Album review: FRANKIE MILLER – Full House and Double Trouble (remasters w/bonus tracks)

Rock Candy Records [Release date 30.07.21]

With 3 outstanding albums under his belt, but no substantial success, you could have forgiven Frankie Miller for just accepting his fate.

Judging by his genre hopping fourth album, Full House, (1978) he never stops long enough in one place to gain any lasting recognition. From the solid pop of ‘Doodle Song’ to the sweetly soulful ‘This Love Of Mine’, to the country flavoured ‘Let The Candle Shine’, Miller’s interpretation of his self penned material is always impressive. And just when you’re looking for more of that, he gives you something else.

Then there’s the covers: You need to be brave or foolish to interpret a John Lennon classic, ‘Jealous Guy’, or a universally recognised standard, ‘Love Letters’. Miller’s almost tangible heartfelt sincerity amplifies the fragile lyrical quality in both songs. He makes them his own. No mean achievement.

That said, it’s opener, ‘Be Good To Yourself’ that really stands out. Up front of a solid, bolted-to-the-floor rhythm section, the precision and depth of guitarist, Ray Minhinnett’s playing is a wonder to behold. His fiery licks elevate this already great Andy (Free) Fraser song way beyond its starting point. And once the Memphis Brass get on board, we’re on a funky, bluesy, rockin’ journey we hope will never end.

This remaster comes with a bunch of live tracks not previously released. If ever a voice was made for live performance, it’s Miller’s. ****

A year later, Miller recorded his fifth album, Double Trouble, at The Record Plant in New York. Jack (Cheap Trick/Aerosmith) Douglas was brought in to produce. Eric (ELO II) Troyer and Steven Tyler help on backing vocals. But beyond Miller, the real star here is Paul (Ace/Squeeze/Mike&The Mechanics) Carrack.

Carrack wrote five of the songs here with Miller. One of their better collaborations, ‘Good Time Love’ is not especially well served by Douglas’s all over the place production. It’s never quite sure if it’s funk, rock, gospel or soul. Yet still, it ultimately emerges as one the album’s most memorable cuts.

Another Andy Fraser song, ‘Double Heart Trouble’ is a swaggering, earthy, best-song-that-Free-never-recorded chunk of bluesy hard rock, it comes bubbling to the surface quickly, setting up the album. But disappointingly, quite a few of the songs are a little too perfunctory to really land. Early hopefuls ‘Love Waves’ and ‘Breakaway’ start strong and fade quickly.

It’s left to a fabulous cover of thirties’ romantic ballad ‘Goodnight Sweetheart’ to close the album in style. A classy, reined in vocal from Miller is perfectly pitched, suggesting that this is a milieu he should have explored further.

Miller fans will love the bonus tracks here. They are all demos, embryo recordings, showing us how it all began. The demo of the Marvin Gaye cover, ‘Stubborn Kind Of Fellow’, full of raw energy, is a peach. ***

Album review: ALL GOOD THINGS – A Hope In Hell

ALL GOOD THINGS – A Hope In Hell

Better Noise Music [Release date 20.08.21]

All Good Things signed with Better Noise Music in 2019 and now they unleash their debut album. All Good Things consists of Dan Murphy (vocals), Andrew Bojanic (guitars, bass, vocals, keyboards, producer), Liz Hooper (bass, vocals, keyboards, producer), Miles Franco (guitars, bass, vocals), and Tim Spier (drums, vocals).

With all five members adding their vocals the band have created some epic vocal soundscapes. The press release mentions gaming and movies, both of which their songs lend themselves too perfectly being rooted in big, epic sounds.

They have already racked up over 100 million streams of ‘For The Glory’, which features a guest spot from the Hollywood Undead. Impressive, as is the song itself, with an instant hook and chorus it soon works its magic on the listener.

It’s not the only song on the album to feature a guest artist as Craig Mabbitt of Escape The Fate appears on ‘The Comeback’. Very melodic, you can see why this one has been chosen as a single.

