Gig review: MARTIN TURNER – 100 Club, London, 3 October 2024

MARTIN TURNER- 100 Club, London, 3 October 2024

2024 has seen Wishbone Ash founder member Martin Turner tour a set based around the Live Dates Volume Two album: perhaps less heralded than its predecessor, this 1980 release shows the ‘Mark 2’ phase of the band at their finest (and is also being toured this autumn by the current Wishbone Ash line up).

Since I caught that start of the tour at the Eel Pie Club in Twickenham, his band have enjoyed a rare Stateside tour (alongside Asia and Curved Air) but now they were back in familiar haunts of what seems to be their regular venue for London shows- though I was surprised the crowd seemed noticeably down on previous visits.

MARTIN TURNER- 100 Club, London, 3 October 2024

After coming on stage in low key fashion and a vaguely eastern sounding intro, they opened instead with the familiar comforts of ‘The King Will Come’ with all the Wishbone trademarks- the twin guitars of Misha Nikolic and Danny Willson, the latter taking the solo with foot on the wah-wah  pedal in between backing Martin on vocal harmonies, while the man himself improvised a mid-song solo showing how his melodic bass lines further enriched their sound.

Moving on to the Live Dates 2 theme for the majority of the set without overtly plugging the fact, he was startlingly self deprecating- for the first, but not the last time- saying he always renamed ‘Helpless’ as ‘Hopeless’. This may reflect the fact it was a rare song given to the band by the label rather than written by them but to me it was a rare chance to hear with those classic twin leads and a fine solo from Danny.
MARTIN TURNER- 100 Club, London, 3 October 2024

Martin then paid the first of two tributes to his brother who had recently been laid to rest in their native Devon, prior to ‘Lady Jay’, based on a West Country legend and perhaps the song closest to ‘Argus’s spirit of English folk rock as well as successfully showing off drummer Sonny Flint’s ability to play with the subtlety requirement to do these songs justice.

The rest of the first half of the set was taken from that album, beginning with some great musicianship from all band members in the instrumental ‘FUBB’. Both ‘Persephone’, with lyrical solos from both guitarists and ‘Lorelei’ showed off the languid, more Americanised feel of that era of Wishbone, before ‘Runaway’ rocked things back up and there was a rare chance to hear an underappreciated epic in ‘Way Of the World’ with more sterling lead guitar work in the 2nd half of the song. Martin’s voice was full of character and nuance throughout even if on the odd song there were signs of wear and tear, entirely natural for a man serenaded during the show for his recent 77th birthday.

MARTIN TURNER- 100 Club, London, 3 October 2024

As usual it was a set of two halves, and ‘Time Was’ kicked things off in the ‘Live Dates 2’ version, skipping the quiet intro to go to the second phase with more outstanding soloing from Danny. In contrast, the lazy, summery feel of the twin guitars of ‘In All Of My Dreams (Your Rescue Me)’ had Martin likening them to lying in a warm bath  and he warned people not to fall asleep!

Yet more self deprecation, which had earlier included raising an eyebrow at the price of the coffee table book on sale, followed as he said he still had no idea what Laurie Wisefield meant when he wrote ‘Goodbye Baby Hello Friend’. Danny did a very good interpretation of the latter’s vocals and guitar solo, though it was a reminder this vain attempt at a soft rock hit single was and remains totally un-Wishbone in style. Doing overtime, he also excelled with his singing and slide guitar playing on ‘Rock and Roll Widow’.

MARTIN TURNER- 100 Club, London, 3 October 2024

Also from ‘Wishbone Four’ the middle of ‘Doctor’ saw the two guitarists move in to pull poses together as they reeled off those solos in harmony, and what seemed like a very short second set ended with Martin describing how he had to fight to get ‘Blowin Free’ onto ‘Argus’, a lively rendition accompanied by a very lusty ‘1-2-3-4’ from the crowd as the bridge gave way to the solo.

There was plenty of time for encores and Martin dedicated to the people of Ukraine and the Middle East the pairing of ‘Warrior’ with Misha shining on guitar, segueing into ‘Throw Down The Sword’ with its twin guitar climax. Classics for sure, but given the theme of the tour I would have preferred ‘Living Proof’ as the most obvious stand out from  ‘Live Dates 2’ and it seems the ‘Argus’ material is a comfort blanket the band and maybe their audience finds hard to let go of.

MARTIN TURNER- 100 Club, London, 3 October 2024

They then slipped in an unscheduled extra song in ‘Blind Eye’ where the guitar harmonies and synchronised moves were a warm up for more of the same during set closer ‘Jailbait’, the jam accompanied by band intros and a fresh and funny joke from Martin. Even if the Live Dates 2 template was not followed rigorously, it was once again a set that proved the enduring legacy Martin Turner was such a key part of, but also how he and his band can interpret it with skill and added humour to make for a heartwarming night out.

Album review: CLEANBREAK – We Are The Fire

Frontiers [Release date : 11.10.24]

We Are The Fire is the second album from Cleanbreak, Mike (Riot/Riot V) Flyntz and Frontiers’ wunderkind, James Durbin.

While Mark Reale and Rhett Forester were getting all the headlines with Riot and Riot V, Flyntz was the band’s rock solid, back to the wall rhythm guitarist. An anchor for the band’s heavy / power metal sound.

On Cleanbreak’s debut, Coming Home (2022), Stryper’s rhythm section was on board, Perry Richardson and Robert Sweet. This time it’s Alessandro Del Vecchio (now on the other side of a serious health problem) on bass and keys, and Nicholas Pappapico, from Robin McAuley’s band, on the drums.

It’s a thin line, admittedly, but once you get past the opening track, Cleanbreak’s second album is more hard rock than heavy metal. ‘Unbreakable’ is the perfect example. Flyntz rations his riffing to minimalist strokes, leaving most of the heavy lifting to Durbin’s double tracked vocals.

That opener – ‘A Warrior’s Anthem’ – enjoys powerful, honest, hand on heart emoting from Durbin. The song, lyrically, is as poetic as hard rock or heavy metal ever gets. Flyntz’s motorised riffs do the driving.

The albums dips slightly in the middle section. Despite its galloping guitars and steely, pounding rhythms, ‘Deal With Yourself’ is lyrically light. The words of love lost, and the accusations that follow, seem content to recycle yesterday’s emotions.

That said, the track is bookended by two of the album’s stronger songs. Del Vecchio’s keys, doubling as a string section, dramatise ‘Breathless’ as the song builds nicely to a cool, minor key chorus.

Another fine solo from Flyntz. Never too flamboyant, never too restrained, always calibrated just right for each specific song.

On ‘Love Again’ this time, Del Vecchio’s keyboard artistry adds valuable light and shade as a surging melody, carefully guided by Durbin’s sky scraping vocal, builds to a climactic chorus. This song is as close at it gets to the mainstream, and Durbin’s clearly got more to offer. A pointer to the future perhaps.

Cool album. ***1/2

Album review: SMASH ATOMS

Smash Atoms

M-Theory Audio [Release date 11.10.24]

This year SMASH ATOMS have been bubbling under, mainly from the overwhelming and surprising response the Swedish quartet have received from commercial/active rock radio.

Servicing their first single/video “Down” inspired a dozen stations to immediately add the song. That organic reception encouraged us to dig in and doubling the number of stations playing the song.

Since #grungeisback has been a rallying cry and “Down” led programmers and fans to check out follow-up “Into the Light” and the big one pre-album release “Bring Down the River” that is being set at this time of writing for a release primed in time for this anticipated debut effort.

SMASH ATOMS’ story actually originates back to 2012 when they formed, releasing one smashing demo and playing a handful of magical shows before U.S.-born singer Glen Gilbert stepped out and the remaining trio changed their name to The Torch with guitarist Martin Soderqvist also handling vocals.

