Album review: 25 YARD SCREAMER – The Memory Cheats (The Pictures Within 2023)

25 Yard Screamer - The Memory Cheats (The Pictures Within 2023)

White Knight Records [Release date 24.01.24] 25yardscreamer.bandcamp.com/music

25 Yard Screamer, who we first reviewed back in 2005, are now typical of those solid bands who feed the gnarly backbone of prog rock without being touched by wider success or recognition. It seems an age since their impressive “concept” piece “Cassandra” that really brought them to our attention and since that time they’ve released six more albums including the latest.  We fondly remember their set on our ‘Rising Stars’ stage at the Cambridge Rock Festival in 2007.

Although influenced by Rush and the more metal progsters they haven’t followed fashion or expectation and each album has marked a departure, either in the music or in the band line-up.

Happily the band’s vocalist/guitarist Nick James and Matt Clarke – both original members – remain steadfast. And for their latest offering they’ve revisited their 2003 “debut” “The Pictures Within”. This was only ever produced “for family and friends” and is what the band call “an album of demos” so that they could at that time review progress and potential.  For completists, the track ‘Throw The Blame’ also appeared on 2005′s ‘Approaching From An Oblique Angle’.

The influence of Rush throughout these tunes is evident but the whole is elevated by an urgency in both James’ vocals and playing. Add in Matt’s bass propulsion and Chris Henchey’s drums and the energy levels remain high throughout. This is well represented by the opener ‘Leap Of Faith’ which comes at you wave on wave building to James’ solo playout.

The band can vary the sound palette and ‘I’m An Explosive’ is convincing for both its orchestration and James’ vocal. A real standout along with a great instrumental ‘Catapult’.

On the other hand ‘No Beautiful View’ presages what they would do with the yet to come ‘Cassandra’ blending ambient effects, plaintive vocal and widescreen drama.

In fact the bonus “Havoc Mix” of this track (a Bandcamp exclusive) is the better version and does full justice to Nick James’ vocal (and guitar).  The song itself reminds of Marlllion in their ‘Somewhere Else’ phase (a la ‘No Such Thing’).  A whole album of this sort of stuff anyone?

The band really go to town on the title track which becomes an orchestrated epic topped with James’ mangled guitar.  Wonderful.  It could only be improved upon with a dedicated keyboard player and that sweeping orchestration elevated in the mix.

Of course we haven’t got that limited album original for comparison (although it was remastered in 2020 and available via Bandcamp), but it’s fair to say that the band have moved on in leaps and bounds since the early-2000s.

This re-imagining is a great opportunity for both the band and their fans to reassess early work. It will also appeal to those who loved ‘Cassandra’ as – like that masterwork – it is very accessible and in that respect also connects with their previous offering ‘Nemesis’. Are these guys mellowing?  ****1/2

Album review: D’ERCOLE – Near Death Experience

Rock Company Records [Release date 25.04.24]

Album number ten from D’Ercole (and goodness knows what number album this is to feature the talents of Phil Vincent!), who consist of Phil Vincent (vocals, keyboards, guitars, bass),  Damian D’Ercole (guitars) and B.F. D’Ercole (drums, percussion).

As with any D’Ercole album you are guaranteed plenty of riff led melodic hard rock. On this album though Phil Vincent and his band mates add a few new ideas, including spacey synths on ‘Holy Ground’. Then there is the piano/guitar led ballad ‘Cryin’ Over You’, which is a bit of a beastie clocking in at over nine minutes.

The short, sharp hard rock of ‘Until It’s Gone’ and ‘Turn Back Now’ are proper foot stomping, air guitar work outs. These are the sort of songs Phil Vincent excels at.

There is a cover on here too, none other than Uriah Heep’s classic ‘Stealin’. Keeps within the original with a Heep like choir on the vocal harmonies and synths/keys used to good effect. The guitar riffs may not be Mick Box like but boy does this version rock!

D’Ercole and that man Phil Vincent have done it again with another fine album chock full of quality melodic hard rock. ***1/2

Gig review: JUDAS PRIEST/Saxon/Uriah Heep – Wembley Arena, London, 21 March 2024

JUDAS PRIEST- Wembley Arena, London, 21 March 2024

For a band that so proudly proclaims their British roots, there is a case that Judas Priest have simply not toured their home country enough. In the eighties they largely neglected it for the USA with the result that I did not see them until 1988, some years after first getting into the band.

More recently, and through no fault of their own, they were locked in (pun intended) to the constantly postponed Ozzy Osbourne tour. So when that tour was finally cancelled to the surprise of no one, a first proper UK tour since 2015 was swiftly announced. Even better, two of their fellow British rock institutions (seen touring together in 2022) were along for the ride.

URIAH HEEP - Wembley Arena, London, 21 March 2024

Uriah Heep opened with an interestingly put together 35 minute set, geared at persuading what might have been a tough audience quite how heavy the current incarnation of the band is. They opened with songs from their last two albums in ‘Save Me Tonight’ and ‘Grazed by Heaven’, then the heavy and oh so seventies organ of Phil Lanzon driving ‘Rainbow Demon’.

A further new song in the fast and furious ‘Hurricane’ seemed heavier than the studio version: indeed singer Bernie Shaw confessed that while they were not metal, they had dabbled in it in the seventies, allowing the ageless Mick Box (who shouted ‘from Walthamstow to Wembley’ with his trademark grin) to crank out the classic machine gun riff that introduces ‘Free’n’Easy’.

URIAH HEEP - Wembley Arena, London, 21 March 2024

They ended with a couple of classics, Phil rocking back and forth during the Hammond intro to ‘Gypsy’ and a short and sweet ‘Easy Livin’. Leaving the stage to ‘Land of Hope and Glory’, they hopefully won a few new recruits for the upcoming tour Bernie hinted at from the stage.

While there always something reassuringly familiar about Saxon, this was my first sighting of them since the major line up change of Paul Quinn retiring from the road and being replaced by Brian Tatler. The Diamond Head man’s influence was already apparent on the riffs of ‘Hell Fire and Damnation’, opening the show as the title track of their new album and with some stage effects to match, not to mention a classic Brian Blessed intro.

SAXON - Wembley Arena, London, 21 March 2024

Oldie ‘Motorcycle Man’ was fast and furious- indeed the sound became very distorted at one stage-  as was ‘Sacrifice’, showing Saxon now as heavy as in their history. They also gave the new album a decent airing, including ‘There’s Something in Roswell’, though I find that rather repetitive, before more oldies in ‘And the Bands Played On’ with Brian playing that lead break and the fine riffing of ‘Power And The Glory’.

Biff Byford told us the astonishing fact that this was the very first time they played Wembley, and I had to chuckle when he said it was a bill he would be prepared to pay for ‘and I don’t pay for many- I’m a Yorkshireman!’

SAXON - Wembley Arena, London, 21 March 2024

A menacing bass intro from Nibbs Carter led into a beguiling ‘Madame Guillotine’, one of their best recent songs, but from there on it was the old stuff we know and love all the way beginning with ‘Heavy Metal Thunder’. Indeed the fact Biff offered people a fielder’s choice of ‘Dallas 1pm ‘(which won out), ‘Crusader’ or ‘Strong Arm Of the Law’ proved how many classics they had to leave out.

But the crowd- most of whom, like me, grew up on this stuff- got steadily more raucous to ‘747 (Strangers In the Night)’, and the NWOBHM oral history ‘Denim and Leather’ and by the time of ‘Wheels Of Steel’ Biff managed to cajole even those in the tiered seats to their feet.

SAXON - Wembley Arena, London, 21 March 2024

The two guitarists worked well as a team but it was noticeable that with Brian still bedding in, Doug Scarratt emerged as the senior partner, taking the majority of the solos including those formerly Paul Quinn’s domain.

It increased the trend for a more aggressive and contemporary guitar style, and the intro to ‘Princess of the Night’ was the one song where he didn’t quite find the right nuances, but it was still a fitting end to a splendid if truncated set. The open secret that they will be headlining Stonedead was revealed during the night and that is something I am now looking forward to even more.

JUDAS PRIEST - Wembley Arena, London, 21 March 2024

An intro tape of ‘War Pigs’ by fellow Brummie titans Black Sabbath heralded a perfect backdrop for the arrival of Judas Priest who brought a bigger sized stage show. Unfortunately having chosen to be on the floor on the basis this was a show to be standing up for and  people there were more likely to do than in the balconies, even at six foot I could see frustratingly little of it with the Arena’s poor sightlines and Rob Halford disappeared from view every time he put his head down and bent forward.

Having just released new album ‘Invincible Shield’ to critical acclaim and high chart positions it was appropriate that a new cut, indeed one of the more brutal one in ‘Panic Attack’ opened the night but there was then a surprise as ‘You Got Another Thing Coming’ was moved forward from its traditional encore position and stripped of the audience call and response. It warmed people up nicely followed by another stone cold classic in ‘Breaking the Law’.

