News: RAY WILSON announces live DVD recording

We are very happy to announce that Ray Wilson, named by Classic Rock Magazine one of the greatest British vocalists of all time, will record his first official live DVD in February. The event will take place on February, 22nd in Wyspianski Theatre in Katowice, Poland where Ray will join the line-up of “An evening at the Theatre”. Other bands confirmed for that night are RPWL and Clive Nolan’s Alchemy project. Due to unforeseen circumstances The Paul Menel Band’s show has been cancelled.

The year 2013 is very special for Ray Wilson – it marks twenty years since the release of his first studio album – “Swing Your Bag” with Guaranteed Pure. His show in theatre entitled „20 years and more” was prepared especially for this occasion and will also include songs from his current live project Genesis Classic – “Not about us”, “Follow you follow me”, “Mama”, but mainly tracks from Ray’s solo career – “Tale from a small town”, “First day of change”, “Another Day”, and others recorded with Stiltskin – “Inside”, “Lemon Yellow Sun”, “Constantly Reminded”

We can also expect the material taken from his forthcoming solo album “Chasing Rainbows”. Ray Wilson will perform with an ensemble consisting of a String Quartet plus Piano, Saxophone, Flute, Clarinet, Acoustic and Lead Guitars. The show will be recorded and released on CD and DVD later this year.

Ray Wilson, who according to Classic Rock Magazine is one of the greatest vocalists in Great Britain, is regarded as an exceptional songwriter, renowned across the world for his charismatic presence as an extraordinary entertainer. This native Scotsman founded his first professional band Guaranteed Pure with his brother Steve in the early nineties, releasing three studio albums.

In 1994 he joined the Scottish band Stiltskin as their frontman. Their debut single “Inside” was an immediate sensation on the grunge scene reaching number one in many European countries. To this day “Inside” retains an undisputed leading position as an advertising hit (“Levi’s”). Thanks to the amazing success of Stiltskin, the musicians from Genesis noticed Ray Wilson and took him on after the resignation of Phil Collins. From 1996 to 1999 he was the singer/songwriter of the legendary pop group and during that time he recorded the fourth best-selling album in the band’s history – “Calling All Stations”.

After the rock legends split up, Wilson got back in touch with his roots and released the album “Millionairhead” with Guaranteed Pure, with the songs being written by him and his brother Steve Wilson. Together with their new musical direction the name of the band was changed from Guaranteed Pure to CUT_. In order to promote the album the group appeared as a stadium support act on tour with the bands Scorpions and Westernhagen, and in 1999 they played in large arenas in Germany and neighboring countries. In 2001 Ray Wilson began his solo career at the world famous Edinburgh International Festival. After countless concerts in Europe, as well as in South and Central America, Wilson released his first solo album “Change” in 2003 and performed, as a special guest, on tour with Joe Jackson and Saga.

In the next few years Ray Wilson went on the road with Dolores O’Riordan from the Cranberries as well as with Supertramp frontman Roger Hogdson. In August 2006 Ray Wilson and Stiltskin celebrated a spectacular return with their studio album “She”.

Together with the new line-up they went on tour for the whole year. In addition, Wilson’s current live project Genesis Classic, brings together 12 musicians on European stages, involving musicians from Stilskin and the Berlin Symphony Ensemble. Violins and cellos add a lot to the sound of the numerous classic albums that Genesis created during their career. In September 2011 Ray Wilson & Stiltskin released their long-awaited studio album “Unfulfillment”.

Ray has combined here the energy of rock music with lyrics of great depth and complex string arrangements. All the songs have been written by Ray Wilson, Uwe Metzler, and Peter Hoff, a number one producer from Stuttgart (Die Fantastischen Vier, Beth Hard, Lou Bega). The first single chosen to promote the album was “American Beauty”.

Currently living in Poland, Ray is a founder of the Ray Wilson Foundation that works in Poznan. The aim of the Foundation is to activate and support people from the margins of society. In May 2012 the President of Poznan honored Ray Wilson with the title of an Ambassador of Poznan. His forthcoming new solo album entitled “Chaising Rainbows” will be released later this year.

The special evening at the Theatre will be enriched by two additional concerts. One of the Artists performing that night will be Clive Nolan (Arena, Pendragon, Caamora) who, along with stellar musicians, will perform his latest project “Alchemy”. The other one is a German band RPWL and, as they announce, it will be the last complete performance of “Beyond Man and Time” album in Europe.

News: DIO – Deluxe Edition Album – Dream Evil

Universal are pleased to announce the release of a deluxe edition of Dio’s ‘Dream Evil’ album on March 4th 2013.

When Ronnie James Dio finally succumbed to stomach cancer in May 2010, the world of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal lost one of its most talented and fervent ambassadors. As lead vocalist to such Rock giants as Rainbow and Black Sabbath, as well as fronting his own eponymous band for nearly three decades, Dio created some of the genres most defining and respected works.

Albums such as Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow, Rising and Long Live Rock ‘N’ Roll for Ritchie’s post Deep Purple band Rainbow; then Heaven And Hell, Mob Rules and Dehumanizer for the mighty Black Sabbath and with his own band Dio, albums such as Holy Diver, The Last In Line and Sacred Heart, all stand as towering monuments of sheer class and brilliance in the Rock pantheon.

As a live performer, Dio knew few equals. With his lions roar and incredible vocal range, the front-man presided over countless memorable rock shows, delighting millions of fans all over the world.

Born Ronald James Padavona in 1942 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire into close Italian-American stock, the young Ronnie began his recording career whilst still at school. Initially learning trumpet and French Horn (the breathing technique for which would later assist him with his powerful vocal style), Ronnie moved onto bass guitar and vocals for bands such as The Vegas Kings who later became Ronnie And The Rumblers (later the Red Caps) and Ronnie Dio And The Prophets (Dio being a reference to the mafia member Johnny Dio).

Winning a scholarship to New York’s famous Juliard School for the performing arts, Ronnie by this time had discovered Rock And Roll, the pursuit of which led him to support Deep Purple with his new band Elf. Ronnie’s powerful vocal would catch the attention of Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore who later enlisted Dio, along with his fellow Elf band members, when Blackmore was looking to recruit his new project, Rainbow.

Staying with Ritchie from ’75 to ’79 and recording the aforementioned studio albums, as well as the live album On Stage, Dio eventually departed citing musical differences. A chance meeting with guitarist Tony Iommi in, of all places, the Rainbow Bar & Grill in West Hollywood, found Dio filling the lead vocal position in Black Sabbath replacing the previously jettisoned Ozzy Osbourne. This combination produced two explosive studio albums and lifted Black Sabbath once again to the pinnacle of the Metal vanguard.

However, differing personalities between the British and U.S. factions of the band would come to a head during the mixing of the live album, Live Evil and his refusal to support Ozzy Osbourne for some U.S. shows lead Ronnie and drummer Vinnie Appice to lay the foundation for a new band, the neatly named, Dio.

Dream Evil is Dio’s fourth album, released on July 21, 1987. It features former Rough Cutt members Craig Goldy and Claude Schnell, and includes the singles “All The Fools Sailed Away” and “I Could Have Been a Dreamer”. Dream Evil was Dio’s last album to feature drummer Vinny Appice

This new 2-cd deluxe edition comes with a bonus disc containing amounts other tracks the bands triumphant gig at Monsters of Rock. An expanded booklet with notes by Malcolm Dome endorsed by Ronnie’s widow Wendy makes this the next in line of ultimate Dio reissues.

Album: Thenewno2 – Beautiful Creatures soundtrack

When you think of The Beatles the first thing that comes to mind isn’t usually psychedelic indie rock, which is probably why Dhani Harrison (son of the brilliant George Harrison, naturally) has managed to keep his band a separate entity from his father’s famous 60’s pop posse. The intriguingly named Thenewno2 come to us with their 1st the original soundtrack, to the recent film “Beautiful Creatures” starring Jeremy Irons and Emma Thompson.

The album altogether has “film soundtrack” written all over it, with an obvious narrative progression throughout; from the eerie “Swamptronica/Voudon”, to the atmospheric “Ridley’s Claiming” and the climatic “Lena Runs to Ethan”; even the track names scream “this is part of a story!”

The thing that stops the film soundtrack from working as a standalone album is the constant repetition – half way through you find yourself thinking “haven’t I heard this one before?” which would eventually get rather boring and tedious (not the sort of thing you want on your iPod). This is however completely justified by the fact it is the score to a film – having the same motifs throughout work when most of the excitement is onscreen.

In spite of the almost formulaic structure of the album, some parts are however broken up with more juxtaposing tracks that give it much more depth. The overall theme might be dramatic and mystical but when you hit songs like “The Burning Sign” and the country and western sounding “The Honey Hill Stomp” it suggests the film itself plays on a more realistic range of genres rather than just focussing on the magical element – it’s not romance and fantasy all the time.

Overall, Dhani and his crew have done a brilliant job of creating pieces of music that that can tell both a quietly emotional yet excitingly tense story, and I’d truly be surprised if Beautiful Creatures is anything less than a supernatural epic.

Album review: KOMPENDIUM – Beneath The Waves

7 Stones Records (Release Date 11.2.13)

Every so often, and it’s becoming ever more rare, an album comes along that is so fine it assumes iconic status.

Sergeant Pepper, Pet Sounds, Led Zeppelin 4, Tubular Bells, Dark Side Of The Moon and Jeff Wayne’s ‘War Of The Worlds’ are all examples of this phenomenon and, such is the brilliance of this magnum opus, ‘Beneath The Waves’ is surely destined to acquire the mantle.

Kompendium is the brainchild of progressive rock luminary Rob Reed (Magenta, Chimpan-A) who has called in all his favours at once to assemble a collection of musicians that reads like a Who’s Who of progressive rock.

The likes of Steve Hackett, Francis Dunnery, John Mitchell, Nick Barrett and Gavin Harrison all add their redoubtable skills and Reed has pushed the envelope still further to acquire the services of vocal ensemble Synergy, the London Session Orchestra and the English Chamber Choir.

But the real genius was the selection of Steve Balsamo, most noted for his performance in Jesus Christ Superstar in the mid-1990s, as vocalist for the project – he surely crystallized everything Reed was hoping to achieve.

And what an achievement it is.

Essentially the story of Connor MacGregor, a man from the south of Ireland in the 1900s who went missing following the death of his child and the suicide of his wife, ‘Beneath The Waves’ is, despite its somewhat morbid subject matter, one of the most uplifting pieces of music you are likely to hear.