‘Sirens’ sees the band in heavier mode as the guitars battle with the keys/synths on the main melody. Really impressed by the band’s use of sounds and vocal arrangements. ‘Do It Now’ comes in on a wave of parping horn synths, although the mid song rap from Hyro the Hero may not be for all.

In all the bombast they do bring it down a notch or two on ‘Machines’, one with plenty of effects and vocal wizardry. ‘Undefeated’ you can imagine pumping out in gyms, a proper up and at ‘em anthem.

All Good Things are certainly onto a good thing on their debut album. It will appeal to the younger, core target audience and pick up a few older fans, especially those who like a bit of Shinedown and Imagine Dragons. With plenty of live dates in the US ahead with the likes of P.O.D. the band will continue on the up and up. ****

Gig review: ATOMIC ROOSTER- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 5 August 2021

ATOMIC ROOSTER- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 5 August 2021

For the past 20 years or so the Eel Pie Club have been keeping alive the spirit of the sixties music scene that was so influential in this part of South-West London.

As that decade gave way to the seventies, Atomic Rooster were one of the bands who bridged the psychedelic and progressive scene and the emerging world of heavy rock. In a way they were just as much pioneers as their fellow Hammond organ lovers, the more enduring Deep Purple and Uriah Heep, and even had a couple of major hit singles, yet are rarely talked about or the subject of lavish retrospectives.

ATOMIC ROOSTER- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 5 August 2021

Thankfully, two members from their  ever changing early seventies line ups, singer Pete French and guitarist Steve ‘Bolts’ Bolton, revived the band with the blessing of the widow of founder member Vincent Crane, and have been gigging fairly regularly since 2016.

Both have a strong stage presence-  the guitarist with the spectacular teddy boy’s silver quiff and the singer the charismatic rock frontman, leather trousers included, with more importantly his voice still in excellent shape.

All us live music fans have had to sustain us during the pandemic were a small number of socially distanced and usually unplugged shows from enterprising promoters- indeed I attended those the Eel Pie Club staged. The same applies to bands: this was Atomic Rooster’s first gig for 18 months and a few cobwebs had to be shaken off, but you would never have guessed.

ATOMIC ROOSTER- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 5 August 2021

They opened with ‘Death Walks Behind You’ with a gargantuan riff, just as proto metal as some of Sabbath’s. The only downside during much of the first of two sets was that Pete’s voice was buried down in the mix and it was difficult to pick out the lyrics.

Keyboards  play a central role in the Atomic Rooster sound, a task more than ably filled by Adrian Gautrey, a relative youngster but sporting a suitably retro look of flowing hair and paisley shirt. However all four musicians were virtuosos in their own right: the menacing, funky ‘Black Snake’ had the space in the arrangements to show this to best effect,  while during some of the heavier numbers- notably the instrumentals ‘Vug’ and ‘A Spoonful of Bromide…’ they combined to create an  impressively heavy wall of sound.

ATOMIC ROOSTER- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 5 August 2021

However they showed they could play with equal subtlety on the gentler numbers ‘Nobody Else’ and ‘Decision/Indecision’ – one of a number of their songs to have been used on ‘Life on Mars’.

Things were already looking up as we headed into the interval with ‘Break the Ice’ with its catchy repeated ‘I’m the One’ refrain and the keyboards cutting through almost like chiming church bells, and a sprightly version of their biggest hit ‘Devils Answer’, but with the band jamming out and creating a satisfyingly rich sound.

ATOMIC ROOSTER- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 5 August 2021

The second set kicked off with some classic early seventies heavy rock riffery in ‘Sleeping for Years’. Not all the songs made quite the same impact, but ‘Tomorrow Night’ was another where the original single was beefed up as guitar and organ  jammed off each other in extended fashion, and a closing highlight was the epic ‘Breakthrough’, well known to those of us who have followed Pete fronting the resurrected Leafhound for many years, but this time with the massive Hammond sound giving it a fresh dimension. Indeed I found myself unable to resist a bit of air keyboarding.

There was a solitary encore of ‘Fire’, recognising Vincent Crane’s pre-Rooster origins with the Crazy World of Arthur Brown. It was more musically straightforward than what had gone before but again they gave it a fresh dimension, notably Paul Everett’s relentless military-style drumming.