However this was the most obvious example of where Rob would sing every other line and leave the audience to the rest. It was a rather annoying trait but I suppose it was one way to preserve his voice, which it has to be said had weathered impressively with some of his trademark screams. ‘Rapid Fire’ did what it said on the tin musically and its references to hammering anvils and forging furnaces were a reminder that Sabbath did not have a monopoly on the sounds inspired by the post-war industrial West Midlands.

JUDAS PRIEST - Wembley Arena, London, 21 March 2024

To the band’s credit they mixed up the set even from night to night to play a variety of deeper cuts, but I was very disappointed that we at Wembley got neither of my two favourite epics ‘Victim of Changes’ and ‘Beyond the Realms of Death’. Instead we got ‘Sword Of Damocles’, impressive enough yet fulfilling neither category of new song nor beloved oldie, and puzzlingly ‘Love Bites’ which was always one of their weaker songs and I cannot believe the public was clamouring for it.

The bludgeon of ‘Saints in Hell’ was another unexpected cut. In the circumstances I found myself enjoying a ‘Turbo Lover’, usually too much of a cheese fest for me, simply as something to sing along to. These were interspersed with a couple of new album cuts in ‘Crown Of Horns’, preceded by some arpeggios from Richie Faulkner, confirming its recorded status as one of my favourite songs on the album, and the title track.

Things picked up with ‘Sinner’, with some Halford screams and fiery playing from Ritchie who has become an even more dominant force in the band (though Andy Sneap, his previously short hair spectacularly grown out, did an exemplary job as second guitarist). Rob’s ‘yeah yeah yeah’ call and response led into a fun ‘The Green Manalishi’ and when drummer Scott Travis was given a turn at the mic, that could only mean ‘Painkiller’, Rob hitting notes no normal 72 year old could reach.

JUDAS PRIEST - Wembley Arena, London, 21 March 2024

There was still plenty of time for more Priest classics for the encores, beginning with ‘Electric  Eye’ then the overly familiar yet ever amusing sight of Rob riding his Harley on stage to ‘Hell Bent for Leather’.

There was one more surprise to come – I knew Glenn Tipton had made an appearance at the Birmingham show but assumed that was a one off in his hometown. So it was with a huge cheer and great warmth that he was welcomed onstage for a final pair of ‘Metal Gods and a rollicking ‘Living After Midnight’, where hearteningly he played the solo. He did look rather gaunt however and seeing our ailing musical heroes now making token appearances is a sad fact of life these days.

I think I actually just preferred Saxon to the headliners on this night- as well as their set being more concise, they somehow seemed more down to earth and fun. But it was still great to see Priest rattle out those classics of the metal pantheon after nine long years- hopefully not for the last time.

Gig review: SLASH FEATURING MYLES KENNEDY AND THE CONSPIRATORS – Wembley Arena, London, 5 April 2024

SLASH FEATURING MYLES KENNEDY AND THE CONSPIRATORS - Wembley Arena, London, 5 April 2024

It has been a good couple of years since Slash, featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators, released the ‘4’ album. However these days he again has to fit solo work around Guns’ n’ Roses duties which have included stadium shows in 2022 and Glasto and Hyde Park last year, not to mention Myles’ Alter Bridge commitments. So it was only now that they toured the album, the London date at the Wembley Arena cattle shed completing for me a couple of days seeing the very very best contemporary guitarists, on the heels of Joe Bonamassa at the Royal Albert Hall.

There was also a bonus of a first chance for me to catch Mammoth WVH, having missed both their supports with Alter Bridge and the Def Motley stadium tour. Wolfgang Van Halen looks at home on the big stage, had a modest charm to him and was well backed by four musicians including rhythm guitarist Frank Sidoris who was doing double duty with Slash.

SLASH FEATURING MYLES KENNEDY AND THE CONSPIRATORS- Wembley Arena, London, 5 April 2024

Wisely he avoids sounding anything remotely like Van Halen, though his excellent guitar work did include the odd arpeggio that would have made his old man proud, and he is a more than decent vocalist. The music is difficult to pigeonhole but is modern heavy rock with a melodic sheen. Alter Bridge and Shinedown would be comparisons at a pinch though truthfully Mammoth don’t sound awfully close to them either.

Highlights included opener ‘Another Celebration at the End of the World’ and ‘I’m Alright’, one of the more commercial songs though the song title is seemingly not to be found in the lyric. ‘Like a Pastime’ had a much more metallic feel and closer ‘Don’t Back Down’ was lively with a hint of Black Stone Cherry. The one downside of a set that nicely warmed us all up for Slash was that a half hour set was almost insulting for a band with two albums under their belt already. Fortunately since then a headline show at Islington Academy has been announced.

SLASH FEATURING MYLES KENNEDY AND THE CONSPIRATORS- Wembley Arena, London, 5 April 2024

As for the headliners, for an arena show, every expense had been spared with the band playing to a plain backdrop of the album cover and no stage show to speak of. On the other hand there are few more recognisable and instantly charismatic sights in rock (indeed dare I use the overused word iconic?) than Slash in his top hat and shades, radiating an insouciant rock and roll cool and effortlessly playing his Gibson Les Paul, tilted at an angle.

SLASH FEATURING MYLES KENNEDY AND THE CONSPIRATORS - Wembley Arena, London, 5 April 2024

So the music would have to speak for itself and a pair of openers in ‘River is Rising’ and ‘Driving Rain’ epitomised the Slash solo sound with the incomparable Myles Kennedy singing- very decent mainstream hard rock, if less maverick and edgy than Guns’n’Roses. They were followed by ‘Halo’ with its bouncy chorus, and ‘Back to Cali’ was well received as it interspersed new material, including ‘C’est La Vie’ which for once saw Slash trade his Les Paul for a flying V for a more metallic sound.

SLASH FEATURING MYLES KENNEDY AND THE CONSPIRATORS - Wembley Arena, London, 5 April 2024

‘Actions Speak Louder Than Words’ was a grower with a fun commerciality but for all his vocal qualities Myles is not a naturally charismatic frontman and on this stage it showed. Indeed it was noticeable it took bassist Todd Kerns to rouse the crowd’s energy levels when he took over vocal duties, even if it was a cover of Lenny Kravitz’s ‘Always On the Run’. ‘Bent to Fly’  was a semi ballad and ‘Spirit Love’ had some interesting sitar- like guitar sounds but too much of the material, while decent and with the expected impressive guitar work, was a bit samey and ‘meat and potatoes’.

SLASH FEATURING MYLES KENNEDY AND THE CONSPIRATORS - Wembley Arena, London, 5 April 2024

Indeed I think Slash is at a bit of a crossroads. Since returning to G’n’R these solo shows mainly feature his own material, but the crowd even where I was in the standing area seemed very static. It was noticeable they really came to life during the sole Gunners number and it wasn’t even one of their hits in ‘Don’t Damn Me’, once again sung by Todd including that great lyric ‘vicarious existence is a f**ing waste of time’.

SLASH FEATURING MYLES KENNEDY AND THE CONSPIRATORS- Wembley Arena, London, 5 April 2024

‘Starlight’ was one of the highlights with Myles’ voice at its aching best and Slash playing with welcome delicacy, while ‘Wicked Stone’ was a  weaker song but a showcase for his one lengthy guitar solo, though it seemed to be the same riff just played ever faster. ‘April Fool’ was lively but a low was ‘Feel My World’, Myles introducing with a very un rock’n’ roll dedication to pets and his voice had an almost Steve Perry- esque smoothness.

SLASH FEATURING MYLES KENNEDY AND THE CONSPIRATORS - Wembley Arena, London, 5 April 2024

The gig did belatedly warm up with some of the Slash solo songs that have had staying power with Todd again rousing the rabble during ‘Dr Alibi’, ‘You’re a Lie’, and ‘World On Fire’ complete with lengthy band intros and audience participation.

SLASH FEATURING MYLES KENNEDY AND THE CONSPIRATORS - Wembley Arena, London, 5 April 2024

For the encore there was a real curveball as a pedal steel was wheeled out for Slash, the unlikeliest combination of man and guitar imaginable, added to Brent Fitz moving to piano from the drums. Even more surprisingly they played a reimagined cover of ‘Rocket Man’ which I absolutely loved, with Slash’s playing wonderfully mournful. A more conventional encore ended a set of well over 2 hours with Slash’s arpeggios progressing through ‘Anastasia’ and Myles again excelling on a minor epic.

SLASH FEATURING MYLES KENNEDY AND THE CONSPIRATORS - Wembley Arena, London, 5 April 2024

It was a mixed night with a set hard to fault on musical grounds, yet a special ‘X factor’ was missing. Whether because people had been spoiled in years gone by with a G n R heavy set, or the band’s act is ill suited to the specific demands of an arena format, the atmosphere was oddly subdued.