And I use the word ‘piece’ advisedly for that’s what it is. This is not a body of work you can dip into, it demands to be heard in its entirety from the spoken intro of  ‘Exordium’ to the spoken outro of ‘Reunion’.

The music itself is an interesting fusion of Celtic, folk, classic and progressive rock with side orders of opera, oratorio and even Latin and African chanting.

That the whole thing comes together is testament to the dedication and downright musical skill of its composer Rob Reed, who, looking at the visual material on the bonus DVD, must have been totally wrung-out when the whole project was finished.

It’s almost fatuous to pick a highlight among all this magnificence but the duet of Steve Hackett on nylon guitar and debut female vocalist Angharad Brinn on ‘Lilly’ is simply jaw-dropping.

To put the tin hat on things, the album comes in sumptuous packaging designed by Geoff Taylor (the artist responsible for Jeff Wayne’s ‘War Of The Worlds’ cover) and includes a twenty-page booklet with the newspaper story that inspired the project, the libretto (written by Rob’s brother, Steve) and short histories of the musicians involved.

In an era of diposable music and transient ‘talent’ show wannabes, ‘Beneath The Waves’ will live long in the memory as not only an iconic album but also one of those precious moments when you realise just why you love music in the first place.

Interview with Lee Hutchings: director of the upcoming Cozy Powell DVD

Lee Hutchings is the director of the upcoming “Dance With The Devil: The Cozy Powell Story”, and he has been working on this along with producer Andrew Fawn. This documentary will feature exclusive and extensive interviews with family, friends, work associates and fans, in-between various archive footage and with a ‘killer’ soundtrack.

It will be an in-depth and personal account of the man who, from humble beginnings, would go on to play an essential part in British and American rock drumming by playing in and alongside multiple bands and solo artists including Jeff Beck, Rainbow, Whitesnake, Black Sabbath and Brian May, as well as his own solo recordings including his signature instrumental “Dance With The Devil”, up until his tragic death in 1998. Here we catch-up with Lee plus ask a few well known Cozy fans for their picks of his music…

Facebook page

Q: What was the first piece of music you heard featuring Cozy Powell?

A: I suppose the first time I heard Cozy Powell was on the Rainbow track “Since You’ve been Gone” as a child, but ironically never knew it was him until I started to research for “Dance With The Devil: The Cozy Powell Story”. Once I knew it was Cozy powering such an iconic track I was immediately delighted that Cozy had been part of my childhood without knowing it.

Q: What sets Cozy apart from other drummers in your view?

A: There are many reasons for why I think Cozy stands apart from his contemporaries – the first being his style of playing, which was powerful, rock solid and energetic, but equally musically, dynamic and tasteful. That’s not to say there weren’t other drummers at that time who had a similar style and technique, i.e. John Bonham, but unlike Bonham Cozy was able to incorporate his own feeling and abilities into whatever he played whether it be rock, funk, soul, or blues.

This is clearly evident in Cozy’s double bass drum technique. Again, there were other contemporaries of Cozy who used double bass drum, with the exception of Bonham, but what made Cozy stand out was his superior understanding of when use them, unlike some who would use them to simply show off or overkill the music, Cozy would normally only did so when it was called for it to further better and drive the song. A great example of Cozy’s double bass drum brilliance is on both the record and live versions of Rainbow’s “Kill The King”.

The second point is, again unlike his contemporaries, Cozy was a workman musician. He was a drummer and individual who couldn’t seem to settle down for too long with one particular artist or band. Of course there were the odd exceptions, Rainbow and Black Sabbath, but this enabled Cozy to shift from music style and genre with ease and allowed him to demonstrate and expand his drumming skills.

Consider if Cozy had only been a one band drummer. It would be terrible to think of Cozy never have played and collaborated with such other artists as the Michael Shenkar Group, Emerson, Lake and Powell and Jeff Beck, and that’s not including those who he worked with as a credited session musican.

Thirdly, and tying in with point two, Cozy was one of the few drummers in music history to try, and I argue succeed, in bringing the drums further awareness and recognition to the public with his string of solo bands, hit singles – such as the iconic “Dance With The Devil” and “Na, Na, Na” – and solo albums.

With the exception of Sandy Nelson, one of Cozy’s heroes, and Phil Collins, there haven’t been many other drummers in popular music who have had success purely as a drummer in his own right, rather than just being a drummer with a particular band or artist.

And my fourth, and final, point is when comparing Cozy Powell to John Bonham, Keith Moon, Ian Paice, Ginger Baker, Mitch Mitchell or Ringo Starr, what do we really know about Cozy? To be honest, not much.

Yes we know he had a love of fast cars and motorbikes, but generally not much else is known about him privately as a person. For example, What was Cozy’s childhood like? What were his dreams, ambitions and goals? Who did Cozy like, dislike and why? These are a few of the questions we are seeking to answer by making “Dance With The Devil: The Cozy Powell Story”, and in addition will show what an incredible life Cozy had. One that was a classic rage to riches story, a tale of triumph over adversity. But unlike other similar stories, this one has a tragic ending.

Q: Where did the idea come for the documentary? How long will it be and will it be a DVD release only or perhaps get a showing at selected rock festivals?

A: The idea for making “Dance With The Devil” was from realising that there were no official accounts of Cozy Powell’s life or work. There were, and still are, no official biographies or documentaries and I thought “Why?” So I decided to change that by wanting to make the first and definitive account and testimonial of Cozy’s life and work, featuring those who knew and worked with him.

Regarding running times at present we are looking at a 90 – 100 minutes running time, although once in post-production this may change accordingly, and our intention is to obtain maximum saturation by screening the film at multiple national and international festivals, having cinematic and Television distribution, as well as internet downloading and DVD and Blu-Ray releases. Basically, the more people who can watch our documentary the better!

Q: Have Cozy’s estate been involved in the documentary at all?

A: No. Unfortunately when we, I and Producer Andrew Fawn, began researching for “Dance With The Devil” we were quick to discover that Cozy, through one reason or another, didn’t appear to have an estate or representative available. This naturally disheartened us but we were lucky to then hear from Cozy’s agent Brenda Brooker, who has since been our official Cozy representative and contact, and who has continued to offer support and advice.

Q: Who was the first musician to sign up to the documentary? Ideally who is also on your ‘wish list ‘ to feature?

A: The first musician we were able to sign up and interview was UFO, Whitesnake and Cozy Powell’s Hammer guitarist Bernie Marsden. Bernie has been wonderful in offering us insights into his and Cozy’s close and personal relationship, both as friends and musicians. Having been inspired by Bernie’s time and generosity with us, we now wish to further interview as many fellow musicians and friends of Cozy’s as possible including Jeff Beck, Tony Iommi, Jack Bruce, Robert Plant, Michael Shenker, Brian May and Roger Daltry to name a few, alongside Cozy fans such as Lars Ulrich of Metallica and Nicko McBrain of Iron Maiden.

Q: Who else have you got lined up for the documentary interview wise?

A: For the documentary we have so far secured for interview, Emerson, Lake and Palmer/Powell’s Keith Emerson, drummer Bobby Rondinelli – Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult – and Deep Purple’s Roger Glover, but are quickly gathering interest from the rock community and are hoping those from our wish list will be willing to participate in further interviews.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WogB0Pn0xLg&feature=youtu.be

Q: How easy/hard has it been to get access to archive footage? Will the documentary feature any rare footage at all?

A: Generally it is has been hard to gain access to acrchive footage, as there’s so much featuring Cozy, and with so much footage and music needed we as film makers have to respect the laws governing use of licensed footage and music. That said, we have made contacts with a few of those who can provide us with various clips, tracks, and pictures to use, and are also fortunate to have available to us rare footage from one of our interviewees, so we are hopeful and excited to use these to provide insight into Cozy’s story.

Q: With a project like this how did you go about funding it? Is this something that could work on Pledge Music?

A: As with all independent projects funding is very difficult because all film makers, understandably, want funding to their make projects and apply to the same, or similar funding schemes limiting the chances of obtaining that funding. An even harder achievement when considering the current budget cuts to the arts, so I decided that for at least the “Dance With The Devil” promotional video – which we hope to use to further support and financial interest for the feature, that I would use my own income to make this. That way, I know we would get the promo made and seen.

Now with the feature we are having to re-think our approach as, of course, features are a lot longer than shorts both in running times and days needed to make, and so need greater financial commitment which unfortunately I can’t provide which is why schemes such as Pledge Music, as well as other similar sites, are hugely beneficial and critical to the success and completion of independent film and story telling.

We will most definitely be using these sites to help fund “Dance With The Devil: The Cozy Powell Story” as it’ll mean fans of Cozy and fans of rock music, as well as fans of good documentary, will have the opportunity to contribute to a unique, exciting, and more importantly original project such as ours.

Q: Have you seen Cozy’s influence on any modern drummers?

A: Yes. Cozy’s influence can be seen far and wide in the rock community including drummers such as Lars Ulrich from Metallica – who has been stated as saying he is a huge fan of Rainbow and saw them when he was young – and generally those who play hard rock with double bass drums.

Like Ginger Baker in the 60’s, Cozy was the must see player in the 70’s, and beyond, when regarding double bass drum playing and how he used them, and what he achieved with them, have gone on to further inspire those to try and emulate his gifted and unique abilities. To quote Bernie Marsden, “I’ve played with a lot of players who think they play like him, but believe me, there was only one Cozy”. Enough said.

We ask a few Cozy Powell fans the first Cozy song they heard and what made them become a fan; favourite Cozy songs he plays on and any gigs they saw him perform at.

1st Cozy song…would have to be off the ‘Rising’ LP or ‘ON stage’…most likely heard @ 1812 overture or Peaches or Radio Doctors record store or saw a review/ad in ‘Circus’ magazine. I was still in school then. Cover would have sold me even without hearing it :)

Fave albums & songs…Rainbow ‘On Stage’ – ‘Light in the Black’/’Stargazer’
‘Over the Top’ – solo (theme 1 & loner)
Michael Schenker Group ‘On & On’
Whitesnake ‘Slide It In’
Black Sabbath ‘Headless Cross’ – ‘Headless Cross’ & ‘Devil A Daughter’
Black Sabbath ‘Tyr’ – ‘Jerusalem’ & ‘Law Maker’
Gigs…Michael Schenker Group – Dec 1980- Milwaukee, Wi (they opened for Molly Hatchet!!!) very sad…
Whitesnake- 1984 – Milwaukee, Wi
Brian May- 1993- Vic Theater- Chicago, Il
Brian May 1993- Modjeska Theater, Milwaukee, WI…after show was cancelled as Brian was ill but we had caught up @ the Hyatt for drinks & then Italian restaurant. My work – Radio Doctors – was across the street from the Hyatt  Black Sabbath – July 8,1995- Alpine Valley, WI

Rob Fodder:

Probably first heard Cozy on ‘Dance with the Devil’, but it has to be the whole of the Rainbow ‘Rising’ album that stick out in my mind. So many fantastic songs that highlight Cozy’s drumming, but especially ‘Light in the Black’, ‘Tarot Woman’ and ‘Stargazer’.