ATOMIC ROOSTER- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 5 August 2021

This night was always going to be a memorable occasion, watching a full band show again after so long. However it also succeeded on a musical level, with the current line up so successfully reinvigorating the sound of one of early heavy rock’s lost pearls and doing the legacy of Atomic Rooster proud.

Quick plays: HAMISH HAWK, LANGAN FROST & WANE

HAMISH HAWK Heavy Elevator Assai Recordings [Release date 17.09.21]

Hamish Hawk is an Edinburgh-based songwriter who performs solo and as frontman of the New Outfit.

Hamish Hawk possess a rich, warm baritone vocal, perfectly suited for the mellower moments like ‘Vivian Comma’. Not unlike the Divine Comedy say on ‘This, Whatever It Is, Needs Improvements’.

Kudos to any singer who can get ‘The Mauritian Badminton Doubles Champion, 1973’ into a chorus of a song, and a catchy one at that. Unsurprisingly released as a single, as could be ‘Bakerloo, Unbecoming’, another fine piece of upbeat indie pop.

Saving one of the best till last, ‘New Rhododendrons’ is full of musical wonder and another fine example of Hamish’s vocals.

Alt pop? Sometime indie crooner? Who knows what to classify him as, apart from very enjoyable and certainly gained a new fan in this reviewer. ****

Review by Jason Ritchie

LANGAN, FROST & WANE Goldstar Recordings [Release date 23.07.21]

A trio of singer songwriters, namely Brian Langan (The Sw!ms, Needlepoints), RJ Gilligan (Frost) played in rock bands like Dark Web, and Nam Wayne (Wane), got together to create music influenced by late 60’s/early 70’s folk rock and psychedelic pop.

If it wasn’t for the modern production you would think this was some long lost gem from the late 60’s/early 70’s. Songs like the ethereal ‘The Dandelion’ and the simple, yet effective acoustic guitar riff on ‘Everyday Phoenix’ would have been all over the radio shows of the likes of John Peel and Bob Harris back in the day. ‘King Laughter’ is more down the psychedelic pop route of Jellyfish, very enjoyable.

Do give this a few spins as after the first listen I did think it was a tad too twee in parts and verging into folk clichés. However, they have cannily taken a sound from a classic era of music and adapted it to their musical plan. Those who like a bit of 70’s Jethro Tull, the Incredible String Band, Simon & Garfunkel (for their use of vocal harmonies) et al will enjoy this. ***1/2

Book review: Loud ’n’ Proud – 50 Years Of Nazareth by Martin Popoff

Loud ’n’ Proud – 50 Years Of Nazareth by Martin Popoff

Wymer Publishing [Publication date 06.08.21]

Scottish rock legends have been recording for 50 years now, and a book on the band and their fantastic legacy has been long overdue. Their charting days be over (they were chart and Top Of The Pops regulars in the 70s) but they have continued to record and tour, and some of their 80s and 90s releases still get regular plays in this household. Nazareth’s third album Razamanaz remains up there with anything Deep Purple, Uriah Heep and Led Zeppelin put out. Bluesy roots and Dan McCafferty’s trademark gravelly whisky soaked vocals made the band distinctive.

A well known rock writer has been involved, as has a fan and collector who has provided some of the archive pictures.

This is not a regular biography; a coffee table format, it is a thick and heavy book and that has a solid and lovely look and feel. It runs a bit like a diary, after the intro, with dates of important milestones, interspersed with quotes from the band (well, vocalist Dan McCafferty and bassist Pete Agnew, (and a couple from former guitarists Manny Charlton  and Zac Cleminson), and some historic quotes from the band and reviewers taken from archive press. Then there’s a serious quantity of live photos and a few record pics to boot!

As their former fanclub editor, I am well acquainted with the band’s history but what I did find interesting was the pre band history, and the walk through the different line-ups of (pre Nazareth band) The Shaddettes. And what will be new to almost everyone, throughout the book, is the plethora of live photos from across the ages. That’s where the book is excellently produced.