EP review: ROOM11 – We All Fall Down

ROOM11

Website [Release date 03.05.24]

ROOM11 are an eclectic power duo from South London whose debut release is this EP, ‘We All Fall Down’.

In a very short time, ROOM11 has managed to achieve a unique sound that incorporates an old-school approach blended with a modern, fresh appeal. Piercing high energy vocals and hefty, riffy guitars are fused by heavy beats, tinged with a touch of electronica-synth that creates a wall of sound with catchy melodies that will stick to your head like super glue. Working with producer Dave Draper (Nickelback, Terrorvision, The WildHearts) , ROOM11′s songs have been featured on BBC1 Introducing, Planet Rock, KROQ Radio, and more.

ROOM11′s debut EP is made up of five tracks composed and written by Chrisy Finn (vocals) and Robbie Pinnetto (guitar).

1: “Man On A Mission “ the guitar breakdown on this track was insane. Really showcases the musicality and the vocals were stunning and the range was incredible. Very gritty and had a blues rock undertone which I loved.

Great opening first track.

2: “All She Wants” this track melodically was faster in pace and definitely a track I can see being a crowd favourite for a live show. Very catchy and loved the lyrical intention of taking situations with a pinch of salt.

3: “Black Fly” the standout track for me in terms of vocal and musical technicality/ability.

4: “We All Fall Down” loved how catchy and upbeat this was. Also find the title apt  as during the music video shoot Robbie fell off his skateboard resulting in a broken  arm.

5: “Backseat Lovers” pure grit from this track. Loved the high energy it gave off from the get go. Great track to end the EP on.

Overall I loved the almost blues rock sound I got from the EP and it was just so energetic and infectious. The fact that there is no bassist blows my mind. Certainly a dynamic duo!

Vocally Chrisy Finn brings a beautiful range and there is absolutely no denying the raw talent.

Same can certainly be said for guitarist Robbie Pinnetto who absolutely shreds through every track.

ROOM 11 didn’t hold back ,bringing forward  different lyrical elements/ themes which explored  the highs and lows we experience in life but was brought forward with high energy, raw talent and finesse.

I’m personally looking forward to hearing what the band brings next! ****

Book review: On track…THE POLICE – Every Album, Every Song by Peter Braidis

The Police On Track Every Album, Every Song

Sonicbond Publishing [Publication date 12.04.24]

Forming when punk was starting to become a force, The Police – drummer Stuart Copeland, vocalist/bassist Sting and guitarist Andy Summers – released five albums between 1978 and 1983, coupled with a succession of hit singles, including ‘Message In A Bottle’, ‘Don’t Stand So Close To Me’ and ‘Every Breath You Take’. The Police split in 1986, with Sting going on to massive solo success, and a reunion tour in the 2000′s broke box office records and remains the finale of the band.

This is second book for Sonicbond Publishing by Peter Braidis, having penned the enjoyable book on Asia published in 2020. He certainly loves the band and music he writes about, covering the early days of the Police when Henry Padovani was briefly the band’s guitarist before Andy Summers joined in 1977.

You knew a band like the Police were onto a good thing back in 1978 as their debut album, ‘Outlandos D’Amour’, which featured three hit singles in ‘Roxanne’, ‘So Lonely’ (with its chorus ‘Feeling Sue Lawley’ a classic mondegreen!) and ‘Can’t Stand Losing You’. They went on to clock up five number one singles in the UK and all bar their debut album, topped the UK album charts. Their final album ‘Synchronicity’ was their biggest seller overall, including topping the album charts in the UK, US, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Spain. The album went eight times platinum in the US.

No new interviews but plenty of historic interviews with the band are used throughout the book. Interesting too that the compilations, box sets and live albums are given a decent write up.

A caption on the first photo in the book says ‘nobody can ever replicate the Police’. The author is bang on there, as they were a unique trio who produced many a memorable song, and were never easy to pigeonhole musically straddling rock, pop, reggae, pop rock, punk and new wave with ease.

An interesting read for the casual fan and like any book in the ‘Every album, every song’ series bound to provoke debate amongst fans over the author’s views on each album and songs. For me though it always takes you off to listen to the music described within the pages and reconnect with it, or in many cases listening to it for the first time.

Album review: BALANCE OF POWER – Fresh From The Abyss

Balance of Power

Massacre Records [Release date 19.04.24]

Balance of Power are a band this reviewer has been aware of, mainly for featuring former vocalist Lance King, but would never class myself as a fan. Balance Of Power seemingly went missing in action around 2006 and fans of the band were surprised and delighted at their return, with this album, their first studio album in twenty one years!

It marks a new line-up for the band too, with original members bassist Tony Ritchie and drummer Lionel Hicks, joined by guitarists Chris Young and Adam Wardle (although Chris Masimore and Stoney Wagner were the guitarists on the album), plus vocalist Hazel Jade, formerly with Joanovarc. Former members Pete Southern and John K also feature, along with the keyboards of Julien Spreutels.

Balance Of Power have certainly pulled out the stops for their comeback with Toby Jepson (Little Angels, Wayward Sons) in the producer’s chair along with Lionel Hicks. Mixing was carried out by Mike Plotnikoff (Halestorm, Black Stone Cherry, Fear Factory).

As the band stated about the album - “‘Fresh From The Abyss’ has been so exciting to make. Written in a time before, during and after the pandemic, we took a  more organic approach this time around. We tested ourselves with new and different ways of song writing and the results have made us very proud to be carrying the ‘Balance of Power’ flame into a new era of our evolution.”

‘Abyss’ is a real corker with heavy riffs, a big chorus and the rather good vocals of Hazel Jade, who is a perfect fit for the band’s sound. Priest fans should grab a listen to this one as pretty sure they’d enjoy it.

At times she reminded me of Tony Martin with her high register, powerful Sabbath like singing on the likes of ‘Monster’ and ‘Velocity’.

They keep it pretty tight song wise too, only the closing song ‘One More Time Around the Sun’ clocks in at over seven minutes. It keeps the listener’s attention with plenty going on musically and the one song that has big, epic arrangements in the music.

Existing fans of the band will doubtless be rejoicing at their return and they have certainly come back with an album that holds its own in the current progressive & melodic metal fields. An overdue comeback that was well worth the wait. ***1/2

Album review : UFO – Covenant + Sharks + Live (3 CD)

Twin reissue package plus a bonus CD, from British rock legends, UFO. Covenant (2000), Sharks (2002) and Live At Blind Melons (1995).

The problem with releasing a career high album like Walk On Water (1995), the band’s de facto “comeback” album, with Michael Schenker back in the fold, is that it creates an expectation that every album thereafter will live up to it.

As a result, being judged as “not as good as” Walk On Water, Covenant and Sharks ended up being underrated or overlooked.

It’s a harsh judgement, and the difference is marginal.

UFO’s increasingly fluid lineup had once again coalesced around Phil Mogg (vocals),Michael Schenker (guitar), and Pete Way (bass) and again between them they wrote all of the material, each interpreting the other’s highly personal musical language.

Covenant and Sharks may not have possessed songs with the bruising rock crunch of ‘Lights Out’ and ‘Doctor Doctor’, but Covenant gets tantalisingly close with the earthy opening track, ‘Love Is Forever’ and the wordy, declamatory, ‘Unraveled’.
Schenker’s laceratingly beautiful axework on ‘Miss The Lights’, and the booming beats of the Aynsley Dunbar / Pete Way locomotive rhythm section on ‘Midnight Train’ wins them the runners up prize.

Sharks is essentially Covenant part 2. The quality holds up, Mogg’s lyrics get more and more fantastical and Schenker’s axework sounds intuitive.

The rhythms are rawer, grittier here, matching flawlessly with Mogg’s darkly poetic lyrics, “I met Moses, I know Jezebel, Partied with Nero, As Rome burned and fell” (Quicksilver Rider). And “The enemy is at the door, the enemy within, dressed up in the strangest clothes, smells of Bombay gin” (Deadman Walking).

That said, the album probably works best on the hard rocking track, ‘Serenity’, a song that sees Mogg wringing maximum emotion from a Biblical blast of esoteric philosophising.

The third CD, Live At Blind Melons in NY State (it closed down last year) is as you might expect. The band sift through their back catalogue and ignore almost all their pre 1995 albums, landing loudly on Force It, Walk On Water and Lights Out. No Surprise really.
A rough at the edges version of ‘Rock Bottom’, is elongated to 10 minutes to give Schenker’s fiery axework room to ignite, and ultimately burn the house down.

Their knockout version of ‘Only You Can Rock Me’ is an onstage mix of raunch and melody. Paul Raymond’s proggy keyboard gells seamlessly with Schenker’s alternately metalised and melodic axework.
Mogg’s in great voice, even if the sound balancing doesn’t quite cut it at times, but hey… that’s the real charm of live music, rawness and realism.