First time I saw Cozy was in November 77 with Rainbow. That amazing 1812 the end. Fantastic! Bombastic even!

Joe Geesin:

I’d have to say my immediate choices are Rainbow ‘A Light In The Black’, ‘Rainbow Kill The King’, Whitesnake 1983 drum solo that combined ‘633 Squadron’ with ‘1812’, ‘Slide It In’ LP, ELP ‘The Score’, ELP ‘Mars’, Rainbow ‘Eyes Of The World’, Graham Bonnet’s ‘Line Up’ LP, ‘Over The Top’ solo album.

Album review: NEAL MORSE – Live Momentum

Inside Out (2DVD/3CD & BluRay) [Release date: 18.02.13]

This is a real treat for fans of Neal Morse’s work and I am sure the inlay booklets/packaging will be suitably splendid as I only have promo copies of the two DVD discs.

The band consists of Neal Morse plus his long time musical companion’s bassist Randy George and former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy. Joining them are the three lucky musicals chosen by Neal through YouTube auditions, namely Adson Sodre (guitar/vocals), Eric Gillette (keys/guitar/percussion/vocals) and Bill Haubauer (keys/sax/violin/vocals).

The set list covers most of his musical past and present, with an undoubted highlight being the band ripping through the Spock’s Beard classic ‘The Distance To The Sun’. The vocal harmonies on this and throughout the set are truly a delight to listen to.

A couple of albums get a ‘meagmix’ treatment with the ‘Testimony Suite’ including ‘Sleeping Jesus’ and ‘Wasted Life’, whilst the ‘Question mark Suite’ includes ‘Another World’ and ‘Inside His Presence’.

Personal highlights include ‘Weathering Sky’ which sounds even better live and ‘the aforementioned ‘Testimony Suite’. The show is all about the music and musicians as there is no big stage lighting show and that is how it shoudl be as the music does the talking. They even through in a fun cover of the Osmonds classic ‘Crazy Horses’ with Mike Portnoy taking the mic and Neal Morse on drums.

The second DVD has a one hour bonus in the shape of a tour documentary that includes fan shot footage of the live shows.

This is a great idea and although the sound and picture quality can vary it does break down the fan and artist barriers nicely. In between this are backstage shots of the band warming up before a show and the band captured very early one morning at the airport. Only Neal Morse comes across as fresh and ready for the day ahead!

Definitely a ‘must have’ for fans and a decent introduction to Neal Morse’s for those yet to hear any of his wonderful music.

Interview: Gavin Butler from THE BLACKOUT

In these times of double dip depressions, rising unemployment and a bleak outlook it is good to know that the Blackout are out striving to cheer up the nation.

Having just released their latest album ‘Start The Party’, which is a collection of the bounciest songs known to man, the guys have embarked on a low key nationwide tour to bring the party to the masses. I caught up with the band on their Edinburgh date and got the low down on the album and more from frontman Gavin Butler –

DW -  I am in the Liquid Rooms in Edinburgh and have been joined by Gavin Butler from The Blackout, how are you ?

GB – I’m very good, thanks.

DW – You are back on tour once more and the start of the tour has coincided with some Arctic weather, has the snow caused any issues so far ?

GB – Our first show was planned to be in Bridgend but that got cancelled by the promoters as they had shut the M4 into Bridgend and no one could get in or out . There was some snow in Newcastle last night and some of the kids couldn’t get to the show, but not as disastrous as Bridgend.

DW – I believe the Bridgend date has been rescheduled.

GB – Yeah. We have two days off at the end of the tour then we play the rescheduled show.

DW – In true Blackout style you have started the tour off quietly with three shows in two days! How did the matinee show go in Glasgow ?

GB – Hard work [laughs]. We haven’t played a show since October, so the first shows back were the two in one day which hasn’t done my throat any good, I’m suffering terribly at the moment. The Glasgow night show has been the best of the tour so far, hard work getting thrown in at the deep end.

DW – The main feature of this tour is the return to smaller venues, I it take it this was done on purpose to introduce the new album to the fans before moving to the bigger scale ?

GB – Yeah. With the new album coming out when it did and the tour coinciding with it ,it was better to do the smaller venues. It is cool to do smaller venues, with people in your face and see the sweat hopefully if everyone warms up enough [laughs].

DW – The new album is obviously the main feature of the tour. It was released yesterday and I have been lucky enough to have a listen to it for a couple of weeks. A fantastic album, are you happy with the results ?

GB – It’s strange as we had the finished album back in June maybe, so we have been sitting on it for six months so it doesn’t feel that new to us anymore.  It’s good just to get it out there now and the response has been phenomenal.

It’s always strange with a new album, especially with Start The Party which is not so much a direction change than something different in certain places. I think though that everyone has got what we were going for, unashamed party anthemic rock songs really, that are not too complicated or deep.

DW  - Was this a conscious move after the last album’ Hope’ where some of the tracks were ‘deeper’ as you say ?

GB – Not so much conscious move. We returned from the ‘Hope’ tour and with that whole record being recorded when we were unsure even if we had a record label to get the record out.

We were just buzzing and were in such a positive mind frame as it was a massive flip turn for us that we thought, although we didn’t need to write an album for six months, instead of sitting around for six months we would just get together and do some songs. Once we started with Start The Party we just went with it and it stands as it is today.

DW – Listening to the album I think it is a record that the world needs at the moment, just unadulterated fun.

GB – That was another reason, other bands are writing about how shit the world is today, which it is in fairness. It is nice though to have a bit of escapism for a while.

DW – You had planned to do signing sessions on tour which were going to be in HMV stores, but they were announced the day before the demise of HMV was announced, not that I am blaming The Blackout for that [laughs].

Where does a band like The Blackout stand on losing the likes of HMV who are the last big High St retailer for CD’s and the like, is it a major blow for you ?

GB – I can’t remember the actual figure but someone in our camp said that HMV count for around 20% of our physical album sales which is a big amount and that’s just my band.

Then again people are saying ‘I can’t believe HMV are going’ but at the same token they were probably responsible for countless independent record stores going under. If anything, this may give independents more of a chance if they are the only places selling CD’s and there is a move back to vinyl so they are not quite dead yet.

DW – The first two tracks released from Start The Party, the title track and Running Scared, had videos filmed in Ibiza. Was this the band’s decision to go there or the record company’s ?

GB – [laughs] It was totally our decision. The video for Start The Party starts in my garage on a freezing cold day acting out what was done and although we have loved all the videos we have done, but doing them is another thing.

One was in a field getting the back of our legs burnt by fire and another was in a warehouse in Bolton in freezing water all day in your clothes. With the vibe of the album we thought let’s go somewhere we can have a massive house party, someone suggested LA but we contacted Pritchard, who is here today, who organises boat parties in Ibiza. We managed to sell it to the record label who said as long as you shoot two at the same time we could do it, which sounded like a fair deal.

DW – Whilst doing some research for today I was surprised to find out that 2013 is the band’s tenth anniversary. Did you ever expect to get this far ?

GB – We didn’t expect to be signed to a label at all. We started out as something to do, pretty much, we saw a bunch of other people doing it and thought ‘we could do that’. We all love music, singing and playing guitars and stuff but we never set out to make a career from it we just set out as a hobby, something we love to do.

It’s weird looking back at some of the things we have achieved, playing with some of our idols and meeting most of the rest. Literally the phrase ‘living the dream’ does come to mind.

DW – The first Time I saw the band was a couple of years ago supporting My Chemical Romance in the SECC in Glasgow. What impressed me most that night was how quickly you won over the crowd which I put down to the band’s on stage rapport. When you are on stage is it something you set out to do, to have that rapport, or is it just a bunch of friends having a lark ?

GB – You have got to try and connect with the audience, as clichéd and arty farty as that sounds, but you do have to grab their attention especially on shows like that where those kids aren’t there to see you at all. I think it’s something we find easy to do, with Sean he is one of these personalities that people love to hate or love to love. He is not afraid to say what he wants to get people’s attention. It would be weird to go on stage and play an entire set without talking to the crowd.

DW – After this tour you are heading out in Europe with Yellowcard I believe and after that you are heading to Australia for the Soundwave festivals. How did that come about ?

GB – We played it two years ago. The guy who runs Soundwave, AJ, is a massive Liverpool  fan as is Snoz our drummer and the two of them got talking on Twitter. I wouldn’t want to say that was the reason, a love of Liverpool [laughs]. It is an amazing tour and to get asked to go back again is great. It is like Reading and Leeds but in four different cities and it doesn’t rain! We get four or five days off as well to go surfing and stuff which is great.

DW – After that what are the plans for the rest of the year, more festival plans ?

GB – At the moment our booking agent is travelling the world, by the sounds of it, living it up on his cut of our money [laughs]. He is back next week and will start looking at our festival runs and sorting things out, but nothing confirmed at the moment but we would like to play as many as we can.

DW – Do you have any final messages for your fans for the rest of the year ?

GB – Just check out the album if you haven’t already and if you have, thank you very much!

DW – Thanks very much for talking to us and hope all goes well with the tour and the album.

GB – Thanks, no worries.

Album review: TOMMY EMMANUEL & MARTIN TAYLOR – The Colonel And The Governor

Mesa/Bluemoon Records [Release Date 4.3.2013]

So, what happens when you put together one of the finest jazz guitarists in the world with one of the greatest finger-style fretmeisters around?

Well the answer is…. not quite what you would think.

Martin Taylor is, without doubt, the foremost jazz guitarist of his generation and his previous collaborations with the likes of Martin Carthy et al on ‘Martins 4’ and Gordon Giltrap have been wonderful displays of six-string virtuosity coupled with a varied palette of genres.

Tommy Emmanuel is also a fabulously gifted and technically brilliant acoustic guitarist whose live shows play to packed audiences throughout the world.

So you would expect that when the two of them got together it would be a case of ‘light the blue touch-paper and retire’.

Well it doesn’t quite work out that way.

The album’s title gives the game away a little – ‘The Colonel and The Governor’ suggesting a smug-fest delivered by egos of gargantuan proportions.

And whilst this couldn’t be further from the truth in reality (I’ve seen them both perform and they’re top blokes), the distinct impression that comes across is a scene from The Fast Show’s ‘Jazz Club’ where the musicians, introduced by the laid-back Louis Balfour (“nice”), smile and nod to each other, consumed by their own brilliance.