The Torch recorded two albums, gaining national Swedish radio play and touring all over places like Scandinavia, Germany and Italy. But two years ago, Glen (The Story Behind, Hide the Knives) and the guys reconnected and decided to revert back to their former incarnation and give SMASH ATOMS another chance and here we are. Already confirming European festivals, a major European support tour and management discussions these guys are shining brightly and are deserving of greater attention.

I was looking forward to getting stuck into this album. So this is my immediate thoughts as the album was playing.

Track 1. “Bring the river” Great opening track which immediately grabbed my attention and kept me fully engaged. It made me eager to hear what else was in store. “Bring the river down, Open the floodgates and let it all out”.

Gritty and strong gravelly vocals. Guitar slow and heavy. Slick, clear and concise.

2: “Black cloud” this was angsty and showed guts. I loved how there was a flourish with the guitar in the background giving an almost psychedelic undertone to the track. Everything was thrashing and this track didn’t hold back.

3: ”Buried under the open sky” the lyrics  “I have no shame, Count every moment till the end, this day will never come again” were empowering and clearly written with raw passion.

This track although giving the grit you would expect. It felt softer. The vocals were almost haunting. With the accompanying keys it added depth of sound making for a truly atmospherically experience in sound.

4: “Dead season” showcased the bass work at its finest. God this was so buttery smooth. “Another day another fight” we all have been through days where things seem too much and are mounting. It’s how we overcome our obstacles that define us.

Again strong and powerful. This track I really feel honed in on the craftsmanship of the each member of the band and how everything is beautifully blended to perfection.

5: “Down” the pace well and truly picked up with this. Packed with 90s grunge essence that would give nirvana a run for their money. I can see this being a live show firm favourite. It was so catchy.

The drum work was incredible. The pace ebbed and flowed and it was a true adrenaline rush.

6: “End Of The Road” the licks with the guitar work was so impressive on this. Slower paced than the previous track but I feel this is needed halfway through an album.

Halfway through this track however I felt it was building to a truly expressive and explosive end. Filled with a  face melting guitar solo.

7: “Into The Light” the pace was picked up in this half of the album. Can see this one being another firm favourite amongst fans. Another great solo from the guitar with the vocal, bass and drum work beautifully blending.

8: “Living A Lie” slower paced but still packing the punch and the chorus was very catchy. The middle instrumental gave the track depth and made it a stand out leading to an outstanding finish.

9: “Pretend” pace picking up again the riffs were absolutely electric. Would love to see this track played live.

10: “Sunshine” fitting title for this track. It gave me the vibe of a summer stroll with this blasting in my headphones. Very chilled yet very reflective in lyrical content.

11: “The Mountain” Closing track of the album. Sounded very haunting. The build-up of the song was electric and so powerful and made for a show stopping end to a killer album.

“Scream for existence” well well well.

What an album. This made me feel so nostalgic and Reminded me of being a teen in my full grunge phase.

The album oozes passion in terms of lyrical composition. Themes of life struggle being at the forefront. Something almost everyone can relate to in one way or another. I do love when a band takes struggle and pain and turns it into something so beautiful and bad ass and this is exactly what “smash atoms” have done.

Can concur they are deserving of greater attention. I can see these guys being big in the underground rock scene and more and more in people getting to know this band. As a first time listener I wasn’t disappointed.

There were ebbs and flows throughout the album, vocal and musical flair with heavy nods to the 90s but still maintaining the bands own individuality and unique sound.

I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next for “smash atoms” as this was certainly smashed out of the park. ****

Album review : THUNDER – The Complete EMI Recordings 1989-95 (7 CD boxset)

Cherry Red [Release date 27.08.24]

Thunder rose from the ashes of Terraplane, a two album English band who never escaped from label interference.

Singer Danny Bowes and guitarist, Luke Morley, along with Gary “Harry” James, Ben Matthews and Mark “Snake” Luckhurst, went on to form Thunder.

In 1990, this new band was easy to underestimate on first impressions. For those expecting a UK facsimile of American AOR, their debut album, Backstreet Symphony was something of a let down, a disappointment.

Half a dozen plays later you realised that this was a band with its eye on the ball, moreso than any other Brit band in the bluesy, melodic hard rock genre.

The band’s first 3 studio albums are this 7 CD boxset’s core content.

CD1 : Backstreet Symphony (studio album 1990)
CD2 : Backstreet Symphony – Studio and live B-sides
CD3 : Live At Donington (1990)
CD4 : Laughing On Judgement Day (studio album 1992)
CD5 : Laughing On Judgement Day – Bonus tracks and B-sides
CD6 : Behind Closed Doors (studio album 1995)
CD7 : Behind Closed Doors – Bonus tracks, Studio and live

Backstreet Symphony captured the band’s transition from Terraplane’s undistinguished rock to the sound we know today as classic rock, tuned to the wavelength of chart storming British bands like Bad Company and Whitesnake.

The orchestrated energy that the band transmitted on the live circuit easily transferred  to the recording studio.

The singles, the hooky arena rock of ‘Dirty Love’ and the archetypal power ballad, ‘Love Walked In’, charted on both sides of the Atlantic.

Three more singles from Backstreet Symphony made the UK Top Forty.

The anglicised delta blues of ‘Until The Night Is Through’ (Dance Dance Dance), a non album single B-side, and the whole Live At The Town And Country Club are the CD2 highlights.

The sheer enthusiasm that energised the debut is more focused on the follow up, Laughing On Judgement Day.

The recording is charged with exciting, electrifying pieces of music, like the brass on ‘Everybody Wants Her’, and the mournful harmonica on the ultimately uplifting ballad, ‘A Better Man’. Both as good as it gets.

The album consolidated the band’s UK popularity without moving them forward. It was 1991, and the Seattle vanguard had established a foothold in most countries.

CD5 is jampacked with bonus tracks, B-sides, acoustic versions, demos and live tracks.

And in common with the live material that fleshes out the band’s sound across this boxset, Live At Donington (CD3) confirms what we already know.

The band’s third and last album on the EMI label, The Thrill of It All, opened with ‘A Moth To A Flame’. This was 1995. As the song title alludes, the charred remains of post-seventies rock bands were thick on the ground. Grunge had invaded and occupied most rock’n’roll territories.

Yet still, Thunder flew the flag, still fighting… down tuned toes in the water, the music heavier, harder, denser.

Had this been a new band, likely it would have enjoyed critical recognition. But it wasn’t, it was Thunder.

The title track, the funky, clanging ‘River Of Pain’, and the magnificent ‘Castles in The Sand’ are heavily metalised rock, end of relationship songs, as relevant to a moment in the rock’n’roll timeline as they are to the songwriter’s personal life.

As a definitive snapshot of Thunder’s first six years in the public eye, this boxset will take some beating. ****

Gig review: VINCENT FLATTS FINAL DRIVE – Slim Jim’s Liquor Store, Islington, London 4 October 2024

Steve Burton - Vincent Flatts

Tonight is the sort of gig that restates the true staples of rock and roll, namely the holy trinity of a great band, a welcoming venue and receptive audience.

Birmingham’s Vincent Flatts Final Drive is the kind kick ass band with a brilliant front man Steve “Bertie” Burton, who can start a party at any time, any place, anywhere.

And Slim Jim’s Liquor Store provides the colourfully designed, old school biker bar in the heart of the yuppy stronghold of Islington, with a spirited (pun intended) cross generational audience to light the tinder box of rip roaring night of Southern tinged rock.

Burton won’t thank me for dwelling on the fact that it’s a startling 44 years since he initial broke through on to the rock circuit with the AC / DC linked Starfighters.

Since then,  he’s led several versions of Vincent Flatts Final, and while the twin imperatives of biker culture and Southern fried boogie have never been too far removed from the band’s essential core, the current version of Flatts (already well over a decade old), is arguable their most settled and innovative.

Bertie may be twice the rest of the band’s age, but you would never know it.