You only have listen through this Disc once to realise how much of a bonus it is. ****

Single review : WILDSTREET – Heroes

Golden Robot Records [Release Date 12.04.24]

US band, Wildstreet, took note of music’s direction of travel (there’s no money in standing still) some years ago and have toured incessantly ever since… frequent appearances at SXSW,and M3 Rock Festival, plus 5 consecutive years at Rocklahoma. And relentless intercontinental touring. Today Europe, tomorrow the world.

If you’ve got the stamina for that, it’s a win/win. You earn a bit of money and you discover which songs work best, refining and reshaping your material with each new performance.

Musically, they’ve gone some way to resurrecting the dark side of Glam Rock that took form on the USA’s Sunset Strip in the eighties.

Listening to ‘Heroes’, a taster of their new EP, Wildstreet III, its densely packed production sounds immense – the undeniable heaviness of their live sound has percolated down into the studio.  The song’s thin, but sturdy melody creates just enough space for Wrath Star’s razoring axework, and Eric Jayk’s gravel throated howl.

More soon, hopefully. ***1/2

Album review: DAVE KELLY – Sun On My Face

Dave Kelly - Sun On My Face

Repertoire [Release date 13.02.24]

‘Sun On My Face’ could easily be a metaphor for the veteran British blues artist Dave Kelly, who in the slipstream of The Blues Band’s retirement,  can now enjoy exploring the formative influences that have helped shape his enduring career.

This album is a musical journey routed in the blues, but never defined by it. His open ended approach and a combination of the past and present gives the album its subtle flow.

His natural bluesy approach is offset by salient country and folk influences, and is occasionally underscored by a funky undertow.

This is very much a song driven album which pushes his vocals to the centre of the mix and asks much of his range and flexibility. And while he doesn’t always quite have the vocal prowess to achieve his aim, he delivers enough emotional honesty and musical acumen to get inside the songs and attack them with a mixture of reverence and gusto.

Everything is glued together by an intuitive rhythm section comprising his two sons Homer on bass, and Sam on drums and percussion, while an array of guest including Lou Stonebridge (keys), Rob Millis (keys), Steve Simpson (fiddle), Paul Jones (harp), Pete Emery (guitar) and Dog Cox (dobro), add their own subtle colourful tones.

He opens with Cole Porter’s celebratory ‘Lets Do It, Let’s Fall In Love’ which acts as signifier of his intention to dip into the past, as well as innovate in the present. And this is particularly so on the bluesy brush strokes of John Denver’s ‘Take Me Home Country Road’,

The album simmers, percolates and ultimately resolves itself with the closing mission statement of ‘I’m Am The Blues’, an impressive groove-led Kelly/Stonebridge composition.

He’s very good on Tom Jans’s heartfelt ‘Lovin Arms’, which is given a sprightly band arrangement with an embedded slide.

It is perhaps surprising that he restricts himself to 5 songs, (3 of which are self penned), of which the reflective ‘Sun On My Face’ is a deserved title track.

In fact aside from a spirited version Arthur Crudup’s ‘Mean Old Frisco Blues’, which benefits from some lovely jangled band interplay and an overall lightness of touch, it’s the self penned material that stands out.

‘Them Ole Crossroads Blues’ is trademark story telling acoustic blues with an autobiographical bent. It references the formative South West London blues scene, with Tony McPhee in particular, as well as Dave’s sister Jo Ann and Bob Hall.

But he shows a different side of his song writing craft on the Caribbean tinged ‘Too Happy to Write’, with some wry lyrics about contentment, framed by a musical accompaniment that could be Brinsley Schwartz.

He’s very ambitious on the croaky rap and percussive funk of ‘From My Ass in Lagrasse’, a titular pun and poetic ode to the Occitane region of France.

The cleverly woven lyrics deserve an accompanying printed lyric sheet.

Dave sonorous voice is well suited to the bluesy ‘Georgia On My Mind’, which builds from a cool piano line to the full blown Hammond break.

He wisely let’s Hank Williams’ ‘I Can’t Help It If I’m Still In Love With You’ breathe, so that he can indulge himself in some country twang, nasal resonance and nuanced slide.

‘A Nightingale Sang In Berkley Square’ opens wistfully and asks much of Dave’s vocal, but the song is subsequently given purchase by a subtle melange of harp, violin, Dobro and acoustic guitar.

He also revisits Smoky Robinson’s ‘My Girl’, a Dave Kelly Band live favourite.

An initial tentative feel is subsumed by some ethereal slide playing and deft piano, while he’s the exact opposite on a vibrant live version of ‘Ain’t Nothin’ In Ramblin.’

The acapella Scottish folk song ‘Tramps And Hawkers’  pushes the envelope still further, but once you get over the shock, you will immerse yourself in the moment.

The fact that he’s able to integrate such a stripped down effort and then return to the blues on the next track, says much about a versatile musician and his craft.  ***½

EP review: ASHEN REACH, DEADAUDIOSAINTS, GEOFF CARNE

ASHEN REACH - The Fear EP

ASHEN REACH The Fear EP [Release date: 22.03.24] www.ashenreach.co.uk

Liverpool-based Ashen Reach released their debut ‘Homecoming’ in late 2020 and since that time have appeared at numerous festivals in the UK including Steelhouse and Planet Rockstock.

The EP is characterised by heavy riffage and a more intricate sound than their debut with inevitable comparisons to the nu-metallers of the early 2000′s but fused with a classic rock sensitivity. There’s still a degree of shouty vocal but this is balanced by some uplifting choruses and a real sense of purpose. ‘The Dark’ in particular. A band to watch out for. ****

DEADAUDIOSAINTS To Whom It May Concern
EP www.deadaudiosaints.com
[Release date 01.03.24]

I can’t help thinking that with this new EP there is a much more talented offering waiting to break out held back by poor production.

The opening track ‘Jaded’ is promising but sounds a bit muddy and lacks real impact. This sonic shortcoming continues with ‘Anymore’. Part of the issue is that vocalist Danny is a bit low in the mix and the undoubted bombast is a bit limp.

This Yorkshire trio combine electronica influences and a rock beat propelled by Corey Jones’ bass (a la Nine Inch Nails) and might appeal to those who like the more heavyweight Placebo. They also remind me a little of the later version of electro-rockers Fashion.  If they raised their production values they would almost certainly raise their game. This quibble aside, ‘Yourself’ in particular is convincing. ***

GEOFF CARNE & THE RAW ROX BAND River Of Dreams EP www.geoffcarne.com [Release date 26.04.24]

Geoff Carne is one of those reliable blues/rock artists churning out the occasional EP and evidently having a bit of fun. He’s not averse to passing comment either on the state of the world (‘Insanity’) or a younger generation stuck in their bedrooms (‘On Your Feet Boy’) In this, yes, he could be construed as an old fart but he may have a point.

Musically this is a more rocky outing and if overall the EP will score no points for originality it is served up with undoubted passion and is very likeable. ***1/2

Album review: A TREEHOUSE WAIT – Kaleidoscope

A TREEHOUSE WAIT - Kaleidoscope

Volkoren [Release date 25.05.24]

Singer songwriter Jenny Gajicki and producer Emil Sydhage have come together again for this latest piece of Scandi Noir (their debut ‘Interlude’ was in 2016).

Jenny has a vocal delivery not dissimilar to the late Dolores O’Riordan and in fact the vibe is like a hybrid Cranberries/First Aid Kit if a bit less animated . She has an electro pop background and ‘Kaleidoscope’ combines folky pop, electronica and gentle dance beats.

Among the standouts, ‘Is There Anybody Out There (ITAOt) ‘ a tale of being lost and lonely in “a messed up world” whilst the title track is about the complexities in a relationship and how reassuringly “it will be alright”. ‘All Of Me’ on the other hand describes a more straightforward surrender.

This appealing album needs a wider audience. ****

Album review: BLUE ÖYSTER CULT – Ghost Stories

Frontiers [Release date 12.04.24]

Blue Öyster Cult have always been an enigma and this ‘new’ album continues that trend, or as the press blurb states – “This highly anticipated album marks a fitting finale to the recording legacy of one of rock’s most iconic fixtures from the past 50 years.”

‘Ghost Stories’ is a collection of reimagined and newly completed songs that span from 1978-2016. These songs were originally recorded between 1978 and 1983 with the band’s original audio engineer George Geranios, except for one track from 2016, ‘If I Fell’. Also included is the only known studio recording of their live staple, the MC 5 classic ‘Kick Out The Jams’.

Blue Öyster Cult like to lead where others follow and this album utilises AI, as some of the material is from sessions workshopping material for an album, whilst some is from performance rehearsals. These were later transferred to digital audio, which is when AI and the musical talents met and the collection of vintage multi-track recordings was de-mixed, re-mixed, and produced by Steve Schenck and Richie Castellano.

Recording wise these songs feature Richie Castellano along with remaining original members Eric Bloom and Donald ‘Buck Dharma’ Roeser. Former drummers Albert Bouchard and Rick Downey both appear with additional overdubs recorded by Joe Bouchard. The late Allen Lanier, the band’s original keyboards and rhythm guitar player, also features on the album.