You can even hear the odd “yeah”, “oooh Tommy” and “uh-huh” in the background.

Although the guitar playing is absolutely brilliant, the fourteen tracks tend to blend together into an amorphous soup of jazz-lite work-outs that members of the flotation tank set would relax to rather than the challenging, edgy, out-there material that these guys are definitely more than capable of.

It has its moments – the beautiful ‘One Day’, the cod-reggae of ‘Down At Cocomo’s’, the melancholia of ‘The Fair Haired Child’ and the technically brilliant ‘Secret Love’ are all stand-outs – but it is significant that these tracks are where they wrestle themselves free from the straitjacket of ‘lounge jazz’.

For lovers of jazz guitar this is probably a must-have, for the rest of us the overwhelming feeling is one of a missed opportunity.

If there is a next time they should give safety the swerve and take a few risks.

I think then Louis Balfour would give it a “great”…

THE BRONX – The Bronx IV

ATO/ White Drugs ( Release date – out now)

It has been five years since the last Bronx album. During the intervening period the band have been far from idle, touring constantly and releasing an album under their alter ego, Mariachi El Bronx. So has the wait been worth it?

As soon as the opening number ‘The Unholy Hand’ kicks in it is apparent that the band are still as angry and pissed off with the world as they were five years ago. The song is a classy piece of hardcore played with The Bronx usual keen sense of melody.

Another factor that is evident from the off and continues throughout the album is the change in vocal delivery from frontman Matt Caughthran. On previous albums Matt has tended to spit out his lyrics in a quickfire, hardcore tirade, but on this album he has toned that down for the most part and tends to sing more. I had read prior to hearing the album that his vocal confidence had been boosted by his Mariachi performances and on listening to the disc you can definitely hear the change which is all the better in my view.

The one thing though that sets The Bronx apart from other bands in their genre is their songwriting ability. The guys are capable of writing tracks that are angst ridden and carry a strong social message, but they all have hooks that will stick in your head for days. You only have to play ‘Along For The Ride’, ‘Torches’ or ‘Ribcage’ as evidence of this. Anyone familiar with the band’s Mariachi output will be well aware that the guys are capable of musicianship of the highest calibre.

I would understand though if there are a few dissenting voices from diehard fans as there is a definite softening on certain tracks on the album. The song ‘Life Less Ordinary’ is a good case in point, it features just Matt’s vocal and Joby Ford on guitar and is as close to a ballad as the band could hope to get without fans crying ‘sell out’. For me though what The Bronx have achieved on this release is to take their hardcore roots and blend them with all they have learned when touring in both their guises over the last five years to great effect.

As always The Bronx continue to develop their own sound, break down established barriers and refuse to conform to what people expect them to be. Like a fine wine the band continue to mature nicely, but they can still kick like a mule when uncorked. It will take something very special to remove this from my top spot come the end of the year lists.

Singles reviews: MARIA JORDAN, CHARLIE WINSTON,STEEL THREADS

MARIA JORDAN – What You Gonna Do (Released 25th February) www.mariajordan.com/

Second single to come across my musical radar from Maria Jordan and like the last one, the rather good ‘Better Than Nothing’, this new song ‘What You Gonna Do’ is another glorious light country meets pop. She has had success on the US country charts but her appeal is much wider and this song is not unlike something you could see Taylor Swift recording. A definite name to watch out for. ****1/2

CHARLIE WINSTON – Where Can I Buy Happiness www.charliewinston.com

The lead single taken of his third album ‘Running Still’ and he comes from a family of musicians as his parents were a 1960′s folk duo. This is a breezy little number, strong lyric and a nice backbeat of drums/percussion and programmed beats. This does what a single should do have you expecting the album eagerly and more wonderful sounds. ****1/2

Review by Jason Ritchie

Steel Threads – At The Start Again

English ‘power-folk’ band Steel Threads (Neil Wardleworth – guitars / vocals, Stuart Eastham, and Laura Wilcockson – fiddle / vocals) have done a remarkable job on their latest single in taking the Jon Bon Jovi Wanted Dead Or Alive template and recasting it.  Everything’s there from the acoustic, to the JBJ vocals, and the slow burn.  An engaging crowd pleaser, but hardly original.  ***

Review by Pete Whalley

Miss Terry Blue – Hush

A multinational group from Germany, Italy, Russia and the UK fronted by vocalist Isabella Lueen, Miss Terry Blues debut single serves up an infectious mix of pop, funk, and soul with a strong vocal performance that would sit more than comfortably on the latest long player by Paloma Faith.  But something stronger (and more original) may be needed to make that all important breakthrough.  ***

Review by Pete Whalley

Mooli – Love Hurts

Vocalist Kristina Smith writer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Ben Copeland have dug out some old synths and travelled back to the late 1970s to produce a single that revisits the classic sound of The Human League, Soft Cell and Heaven 17.  Derivative, and somewhat time warped, but apparently popular on the dance scene.  **1/2

Review by Pete Whalley

Hoda Mohajerani – Raging Waves

Iran / British singer, songwriter, guitarist Hoda has taken it back to the early eighties with a single that echoes back to the heydays of Hazel O’Connor and Lene lovich.  It almost works but lacks that ‘extra something’ like the Eighth Day sax break.  Too derivative for my liking.  **1/2

Interview: 10Q’s with PETE MORTEN (MY SOLILOQUY/THRESHOLD)

Pete Morten is a busy man as My Soliloquy release their debut album ‘The Interpreter’ plus he will be out on tour soon with Threshold

1. What are you currently up to?

I’m currently rehearsing for the Threshold European Tour, looking forward to that. I think Karl (Groom) plans on starting work on the next Threshold record too in the summer, so I’ve got a few riffs I’m working on.

Outside of my Threshold commitments, I’m busy preparing for My Soliloquy rehearsals that take place in April, as soon as I return home from touring. I’ve also started writing for the next My Soliloquy album too, and have about six songs at various stages of development.

I’m also currently making an album with a band called Nightmare World who I’ve been singing with since 2007, and we have one E.P. out already. I have just one more song to sing, and then we’re pretty much ready for mixing. It’s going to be a great record.

And yes there’s more, I may be recording a promo track with another band I front called Metalloid, whom I’ve played over 60 shows with.

Sadly we have nothing recorded yet, so we’re hoping to address that with this promo.

2. On this album, bar the drums, you play everything yourself. Did you ever consider recording it as a band or was it a case of you knew what music you wanted to record? How did Rob Aubery become involved in the production side?

The E.P. I recording in 2007 was done the same way. I did everything and Damon did the drums. In early 2006 I’d decided to part ways with the then current lineup due to complications within the band at the time. So I had to do what was needed, and go it alone.

So really, MS has been just me and the drummer for 6 years. I felt really confident that I could not only write everything myself but also play everything bar the drums, so  when it came to the album, I wanted to approach it in the same way. I never once considered getting a full band back together, as I was very keen to sidestep all that group decision making or indecision as the case often is.

I have a very strong sense and feeling for what any given song I might be working on needs, so trying to be a democracy all the time when it comes to writing actually slows everything up and can make the process very tiresome and strained.

I originally asked Karl Groom if he was free to produce the album, but I think he was busy with Dragon Force at the time, so the studio was fully booked. But he turned me on to Rob Aubrey, who is obviously a producer of the same calibre. Working with Rob was a real pleasure. Great producer.

3. Could you take us through the new album ‘The Interpreter’? (e.g. ideas behind the songs etc)

I consider this record to be very much an album in the truest meaning of the word ‘album’.  Like a photo album is a collection of memories, and so

‘The Interpreter’ assumes a literal meaning.  Every song is a memory of an event in my life since I started this band 10 years ago, thus I have become ‘The Interpreter’ of those events for the listener.

Even when I was doing the artwork, I wanted to reinforce that concept, to create this fictional future where everyone can repeatedly revisit past events in their lives by hooking up to their very own user registered Interpretation Interface, which is what the machine is. It affords the user to watch their memories like movies.

Regarding actual songs, I cover spirituality, reincarnation, love, both in an obvious sense and in a universal sense, loss, insecurity, and the human condition and war.

4. How did the touring line-up come together and if all goes well would they appear on the next album?

Well to get back to me going it alone in 2006, some of the guys that were in the band now were originally in it then. I simply just asked them if they wanted to be involved in the live shows again. The only exception to that rule is the Bass Player who is a completely new addition. I played a few shows with him back in 2009 in another band.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YK5wTTWuwfs

5. Your vocals are not the usual high pitched ones you often get in progressive metal bands. How did you develop your vocal style and who are your influences?

Vocally my main influences kinda centre around three singers, Morten Harket of A-ha, James LaBrie of Dream Theater, and Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden. The album uses all my range, and there is a lot of high register singing on there, but I’m not afraid to use my lower registers if it’s right for the passage.

I’m certainly not one of these singers who thinks that the only way to express himself is through only singing high.

My Soliloquy is all about dynamic, and will never be about a band who just offer the same emotion in every song, the very idea of that just sounds dreadful to me.

I also had some vocal training around 2005/2006 with an excellent vocal coach.

6. When you formed My Soliloquy what sort of musical vision did you have for the band?

To write original music, end of. I love Dream Theater, but what I noticed was that all the bands that came out after DT, all sounding like DT ha ha.

And I remember thinking, why do these bands all sound the same ha ha. The rare exception to that is probably Pain of Salvation, who are truly original.

So anyway, I obviously have nods to the mighty  DT in my music, but it’s very much delivered in my own unique way of song writing and is very subtle.

Prog fans may hear this album and say where are all the 5 minuet solo’s and 15 minute songs ha ha.

But I’d argue all those elements are there. There are plenty of clever uses of odd signatures in the music, but it’s not over baring and dominating,

it’s used subtly. And the solo’s in Inner Circles, Flash Point and Fractured are all very inventive and challenging to play.

I think my strengths as a song writer lie in being clever with arrangements for the sake of the song, not for the sake of just being clever.

7. You briefly fronted Power Quest. What was it like switching from guitar to being the main onstage focus of a band? How did you come to leave the band?

Well when I joined PQ for those three tours in 2009/early 2010, I’d already had 8 years experience of being the front man with My Soliloquy, Nightmare World and Metalloid combined, so it wasn’t like all of a sudden I was the singer and didn’t know what I was doing.

Rather, looking back, I realise that I took too much on. I was in the thick of the MS album, had lots of work on as a freelance graphic designer, and was also preparing for a Threshold Tour.  I remember specifically doing the PQ UK tour with MSG and then going directly into a Threshold EU tour. I gave my all at PQ shows, but I knew I truly wasn’t there in spirit and heart.