The insight to the band from Dan and Pete is good, they talk about how touring with Deep Purple, the hit singles (Bad Bad Boy, Joni Mitchell’s This Flight Tonight, Love Hurts et al), the comparison to one of their tracks to Deep Purple’s Speed King.

The diary format mentions releases of many singles, but not all, some US, some UK, so while it is useful and interesting, it is not complete or consistent. Sometimes they just need to ask the right people the right questions. And on the discography front, there’s little or no mention of world-wide variations of track listings, artwork or band logo.

Visually the work with Frank Frazette and Rodney Matthews could have been more of, and while a few solo releases (Manny, Billy) are mentioned, the Dan McCafferty track Dreaming (from the Exiled LP) is not mentioned, and it is by far one of his finest performances. And from around the same period, the track Crazy (A Suitable Case For Treatment) from the Heavy Metal soundtrack, but there’s no story (and there are some good ones there; again asking the right people the right questions), but instead there’s a quote from Dan on the heavy metal genre.

Another interesting story is behind Snakes’n’Ladders, the last to feature founder guitarist Manny Charlton. It’s common knowledge the band were fragmented and under record company pressure, and it is widely considered one of their weakest, but the extent of the issues made for informative and insightful reading.

1990s and back came Billy, then in come Jimmy Murrison and Ronnie Leahy, the nearly hiring of Big Country’s guitarist, Darrell Sweet dying on tour, more interesting stories from a period that often gets overlooked.

However, as previously mentioned, some missed opportunities, and that is even more so here; the decade saw three albums that I helped PR, I was in the studio for the recording of one of them, I turned up many records the band had never seen; no mention (and sadly not involved either). The release of a CD of rarities is mentioned, the fact I compiled and co-produced it is not. And into the 2010s and the Linton Osbourne fronted period (and live album) is skipped over.

While there is a great deal missing, whether events, releases or detail, there is also lots to enjoy. There’s something new for everyone no matter how much a fan you are, and the combination of live photos and band quotes is a genuine joy. There are topics the band discuss that they have avoided in the past, so a good read all round.

This is an extensive, essential and enjoyable addition to the archive. As good as it looks, and if you’re a serious fan it’s well worth the money, despite some missed opportunities. I know I’m being picky, but I’ve been there, most fans shouldn’t be worried.

However, my archive features so much more that shall now remain locked away. Given my history with the band and that my offer of writing a book two years ago was shot down in flames, one remains miffed. ****1/2

Album review: DONNIE IRIS AND THE CRUISERS – Remasters

Rock Candy Records [release date 30.07.21]

Back On The Streets (1980)
King Cool (1981)
High And Mighty (1982)
Fortune 410 (1983)

Donnie Iris’s first 4 albums have at last been nailed down by Rock Candy Records. The pursuit has been relentless, but here they now are, fully remastered, each kitted out with at least one bonus track.
And these reissues show us just why 60% of CD sales are back catalogue.

Iris had served a lengthy apprenticeship with Jaggerz and Wild Cherry through the sixties and seventies, notching up the occasional one hit wonder. He met up with kindred spirit, producer/ keyboard player/ songwriter, Mark Avsec, in the late seventies. The duo formed Donnie Iris And The Cruisers.

Squeezing out a sound somewhere between The Cars and Foreigner, the outstanding tracks on the debut album, Back On The Streets (1980) are unquestionably ‘Ah Leah’ and ‘I Can’t Hear You’. These were originally on the LP’s second side, but Rock Candy have repositioned them, quite rightly, as the CD’s first two tracks.
Avsec’s riffs had the elemental punch and simplicity of Elliott Easton circa Shake It Up. And though Iris may have lacked Lou Gramm’s soulful delivery, his cool, mannered vocals added a pop flavoured coating to this and other songs on the album.
The remastering adds clarity and detail, giving the layered vocals depth and polish, bringing up exotic touches, like the calliope styled keyboards to the front of the mix.
The bittersweet title track is framed, very compellingly, as a mini operetta, with
a more lively vocal from Iris.
They spend the rest of the album criss crossing the points at which New Wave, Pop and AOR meet up to compare notes. ****