Pick of the album is ‘Don’t Come Running To Me’, with Eric Bloom on vocals and a song that dates from the band’s ‘Revolution By Night’ album period. ’Shot In The Dark’ is a good tune, written by Albert Bouchard and sung by Eric Bloom, with a classy Buck Dharma guitar solo.

Blue Öyster Cult do the Beatles on ‘If I Fell’, an acoustic number with Buck Dharma and Richie Castellano on vocals.

‘Late Night Street Fight’ and ‘Kick Out The Jams’ are decent enough. ‘Cherry’ is one of those rollicking rock ‘n’ rollers that Buck Dharma does so well. The Joe Bouchard and Helen Wheels co-write ‘Gun’ is another with that classic BOC sound, possibly from around the time of the ‘Mirrors’ or ‘Cultösaurus Erectus’ albums? However, we have songs like ‘Money Machine’ and ‘Soul Jive’ which would have been best left ‘lost’!

Only 41 minutes in length which is just over half an hour when you take out the three covers. Shame we couldn’t have had an added few classics from the band’s 50th anniversary shows just to make it a bit better value.

One for the fans and really hope it isn’t their last studio recordings as after 2020′s magnificent comeback ‘The Symbol Remains’, ‘Ghost Stories’ seems more of sneaking out the back door rather than blowing the front doors off. ***

Single review: HATS OFF GENTLEMEN IT’S ADEQUATE – One Word That Means The World (Arkhipov)

HOGTA

Bandcamp

Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate – Malcolm Galloway (vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and producer) and Mark Gatland (bass, backing vocals, keyboards and co-producer) – are back with a new single, ‘One World That Means The World (Arkhipov)’. It is the first single from the band’s eighth studio album ‘The Uncertainty Principle’, due to be released later in the year.

The song was inspired by the refusal of Soviet naval officer Vasily Arkhipov (1926-1998) to agree to an action that could have led to nuclear war. During the Cuban missile crisis, Arkhipov was the chief of staff of a flotilla of diesel powered submarines armed with nuclear torpedoes. He was stationed on the submarine B-59. The decision to launch nuclear torpedoes against the United States Navy required the agreement of all three onboard officers. Arkhipov refused to authorise the launch that had been approved by the other two officers. He was described by Thomas Blanton, director of the US National Security Archive as “the man who saved the world”.

This is at the more ‘popular’ end of Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate music, in that it is short and fits that old phrase, “made for radio”. The lyrics give this historic event a new lease of life, along with a sumptuous guitar solo.

Being proper old school, Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate add a B-side in the instrumental ‘Music For Dancing’. It is a tune to certainly get the feet tapping being a winning mix of piano/synths matched against guitar and rhythmic bass.

In these current dark times let’s hope there is another Vasily Arkhipov out there for all our sakes.

Album review : THE CRYIN’ SHAMES – Please Stay, Joe Meek’s Tea Chest Tapes

Cherry Red [Release date: 12.04.24]

The Cryin’ Shames were late to the Merseybeat party, and departed almost as soon as they arrived.

This a 2 CD reissue of every recording made by the band in its various guises. 48 tracks in all.

They were a very young band who had been taken under the wing of music production innovator, Joe Meek, in 1966. He produced the band’s minor hit, ‘Please Stay’. A song written by Burt Bacharach, and originally a US hit for the Drifters in 1961.

After turning down a management offer from Brian Epstein (gulp!), the band splintered, reforming after some key line up changes.

Again they recorded with Meek, and again they chose another classy song as their next single. ‘September In The Rain’, was written by the Tin Pan Alley pair, Warren and Dubin for thirties’ movie musical ‘Melody For Two’, and had now become a “standard”.

Maybe the effect had been diluted … the song had been covered by so many artists, from Peggy Lee to Brenda Lee. From Frank Sinatra to Rod Stewart, and by a few dozen others. To their credit, the band, guided by Meek in the studio, managed to bring the nostalgia at the heart of the song to life.

Much of the rest of this 2 CD anthology will be of huge interest to aficionados and pop music historians.

The artists who broke through in the sixties were creating a new normal for popular music, worldwide. No surprise then that the Cryin Shames’ audition tape covers many of the songs charting around that time: ‘She Belongs To Me’ (Bob Dylan, 1965); ‘Mr Tambourine Man’ (The Byrds, 1965); ‘Gloria’ (Van Morrison/Them, 1964); ‘Land Of 1000 Dances’ (Wilson Pickett, 1966); ‘My Girl’ (Smokey Robinson, 1964); ‘As Tears Go By’ (The Stones, 1964), and so on.

These complete the first CD.

And for die-hard followers, the second CD is where the real treasure lies.

It’s chocka with multiple edits of the singles released by the band in its short lifetime. A paradise for fans, bringing new meaning to the words “thorough” and “complete” (and maybe “obsessive”). ‘Please Stay’ has 3 versions: a “no overdubs”; an “overdubs only, Take 2”, and an “alternate version”.

There are two versions of the band’s Freakbeat classic, ‘Come On Back’, and four versions of ‘Nobody Waved Goodbye’, which we won’t list. All well documented online.

The icing on the cake though, is three tracks that have survived the years since they appeared on BBC Radio’s Saturday Club. Two of them, ‘Circles’ and ‘Shake’, in 45 RPM vinyl have unsurprisingly become collector’s items.

Memories are made of this. ***

Album review: JJ GREY & MOFRO – Olustee

Alligator [Release date 23.02.24]

JJ Grey & Mofro’s tenth album ‘Olustee’ is a heartfelt journey through the musical swamp lands of North Florida, though the various story telling themes routed in the past, present and fired by his fertile imagination, give it an appeal well beyond his NorFlo region.

It’s a soulful swampy album that straddles funk, blues, rock, gospel and old school R&B.

A wide musical array of styles is frequently framed by a supportive horn section which effortlessly shifts from finely honed arrangements to up-tempo stabs, while the occasional use of subtle strings and orchestration gives the album moments of unexpected grandeur.

Grey is an emotive and versatile singer whose uses his full range from baritone to falsetto as the song demands.

He’s also a multi instrumentalist who places himself at the centre of a story telling roots album.

Both he and his band consistently serve the song, only stretching out when the moment demands it, while the individual songs serve the album’s greater whole.

This is particularly important as the musical diversity here demands much of the listener, but promises rich reward.

Put simply, the more you listen and immerse yourself in Grey’s emotional commitment and musical oeuvre, the more the sonic detail sparkles and the lyrics resonate.

He sets out his stall on the poetic opener ‘I Belong To The Sea’.  It’s the kind of sensory-driven song with a startling vocal that he later revisits on ‘Starry Night’, as he revels in an  ability to transfer his appreciation of nature into songs.

It also illustrates his ability to make the music evoke a descriptive lyrical line such as:  “Laying on the sand, feeling every grain, A billion points of light, along the Milky Way.”

It’s the way the way he channels the emotional set-up into a moving chorus that sets him apart from many of his contemporaries;

“Because I belong to the Sea,
Oh she’s out there somewhere calling me.”

He also uses his falsetto range on ‘Starry Night’, which is a soulful ballad with horns strings and bv’s.

Then there’s the retro soul ballad called ‘Waiting’, which reminds me of J.D. Loudermilk’s ‘Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye’ – the Bettye Swann version – crossed with those moments when Todd Rundgren got soulful.

There is of course a significant counterbalance to all this introspection, with several ebullient tracks, including the celebratory gospel feel of ‘Top Of The World’, which encourages us to immerse ourselves in the moment, while ‘On A Breeze’ uses a combination of acoustic guitar and horns ‘to give it an uplifting feel.

The arrangement matches the song title perfectly, and you feel as if you are being whisked upwards on a breeze.

JJ has a very interesting relationship between his music and the lyrics, in as much as each new musical exploration feels as if he’s revealing another part of a bigger picture, while his lyrics often seem to bring him back to a contemplative mood.

He conjures up filmic snap shots, triggered by his imagination or personal and second generation stories.

There’s rarely any suggestion of value judgements, except perhaps on the musically re-arranged cover of John Anderson’s  lament, ‘Seminole Wind’, on which he uses horns instead of an original fiddle line, which arguably gave the original lyrical chronology an extra emotional musical charge;

“Progress came and took its toll,
And in the name of flood control,
They made they plans to drain the land,
Now the glades is going dry.”

In Grey’s hands, he lets the song breathe more, from opening piano line to a sumptuous horn solo and an anthemic finish,  which gives the opening two lines of the chorus extra purchase;

“So blow, blow Seminole wind’

Blow like you’re never gonna blow again.”

He repeats the use of a significant solo with an extended ripping guitar break which closes the title track.

Again he creates a tension via some spiky rhythm guitar, a portentous wailing harp and a growled vocal to evoke the feel of rapidly spreading forest fires.