I feel bad about that for Steve, but  I guess you live and learn right. I knew I wasn’t right for the band, but I am forever grateful for the experience, and we had some fun.

8. Threshold are headlining one night of the Celebr8.2 festival. Do the band adapt their set much for a festival given that all the audience may not be familiar with the band’s music?

Not really, I don’t think we do things differently for festivals verses our own shows. If we only have a short set, which has happened at some festivals in Europe, we might swap more of the longer songs for shorter songs, but that’s about it really. I think all the material is so strong and inclusive of that Threshold signature sound, that quite frankly anything we play will be a great representation of the band. Even the uninitiated can get a very clear idea of what the band is about in any given song.

9. You became a full time member of Threshold last year with the ‘March Of Progress’ album. Did you have much input into that album?

Correction, I became a full time member sometime around 2009 I think ha ha, although the actual conversation of..”Pete welcome to the band” never actually happened, it was more unspoken, more of a feeling. I’ve been eager to just get stuck in and write for the band since 2009 really. It’s going to feel very good indeed to go out with those guys and support an album that I’m actually on, rather than just being the ‘new guy’, the ‘hired gun’.

I wrote two songs for March of Progress and a bunch of solos. The songs Coda and Divinity were written by me, and I just presented the songs to the guys, thankfully they thought they were good enough for the record. Regarding the other songs, I really just wrote a few solo’s for them, as the tracks were already fully realised by Karl and Rich before I got to them.

10. What do all enjoy doing in your spare time away from music?

I love movies, and get very moved by film. Strangely I get more out of watching a great film rather than music. Yea I know that’s weird.

I also love cycling, reading and collecting Transformers, specifically G1.

Album Review: ERIC JOHNSON – Up Close Another Look

Eric Johnson - Up Close Another Look

Mascot Records [Release date 01.04.13]

Whilst I have always been aware of Eric Johnson and his influence on a whole raft of modern guitarists I have never really investigated his music.  ‘Up Close – Another Look’ should change all that.  For the European edition ahead of an April UK tour Eric has revisited and remixed his sixth studio album released originally in 2010.

Johnson made a short sortie to these isles in 2012 which hopefully now looks the start of something more frequent, and I am sure I won’t be alone in catching up with his back catalogue as a result.  I enjoyed his previous studio album, in 2005, called ‘Bloom’,  but that wasn’t enough to make me trundle through Amazon, digits poised.  This latest offering is.  Starting no doubt with 1990′s ‘Ah Via Musicom’.

Most of all ‘Up Close’ is characterised with Johnson’s wonderful, authoritative guitar tone, a style and approach that has influenced artists from Bonamassa to Johnny Winter and won all sorts of accolades.

The album, though, is also full of good songs and a healthy mix of vocal and instrumental.  If vocally Johnson sometimes canters off to AOR/West Coast territory (‘Arithmetic’, ‘A Change Has Come To Me’), the album always retains focus and contains some of the most splendid guitaring I’ve heard.  Several tracks feature different vocalists including Steve Miller on the bluesy ‘Texas’.

If you thought Johnson’s music, while technically proficient. was a tad bland – listen up – for ‘Up Close’ puts him right up there with the Satches and the Lukes of this world, artists who are at the top of the game and continue to produce consistently good and accessible albums into their advancing years.

Want  further confirmation?  Just listen to ‘Fatdaddy’, with its urgent fusion vibe,  ‘Brilliant Room’ with an infectious commercialty, the darker and broody ‘Soul Surprise’, and the sensational ‘Gem’, the best guitar melody you’ll hear this year.

An album that should appeal to guitar-heads as well as those of gentler persuasion who just want to luxuriate in top class musicality, and a vibe that moves them. *****

Gig Review: Great British Rock & Blues Festival,Skegness 25-27 January 2013

Skegness hosts the first big rock festival of the year and it’s always an interesting mix of new and old.  And that’s just the audience.  Three days of rock and ruin, well maybe if you take excess to all areas.  But a great chance to wallow in unbridled nostalgia as well as stealing a peek at upcoming artists.

Of these, Jo Harman played an excellent acoustic set in Jaks on the Sunday afternoon, her version of Whitesnake’s ‘Ain’t No Love In the Heart Of The City’, was one of the highlights of the weekend.  And, for me, The Stumble were the discovery of the weekend.  This North-West based band specialise in Chicago-style R&B.

Colin Blunstone, 27 January 2013

Amongst the highlights,  Colin Blunstone‘s set oozed quality and with such a healthy songbook to plunder too, both his own and that of The Zombies.   John Coughlin’s Quo were excellent…playing vintage stuff like, ‘Juniors Wailing’, ‘In My Chair’ and ‘April, Spring, Summer and Wednesday’.   Perhaps a glimpse at the Frantic Four tour.

Focus - 25 January 2013

Thijs Van Leer and Focus pushed their latest album but not as much as the inevitable career highlights like ‘Hocus Pocus’ and ‘Sylvia’.  Not just a trip down memory lane, the band’s credentials are bolstered by original drummer Pierre van der Linden and the more youthful guitarist Menno Gootjes.

Oliver Dawson Saxon - 25 January 2013

Oliver Dawson Saxon,  perhaps cruelly forever  in the shadow of Biff, demonstrated raw heavy metal power with the twin guitar onslaught of Graham Oliver and Haydn Conway sounding as good as ever as they hammered out material from their new album ‘Motorbiker’ as well as the expected (and welcome) classics.

Curved Air - 26 January 2013

Curved Air impressed with the ever-lovely Sonja Kristina and an animated Paul Sax (violin) and the set pretty much followed their current ‘Live Atmosphere’ album but strangely the crowd had thinned out.

Eddie & The Hot Rods and Hawkwind supplied their usual high-voltage sets, the latter basking in the recent reissue of ‘Space Ritual’ and almost turning the clocks back to 1973 although their set was spiced with later classics like ‘Assault And Battery’ and ‘Hills Have Ears’.

Virgil And The Accelerators - 26 January 2013

Amongst the new crop of blues talent, The Mentulls deserve special mention with guitarist Andrew Pipe at times out Bonamassa-ing Bonamassa although work is perhaps needed in the image department.  Virgil And The Accelerators turned in a typical powerhouse performance evidently relishing the prospect of some juicy support slots with Uriah Heep and Michael Schenker this year.

Mitch Laddie also deserves special mention, another quality if slightly underrated act whilst Henrik Freischlader completed a strong ‘new blues’ contingent with some incendiary playing from his excellent album ‘House In The Woods’.

Erja Lyytinen - 27 January 2013

Perhaps the easiest on the eye, Finnish guitarist Erja Lyytinen also dazzled with tracks from her excellent new album ‘Forbidden Fruit’.  Either I need new rose-tinted specs or they have ramped (vamped?) things up for the new album cover.

Paul Jones - 27 January 2013

And then of course we had those hardy perennials The Blues Band showing lesser mortals (and ages) how it is to be still relevant with advancing years.  Paul Jones remains ever youthful and an articulate and passionate spokesman for the genre of R&B.

The Animals broke off from their current tour to remind us just how many hits they had in the sixties but of course they played second fiddle to the guitar colossus who is Steve Cropper and ‘Green Onions’ was as ever a highlight.  And Hundred Seventy Split, Ten Year’s After’s Leo Lyons  and Joe Gooch, were amazing with some of the best bass playing from Leo I have ever seen.

Stray - 26 January 2013

Those other hardy perennials Stray  under the ever genial stewardship of Del Bromham played another high energy set; Del always a natural and captivating live performer.

Dennis Dunaway - 27 January 2013

But perhaps the biggest delight of the weekend was the appearance of Blue Coupe, a grouping of  ex-Alice Cooper bassist and songsmith (Dennis Dunaway), and two ex-early Blue Oyster Cult:  the Bouchard brothers Joe and Albert.  This was classic rock at its finest with band originals mixed in with the expected classics like ‘Under My Wheels’ and ‘Godzilla’  The gig was part of the band’s wonderfully entitled ‘Hot Rails To Hull’ tour.

Altogether a great way to start the year, and always some surprises mixed with the more familiar, and a great showcase for new artists too.  Certainly the perfect antidote to snow, triple-dip recession and post-Christmas blues.  And the food and bed was top notch as well.

ALASTOR – Out Of Anger

Metal Mind Records (Release date – out now)

Polish thrashers, Alastor, have become something of a legend in their home country. Formed back in 1986 the band have had a mixed career, releasing four well received  albums . The band underwent a line up change in 2010 and this album is the first result from this change.

As you would expect from a band that have been together for 26 years Alastor know how to rock hard and heavy. This album though sounds fresh and up to date whilst retaining the elements of early thrash. The best comparison I can draw is with Machine Head, but in a more simplistic and straight forward form.

There are some outstanding tracks on the album, ‘Crawling’ and the brutal title track ‘Out Of Anger (In Your Face) ‘ being two of the best. One of the changes to the line up in 2010 was the departure of vocalist Robert Stankiewicz who was replaced by Mish Jarski who takes on all tracks with consummate ease, he has a great thrash voice with a hard edge.

It has been seven years since the band’s last release, but this album should see the guys re-establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with. The legend lives on…

Gig review: FAMILY – Shepherds Bush Empire, London – 2 February 2013

Family - London, 2 February 2013

Not just a reunion, more a polishing of the Family’s silver, ‘An Evening With Family’ proved what all die-hard fans always knew, Family made some timeless music.

And if the underlying question to this two night stand at the Shepherds Bush Empire was whether they could still cut it or not, any doubters were suitably kicked up the ass with a two sparkling performances that saw a splendid and expanded 9 piece ensemble (ie. Family plus the In-Laws) bring out the full melodic beauty and dynamic splendour of their back catalogue, via some stunning arrangements.

Family - London, 2 February 2013

Roger Chapman inevitably cut a pivotal figure, but it was also the sumptuous melodies, intricate playing and subtle dynamics that lingered in the mind, long after the closing notes of the third encore ‘Sweet Desire’.

Put simply, this was a triumphant return, which though markedly different from the past, brought real weight and substance to bear on some enduring material. Some of the songs were premier performances, while other stage favourites were imbued with an unexpected sprinkle of musical maturity.

The evening opened with some deep blues from Papa George and a glorious ramble from footie legend Frank Worthington, before the band slipped into the vibes led ‘Top of the Hill’.  They further reinvigorated themselves with a funky jammed out ‘Part of the Load’, the uplifting melody of ‘Ready To Go’ and the ascending, mesmerising sweep of ‘Burning Bridges’.