From the moment he enunciates the opening line of Captain Beefheart’s ‘Circumstances’ at an ad hoc sound check, he’s seriously got people’s attention.

He further shares some unintelligible banter with the crowd as the band cranks out the opening chords of the Georgia Satellites favourite ‘Keep Your Hands to Yourself’, and immediately the party begins.

His range remains remarkably undiminished. It’s perhaps a little thinner in the upper register, but all the more wholesome when digging deep with his baritone.

He is that rare commodity, a rock vocalist whose belligerent phrasing emotes passion, commitment and a sense of fun.

He’s backed by the sturdy rhythm section of drummer Rich Shelton and bassist Russ Cook who alternatively groove, boogie, stomp and rock out to give guitarist Gary Harper plenty of stylistic options over which to solo imperiously.

Gary Harper, Bertie, Russ Cook (L-R)

They belt out a pulverising boogie called ‘Graveyard Shift’ and then explore unexpected subtly on the deep funky groove of Bernard Allison’s ‘Chills N Trills’.

There’s an inevitable song about whiskey and a self penned Americana tune, the title of which escapes me because the crowd is still roaring the band on from the previous number.

They tear things up on their latest single, the stop-time boogie of ‘Old Chevy’, and then head into an extended blues on which guitarist Gary Harper takes centre stage with 2 solos full of real intensity, tonal substance, light and shade and plenty of sweat.

Not to be outdone, Bertie encourages the crowd with a holler:” Can I get another whooo?”

Everything comes together mellifluously on ‘When The Well Runs Dry’, before the fever pitch ‘6 Days On The Road’.

Remarkable the crowd – a blur of tattoos, leather jackets, gothic hair, denim, mini skirts, AC/DC T-shirts and even incongruous shorts – all coalesce to belt out the chorus, while Bertie keeps time by stamping the floorboards.

The stop-time ‘Cadillac’ finds him doubled up in a crouched position to expiate a vocal rap, and then he rolls back on his heels to punch the air on the chorus.

Steve Burton - Vincent Flatts Final Drive

The place positively bounces with the familiar ‘The Shape I’m In’ and they roar  into a climactic finale with ‘Monkey Around’.

The band is positively jubilant the explosive ‘Blues In Technicolor’, a deserved encore, which is a gargantuan collision of Burton’s animated phrasing and Harpers fierce attack .

I’m thinking it doesn’t get much better than this, a thought that applies to the evening as a whole, as much as to that particular moment in time.

Sounds cosmic? You betcha!

Album review: SUNJAY – I’m Just Like You

Sunjay - I'm Just Like You

Website [Release date 11.11.24]

This latest album by singer, songwriter and blues guitarist Sunjay is a tribute to blues legend Chris Smither. The album features 15 of Chris Smither’s original songs, it was originally recorded as a private gift for Smither’s 80th birthday, Sunjay was inspired to share the album with a wider audience – “I’ve kept the guitar parts true to Chris’ original recordings, but added my own flavour with the arrangements and production.”

Joining Sunjay are Charlie Barker (backing vocals), Josh Clark (drums, bass), Gilmore & Roberts’s Katriona Gilmore (backing vocals, fiddle), from Elles Bailey’s band, Jonny Henderson (Hammond Organ, piano) and Lee Southall (harmonica).

Jonny Henderson plays some gorgeous Hammond on ‘What It Might Have Been’, whilst ‘Help Me Now’ is a real toe tapping treat. In fact, the whole album has one big musical smile on its face, with a flurry of tasty guitar and harmonica interplay on ‘Link Of Chain’. Then there is ‘Up on the Lowdown’, a real blues/rock n roll swinger of a song with a great chorus. Lee Southall’s harmonica adds that extra bit of pizzazz.

Some reviews have likened Sunjay to a young Ralph McTell, which you can hear at times in the playing and his singing. I’d also add to that Robb Johnson, another fine and underrated singer and songwriter, particularly on ‘Train Home’ (the fiddle of Katriona Gilmore another fine addition to this song).

After hearing this album this reviewer went off and tracked down the music of Chris Smither, which I heartily urge you to do if you are not familiar with his work.

A fine and unique birthday present idea, which we are lucky enough to be able to hear and enjoy. A real dose of musical happiness and perfect for the autumnal and winter evenings. ****

EP review: CLUB PARADISE – Life On TV

club paradise

Facebook [Release date 11.10.24]

Club Paradise is made up of school friends Ryan Young (vocals/guitar), Jackson Vert (lead guitar), Harry Webb (bass) and Nathan Hogg (drums). They have been together for over a decade and it shows in that they have a tight sound/decent production values.

The EP features six tracks, of which four – ‘Chasing the Summer’, ‘Years’ & ‘What if these Days’ &‘Runaways’ – have been released on digital services ahead of the EP’s release. The EP itself will adds two more songs, ‘Interstate’ and ‘Let Me Lose’.

‘What if these Days’ has a sterling guitar solo and kicks some bottom. ‘Years’ is one for BBC 6 Music, a perfect indie pop earworm, as is ‘Chasing the Summer’. The latter is one for any summer time playlist.

‘Runaways’ adds a bit of guitar grit to the proceedings featuring another strong chorus. Neat bit of guitar on here too.

‘Let Me Lose’ is an odd one with an 80s synth pop feel, slightly at odds with the rest of the EP but it still fits in. It is almost West Coast AOR – until the heavy ending!

Loving the EP closer ‘Interstate’ with its layered harmonies and big drum & guitar sound. Perfect way to end the EP.

Club Paradise have an interesting sound, mixing indie pop rock and guitar/synth heavy verses which is very addictive even after a couple of plays. Club Paradise have that certain musical magic that acts need to succeed and now all they need is Lady Luck to help them achieve a wider audience. Check ’em out. ****

Album review: RADIOACTIVE – Reset

Frontiers [Release date : 11.10.24]

Swedish musician/songwriter/producer, Tommy Denander has been an integral part of the AOR/Melodic Rock scene for more than 25 years now.

He’s worked closely with countless musicians in the genre, most notably Bobby Kimball, Alice Cooper and Jimi Jamison (RIP).

And still does: Jeff Paris and Jim Jidhed handle 4 songs each on Reset, plus one with Robin McAuley and one with Joey Vana. Mutt Lange and Keith Scott, Bryan Adams’ guitar man, are involved too. Quite a lineup.

We’re expecting a lot. And any resemblance to the sound of Toto is purely deliberate.

The album is initially underwhelming, with the music tending to politeness, lacking the density and texture of the promised Toto type rock.

But that’s the man’s style. Clean, clear sounds, uncluttered. Easy to like and easy to get used to.

What stands out most is Denander’s finely honed instinct for a memorable chorus/hook. First single ‘Sentimental’s got a bit of Work Of Art going on. Jidhed teases out a sympathetic vocal on a cool chorus, underlining a sinuous hook that’s got all the pop immediacy of AOR circa 1986.

‘Shame On You’ has a similar template with a busier arrangement, working up to another simple yet catchy, carefully wrought hook.

Denander absorbed all the ideas that surrounded him over the years, especially his time in LA, which gave him a large palette to work from.

And that colour mix is eminently noticeable on ‘Gaia’ and ‘Hard Times To Fall In Love’. The first a slick, lightly polished, cheek to cheek dancefloor filler and the second reminiscent of the classy self produced albums Toto were releasing 40 years ago.

The Toto influence is even more noticeable on ‘The Lights Go Down’ and ‘Midnight Train’. Both beefier, sturdier AOR songs, of the kind you might encounter in the mid 80s US singles’ charts.

The title track is a song for today. Musically, it’s set within a big sounding keyboard/ electronica soundscape. Lyrically, it’s an ‘Imagine’ for Generation Z. Where Lennon emoted, McAuley punches out a dramatic vocal.