And just when you think you have his measure, he surprises us with the high energy funk of the Sly Stone influenced ‘Free High’, and the brusque, pulsating funk and swagger of ‘Rooster’, a tale of historic patriacrchy, full of horns stabs, handclaps, and a ‘call and response’ section between his breathy vocal and girly bv’s.

Everything flows seamlessly into the meditative ‘Deeper Than Belief’, which rounds off the album with real feel.

He sings it with total conviction to emphasize every nuance of a wonderfully crafted song and lyrics that put a cap on everything that’s gone before:

“Through all space and time and thought and mind
I’m holding on, deeper than belief.”

There’s an inherent integrity and honesty about JJ Grey’s songwriting, admirable qualities which on their own don’t necessarily make for great music.

It’s the way he readily taps into his own emotions and channels them via his road tested band that gives the album a soulful heart with a jagged edge. It’s a combination that makes for great roots music and an album you will want to revisit. ****

Gig review: JOE BONAMASSA – Royal Albert Hall, London, 4 April 2024

JOE BONAMASSA - Royal Albert Hall, London, 4 April 2024

As he told us midway through the set, it’s now 15 years since the relatively inexperienced Joe Bonamassa gambled in following in the footsteps of his blues rock heroes at the Royal Albert Hall.

It capped a meteoric rise, just a few short years after our own Pete Feenstra brought him to less auspicious venues like Beards Blues and the Boom Boom Club, but his popularity has been sustained and just like Eric Clapton his name has become synonymous with shows here, in this case a brace of UK dates constituting the extent of a whistle stop tour after playing the ‘provinces’ last year.

As always with Mr B, music takes precedence over showmanship and wearing a trademark sharp dark suit it was straight to business, with the opening half of the set focusing heavily on his recent ‘Blues Deluxe Volume 2’, and therefore allowing him to trawl a broader variety of blues related styles than might normally be the case.

JOE BONAMASSA - Royal Albert Hall, London, 4 April 2024

So opener ‘Hope You Realise It (Goodbye Again’) was a slice of Ray Charles-like R’n’B with Joe trading solos with organ maestro Reese Winans, and unselfishly pointing at his sparring partner to ensure the crowd gave him full credit.

Bobby Bland’s ’24 hour Blues’ was more stately yet still featured an electrifying solo from Joe, while ‘Well I Done Got Over It’ had a  traditional Chicago blues feel, but again with plenty of fiery guitar playing. ‘Self-Inflicted Wounds’ boasted a full, rich sound with gospel style vocals from Danni D’Andrea and Jade MacRae, the latter even taking a  solo slot at the end.

Since I last saw him here in 2019 there had been a few line up changes with bassist Calvin Turner (succeeding the late Michael Rhodes) and drummer Lemar Carter both unfussy but precise and worthy bandmates. ‘I Want To Shout About It’, another with an R’n’B and soul feel, broken down and including a crowd clapalong, featured a solo from second guitarist Josh Smith, extremely talented in his own right.

JOE BONAMASSA - Royal Albert Hall, London, 4 April 2024

‘The Last Matador of Bayonne’ was certainly a showcase for Joe, his underrated vocals only bringing out the haunting sparseness, even desolation, of the arrangement and an epic guitar solo where each note seemed to be held for ages. However ‘Breaking Up Somebody Else’s Home’ illustrated the way he generously shared the limelight from time to time with Josh, who played the first solo before a lengthy one from Joe, superbly technical yet always melodic.

He also seemed more relaxed and comfortable as a performer than when I last saw him, epitomised by his trademark mid-set speech sardonically relating his experiences with an unhelpful customs officer.

JOE BONAMASSA- Royal Albert Hall, London, 4 April 2024

The rest of the set felt more archetypally Bonamassan, starting with ‘The Heart That Never Waits’, a lively Texas-style blues, but with a mid-section where he took the band down to virtual silence. ‘Is It Safe To Go Home’ saw his guitar and Reese’s electric piano do battle before another remarkable long solo, yet one where he always seemed in utter control.

After a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Lazy Poker Blues’, Reese trading lines mainly with Josh on a 12-bar, as if by some invisible force, the whole of the seated floor – and indeed a few in the stands – rose to their feet as Joe  played the unmistakable riff to ZZ Top’s ‘Just Got Paid’. It’s a song where over the years he has achieved the unlikely feat of taking it to a different scale, and sure enough became a full on rock jam, complete with the briefest of snatches of How Many More Times, some of his trademark playing stances and a drum solo.

Surprisingly that was the end of the main set already, but opening the encores he paid tribute to a much-missed friend and collaborator in Bernie Marsden. As a result- despite hinting he was tiring of playing it every night and wanted to drop it- he played the latter’s favourite ‘Sloe Gin’, which was an object lesson in how to gradually build tension and intensity, concluding in an epic solo.

JOE BONAMASSA - Royal Albert Hall, London, 4 April 2024

In time I am sure the next generation of would-be blues rock guitar heroes will adopt that song as a standard (maybe they already do?), but in an unexpected close, Joe paid tribute to his own influences with an authentic cover of ‘Crossroads’, as accomplished as you would expect and with Reese and Josh both given solos before he of course had the last word, ending a set a little shorter than previous efforts at exactly two hours.

Yes, it is possible to quibble at the event high ticket prices encouraging an older and corporate audience at the expense of younger fans looking for inspiration. However no-one present left feeling short-changed by the quality of a perfectionist right at the absolute peak of his game.

Album review: EMERSON, LAKE & POWELL – Complete Collection

EMERSON, LAKE & POWELL - Complete Collection

Spirit of Unicorn Music [Release date 12.04.24]

Emerson Lake & Palmer had imploded by the mid-eighties and the age of prog and pomp ceremony was seemingly over. In the late seventies there had been a last flourish of excess with ELP playing several dates with an orchestra. 1978′s ‘Love Beach’ was a more accessible offering with less of the bombast of the original band but dismayed hardcore fans. A few more years ensued before Keith Emerson and Greg Lake enlisted Cozy Powell, reinstating the ELP moniker although in different guise. (Carl Palmer was now with Asia and had enjoyed a best selling debut album in 1982).

The new configuration only released one self-titled album which appears here as part of a three-CD box set boosted by two B-sides – the fun ‘The Loco-Motion’ and ‘Vacant Possession’ (previously available on some CD versions) – and a single edit of ‘The Score’ the album’s opening piece.

The album is interesting for Powell’s contribution and includes ‘Touch And Go’ and the poppy ‘Love Blind’ with Lake sounding very like John Wetton. It features more of the ELP vibe of old and the more so with Gustav Holst’s ‘Mars, The Bringer Of War’,  although I couldn’t stop thinking about Dr.Who.  On the live set this merges with the ubiquitous “drum solo”…

The other two discs include’The Sprocket Sessions’ which circulated for many years as a bootleg and consists of rehearsal versions of most album tracks with the addition of several from the classic back catalogue.

The live set was recorded in November 1986 in Florida and includes a mixture of the album and selected older pieces such as ‘Lucky Man’, the perhaps inevitable ‘Fanfare For The Common Man’ and ‘Karn Evil’ plus a nod to Emerson’s early incarnation with The Nice (‘America’ and ‘Rondo’).

Collectors should be aware that a two-CD set was released in 2012 which featured the material on the two additional discs whilst ‘The Sprocket Sessions’ was released as a standalone disc in 2006.

Prog magazine editor Jerry Ewing’s liner places the band and the album in context but perhaps surprisingly much of his information can be gleaned from Wikipedia, and almost verbatim. There is scant detail about the additional discs. Half a star docked for this unless of course Ewing is a closet Wikipedia editor. ***1/2

Single review : KURT FROLICH – Another Heartbreak

Golden Robot Records [05.04.24]

Single release from Kurt Frolich, vocalist with Riley’s LA Guns.

It has only a passing resemblance to the music of his parent band.
Doesn’t make him a bad person, of course. In fact …

The first thing you’ll notice is the welcoming warmth of the production. The next perhaps will be the way in which this tale of fractured relationships appears to be framed in youthful optimism. The jury’s still out on that one.

And of course, Frolich’s vocals, ribboned with melancholy, do a persuasive job of matching style with substance, gloriously reminiscent of Power Pop’s most hypnotic moments, bringing to mind The Raspberries.

Frolich’s lovelife problems are never resolved in the song, and so its poppy immediacy exists alongside a deeper unease. It’s like we’re listening to the first chapter of a longer story. Roll on the album. ***

Single review : RHAPSODY OF FIRE – Brave New Hope

AFM Records [out now]

Rhapsody Of Fire’s vocalist, Giacomo Voli sounds more like Brother Firetribe’s Pekka Heino every day. Or maybe it’s the other way round. Those expressive vocals, bringing a lyric to life, are hard to match.