It was a reunion with a difference and while it was sad that Charlie Whitney passed up the opportunity to rejoin Chappo and cohorts, his music still rang out loud and clear. This was no more so than on the delicate ‘Between Blue & Me’, a song that was prefaced by Chappo calling out to his former partner.

Family - London, 2 February 2013

Then there was the transformation of Poli’s original fleeting instrumental ‘Crinkly Grin’, into something with symphonic presence, with doubled up vibes and sax lines, alongside Geoff Whitethorn’s precision guitar.

At the centre of all this glorious music stood the imposing figure of Roger Chapman, who having cut a restrained, if not ironic figure on the first night, was back to his belligerent self on the second.

His unique vibrato is more of a gargled growl nowadays, but his phrasing remains impeccable as he matched his lyrical brilliance on the unexpected big band swagger and beautiful horn refrain of ‘Sat’d’y Barfly’ and the thunderous rhythms of ‘Hung Up Down’.

Family - London, 2 February 2013

Rob Townsend was rock solid as ever, while vibes player Poli Palmer added light and shade with some delightful flurries on vibes.  Jim Cregan initially cut a musically peripheral figure, but soon matched his flamboyant stage apparel – or ‘gipsy gear’ as Rog would have it – with some deft acoustic guitar on ‘No Mules Fool’ and some trademark Whitney double neck guitar either side of the first encore.

The additional band members known as The In-Laws, included Nicky Payn who brought echoes of both Jim King and Poli’s early Family work with a colourful melange of tones on horns, harp, flute and percussion. His repertoire included a sax solo to replace the original vibes on the climactic ‘In My Own Time’.

The epic ‘The Weaver Answer’ was the perfect encore, followed ‘My Friend The Sun’, with its shared ‘call and response’ harmonies, leaving Roger to add a poignant roll call of past and present Family members on the cheery ‘Sweet Desiree’, to cap a truly memorable night.

DEVON ALLMAN – Turquoise

Ruf Records 1186 [Released Jan 2013]

Devon Allman’s star is on the rise. After touring relentlessly and cutting a brace of albums with his own band Honeytribe, he made a deserved critical breakthrough with the excellent Royal Southern Brotherhood. Now he’s quickly gone back in the studio to cut his first solo album and the result is a resounding triumph.

‘Turquoise’ is an album with a spiritual undercurrent that is topped and tailed by songs that deal with leaving home and the need to kick back outside of the demands of the industry that he’s committed to. Not that any of the music here suggests anything less that inspired lyrics, well crafted arrangements and great playing. Above all, ‘Turquoise’ achieves its aims of delivering a definitive Devon Allman solo album, full of signature songs, heartfelt lyrics and a variety of delightful guitar tones

Devon has spent a good part of his career eschewing the refracted glory of the Allman’s spotlight and this album tells you just why. He’s a fiercely independent character with an imposing baritone voice and a trademark guitar style showcased in a southern tinged style. He’s also musically adventurous being unafraid to explore Afro-Latino flourishes on ‘There’s No Time’ , and understated grooves such as ‘Don’t Set Me Free’  co penned with his long time buddy and fellow RSB band member Mike Zito.

Above all ‘Turquoise’ is an album that presentsDevonin his own terms. There’s no pandering to any preconceived expectations as he subtly meanders his way through deep fried grooves and ballads, southern tinged rock, acoustic elements and a magnificent duet with Samantha Fish on a cover of Petty ‘Stop Draggin My Heart’ complete with catchy ‘whoooo’ bv’s.  The band’s anchor track is ‘Homesick’ which was the first song written for the album and is a gentle reminder of his core family values outside the demands of a road hardened rocker.

Much lie one of his contemporaries JJ Grey, this album feels like a wind swept dip into the best of southern nuances with quality songs to match. The slide-led autobiographical ‘When I Left Home’ for example, is full of potent changes and sumptuous guitar parts, offset by Devon’s baritone and glistening harmonies on the chorus.

The Zito co-write ‘Don’t Set Me Free’ is a big sounding, mid -tempo arrangement full of jangling guitars, organ and emotive vocal, while ‘Time Machine’ is an absolute peach of a ballad. The tic-toc rhythm, cutting acoustic guitar, sparkling percussion and aching baritone all contribute to a meditative cool groove. It might even give him some deserved radio plays.

On the  Tyler Stokes co-penned ‘There’s No Time’ he explores some essential Afro/Carrib/Latino rhythms, and later returns to the same influences on the shimmering shuffle of ‘Key Lime Pie’, while ‘Strategy’ is a rehash of an old reshaped song with a contrasting sweeping vocal and delicately crafted solo

‘Into The Darkness’ is a sax led ode to his son with some great soulful phrasing and it sits well in a set full of songs that basically act as a running commentary of his life so far.

Devonopts for an almost low key, but rigorously focussed ending, with the acoustic instrumental ‘Yadira’s Lullaby’ evoking the late great John Fahey, while ‘Turn Off The World’ is a delicate end-piece worthy of its status as the closing track on an excellent album. It’s a song about recharging your batteries. Devonsings; ‘Let the salt water cleanse your soul, washing off all that rock & roll. You got slow down sometimes and turn off the world’. Never was such a poignant observation better made. ***** (5/5)

Album review: ERJA LYYTINEN – Forbidden Fruit

Ruf Records 1188 [Released Jan 2013]

Forbidden Fruit’ finds Finnish slide guitarist Erja Lyytinen taking the blues into the new territories, by delving into the personal realm to explore previously untapped musical ambitions. From the deeply felt lyrics and well crafted songs to the emotional input of her solos and expansive band harmonies, ‘Forbidden Fruit’ embodies the essence of everything we identify as the blues.

The lead track ‘Joyful Misery’ for example, is a superb co-write with Bonnie Raitt song writer Alan Darby. It has a lovely understated groove and a catchy melody, with great harmonies, a strong hook and an aching solo. It’s also a very radio friendly song as befits most of the album.

‘Forbidden Fruit’ is a multi layered affair. Peel away a layer and you will find another rich seam of lyrical meaning and intricate guitar parts. The heart felt lyrics, deep guitar tones and sonic textures are all glued together by Erja own natural vivacity.

‘Forbidden Fruit’ may not have the immediacy of some of her previous albums, but on this CD she draws from a deeper well, infusing old blues traditions – the art of story telling and sexual double entendre’s – with contemporary musical values and guitar solo’s that evoke lyrical meaning.

For every well crafted turn of phrase there’s an intricate guitar part to match, ranging from co-producer Davide Floreno’s tremolo guitar figure on ‘Joyful Misery’ to the slide-led, wall of sound on ‘Jealousy’. The radical arrangement and unusual chord structure of ‘Death Letter’ re-invigorate the blues standard and helps integrate it into the albums sequential flow. The Lyytinen/Floreno co-write ‘Change Of Season’ is a also a lovely ballad with a smouldering arrangement,  resonant solo and one of Erja’s very best vocal performances.

The poignant ‘Joyful Misery’ is inspired by a 50 year relationship between her uncle and aunt, while the title track pulls no lyrical punches;- ‘A flower in  blossom attracts all kind of bees’  – before she belatedly offers us a cathartic release with Lil Johnson’s ‘Press My Button’.

‘Forbidden Fruit’ avoids the usual clichés and as a result might be considered a slow burner, but the songs are rooted in real substance and the playing is a delight. Contemporary blues never sounded more essential.

10Q’s with Piotr Rogucki of COMA

Coma are a massively popular band in their native Poland and they aim to recreate that success elsewhere with the upcoming release of their new album ‘Don’t Set You Dogs On Me‘ plus a European tour including two dates in the UK in March. Over to  vocalist Piotr Rogucki

1. What are you currently up to?

To keep your stamina up you have to move on, this should be our motto, so we are trying to live this advice up. We play gigs in Poland all the time, about twenty shows are approaching in the next three months. We are gonna play two gigs in Great Britain as well, in London on 25th of April and on the next day in Manchester. Moreover, we’ve just finished writing songs for the new album and planning to hit the studio in March. What’s more, we are hoping to play a few festivals in the summer time, and it would be awesome to have luck with setting up a European tour in autumn. It appears to be an interesting and quite busy year.

2. Could you take us through the new album ‘Don’t Set Your Dogs On Me’…

‘Don’t Set Your Dogs on Me’ are not just a few various songs collected in one CD. The story is hidden behind the scenes. If you are a careful listener, you can observe the story of a poor soul. A kind of moral descent in the name of rebirth into the better existence. The main character is carrying the burden of crucial mental changes.

At the beginning of the story 1. “Keep the Peace” I’m trying to convince listeners that the revolutionary changes are needed, and providing them with the courage necessary to commence the journey together with the fictitious character. 2. “With You” is a little naive praise of an idea that shearing doubts with a beloved person is easier. Then 3. “Always Summer” we create the atmosphere of undefined longing in the adverse environment of winter in Warsaw, an element of concern shows up. After this introduction we are visiting the bottom of existence, sexual disorders in 4. “Dance With a Queen”, drugs abuse in 5. “Rainy Song”, narcotic trance and displaced anxiety in 6. “Late”, personal disaster, infidelity and empty anger in 7. “Lion” a breakdown with a beloved person in 8. “Furious Fate”, last attempt to retrieve the relationship in 9. “Don’t Set Your Dogs on Me” then denial and escape in 10. “Song 4 Boys” and 11.”Moscow” but also looking for the answer to what went wrong? Eventually the rebirth and decision to start again in 12. “A Better Man”. 13. ” When The Music Is A Flame” is our general ‘summing up’ of the story we presented and a kind of invitation to the world of our music. But this is just shortly.

3. You have made a great YouTube video for ‘With You’. Who came up with the idea for this and how important is it for a band now to have a YouTube video for any new single/album release?

The idea is taken straight from the photo session we’ve done with a very talented photographer Albert Pabijanek, he decided that we should be painted to get the effect of distance between us as private people and the message we share as a band. Since that moment we have been painting our faces for almost every concert to make our personality more transparent on the stage, and to make the show more theatrical. We used the same aesthetics making the video clip, it gives the feeling of coherence with the audience. Videos on YT are important, they are our last commentary to what we’ve done. Sometimes it helps to get the message across. But you need to treat the clip as an art tool, unfortunately it isn’t always possible.

4. You started to sing in English on the last album and carried on with this new album. How did that go down with your long term fans and have you gained more fans as a result of doing this?