It’s noticeable that using only two or three vocalists provides the kind of continuity you normally get on a band album only. Lesson learned ? ***1/2

Album review: SLIK – The Complete Slik Collection (2 CDs)

Cherry Red [Release date : 11.10.24]

This is as much a story about two songwriters, Scotland’s Bill Martin and Irishman, Phil Coulter, as it is the story of Scottish band Slik who enjoyed a 3 year lifespan, 1975-1977. Martin and Coulter wrote the band’s hits, major and minor.

It was a turbulent time in the music business. With Pop and Glam, and NWOBHM and blues based rock all clamouring for the record buying public’s attention.

Not to mention the coming of punk.

Slik only ever released one (self titled) album, but laid down a number of tracks in the studio, many released as singles throughout Europe, attuned to the tastes of specific countries, like:

‘The Getaway’, Germany only.
‘Bom Bom’, Spain only.
‘Dancerama’, Germany only
and so on.

The album, the singles and further non album studio tracks have been shepherded into two CDs worth of Slik sounds.

The biggies are here of course, ‘Forever And Ever’, a no.1 hit in the UK. And ‘Requiem’, a top forty UK hit. Both written by Martin and Coulter, and both hits throughout Europe.

The duo were responsible for Sandie Shaw’s Eurovision winning song, ‘Puppet On A String’, and Cliff Richard’s Euro runner up, ‘Congratulations’.

More relevantly, they wrote and produced hits for the Bay City Rollers, Dave Dee, Los Bravos, Tommy Quickly and many other chart aimed seventies pop artists.

Slik experienced the same chessboard machinations as did many others, as members moved in and out of the band, eventually landing on a solid lineup of Midge Ure, Billy McIsaac, Jim McGinley and Kenny Hyslop.

Cambuslang man Ure went on to greater success with Visage, Ultravox and solo material, ultimately becoming a Band Aid founder with Bob Geldof.

The collection just oozes seventies’ pop.

‘The Boogiest Band’ is a Quo meets the Bay City Rollers in Sweet’s backyard belter.

Written by original band member Kevin McGinley, the perfect pop ballad, ‘Again My Love’ became the B side of ‘Forever And Ever’.. a veritable twofer.

There’s a toetapping, DJ remix/edit of ‘Requiem’ on the first CD, which is worth looking out for, and a select 3 track run of PVC2 tracks on CD2. PVC2 was the “punk” influenced band that Slik became, adapting and modifying their sound to reflect the evolution in popular music prevalent at the time.

31 tracks across the two discs, all released over three years in the seventies. A moment in time suspended in aspic. Worth a look. ***

Album review: HOUSE OF LORDS – Full Tilt Overdrive

Frontiers [Release date : 11.10.24]

More of a commitment than an album title, the House Of Lords 12th recording, Full Tilt Overdrive, follows through on the “in your face melodic hard rock” of their 2022 release, Saints and Sinners.

It opens with the thud of a heartbeat, quickly drowned out by chaotic street noise and an almighty roar.

The sound of life and living.

You would have thought that bringing Melodic Rock legend, Mark (Touch/ Drive She Said) Mangold on board would have at least softened the HOL sound around the edges by now. No, not to be.

Jimi Bell’s rampant axe work and James Christian’s gritty vocals often carry the day…’Crowded Room’ and ‘Bad Karma’ are gutsy and aggressively melodic rock songs, getting the album off to an explosive start.

But we expect more. We can almost imagine Christian thumbing through his dog eared melodic rock songbook, checking out the bookmarks, looking for fresh stimulation among the successes of the past.

He clearly found an inspiring idea or two with the clean lines and clear sounding production of the fiery ‘You’re Cursed’, and the tuneful arena rock of ‘Cry Of The Wicked’.

Add to that the inevitable ballad, ‘Taking The Fall’. It works all the usual lyrical tropes, but makes a mark nevertheless.

But not much more ignites. Except for two quite different tracks. The sturm und drang power metal of ‘Not The Enemy’ makes an imposing entrance, and the epic, blustery, nine minute ‘Castles High’ is a magnificently apposite curtain closer.

Full Tilt Overdrive is not what you could call a landmark release for the band, but like actors in a long running play, they are always ready for the next act, proving themselves to be more than just survivors. ***

Gig review: BLUE NATION- The Cavern, Raynes Park, London, 27 September 2024

BLUE NATION- The Cavern, Raynes Park, London, 27 September 2024

Blue Nation are a band making a growing name for themselves. They’ve actually been around quite some while, but about 18 months ago I’d been impressed enough by their support slot with Laurence Jones to buy a CD, so the release of a new album ‘Ordinary People’ and the fact they were concluding a lengthy tour with this free show at one of my regular South-West London haunts made it the perfect moment to catch them in full electric format for the first time.

There was a mixture of regulars at one of Outer London’s best rock pubs and confirmed fans with t-shirts, one of whom had even come from Holland. There was plenty of chat throughout the night, and indeed they riffed on the fact even some fans had criticised them for excessive banter- meta banter you might say.

BLUE NATION- The Cavern, Raynes Park, London, 27 September 2024

All that would just be a gimmick but for the undoubted quality of the music. Although songs like ‘Rich Girl’ and ‘Gimme Some Time’ had some big retro sounding guitar riffs and reminded me a bit of Rival Sons, even Blue Nation’s name is a little misleading as their style is refreshingly different to the crowded scene of blues rockers out there. The likes of ‘The Reason and ‘Time Is a Thief’ were song oriented and devoid of guitar heroics.

Lead singer and guitarist Neil Murdoch, sporting a military style jacket, has a lot of charisma while his voice blends well with the harmonies of bassist Luke Weston. The latter has grown his hair since I last saw them and gone full on hippy in John Lennon glasses, a paisley top and stockinged feet.

BLUE NATION- The Cavern, Raynes Park, London, 27 September 2024

A variety of influences slipped through; psychedelic pop, occasionally a hint of Chris Cornell in Neil’s vocals and even the Britpop bands that also mined the sounds of the late sixties, notably Ocean Colour Scene. Not many bands are able to joke that one of their songs ‘Old Friends’ was emo meets goes country.

The new album naturally was generously featured including the title track, ‘Run Straight Ahead’ and I Feel Low’. ‘Once In My Life’ saw Neil’s voice going falsetto, ‘Come Back Home’ showcased those psychedelic influences and ‘Strangers’ was particularly impressive. There was also a melancholic feel to many of their songs.

BLUE NATION- The Cavern, Raynes Park, London, 27 September 2024

Even in this pub environment an hour and a half long set was nearly all originals, other than slipping ‘When My Guitar Gently Weeps’ into a medley and Neil surprising Luke and drummer Nick Sharman (not that you would’ve noticed) by sneaking ‘Sweethome Alabama’ into the setlist.  ‘Every Single Time’ had a more jaunty melody and ‘Good Times’ boasted one of the relatively rare big old school riffs.

There is also a serious as well as playful side to them with Luke giving a speech about the importance of men taking about their mental health prior to the first encore in ‘Echoes’. Both that and ‘Cold Night’ were fairly downbeat songs but the big riff of closer ‘Down By the River’ left everyone in a good mood with the jug for tips in a healthy state and even the resident dogs lapping up the music. A great end of tour for this promising and quirky band who are sure to be playing bigger venues before too long.

Album review: FANS OF THE DARK – Video

Frontiers [Release date : 11.10.24]

There’s a lot to love about Fans Of The Dark’s third album, Video.

Their last album, Suburbia, was a nostalgic look at the life we led in the eighties – primarily teen culture, home entertainment and the rise of hard rock, as curated by US FM radio.

This new album moves in closer, spotlighting what now seems, in the era of streaming, a cumbersome way of watching movies, VHS Video.

The band, Freddie Allen, ex Houston; Alex Falk; Oscar Bromval and Rickard Gramfors are totally bought into this narrative, third in a series.

On Video, when there aren’t a lot of pastime choices, the underlying message is that you work the ones you’ve got, spending time with friends, relishing the moments, making memories.