King Cool came a year later. This title was immediately adopted by fans as their nickname for Iris. It follows him to this day.
The album is a box of delights. Avsec and Iris were truly now totally in sync, confidently displaying their powerpop skills on ‘Sweet Merrillee” and ‘Last To Know’, both sounding like the Wondermints meeting the Police in Brian Wilson’s backyard.
The gleaming, pure pop immediacy of ‘The Promise’ and the supercool, leaning back, ‘My Girl’… a Billboard Top Forty hit, are obvious picks, but the standard doesn’t drop.
King Cool, the album, is peak Donnie Iris. ****1/2

The band’s rock steady, carefully crafted powerpop maintained a massive presence with 1982′s High And Mighty. But it was a relative commercial failure, and this despite favourable contemporary reviews. Discerning critics got it, recognising the irresistible familiarity of the hooky ‘I Wanna Tell Her’ and the ambition of post modern permutations, ‘Parallel Time’ and ‘Tough World’.
Once again, the remastering brings out subtleties lost in the vinyl grooves of the original pressings. Some of these harmonies … 10cc eat your heart out. ***1/2

By 1983′s Fortune 410, the band was still intact. Iris, Avsec, Marty Lee, Albritton McLean and Kevin (Kiss/Shadowking) Valentine were a self evidently tight, collusive combination. ‘Human Evolution’ and ‘Stagedoor Johnny’ are rich in content, each exploring lyrical themes not usually found in “pop” songs.
Though McLean and Lee especially made significant contributions, it’s the closing track ‘Do You Compute’, written by Iris and Avsec, that stands out head and shoulders above the rest. The song’s fusion of hard rock and layered melodies, buoyed by Avsec’s imaginative arrangement, hit the US charts a glancing blow. We are left to ponder just why it wasn’t a huge hit all over the world. ****

Album review: COLIN SCOT – Colin Scot

COLIN SCOT - Colin Scot

Esoteric/Cherry Red [Release date 30.7.21]

It’s more than a little unfair that the late singer-songwriter Colin Scot’s 1971 debut seems to be regarded more for the myriad of guest musicians than for Scot’s own undoubted talent. Reissued on CD for the first time in 15 years, it was originally released by United Artists and produced by John Anthony.

Scot (real name Colin Thistlethwaite) began his career playing the folk clubs. The opening three tracks here are stunning, with the country tinged ‘My Rain’ and the darker ‘Take Me Away’ finely demonstrating his ability as a songwriter. ‘Do The Dance Now, Davey’ is a haunting anti-war song which was written, along with two others here, by Martin Hall.

Scot also tackles songs by Davey Johnstone (the atmospheric ‘The Boatman’), Neil Innes (‘Lead Us’, which features a choir of singers), Mickey Newbury (the bluesy ‘Baby in My Lady’) and Harvey Andrews (the melodic but angry ‘Hey! Sandy’).

Of the other self-penned material, ‘Nite People’ is a real psych-y standout, and another stunner is the fiery ‘Long Time Gone’ which was surprisingly omitted from the original album. It’s here as a bonus track, alongside three alternate takes of album cuts.

The aforementioned musicians include Robert Fripp, Rick Wakeman, Jon Anderson, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Davey Johnstone and Linda Hoyle, as well as members of Van der Graaf Generator, Lindisfarne, Rare Bird and Brinsley Schwarz.

The accompanying booklet features extensive notes, including contributions from several musicians and friends, along with photos and original album artwork. “Lost classic” may be an overused term, but with this album it is more than justified – an early 70’s folk-rock gem from a very underrated artist. ****

EP review: ANDY PARTRIDGE – My Failed Songwriting Career Vol. 1

ANDY PARTRIDGE

Ape House [Release date 23.7.21]

When XTC was put on hiatus following 2000’s “Wasp Star”, Andy Partridge decided it was time to write for other artists. A number of successful co-writes came to fruition (Steven Wilson, Pugwash, Miles Kane), along with a couple of corking tracks written for the reformed Monkees.

However, for a new series of EPs, he is issuing Andy-fied versions of some of the songs that got away – the original demos having been ‘buffed up’ in the studio for our listening pleasure.