The reaction of some of our Polish fans was unexpectedly adverse. Quite many of their opinions are reluctant or even aggressive. They don’t want us to sing in English. And I don’t know why… Somehow I find it really stimulating. I feel as if I’m risking everything playing against the attitude of the crowd. I know this feeling from experience, it is quite frightening. We expect, however, to engage more listeners behind our native soil so we should communicate in English, it’s obvious.

5. The new album cover is a striking one! Who came up with the idea for it?

This is art work of our bass man Rafal Matuszak, he is a talented graphic, he made all of our covers in the past, and our recognizable sign regarding the covers production is to make the message as simple as possible and visible even from the distance.

6. What have been the live highlights and why?

Every show is important, we love playing gigs and this is the most exciting part of work. Albums are just the beginning of an adventure, a kind of introduction before we hit the road and start performing. If you haven’t seen COMA on the stage, you don’t know the answer to what we really are as artists. We played some important events as a supporting band on one stage with Pearl Jam, Linkin Park, Limb Bizkit, Tool, but these big names we can only put into our CV, much more thrilling was to play a few small concerts in Germany and Austria recently where people didn’t know who we really are and the only vehicle to convince them was our music. This is the feeling of pure and fair contact between us and the audience. In Poland listeners put their expectations on us, they love us or hate us. In any other country only music matters.

7. Has the internet helped you get your music out there or has it in some ways hindered it by websites offering free downloads? Do you still rely heavily on CD sales as opposed to downloads?

I do not really think about it, this is rather business than the artistic part of our life. I attend it only when it is impossible to avoid the topic. The CD is important as an art work and it will always be something precious for me and for fans but, frankly, it doesn’t matter to me if the label is selling CDs or audio tracks. Moreover, the Internet helps to communicate us with fans, to say what’s up and hello, but only playing concerts helped us to engage new followers.

8. You have a couple of UK shows coming up in March. Have you played the UK before and what sort of set can fans expect? Do you keep the same setlist for every country you play in or do you change it slightly to suit a different country’s fans?

There were some organizing obstacles, so we had to change the dates of the gigs, now we are gonna play on 25th April in London, 26th April in Manchester. We want to play a big show with all elements including proper lights, visualizations, pieces of scenography, good sounding, etc. we are gonna mix Polish and English songs to create an energetic, two hour performance, we expect a strong group of Polish fans, so it is impossible to play only in English, they have known us for much longer as a Polish band.

This is just the beginning, in summer we are planning to play a few festivals and it depends on the kind of event what the set list will be, we are not afraid to change the plan during the concert when we see that the expectations are different than we thought before. However, we don’t have any recognition yet, we need to play more gigs to know the audience needs in different parts of Europe.

9. What made you want to start making music and who have been your musical influences?

In my particular case, the need of acting on the stage emerged early. It was just deep conviction that I must perform in front of a crowd. When for a long time I couldn’t realize this dream, I felt unhappy and I felt I wasted my life. I’m also an actor, I was studying in Krakow Acting High School, so this way of expression is my destiny. If I didn’t sing, I would act in the theatre. But music gives you more freedom than acting, here you are your own director and you write your own drama. And because my love for both kinds of expression (playing music and acting) is so strong, my first and most important influence is David Bowie.

Strong sounds like Tool or System of a Down this are the
field of inspiration for the guys, but all we do is always a mix of a different styles. Some reviewers blame us for being an undefined band without any concrete style, where COMA really is? They tend to ask. The answer is COMA is everywhere! We are searching all the time and this is the reason for our existence, not reaching the goals but looking for them. Not answering the questions but asking.

10. What do you enjoy doing in your time away from music?

Usually we plan what to do in the future, music takes the biggest part of our life, but when you spend most of the year with guys in the van, you appreciate private life as well. To save the mental hygiene, I sometimes appear in films and series, play on theatre stages and make my own music in solo projects, it is really healthy and inspiring. This year I’m planning to take part in Warsaw Marathon. It’s an important goal for me. To keep your stamina up you need to move on. So let’s go.

Album review: PAUL RAYMOND PROJECT – Terms & Conditions Apply

Paul Raymond - Terms & Conditions Apply

Hear No Evil Recordings [Release date 28.01.13]

Paul Raymond may be best known as the quiet one in UFO and perhaps surprisingly this is his sixth solo outing.

’Terms & Conditions Apply’ will appeal to UFO fans, but more broadly lovers of melodic hard rock.  Overall, there is a fairly high quota of good tunes whilst lyrically showing an acute awareness of modern times -  q.v. ‘Terms & Conditions’ and ‘C-List Celebrity’.

Raymond plays guitar and keys throughout and is aided by special guests Reuben Archer (Stampede) on ‘Love Is Blind’ and old sparring partner Michael Schenker (Reach Out (I’ll Be There)).  Raymond’s fellow band member, guitarist Andy Simmons, is responsible for co-writes on the key standout tracks and this is a promising partnership for the future.

The opener ‘Born & Raised On Rock ‘N’ Roll’ may set the tone, but it doesn’t impress as much as what follows, the rolling and infectious ‘End Of Life As We Know It’ and ‘Terms & Conditions’.  Both tracks are true standouts.

Like the first track, ‘Deeper Shade Of Blue’ is more perfunctory rock and roll but always grounded in a commercial sensibility whilst the ballad ‘We Will Be Strong’ sounds like something that could have been knocked out by Freddie Mercury with Queen.  The band are even brave enough to include an excellent instrumental ‘Whiskey Mac’.

The Schenker track – a cover of the Four Tops’ ‘Reach Out (I’ll Be There)’ – is a strange choice and lacks the primal ’oomph’ of the original, probably one to gloss over unless you’re a rabid fan of the German guitarist.

And to round things off, Raymond includes three bonus tracks which in different shape, form and title appeared on UFO albums but now appear as originally conceived.

If you take away the bonuses and the co-habits with Messrs Archer and Schenker (and one cover version at that) the album is far too economical, but as a complete package it passes muster. ***1/2

SABBATH ASSEMBLY – Ye Are Gods

Svart Records – Out Now.

Religion and Mysticism have been closely linked with Rock throughout its history, providing both artists and bands with subjects for inspiration and discussion through music.

While images of the goat have been sported on many a band t-shirt and the word of the God has been praised through the works of bands such as Stryper and Believer, we struggle to identify a case where the agents of light and dark have decided to bury their differences and join forces…well, that is, not until Jamie Myers (Hammers Of Misfortune) and Dave “Christian” Nuss decided to bring Sabbath Assembly to life back in 2010.

Sabbath Assembly allows the duet to express religious ‘anxieties’ that are influenced by the beliefs of the group The Process Church of the Final Judgement – a group that flourished  in the 60s and 70s, envisaging the reconciliation of Satan and Christ before the end of the world. Such a subject matter could produce miracles if expressed through a fitting ‘soundtrack’ and in their second studio effort “Ye Are Gods” the New York outfit has achieved just that.

Working more like a long sermon, rather than ten individual compositions, the music on offer is top quality 60s/70s Rock and Psychedelia that may take a while to seep in, especially if you come from a heavier musical background, but which has the potential to be fulfilling and rewarding.

I remember being quite surprised by the colourful narration in “Let Us All Give Praise And Validation” but I soon felt at home with the help of the beautifully crafted acoustic guitar melodies and choral chants in this piece. Simplicity is the name of the game, as suggested by the piano melodies of 60s classic “The Love Of The Gods” or the oriental violin tunes of “We Come From the One” – both quite enjoyable to my ears.

Genesis P-Orridge is new in the band but moody vocals in the prayer-like track “Bless Our Lord And Master”, together with the more tragic approach followed in “We Give Our Lives” makes her ideal for the job. The clever use of the organ gave “Exit” much character while both “Christ You Bring The End” & “And The Clarion Calls” are as simple as they are unique.

In the eerie narrative-style piece “In The Time Of Abaddon II” we have the second highlight of the album, while the likewise inclined “Transcendence” provides a conclusion to both the album and to the band’s theological thesis/stance.

I am not sure what would be the ideal target audience for this album and, God knows (ahem), I can see how someone might at first dismiss “Ye Are Gods” as either dated or outwardly pretentious, but a mixture of belief and perseverance will hopefully convince you that what Sabbath Assembly have created here is something truly special.

This, for me, is one of the biggest musical surprises of the year 2012, an album that I simply cannot afford not having in my record collection and I say record collection as Svart Records has also issued it on a nicely packed vinyl, a copy of which is already on its way to me. Check it out, pronto!

JOLLY (Joe Reilly) Interview

None of the interviews I have conducted so far has ever been as revealing about the artist as this one! Apparently, I’ve been choosing the wrong breakfast cereal for the past (almost) four decades of existence – thanks for clarifying that, Joe! Then again, you don’t name your band “JOLLY” if you lack a sense of humour, right? With an album as impressive as “The Audio Guide To Happiness, Part II” only days away from being released I decided to prepare a few questions for the band – questions that were answered in an honest and pretty entertaining way by keyboardist Joe Reilly. Read on and find out what makes this US band so special!

By Yiannis (John) Stefanis.

  1. Hi Joe. We are very happy to be hosting you on our pages. Even though you have been around since 2006 there will be people who, like me, are just learning about you now. In view of that, can you please provide us with a short bio?

Joe: Hey GTRT, thanks for having me!  It’s true that the first incarnation of JOLLY, which was me, Louis, and Anadale, had met to practice once in December 2006, but the band’s true formation and start point of development was in 2008.  Louis and Anadale started talking through Craigslist, looking to start a band.  Then Louis contacted me (we knew each other from high school and hadn’t spoken in about 6 years); though he knew me more as a guitar player, he remembered that I also played some piano/keyboard and asked me to join in that capacity.  Then we drafted Mike Rudin, who Louis and I also knew from high school, to play bass.  We parted with Mike very amicably in 2009, mainly due to commitment issues, and then Louis got Anthony, who he went to college with, to play bass.  And we all lived happily ever after.

  1. “The Audio Guide To Happiness, Part II” is the band’s third studio effort but the second album under the auspices of Inside Out – a record label totally dedicated to Progressive music of all persuasions. How did you guys manage to strike a deal with such a prestigious company?

Joe: The short story is that our manager, who also manages Riverside, has a relationship with the label and introduced our music to them, and they liked it.  InsideOut was bold enough to sign us, though we had no following whatsoever, purely based on faith in our music.  We’re very grateful for that.  The long story involves multiple suicide threats, a dangerous trek through catacombs in Austria, an agoraphobic clown named Eddie, and four diagnoses of feline leukemia.  It would definitely be more appropriate to tell in an interview for the fourth album.