Something of a cliché perhaps, but the album’s nicely crafted twin openers set the band’s stall out with a flourish. ‘Meet Me On The Corner’s big bouncy beat, brightly coloured riffs are rooted in Scandi melodic rock.

‘Let’s Go Rent A Video’, a lighter waving slice of anthemic AOR, leads us into “a pinker, fluffier world” (according to Freddie Allen).

In fact much of the album trades in eighties soft rock currency. Keyboards punch out thrills and frills, big guitars boom and Falk emotes splendidly.

Of the 11 songs, two songs in particular share the impact of those those openers, but are entirely different in style.

‘The Bay Of Blood’ is a compelling, hard edged melodic rock song, dramatic in the extreme. At first it gives the impression it’s based on the Mario Bava movie, but the lyrics don’t quite add up.

Still, it’s a refreshing change from bands who cling to the cliches of yesterday’s music.

The largely instrumental ‘Tomorrow Is Another Day’ is massive. A tribute to the moody electronic music that Cliff Martinez created for the “Drive” movie, with added whispering, and a few guitars.

Essentially, Video is a melodic/soft rock album, but those latter two tracks are as artistically compelling as anything you’ll find on Frontiers. ****

Bassist/vocalist Ryan Neff and drummer Nick Pierce have left As I Lay Dying.

New data from Billboard indicates a decline in vinyl record sales in the U.S. Between 2023 and 2024, US vinyl sales dropped 33.3%.  CD sales were down 19.5%) and digital albums  8.3%.  Streaming only showed a 7.2% increase.  Rising vinyl prices may be the reason, fuelled by erratic supply and multiple formats issued by certain big name artists.

Artists are playing 11 shows on an average tour on the grass roots circuit this year, compared with 22 in 1994.  This was highlighted at a recent industry conference when the Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy noted more than 100 music venues had closed last year.

Album review: KALANDRA – A Frame Of Mind

KALANDRA - A Frame Of Mind

By Norse Music [Release date 13.09.24]

What is it with Scandinavia – still enticing and alluring with it’s Scandi Noir blend of melancholy and repressed emotion? If you want an album to soothe the soul as we head out of a mixed-bag summer and into the winter fray, look no further than Kalandra.

This is their third album release (if you include their video game soundtrack piece) and it is simply immersive. From the opener ‘I Am’ this Nordic beauty will enrich and energise in equal measure.

What is it with the frail folksy vocal (Katrine Stenbekk) that hits the spot every time combined with engaging orchestration as on ‘Are You Ready?’ and ‘The State Of The World’. It’s like First Aid Kit meet Katatonia.

‘A Life Worth Living’ is another standout and perfectly sums up this band, this time with a more purposeful stride whilst ‘I’ll Get There One Day’ has a wonderful playout.

The band haven’t quite broken away from their folk background on this album and the closing tracks ‘Hytta’, ‘Segla’ (sung in native tongue) and ‘I Remember The Time’ point to their earlier incarnation with the debut EP ‘Beneath The Breaking Waves’ in 2017.

The band, based in Oslo, have been in existence for some 13 years and beset by line-up changes which suggests why we have only had three albums, including the debut ‘The Line’ in 2020. Vocalist Katrine joined them in 2013 when she was studying in Liverpool. This brings to mind another band who have emerged from that city (and the performing arts school) in recent years, the similarly energising Exploring Birdsong.

Turn on the heat, settle down with your favourite tipple, and let ‘A Frame Of Mind’ wash over you as you contemplate cooler days ahead. The perfect antidote. ****1/2

Gig review: DIESEL PARK WEST – The Sound Lounge, Sutton, Surrey 28 September 2024

Pete Feenstra chattied to John Butler for his show on Get Ready to ROCK! Radio playing tracks from the current album.  First broadcast 24 November 2024

DIESEL PARK WEST - The Sound Lounge, Sutton, Surrey 28 September 2024

While it’s true to say that any band’s commercial success or durability is often tied in with the vacillations of the musical market place, there’s no denying the qualities of real song craft.

And tonight’s appearance by Leicester’s Diesel Park West at a cosy South London venue proved to be a potent reminder of the observational and melodic abilities of the band’s mainstay John C. Butler (as he is now known), and his startling uncompromised vocal range.

But first, a brief Q & A session with journo/broadcaster Paul Sexton who is also responsible for the consistently high programming values of Sutton’s Sound Lounge venue.

It provides the perfect context for a band with a catalogue of songs who have long deserved more than the pop world ever delivered.

And while the stories regarding their label, Blur & even the Stones almost settle on the same sort of regret that infuses ‘Jackie’s Still Sad’ – one of the later evening career highlights – the fact that the band open with material from their excellent 2019 American release ‘Let It Melt’ album,  suggests there’s still plenty of creativity in the tank.

There’s still the familiar big anthemic sound, jangling guitars and a whiff of psychedelia, while at his most angst ridden, Butler’s vocal evokes the grit of Dylan, and on moments of real fisson he recalls Lennon.

DIESEL PARK WEST - The Sound Lounge, Sutton, Surrey 28 September 2024

And DPW is still very much a band, with versatile guitarist Rich Barton adding a Roger McGuinn style jangle and Keith Richard influenced beefy riffs, all glued together by his own wide ranging tonal array.

Both he and bassist Darryl Hopper add subtle bv’s when called on, while drummer Dave Bryant locks together the ebbs of flows of a set list which builds by degrees.

And there centrestage, is  the southpaw guitarist and and animated vocalist Butler who contorts his wiry frame to where the lyrics take him

They open with unfettered energy of ‘Let It Melt’ and the suitable bombast of ‘Bomb’s Away’, before things turn spiky on ‘Living In The UK’, though it’s tempered by a call to sort things out.

The enduring ‘Fall To Love’ from the ’91 ‘Decency’ album still resonates,  while the rapture  of the new ‘Wonder (Just A Word)’ reverts to their Byrds 6 string sound.

Butler wryly tells us the country infused offering has brought them recent unexpected success on the Hertitage chart.

They stick with the sensory country vibe on The Wound That Doesn’t Heal’, an impressive outing from the new ‘Presley Trap’ album.

And as if to tap into the reciprocal energy between the band and their crowd, they segue straight into ‘Out of Nowhere’, on a perfect example of prosody on the ethereal uplifting refrain ‘In Another World’.

They rock hard mid-70’s Stones style on ‘Everybody’s Going Nuts’, while the enveloping ‘All The Myths On Sunday’ sweeps all in it its way to provide the pivotal moment of the night.

Perhaps the answer lies in the sing-along section of ‘Here I Stand’ and the anthemic ‘Bell of Hope’.

The latter is given a Victor Hugo dedication and every member of the audience sings along with the kind of gusto that Bono used encourage from a U2 crowd.

A case of being beaten to the post by a whisker perhaps?

No matter, all these years later DPW are still full of vitality and a front man who leads the band into the rapturous ‘Like Princes Do’ and the climactic Stones influenced ‘When The Hoodoo Comes’, on which Rich Barton adds subtle slide colourations.

There’s still time for a wry dig at Oasis, before the band launch into the Stonesy chimes of ‘The Waking Hour’, as part of 2 encores, on which the indefatigable Butler really looks like he’s enjoying himself.

After all this time, who could ask for more?

Gig review: NICK LOWE AND LOS STRAITJACKETS- London Palladium, 24 September 2024

NICK LOWE AND LOS STRAITJACKETS- London Palladium, 24 September 2024

Nick Lowe is one of rock’s most distinguished statesmen, with a history that includes his time in Brinsley Schwarz, seen as the original pub rockers, then a mainstay of the new wave as producer, songwriter and performer. Indeed there is a case for naming him alongside Difford and Tilbrook, Paul Weller and Elvis Costello as the most enduring figures from that movement.

I’d never got round to seeing him (unless you count a West London restaurant local to us both, or in the crowd at a gig) but when some seat fillers were announced, my partner and I thought he was worth a punt, not least as they were decent seats at one of our favourite venues, the London Palladium.