‘Brave New Hope’ is the first teaser trailer from the band’s forthcoming album (their 14th), Challenge The Wind, due out next month.

It’s a good choice, illustrating just why songwriter, keyboard player, band leader, producer, Alex Staropoli has come to be described as Melodic Symphonic Metal’s “Film Score Composer”.
His spine tingling orchestrations are the perfect backdrop to Voli’s “reach for the stars” vocals.
It’s glorious stuff, packing a considerable melodic punch, with Staropoli maintaining a strong producer’s grip on the soaring choruses.

A truly magnificent listen. ****

Album review: THUNDER – The Magnificent Seventh, Robert Johnson’s Tombstone, Bang! (reissues)

THUNDER - The Magnificent Seventh

BMG [Release date 04.04.24]

The latest batch of Thunder reissues span the years 2005-2008. All are available on vinyl for the first time.

In 2005 the band released their seventh studio album called, appropriately enough, ‘The Magnificent Seventh’. It was the band’s first after vocalist Danny Bowes and Luke Morley had taken some time out to release a joint effort ‘Mo’s Barbeque’.

Typically with Thunder this was a high standard consistent offering including the highlights ‘I Love You More Than Rock ‘N’ Roll’, ‘Fade Into The Sun’ and ‘One Fatal Kiss.’ This latest reissue adds four live versions recorded in Manchester (2012) and Shepherd’s Bush Empire (2005) the latter also included on the Rough And Ready set in 2010. ****

Thunder reissues - April 2024

You may have thought 2006′s ‘Robert Johnson’s Tombstone’ would have the band visiting the blues but, no, this is another straightforward Thunder offering. The highlights include ‘The Devil Made Me Do It’ and Zeppelin-esque ‘Last Man Standing’. The album perfectly blends the band’s ear for a catchy chorus and mix of hard rock, soulful undertow, and heartfelt acoustic ballads such as ‘My Darkest Hour’ complete with cello accompaniment.

The Japanese edition of the original album included four bonus tracks, two of which were session outtakes. Only one of these appears in this latest iteration (‘I’m In Heaven’) but there is a different “session track” ‘Don’t Worry About Forever’ (originally a single B-side) along with two contemporaneous live tracks. ****1/2

2008′s ‘Bang!’ preceded the band’s second “split”. GRTR!’s Jason Ritchie wrote “One of the band’s finer efforts”. It features the opener ‘On The Radio’ (also included as a live bonus), the folksy ‘Retribution’ and soulful crunch of ‘Miracle Man’.

The Japanese version included the track ‘Chain Reaction’ and ‘I Believe’ (from the ‘Six Of One’ EP) but omitted here whilst ‘See My Baby Walking’ and a different mix of ‘I Believe’ are from ‘The Joy Of Six’ EP.   The live tracks come from two previously released Christmas shows at Rock City, Nottingham 2007/8.  ****

All albums reflect the production and writing talents of Luke Morley who has a great ear for melody but also cranking out a very acceptable riff when needed.

During this period the band had released several now out-of-print EPs (which made up a box set) and it’s a shame that these reissues, although “expanded”, couldn’t have come with a second EP disc. Apart from that vinyl junkies will welcome these first time releases in their chosen format, the CD versions come as digpaks but with no illuminating liner notes. All in all, though, it’s a good way of reintroducing these works to new fans and filling the void with the band currently on hiatus.

Album review: BEAUX GRIS GRIS & THE APOCALYPSE – Hot Nostalgia Radio

Beaux Gris Gris & The Apocalyse - Hot Nostalgia Radio

Grow Vision [Release date 03.05.24]

And suddenly everybody is rediscovering their pop roots.

In many ways Beaux Gris Gris’s ‘Hot Nostalgia Radio’ is the perfect title for an album which celebrates the art of songwriting and is fuelled by the engine room of music virtuosity.

The combination of the two pushes the band further into their extant cross-genre approach, an eclecticism which also takes in swaggering rock and roll with a punk attitude.

What makes this album different is the change of gear on the last five tracks.

They approach moments of soulful introspection as part of a shift into country and Americana roots music. The story telling narratives ultimately lead Greta back to her Louisiana roots.

This is also an album on which the band sees independent music as a badge of honour. There’s a ‘can do’ spirit, as part of an organic approach in which their inherent adventurous spirit leads them to a number of colourful diversions, all from the sepia-into- gothic tinged pen of vocalist Greta Valenti.

Guitarist Robin Davey is provides the perfect foil with sparkling guitar work and an array of interesting tones which always support the song.

Bassist Stephen Mildwater and drummer Tom Rasulo provide the perfect rhythmic foundation, with Chris Cunningham adding bass on ‘Marie’.

Sam Robertson also doubles on various keyboards and accordion to give the band an extra layer of sonic splendour.

I make no apology for reviewing this album in a straight chronological order, as it reflects a subtly evolving work which ebbs and flows as it takes in sundry influences.

Everything has a place, from the opening exclamatory titled ‘Oh Yeah!’ – an impressive slice of autobiographical rock and roll and the title of which recalls the ‘yeah yeah’ 60’s French pop era – to the closing autobiographical ‘Mama Cray’, complete with accordion accompaniment.

They extend the opening bluster on the affirmatory stomp of ‘Wild Wild Woman’ and the heavier riff-driven, gothic tinged lead single ‘Satisfy Your Queen.’

Their keen sense of dynamics leads them into The B52’s style ‘I Told My Baby’.

The song is fattened by Davey’s hypnotic interwoven guitar work and drone sounds, all neatly offset by Robertson’s 60’s Farfisa, as part of an imposing wall of sound, topped by another infectious hook.

The album then veers towards groove laden 60’s pop and soul on the funky ‘Middle Of The Night’ – with nicely contrasts the horns with a stinging guitar tone – and the excellent Smoky Robinson influenced ‘Sad When I’m Dancing’.

The emphasis is wholly on song craft and Greta’s vocals, which are easily the best of her career.

She’s fearless on the soulful ballad ‘All I Could Do Was Cry’. She sings it with such gusto that her emotive and tremulous top line perfectly evokes the song title.

They stay in ballad mode on the outstanding ‘The Runaway’, an uplifting radio friendly song on which the musical accompaniment intuitively supports her aching vocal, into a sweeping hook.

The song has a subtle slow build, with a gently voiced piano, accordion and organ leading to an exhilarating flanger guitar finish.

It’s a high point of an album which changes direction again on a succession of  alt.country into Americana material.

The sumptuous groove, percussive snap and emotive vocal of ‘Harder To Breathe’ is a cool example of prosody, on which the vocal and musical accompaniment (including eerie slide) perfectly evoke the song title.

The mid-tempo stomping shuffle of ‘Don’t Let Go’ has an annoyingly familiar melody, perhaps ELO’s ‘Kuiama’, but I’ll probably remember and source it after writing this review!

The shift to Country is more salient on the story telling ‘Penny Paid Rock Star’ and the emotive ‘Marie’ which crosses over from Country to Americana, before the invigorating New Orleans shuffle beat of ‘Let It Ride’, complete with another catchy hook.

They round things off with ‘Mama’s Cray’ a New Orleans style, accordion-driven, autobiographical narrative with a sing-along chorus.

The latter represents a natural geographical and musical book-end to a superbly crafted album with a Well Hung Heart (pun intended). ****

Album review : BLOODBOUND – The Tales Of Nosferatu – Two Decades Of Blood (CD and DVD)

AFM Records [Release date : 19.04.24]

It was 20 years ago today that Swedish keyboard player Fredrik Bergh and guitarist Tomas Olsson jumped the genre ship from AOR to Power Metal.

They left behind popular melodic rock band, Street Talk, to found new kids on the heavy metal block, Bloodbound. The transition could not have been smoother.

The debut album, Nosferatu (2005), saw them stake a groundshaking claim to a sizeable chunk of Power Metal territory. The birth of that new band is being celebrated here.

The Tales Of Nosferatu – Two Decades Of Blood is a Live album, a CD and DVD Blu-ray package, a document in sound of the band’s acclaimed set at the Masters Of Rock Festival last year.

The transition was not without its problems of course, creating a sound from scratch is never easy. It took a few albums before the band truly found its metier. Consequently, 9 of the 13 tracks come from the band’s 4 most recent albums, showcasing the memorably melodic Power Metal we now take for granted.

The sound of the Festival’s heavy metal multitude initially seems detached from the music being played onstage. But it’s just a matter of tuning in, as moments later a Mexican wave of noise rolls through the crowd in a delayed action frenzy of enthusiasm.

Heads down, hi speed Power Metal anthems abound, all seemingly cut from the same richly textured cloth. ‘Tales From The North’, ‘Slayer Of Kings’ and ‘Drink With The Gods’ mix celtic flavours with adrenalised, “foot on the monitor” metal, vocalising the myth and mystery at the core of Viking Metal.