  1. The opening lines of “Guidance Three”, the opening track of “The Audio Guide To Happiness, Part II” suggest that one should first listen to “The Audio Guide To Happiness, Part I”. Is it important to first hear Part I to really appreciate the second part?

Joe: I’d say it’s more important than seeing Troll before Troll 2, but less important than seeing Kill Bill Vol. 1 before Kill Bill Vol. 2.  Honestly, it depends if the listener is looking to “The Audio Guide To Happiness” solely as a body of music or as a musical and spiritual journey.

  1. The titles chosen for your last two albums suggest a certain lyrical/thematic connection or continuity between them. Is that also the case with regards the music on offer? Are these two albums different parts of the same musical journey or separate entities?

Joe: If you want to experience one part of the album as a set of songs, then I’d say each part holds up on its own, but they are definitely part of the same musical journey.  And I think there’s something to be gained from hearing both parts.  The melodic, lyrics, and thematic connections that you are referring to are there, and I think they work synergistically between the two parts.  It’s like when there is a reprise in a musical; you have a character (or difference characters) singing a recurring melody in different contexts and tones.  The recurrences are more powerful than just the one because they develop the character and storyline more.

  1. One of the first things that struck me about “The Audio Guide To Happiness, Part II” are the number of genres you have incorporated into your music – with some elements that might put off most Prog purists– yet, the way you have introduced these elements is not only impressive but also quite successful as far as I am concerned. Are you aware how others perceive this?

Joe: I’ve seen journalists comment on the incorporation of multiple styles within our music, sometimes as a positive thing and other times as a negative.  Some people have complimented us on it, regarding the blends as relatively seamless, natural, and original.  Others have said that it detracts from us having a musical identity, or that we’re a rip off of a million other bands.  The four of us in JOLLY appreciate a lot of different styles of music, and these other genres make their way into our songs naturally.  We’ve never forced a sound into our music for the sake of “pulling off” more genres.  It’s never been “wouldn’t it be cool if we did a reggae part in this song?”  It’s always been jamming, messing around, etc., and then suddenly we start playing a pop dance rhythm or something and it just makes sense for the song.

  1. On that same note, what is the strangest or most inappropriate (in your opinion) comment that you’ve ever heard about your music – the one that made you feel that the person writing the review hadn’t managed to understand your intensions at all? How do you take negative press, generally?

Joe: One journalist reviewed the album and said that the keyboard parts were awesome, but that the keyboardist had really stupid hair.  I found that very off-putting because I shave my head, and hardly have any hair to call stupid. But seriously, we’ve gotten our share of negative reviews, and people who don’t like what we’re doing, whether it’s binaural tones or the music itself; but we’ve been fortunate enough to receive a lot of positive feedback as well.  In general, negative press used to bother me more, but has less so over the years.  I think I reached the point one day where I started to feel confident enough in what we were doing, probably because of the positive press and response from fans, to be able to just understand that it’s fine that there are people who don’t like us.  Our music isn’t for everyone, and that’s okay; our goal isn’t for everyone to be a JOLLY fan.  Just that we get to do what we and our fans want, and that we can earn enough money to afford electricity and the occasional sandwich from Subway.

  1. The press release that comes with the release talks about binaural tones – a scientific method that’s designed to help the listener achieve a level of happiness. Now, it could just be a placebo effect, but I admit to feeling quite happy having listened to your album. Can you explain the method behind this concept?

Joe: We have various binaural tone waves throughout both parts of the album, actually one type per phase (the album is broken into phases of the journey towards true happiness).  They are at a very low volume, but can be heard during quieter parts of the album.  The waves are created by the slight difference in two single frequency tones; on headphones, one frequency per earphone.  Different wave types (delta, alpha, gamma) result from how music the difference is.  Basically it causes our brains to perceive frequencies that our ears don’t; frequencies below the human hearing range.  Sorry for that rather boring explanation.  I used to be a high school science teacher. Research has shown that extensive exposure to these waves can enrich feelings of happiness, creativity, etc.  Some people listen to binaural tones (sometimes with some mood music) while they are going to sleep.  We thought it would be interesting to embed them in our music to try to feed the brain these feelings while you listen to JOLLY.

  1. Two of my favourite songs of the album are “Firewell” and “You Against The World” – songs that couldn’t be more technically and emotionally different. How is it possible for the same band to create such diverse offerings?

Joe: As I mentioned before, we like and listen to a lot of different stuff.  Our common link as a band is mainly 90s rock/grunge.  It’s also helpful that we have several different song writing approaches.  Sometimes we’ll get something jamming as a full band, or Anadale will write something and bring it to us to work on, or I will come up with a progression and work on it with Anadale.  And then we also add a lot of parts and write during the record process.  There’s a lot of input from all of us on the songs, and we all have our own things that we like separate from the common core, so a lot of possibilities for creation become possible.

  1. I am sure that, by this stage, you will be completely bored reading about people’s perceptions of what the influences behind this album might be but I cannot help than mention names like Pain Of Salvation, Pink Floyd, Anathema and Dream Theater – all, of course, presented in a very personal and, dare I say, unique way. Are you annoyed with me?!

Joe: I’m a tad annoyed that you like classic Cheerios more than Honey Nut Cheerios, but other than that, I’m not annoyed at all. It’s always interesting to hear the comparisons and influences.  I’m very appreciative of the progressive rock community, and I am a fan of Pink Floyd, but I never really listened to most of the prog bands that we’re compared to, like Pain of Salvation, Anathema, and Porcupine Tree.  My influences are bands like Radiohead, Soundgarden, and Tears For Fears, singer/songwriters like Fiona Apple and Damien Rice, and then stuff like 80s pop music, film score music, and old school 40s jazz.  This doesn’t mean that I am denouncing progressive rock or saying I dislike it, it’s just not what I grew up loving.  I’m glad that the scene exists and that we’ve been able to attract fans of it.

  1. Last October, Hurricane Sandy inflicted some serious damage on the band’s property and studio jeopardising the creation of this album, however, your loyal fans stepped up and helped you finish “The Audio Guide To Happiness, Part II”. You must be really proud of them – can you comment on how this happened?

Joe: When Louis called me and told me that the entire basement had filled up to the top with ocean water, I was speechless.  Everything was rolling along and going well until then, and though I knew a dangerous storm was approaching, I never anticipated something like this happening.  Needless to say, it was a major bump in the road and we had to figure out how we could rebuild for the tour and make our album release a possibility.  So we started a campaign on Indiegogo, looking to raise at least $10,000 to at least help subsidize our reconstruction (our expenses for rebuilding and the tour were actually more in the area of $30,000).  I had no idea what to expect for our fundraiser, and I was floored when I saw us hit the $10,000 mark in 10 days.  It was very heart warming to see the response and all of the encouraging comments coming in.  JOLLY will be forever grateful to fans for enabling us to continue; they saved the day.  It’s impossible to say how long it would have taken us to get back to touring shape and release the album had they not helped us out the way they did.

  1. How long did it take for “The Audio Guide To Happiness, Part II” to come to life and how much time did you end up spending in the studio recording it? How would you describe that process?

Joe: Audio Guide 2 was written and tracked before Part I was even released.  Some of the songs on the album date back as far as 2008.  This past year, we started reworking some of the recordings, tracked some new parts, remixed, and mastered it.  So overall Audio Guide 2 was a 4-year experience.  Of course we weren’t working on it the whole time, but it was still a long road.  The process itself was an amazing experience; when you can trace a song’s development over four years, from birth to finished recording, you get a discrete timeline of everything that changed about it, and all of the memories associated with each retooling.  It makes us feel like our lives really went into producing the finished product.

  1. Are you guys actively involved in the production duties or do you prefer to leave such things in the hands of professionals?

Joe: Our albums are recorded and produced in-house.  Louis, our drummer, produced and mixed both parts of “The Audio Guide To Happiness.”  We’re extremely lucky to have his production talents in our band (especially since we don’t have money to spend on professional recording).  The only thing we do get a professional for is mastering. In fact, almost everything JOLLY creates is done in-house.  Our videos and website are made by us as well (sometimes with some help from friends of family).  It’s just something that smaller bands with no real budgets have to be able to do to get themselves out there without robbing a bank.

  1. The release date of the album is more or less a month from now. Apart from the obvious press campaign and interviews, have you decided on using any additional promotion platforms – a video, perhaps?

Joe: We’ll definitely be making videos to support the album.  In the Youtube generation, it’s more important than ever to have video output to market yourself.  Our channel is www.youtube.com/theincrediblejolly; be on the lookout!

  1. If your label was to grant you unlimited funds for the creation of a video to accompany a song from “The Audio Guide To Happiness, Part II” which song and what theme would you opt for?

Joe: That’s a good one.  I would choose “The Grand Utopia.”  The song lends itself to very dazzling and intricate imagery, stuff we’d only be able to pull off with a huge budget.  If the funds were unlimited, I would probably also embezzle a fair amount to buy a million boxes of Fruit-by-the-Foot.

  1. Having friends in high places is something that every band needs, especially when that person happens to be the mighty skinsman Mike Portnoy. A year ago, you were in the privileged position of opening for his latest all-star project Flying Colours – what are your plans this time round?

Joe: Mike Portnoy asking us to play the Flying Colors show personally was the greatest honor we’ve received as a band.  Flying Colors only played two shows in the US, and when I think of all of the NYC-area bands that they could have asked (especially ones with more fans), I’m blown away when I think that he chose us. Our upcoming plans are that we’re playing a European tour with Riverside this March, which will be awesome.  Then Riverside will be coming to the US in May, and we’ll be doing 6 shows with them around the East Coast.  I’m really grateful that we’ll be able to play for Riverside fans to promote Audio Guide 2; I hope it gets us out there enough to start really blossoming a career for JOLLY.

  1. Everything I heard on “The Audio Guide To Happiness, Part II” was enough to turn me into a fan – so now what I need to seal the bond, so to speak, is a live show. Do you guys plan on coming to London at all?

Joe: We’ll be opening for Riverside in London on March 14th and the O2 Academy Islington.  Hope you can make it!  We’ll invite you on stage to sing a song and throw M&Ms out to the crowd.

  1. Guys, it has been a pleasure preparing these questions for you. I want to wish you all success with regards “The Audio Guide To Happiness, Part II” and also to see you soon on UK soil. The last words are yours…

Joe: Thanks so much for giving me the opportunity to talk more to your readers about Audio Guide 2.  We’ll be in the UK with Riverside for four shows this March: the tour dates are listed on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/jollyband).

Also, I broke a window screen when I was 8 years old and blamed it on my 4-year-old brother.  I just wanted to come clean about that and tell him I’m sorry I got him in trouble.

JOLLY loves you!