NICK LOWE AND LOS STRAITJACKETS- London Palladium, 24 September 2024

Chris Difford had been due to support but was replaced at short notice by namesake Andy Fairweather Low. The smartly suited Welshman was very self deprecating and said he would be talking as much as possible to hide his lack of material. These days better known as a respected guitar sideman (indeed he was part of the all star Peter Green tribute here just before  the pandemic) he played with Eric Clapton for many years and in one of his many stories credited him for helping broaden his outlook from soul to blues.

Despite all the false modesty he sang his Amen Corner sixties smashes ‘Bend Me Shape Me’ and ‘If Paradise Is Half As Nice’,  and his seventies solo hit ‘Wide Eyed and Legless’ and the voice is still instantly recognisable and has (pun intended) weathered well. My other amusement was that he could rival Pope Francis in a Jim Bowen lookalike contest!

NICK LOWE AND LOS STRAITJACKETS- London Palladium, 24 September 2024

A compere gave the big introduction to Nick Lowe, instantly recognisable with his silver hair and oversized spectacles. He talked less but like his support act he has a low key presence rather than act the rock star, unobtrusively playing acoustic guitar. What was unexpected was his backing band Los Straitjackets, who are an experienced American act previously unknown to me. They were extremely tight but – rather off puttingly for me- all in Slipknot- style masks.

Songs like ‘I Went to a Party’ and ‘Without Love’ had the feeling of rockabilly or early rock and roll while his lyrics on his ‘Lately I’ve Let Things Slide’ conveyed the weltschmerz of middle age in very clever fashion. However after another enjoyable fifties-style rocker in ‘Tokyo Bay’ and the gig less than half an hour old, the main man left the stage for nearly 20 minutes for Los Straitjackets to play some tidy surf and garage rock style instrumentals, though the mime routine and a squawking rubber duck meant that by the time Nick returned, I was rather hoping he would say ‘this is all getting rather silly’ in the mode of the late Python Graham Chapman.

NICK LOWE AND LOS STRAITJACKETS- London Palladium, 24 September 2024

With normal service resumed, there were some more enjoyable tunes in ‘Trombone’ and in particular ‘Ragin’ Eyes’, while I also loved the way Nick  wrapped his tongue with relish  around some deceptively  simple lyrical rhymes, notably on ‘House for Sale’. There were a number of songs dotted around the set from his brand new album ‘Indoor Safari’ including ‘Blue On Blue’.

By now, as only a casual follower over the years,  I was hoping for some more familiar tunes and he obliged with ‘Cruel To Be Kind’ which I remember like yesterday  watching on ‘Top of the Pops’ as a 12 year old – his voice was a little less forceful than in those days but my attention  wandered as that was when the camera police belatedly decided to march down the aisles to get people to stop filming.

NICK LOWE AND LOS STRAITJACKETS- London Palladium, 24 September 2024

He finished with some better known songs in Brinsley Schwarz’s ‘What’s So Funny Bout Peace Love And Understanding’ as popularised by Elvis Costello, and the song he wrote for Rockpile  colleague Dave Edmunds in ‘I Knew the Bride (When She Used to Rock’n’Roll’) rocked in lively fashion, though not enough to get a rather reserved crowd of mature years out of their seats.

The gig seemed to have ended quite early and the first encore was a clever instrumental of ‘Venus’ by Los Straitjackets before Nick returned for the Rockpile song ‘When I Write The Book’.  After a fairly short hour and a half that was it, but he came back solo to play Elvis Costello’s ‘Alison’, which was his privilege as the producer of his first two albums. Indeed it was a suitable note to end on as a reminder that he was handmaiden to a wider movement as well as a star in his own right. I was very glad to take that last minute decision to see him.

Album review: MOUNTAIN – Over The Top

MOUNTAIN - Over the Top

Voiceprint [Release date 04.10.24]

Formed by guitarist/vocalist Leslie West in the late 60s, Mountain took their name from West’s debut solo album and soon became successful and important in the US hard rock/blues rock scene.

Mountain are (or should be) a staple of any 70s rock record collection, and listening to this set it’s easy to see their influence. Originally released in 1995, this compilation mixes album tracks with the odd live and single version, and is updated with new sleevenotes. So whether you have Mountain in your collection or not, it’s well worth the money.

Disc 1 opens with several tracks from that West solo album (oft considered the first Mountain album), which showcases West’s raw vocals and bluesy guitar. There’s a distinct hint of Cream, a nod to Hendrix, and the occasional hint of a Monkeys-esque whimsical feel.

Retaining bassist/keyboard player/producer Felix Pappalardi, and recruiting drummer Corky Laing, Mountain were formed and the classic LP Climbing. So from there on this fine compilation we get a range of tracks, including the classic Mississippi Queen, and further on a 20 minute live version of Stormy Monday. This track is taken from the 1971 V/A 3LP Isle Of Wight. There’s some earthy bluesy rock’n’roll here, lots to love.

Disc 2 features the classic Nantucket Sleighride and takes through some more 70s work, two tracks from the 1985 reformation LP Go For Your Life (I saw them play at Knebworth that year), and a couple of previously unreleased tracks too.

The track listing is excellent as it combines the best known songs with album tracks, live, singles and rarities nicely. Much like the sleevenotes, a good overview, and mastering / sound quality to match.

Sadly Leslie West is no longer with us, and comprehensive reissue campaign of both Mountain and his solos albums would be very welcome. And Timely. Also worth checking out are the albums he made with Cream’s Jack Bruce, as West Bruce & Laing.

Worth anyone’s money.  ****

Album review : D-A-D Speed Of Darkness

AFM Records [Release date 04.10.24]

Not often we review a museum piece.

Copenhagen’s Peoples Museum is celebrating D-A-D’s 40 years in the music business this year.

The band itself is recognising this milestone with a double album of brand new material, Speed Of Darkness.

Many of the headline hardrock bands of the late seventies/ early eighties were allowed time to develop and fine tune their sound by the label they had signed to. It was a patient approach often rewarded by huge album sales.

The fact that D-A-D have never been afforded the luxury of consistent, third party financial underpinning speaks volumes for their tenacity and persistence.

Arguably, 2011’s Dic Nil Lan Daft Erd Ark was the pinnacle of the band’s recorded work, rock music developed during 30 years of road tests; smart, skilful songwriting and considerable studio experience.

Arguably, ever since that point the band have been honing their sound, making minor adjustments here, small changes there, cultivating musical deftness in order to further animate their lyrical ideas.

That process has led to this, their 13th album, hitting the target with unerring accuracy on ‘God Prays To Man’s painful observation of a world in turmoil; Singing like a preacherman on the electrifying ‘First, Second and Third’; The vocal shadows on the bluesy love song, ‘Head Over Heels’, creating texture and depth; and so on and on.

The sheer commerciality of Nick Foss’s production raises the music a notch or two above most of the previous albums. It’s clear that the band, Jacob and Jesper Binzer, Laust Sonne and Stig Pederson were all tuned to the same wavelength here, knocking out song after song with fresh, sometimes Stonesy sounding riffs and tough, melodic hooks. With each lyric carrying an emotional weight and a rewarding payoff.

The band is midway through a 24 stop European tour (all sold out), culminating mid December in Hamburg.

Their fans are in for a treat. ****1/2

Get Ready to ROCK! - The Best of 2024

Nikk Gunns adds…

Danish legends D-A-D have recently celebrated their 40th anniversary and as new album “Speed of Darkness” proves, they sound as fresh as ever- in fact, all new bands should be handed a copy of this album and told this is what 40 sounds like.

Album number 13 is a 14-track masterclass without a weak moment in sight. The songs on offer here range from the classic D-A-D of “Crazy Wings” to the excellent opening track “God Prays to Man”  to the more chaotic sounding “Waiting Is The Way” or the slower  “The Ghost”, which reminds me of the band’s 2002 “Soft Dogs” album, and there are a couple of other slower numbers in “Head Over Heels” and “I’m Still Here”.