The band’s sideways move into medieval fantasy metal is signalled by ‘The Warlocks Trail’, from Rise Of The Dragon Empire (2019), and ‘Battle In The Sky’, from War Of Dragons (2017).

There’s clear connection there with the hugely popular books and TV series, “Game Of Thrones”. Commercial opportunism you might think, and why not?

And let’s face it, the band has the crowd in the palm of its hand: it’s loving it, enjoying every moment, applauding every move, belting out every chorus. Having fun. That’s the point. ****

This reviewer enjoyed Phil Thornalley’s last album, 2022′s ‘Now That I Have Your Attention’, a veritable musical delight for fellow lovers of ELO, Tom Petty and all things Jeff Lynne related. On this album Phil Thornalley continues to produce wonderfully melodic tunes that tip a musical hat at ELO, Travelling Wilburys and the much missed Jellyfish.

It will come as no surprise that label mates on Lojinx include the likes of Graham Gouldman and the Lickerish Quartet, both artists who know how to pen a decent melody and lyric. As Phil Thornalley says of this album, “…I wanted to have fun lyrically with the concept of ‘fame’, the ‘lust for glory’ but deliver it with some good old fashioned tunes and some self deprecating humour”.

Opening the album with ‘Holly Would Love (Suite)’ sets the standard high, as it features all manner of musical magic, along with strings that would keep the most ardent 70s ELO fan happy. These are all performed on the album by cellist Karl McComas-Reichl.

‘Failing Upwards’ has a wonderful late 80s/early 90s Tom Petty vibe, whilst ‘When The Riots Start’ could well be a long lost Travelling Wilburys song. Phil Thornalley may have a sound that recalls other artists, yet he has his own style, most notably with his soothing, melodious vocal and a deft and witty lyrical touch.

‘Drive, Baby Drive’ harks back to the 60′s rock ‘n’ roll of Roy Orbison, whilst ‘Golden Age’ is an ironic look at being an independent musician in the modern age – ‘You get a cent for a million streams’. The guitar solo is a thing of beauty.

‘How To Marry A Millionaire’ is one for radio, combining witty lyrics and a string fuelled melody that recalls ELO at their peak. Why songs like this aren’t better known is a travesty.

‘Shipwrecked Love’, ‘Christmas Lights’ and ‘Mr. Moonlight’ have been released ahead of the album (and all feature non-album songs worth checking out). Of these ‘Mr. Moonlight’ is the stand out, from the vocal effects through to the strings and clear cut drums, it is two minutes and forty seconds of pure melodic pop bliss.

We are lucky that the likes of Phil Thornally, Miracle Mile and the Lickerish Quartet continue to produce lovingly crafted pop music. As the main man himself states,

“Somehow I keep writing songs and making records. My family, dating back a few generations, has a habit of being crafty, making things – wheelwrights, coffin makers, seamstresses . I just happen to make records.

I love the whole process, from that light bulb tune that illuminates my imagination in the kitchen to the last drum fill of the recording’s finale. I hear it all. I can somehow play most of it all. And luckily I’m in a position to make those songs come alive. 40 odd years of humming, drumming and strumming’s got to be good for something. Hope you like it.”

We do like it Phil. We like it a lot and another album that will make my year end albums list with ease. ****1/2

Gig review: MR. BIG- Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 23 March 2024

MR. BIG- Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 23 March 2024

Mr.Big’s last UK tour was here six years ago and when original drummer Pat Torpey passed away months later, the band were effectively put on ice. However the surviving three members have decided to go out one more time, with Spock’s Beard’s Nick D’virgilio on drums continuing the highest standards of musicianship we associate with the band.

The set was an exercise in pure nostalgia rather than an attempt to prove continuing relevance with not a single song from the three post reunion albums in the 2000s and featuring ‘ Lean Into It’ ’in full. After a rather spotty debut, considering the pedigree of the musicians involved, this sophomore album from 1991 is that rarity, an album without filler and their most consistent and accomplished as well as easily their biggest selling, though one particular and atypical song had much  to do with that…

For a band with a modest profile over here their shows always seem to sell better than I expect , probably owing to the followings virtuoso instrumentalists Billy Sheehan and Paul Gilbert have in their own right, and the 2000-capacity Shepherds Bush Empire sold out some weeks before.

MR. BIG- Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 23 March 2024

A familiar figure on the UK gig scene for many years, Wisconsin native Jared James Nichols, opened up. Sporting a slightly shorter hairstyle these days, and leading a very tight power trio, his stock in trade is still supercharged blues rock in the mould of Pat Travers and Johnny Winter, but he has diversified a little since I last saw him pre-pandemic.

Opener ‘Easy Come Easy Go’ had a lively commercial edge and among reliable rockers like ‘Down the Drain’ and ‘Skin and Bone’, ‘Threw Me to the Wolves’ had a looser, funkier feel meaning that a brief extract of the Stones ‘Miss You’ was fully in keeping.

Time constraints meant a shorter set than many of his on the tour ended with his trademark and authentic cover of ‘Mississippi Queen’. With his infectious enthusiasm and hundred per cent effort he is always an easy act to warm to.

MR. BIG- Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 23 March 2024

As for Mr. Big, the UK tour had not begun smoothly with some form of ‘lurgy’ failing Eric Martin’s voice, to the extent that there were reports of disillusioned fans leaving the shows early.  However rather than ignore the elephant in the room, or pull the tour, with commendable honesty he chose a third way, drafting in Michele Luppi as an additional singer.

As well as singing with a Mr Big tribute act the Italian’s spell in Whitesnake gave him the perfect experience to provide back up. The two did not duet as such but his supporting vocals reinforced Eric’s and kept the sound authentic at times when he skipped lines or was sounding rough. Though he was in the shadows next to the drum kit, and not introduced (rather gracelessly I thought) the arrangement worked a treat and ensured any vocal shortcomings did not prove a distracting talking point. The singer, whose hair has grown out somewhat, was his usual genial self though I struggled to interpret some of his quirky and rapid fire  between song banter.

MR. BIG- Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 23 March 2024

‘Addicted To That Rush’ was moved from a more traditional end of set position to open and from my balcony vantage point there was an encouraging number of fists punching the air.  ‘’Take Cover’ was dedicated to Pat Torpey while ‘Price You Gotta Pay’ showed their bluesier side with Paul on slide and Billy harmonica.

The ‘Lean Into It’ section was delivered not only to the album running order but in a manner pretty faithful to the originals with no embellishments.  That meant three in a row of crowd favourites that feature on every Mr Big set in ‘Daddy, Brother, Lover,Little Boy’, complete with a blink and you miss it electric drill playing from the pair, ‘Alive and Kicking’ and ‘Green Tinted Sixties Mind’. The latter was a particularly good illustration of the effortless arpeggios and melodic solos of Paul Gilbert, even if his new image of thick glasses and sharp skinny suit had me reaching for Elvis Costello comparisons.

MR. BIG- Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 23 March 2024

Their precise vocal harmonies were to the fore on ‘Lucky This Time’, before the looser, yet still concise, jam feel of ‘Voodoo Koss’. The full album treatment  though is a chance to revisit overlooked gems and that was certainly the case for me with ‘Never Say Never’, even before Eric conducted a swaying of hands to the closing ‘na-na-na’s, and ‘My Kinda Woman’ had apparently not even been played live before this tour. In between I wondered whether Eric might leave the smooth ‘Just Take My Heart’ (imho the greatly superior if lesser selling of the two ballads on the album) to Michele, but he battled through.

‘A Little Too Loose’ introduced some swampy blues to the mix, notably in Billy’s vocal intro and ‘Road To Ruin’ sparkled, before band intros led into the inevitable ‘To Be With You’, the crowd relieving Eric of most of the heavy lifting.

MR. BIG- Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 23 March 2024

In fact the singalongs continued with he and Paul donning acoustic guitars for ‘Wild World’, and only then were the indulgent though entirely forgivable solo slots, Paul on guitar then ‘Colorado Bulldog’, a vehicle for he and Billy to play as fast as possible. The latter’s bass solo led into him singing what surely is his signature song in ‘Shy Boy’.

After mentioning how the band originally formed around a shard love of bands like Free and Humble Pie, ‘30 Days In The Hole’ was  (to pardon the pun) smoking. Albeit to a simpler musical backdrop of a sixties garage rock cover ‘Good Lovin’ they then showed off those musical talents with an instrument swap, Paul looking very comfortable indeed at the drum kit, Nick on guitar, Eric on bass and Billy singing.

MR. BIG- Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 23 March 2024

You could argue that the presence of so many covers exposes the thinness of their own back catalogue, but the way Paul in particular captured so effectively the spirit and nuances of ‘Baba O’Riley’ without the synthesisers and violin!) so prominent in the original is testament to their musical talents.

It has not been a smooth ride, but this show proved the merits of getting the band together one last time, and with further summer dates including Maid Of Stone festival it’s still not too late to see for yourself their legacy of stellar musicianship wrapped in accessible melodic rock packaging.
