It was so good. We sold it out as well which felt great.

Kav: Yeah it felt like a real pivotal moment for us as a band. A night to remember for sure.

Tell us a bit about what your live show is like

Scott: Lively and loud. You don’t want to miss it.

What is the music scene like where you’re based in London? Where would you take us for a rocking night out?

Kav: Loads of venues we’re loving at the moment: The Victoria in Dalston, The Windmill in Brixton, Strongroom in Shoreditch.

What has the rest of 2024 have in store for you?

More releases, more live shows, more taking on the world.

Album review : FRANCIS ROSSI & HANNAH RICKARD – We Talk Too Much (2024 vinyl version with bonus track)

earMUSIC [Release date : 03.05.24]

2014’s Aquostic (Stripped Bare) was Status Quo’s first full blown tilt at “reimagining” older material in an acoustic set up. It was a big success, commercially and critically.

It led to this collaboration between Francis Rossi and Hannah Rickard (she provided violin and backing vocals on Aquostic), produced and arranged in much the same manner, first released in 2019 in CD form.

This timely vinyl version has been cut from the original analogue masters. For many, the vintage charm of vinyl adds a seductive sheen to the music. And the bonus track on this version, ‘Broken Memory’ provides one of those puzzling “why was this left off the CD?” moments.

Rickard is probably best known for her band Hannah Rickard and The Relatives, and while we might think of her as a rock singer, her intonation and articulation makes her a formidable country/folk/pop talent too.

Her duets with Rossi bring a beguiling sensitivity and emotion to these remarkably lean and confident folk/country styled recordings. The material – largely introspective – may lack originality, but thats not the point here, the songs have huge heart and soul, and quite deliberately, a distinctly familiar air.

You can’t help but be impressed with the imaginative cross wiring going on the in the songwriting – ‘But I Just Said Goodbye’s distinctive melody and tone owe a lot to country classic “The Wild Side Of Life” – a song covered by Quo in the seventies. And many tracks, most especially ‘I’ll Take You Home’ and ‘Heartbreaker’ swell with quiet yearning and melodic warmth.

The title track is a Rossi/Bob Young co-write, and has a bit more steel in its spine… you can hear them referencing Jeff Lynne in the backing vocals and Cheap Trick in the booming, powerpop guitar fills. It comes second only to the hooky, wordy ‘Oughta Know By Now’, the most Quo of any of these tracks.

The other musical strand in play here is Southern soul, and on the hymn like ‘Waiting For Jesus’ and the churchy, gospel tinged ‘Good Times Bad Times’, it’s hard to shake the notion that it’s really Rickard’s show. It strikes you that she, perhaps more so than Rossi, has an intuitive feel for these disparate musical idioms, and that she could take a number of directions from here.

Meantime, We Talk Too Much‘s enormously enjoyable collection of catchy hooks and irresistibly singalong choruses, supported by a rich weave of acoustic instrumentation, will do just fine. ****1/2