Personally, my favourite track on “Speed of Darkness” is “Keep That MF Down”, but I could have easily picked “1st, 2nd & 3rd”, “Automatic Survival” , the album’s title track itself or “In My Hands” as this really is one of those records where you are spoilt for choice (and unusual to see a 14 track album these days too).

Over the decades D-A-D have released consistently good albums, and this one is no let down to that great catalogue of material. The band have quite a few gigs lined up for later this year and it would be good to think they may make it as far as the UK in the near future as their live show is always fun and well worth catching if you haven’t had the chance before. *****

EP review: ALL I KNOW – Stiletto Nightmare

all-i-know

Website [Release date 01.08.24]

This refreshingly ‘80’s inspired slab of keyboard heavy melodic rock would have been all over the radio in years gone by, but for now bands like All I Know are keeping the light flickering for legions of music fans worldwide.

All I know are not a new band, as this 4-track EP is the follow up to 2008’s “Vanity Kills” album, but do now come as a 6 piece line-up.  The band’s sound has all those essential ‘80’s elements – keyboards, great guitar hooks, big choruses and bigger drums. There are echoes of the Scorpions in “(I Can’t Get You) Out of My Head”, but also a sound reminiscent of Europe’s “Prisoners In Paradise” album throughout, in particular on tracks ”As Long As The Night Goes On” and “Hidin’ From Love”, fans of Stage Dolls will also find something to enjoy here.

Highly enjoyable, highly recommended. ****

Album review: MOONSTONE PROJECT – New Life

MOONSTONE PROJECT – New Life

Escape Music [Release date 18.09.24]

Moonstone Project is masterminded by guitarist and songwriter Matt Filippini. ‘New Life’ is a re-issue, of sorts, as it sees the Moonstone Project’s 2006 album ‘Time To Take A Stand’, being completely remixed and remastered by Fredrik Folkare, plus being renamed appropriately.

The album is an all-star affair featuring the likes of Alessandro Del Vecchio, Ian Paice, Glenn Hughes, Graham Bonnet, Ken Hensley, James Christian and many more.

Often these all-star affairs can sound a bit disjointed, however, with the Moonstone Project Matt Filippini is involved in the songwriting across the whole album (including a few tasty co-writes with the likes of Glenn Hughes and Kelly Keeling). This allows the album’s 70s classic rock vibe to come through loud and clear.

Highlights? Opener ‘Silent Hunter’ sets the bar high with Andrew Freeman on vocals with Ian Paice and Tony Franklin moving the song along nicely. Paul Shortino sounds in fine fettle on ‘Pictures of My Lonely Days’ and Matt Filippini’s guitar solo is the icing on this particular musical cake.

Glenn Hughes – never a shrinking violet in the vocal histrionics department – certainly gives it his all on ‘Closer Than You Think’. Blue Oyster Cult’s Eric Bloom adds the class you’d expect to ‘On the Way to Moonstone’. Needless to say with Bloom and the song’s sound, it recalls classic late 70s/early 80s Blue Oyster Cult.

The funk rock of ‘Beggar of the Love Knocker’ (the title alone should ring alarm bells!) featuring James Christian is best avoided. He redeems himself on ‘Madman’ where Ken Hensley and former Jethro Tull drummer Clive Bunker added their musical talents, making it one of the album stand outs.

Fancy a bit of Rainbow? The album’s closing track ‘Not Dead Yet’ fulfils that need, with not only former Rainbow vocalist Graham Bonnet but also a Blackmore styled solo from Filippini and a mesmerising Hammond solo from Gianluca Tagliavini.

Having not been properly distributed on its original release, full marks to Escape for giving this classy piece of hard rock a proper release. If you enjoy any of the singers featured, you’ll be sure to enjoy this one. ***1/2

Album review: THE CORONAS – Thoughts & Observations

coronas

So Far So Good [Release date 27.09.24]

The Coronas are a big deal in their native Ireland where their last three albums have gone straight to number 1 in the Irish charts.

Although technically a three-piece, with Danny O’Reilly (vocals, piano and guitar), Graham Knox (bass) and Conor Egan (drums), the band used their touring musicians on this album with Lar Kaye (All Tvvins) on guitar, Cian MacSweeney (True Tides) on sax and Roisin O on backing vocals.

‘Speak Up’ was the first single from the album, a lively affair with a strong chorus. The up-tempo ‘Singing Just For You (On Occasion)’ has plenty of heft and depth in the arrangements.

‘Confirmation’ is perhaps the album’s vocal highlight, made that little bit extra special by pianist and composer Jamie Duffy. The other guest is singer and songwriter Gabrielle Alpin on ‘That’s Exactly What Love Is’. An emotive tour de force and both singers complement each other.

Loving ‘At Least She’s Laughing’, which sounds not unlike Marillion’s Steve Hogarth, circa that band’s ‘Holidays In Eden’ era. The backing vocals of Roisin O add a bit more magic too.

The Coronas could easily make more headway into the UK as their music is easy on the ear and Danny O’Reilly has a powerful, melodious vocal. An enjoyable album for sure, it just lacks a couple more ‘wow’ moments like ‘Confirmation’ and ‘At Least She’s Laughing’. Like the latest one from Snow Patrol, fine to listen to but you’re not itching to play it again. ***1/2

Album review: JON BODEN & THE REMNANT KINGS – Parlour Ballads

JON BODEN & THE REMNANT KINGS – Parlour Ballads

Hudson Records [Release date 27.09.24]

“Parlour Music” is a genre that has been much derided over the centuries. Its heyday was the Victorian era when many middle-class houses had pianos and many middle-class sons and daughters could sight-read piano scores to a high level, musical literacy being highly prized.

This album is not a collection of parlour songs in the technical sense of the term, but it does seek to awaken the sound of the old, well loved, slightly out of tune domestic piano and to reunite it with (or introduce it to) songs that might feel glad of the acquaintance.

As Jon Boden explains, “I have been toying with the idea of a piano-based folk album for many years. Although I consider myself a competent-at-best pianist (my sight reading would certainly not have passed muster in the middle-class Victorian parlour described above) I adore playing piano and have probably spent as many thousands of hours trying to get to grips with it as I have the fiddle or the guitar. In particular I love using it to accompany slow, sentimental ballads such as several of the tracks on this album.”

Parlour Ballads was produced by long time collaborator Andy Bell and features The Remnant Kings – Sam Sweeney, Ben Nicholls, Rob Harbron, Sally Hawkins & M G Boulter. Paul Sartin was a key member of the Remnant Kings for ten years and was involved in the early developments of this album, before his passing in 2022.

The first single from the album, ‘Old Brown’s Daughter’, is one of the finest vocal performances from Jon Boden, although to be fair he is one of the finest folk singers around today! However, it is ‘Mortal Cares’ that steals the show, with a modern air and haunting backing vocals that kept reminding me of ‘Ghost Town’ by the Specials! Not an artist you’d think of when listening to an album of traditional songs.

Not sure who provides the deep backing vocals on ‘Merry Mountain Child’, but they add an extra bit of magic to the song, along with the pedal steel playing of M.G. Boulter.

‘Oggie Man’ is a toe tapper, with an Americana feel, although the piano’s sound keeps it within the parlour ballads sound. The folk tradition of murder is represented by ‘Prentice Boy’. Wonderfully sung by Jon Boden with banjo and dobro adding to the overall air of menance.

Jon Boden rarely puts a musical foot wrong and he has another winner here with ‘Parlour Ballads’, ably aided by the Remnant Kings. Proof that traditional music can be given a fresh sound with each passing generation of musicians. Perfection. ****

Book review: DANCE WITH THE DEVIL – The Cozy Powell Story by Laura Shenton

Dance With The Devil – The Cozy Powell Story,

Wymer Publishing

Drummer Cozy Powell, famed for his work with Jeff Beck, Rainbow, MSG, Whitesnake, Black Sabbath and Bian May, has a CV longer than most could ever wish for, with success and obscure sessions and a family tree that’ll take you down many a rabbit warren. And a book on the dear chap (he was a good friend, back in the day, confiding a lot with me and phoning me a day or so before he died) has been long overdue.

Both of these books are put together by Laura Shenton, the first edition of the Cozy Powell Story appearing a few years back, and has now been updated. I am reliably informed that the first edition made mistakes along the lines of over-glamorising the wrong things, for example that he didn’t excel at school (according to a cousin, he did excel).

The book looks back (briefly) to his childhood, his adoption (understandable that there’s not a lot of information available there), school days and early bands. The Corals (not his first band) are discussed with quotes from Cozy and others associated, form vintage press interviews), and their record breaking show in Cirencester is mentioned, before going through The Sorcerers, Youngblood et al.

A couple of points I noticed, for example mentioning the label the first Sorcerers 45 was released on (SABA) but not mentioning Palatten for their third (featuring Cozy), in the chapter or discography, and material not being available until the 2023 Bedlam box (everything on there bar the remix had been previously available). A fair bit of information around the Big Bertha and Ace Kefford releases, and a chat about the Woodstock appearance with Tony Joe White.

The Jeff Beck period is good but info on the unfinished album of Motown covers (having heard it, it needs exploring further). Cozy’s first marriage is mentioned too.

A nice touch – where there are two sides to how Cozy’s audition with Jeff Beck (Cozy’s and Jeff’s), both are covered.

When a topic is gone into in depth, it is well written, the historic interviews fleshed out (some Amazon reviews criticise the book for being too much of a cut and paste, but there is more to it than that), but some of the topics, starting here with some of the session work, are glossed over too quickly.

One chapter that makes this worth while is one dedicated to Cozy’s mid 70s motor racing with lots of information.

A bonus, as one thing that’s never been clear is the period Cozy did take a break from music, as the dates above are 74/75, which overlaps with several session releases, and Cozy was always adamant that the break came after the 1975 breakdown of Strange Brew.

The Rainbow section is interesting, but could have been covered in more depth (although other Rainbow books are available). But strange to imply that it was alluded to that LA Connection was about Tony Carey quitting during the Long Live Rock’n’Roll sessions when Cozy made it direct and clear (in a publicly available interview) that it definitely was.

Sadly all of Cozy’s solo work is dealt with lightly at best. To say that not much was written about those albums at the time may be the case, but surely there’s an invitation to go do some research (contributors to those albums, and people who HAVE written about them, aren’t all dead yet).

While every chapter does have some interesting information, the approach is a little skewed. For example, late 80s, we get Sharon Osbourne’s petulant name calling as Iommi put together a new line-up of Sabbath, but there’s little mention of Cajo (featuring Cozy and Neil Murray), a track or two used for The Drums Are Back.

There’s a discog overview, many records there that’ll be new to the average fan. One issue is where Cozy only appeared on a single or two (for example Hot Chocolate), or tracks otherwise unreleased (The Arrows), there are several and much better compilations available than those listed. No label information, and a couple of the records, the Plum & Youth and Young & Moody Band 45s good examples, where there’s a good story or two that could have been covered.

The gigography is good too. Well worth a look.

Largely well written, and in the main the paper research is good. But it stops there; there’s quite an archive of historic press cuttings that must have been gone through, although some briefly as you do see the same interviews (Melody Maker, Rhythm, Classic Rock, More Black Than Purple and a couple more) referred to again and again. The interview I ran with Cozy Powell in Record Collector is quoted twice; a shame not more so as a few of the gaps are addressed there for a start. I have also interviewed Don Airey and Glenn Tipton, again both in the public domain,

I have a few more stories too, regaled in person and by phone. The lack of actually talking to people hasn’t helped fill the gaps.

Even so, something here for everyone.

The A Life In Vision book is more a coffee table approach, with text soundbites interspacing pictures, mainly of press cuttings and photos of Cozy. There are many pictures of records too. Lots to really enjoy, the number of press cuttings makes an interesting read.

A rare photo of a US pressing of the Bedlam LP, an early pressing titled Beast, something that should have been made more of in the book. And like all the photos of records, should have been much larger (and most of the colourful worldwide pressings of Dance With The Devil are both small and unlabelled, need a country of origin). Too much space taken up by a number similar and large photos, all clearly from the same photoshoot; make them half or quarter page and make some of the other pictures larger and labelled.

If you’re a fan of Cozy Powell, or any of the artists he played with, or even just have a passing interest, both books are well worth a look. However, in terms of the nitty gritty, some missed opportunities.  ****

Single review: CIRCUS 66 – Save The Damn World

circus 66

Facebook [Release date 20.09.24]

Having already made a seismic impression with their live shows and debut album ‘Follow the Black Crow’, sizzling four-piece Circus 66 unleash this new chapter from their soon to be released sophomore ‘Elements’.

For those who’ve caught the band before, their own brand of supercharged hard rock flavoured with shards of Southern fried goodness will already be an addiction but ‘Save the Damn World’ ups the ante, the outfit sounding bigger, dirtier and louder than ever.

Opening with the blistering howl of vocalist Annabelle Zaychenko, the freight train punch of Matt Pearce’s riff riding on the thunderous groove of rhythm section Luke Ward and Leigh Holley, it’s an adrenaline rush that will make you a convert for life. With the accompanying post apocalyptic video shot by Kris Barras, this is a mouthwatering taster for the next album and should put the quartet firmly on the road to even bigger things. Ballsy, hook-filled and utterly irresistible, you’ll be singing this for weeks.

Album review : AGENT STEEL – Mad Locust Rising, Live At Hammersmith Odeon (CD/DVD Deluxe Digipak)

Cherry Red [Release date : 27.09.24)

20th June 1987. Agent Steel headlined a line up that included Onslaught and Nuclear Assault at the Hammersmith Odeon, most famously known for Motorhead’s “No Sleep ‘Til...”

The band had been unable to avoid the hiring and firing virus than ran rampant through rock and metal during the eighties (and seventies and nineties). Founding member, vocalist and songwriter, John Cyriis was reportedly infamous for forcing abrupt line up changes.

Consequently, lead guitarist and rising star, James Murphy (later to join Testament and Obituary) having only just been recruited, got little notice of the gig. You could never tell.
(He’d almost quit the day before – it’s all in the liner notes, along with many more fascinating, sometimes excruciatingly true stories.)

From those liner notes, Olaf (Enforcer) Wikstand speaks of Agent Steel: “Around the time they were more extreme than most of the (Thrash Metal) bands out there. In every single bar something’s happening. It’s fast, aggressive and over the top”.

It would have been a tragedy if the band’s mix of power metal, thrash, speed, attitude and adrenaline had not been captured in sound and in vision that night.

The Tracklist:

‘Evil Eye’, ‘Bleed For The Godz’ (both from the band’s debut album).

‘Nothin' Left’, ‘The Day At Guyana’ (instrumental), ‘Rager’ and ‘Never Surrender’ (all from Unstoppable Force)

‘Mad Locust Rising’ and ‘The Ripper’ (from the MLR EP)

‘The Unexpected’ (brand new song)

‘The Ripper’ (Priest cover), wrapped in razoring axework, and ‘Mad Locust Rising’, a slow start then a frantic rush to the finishing line (One of very few metal songs about insects) are especially notable for their nailed to the wall delivery.

Just raw, primal metal, unadulterated by overdubs or any other kind of mixing desk interference.

The gig is testament to all the kudos showered on the band by so many other musicians.

The DVD is a very welcome bonus. Seeing the band live is instructive. Especially seeing James Murphy’s face as he screws up the intro to ‘The Unexpected’.
Always leave them laughing? ***1/2