He doesn’t reveal who the songs were originally intended for / rejected by, but the accompanying notes make for an interesting read. The opener is the infectious ‘Ghost Train’, a fast and punky number (shades of early XTC) which also has a rockabilly and rock’n’roll vibe.

The lovely ‘Great Day’ is next, with Andy putting his “Macca hat on” after being asked to write a song for a female singer in the style of Paul McCartney. There’s a definite Dukes of Stratosphear feel (XTC’s alter-ego band) to this one.

Next up is a ballad, ‘Maid Of Stars’, which is a collaboration with Chris Braide. The brief for this one was stars and space, and Andy says he is very proud of the lyrics, which are about a medieval maid bathing and creating the universe with spilled milk.

Andy confesses that one of the reasons many of his songs failed to be recorded by others was down to him not writing generic enough material. This certainly applies to the final track here, ‘The Mating Dance’, with the artist’s management citing the lyrics as ludicrous. The offending line in this case was no doubt ‘if you want to get inside their pants, you’re gonna have to learn to do the mating dance’! It’s a fine track, which would have slotted neatly onto one of the latter-day XTC albums. Andy notes that it has a similar groove to Queen’s ‘We Will Rock You’.

Housed in a neat sleeve, with fabulous Andrew Swainson artwork, on the evidence of this first EP, this is going to be a fascinating series – “Fuzzy Warbles”, with a twist! ****

Album review: CHANTEL McGREGOR – Shed Sessions Volume One & Two

CHANTEL McGREGOR - Shed Sessions Volume One

www.chantelmcgregor.com [Release date 12.07.21]

Reasons To Be Cheerful Part 3.  In Chantel McGregor’s case, parts 1 and 2 aka Shed Sessions.  Gather together the fish tank, an acoustic guitar and a tame keyboard player (Jamie Brooks) and you have a ready made concert for lockdown streaming.  McGregor’s never missed a trick or two in terms of self-promotion and tirelessly works social media even if promoting beer, a hamster or her cats.

The two volumes are a nice keepsake of the past twelve months when Chantel has streamed her music every week and split nicely between acoustic and acoustic/electric. Volume One consists of cover versions reflecting fan requests including Neil Young’s ‘Needle And The Damage Done’ and ‘Harvest Moon’ and her own influences including Stevie Nicks (‘Gold Dust Woman’ and ‘Landslide’) and James Taylor.

Without all the preamble and sometimes irritating banter – (or one of the more appealing aspects of the original streams if that’s your bag) – we can just focus on the music.  Re-recorded at home with minimal technical interjection it sounds great.  *****

Volume Two turns up the heat a little bit by adding electric guitar and keyboard giving stripped back versions of her own material including the standouts (‘Walk On Land’ and ‘April’ but no ‘Anaesthesize’ or ‘Screams Everlasting’) and tunes by Tori Amos (‘Winter’) and Steven Wilson (‘Drive Home’, ‘The Raven That Refused To Sing’).  ****1/2

What both volumes reveal is a talented guitarist, yes, but a lovely voice too.  When I reviewed Chantel’s debut album, in 2011, I opined “There is fragility in her songwriting and in her vocal style, which is highly appealing – this may have something to do with her young age but it bodes well also for the future.”

I must admit I wasn’t that impressed with Chantel’s live album – ‘Bury’d Alive’ – feeling that it didn’t represent the excellent show we saw at Giants Of Rock in January 2018 possibly due to the mix quality.

These two albums are, though, a great addition to McGregor’s slightly stop-start album output over the years and will be readily enjoyed by her fanbase.  They remind me of the sort of thing Judie Tzuke has been doing in recent years: home spun, honest, quietly outstanding .

Album review: MIRKA RANTANEN’s CIRCUS OF ROCK – Come One Come All

MIRKA RANTANEN's CIRCUS OF ROCK - Come One Come All

Frontiers [release date 06.08.21]

Circus Of Rock is a multiple guests band … singers, musicians … put together by King Company drummer boy, Mirka Rantanen. The album, Come One Come All is the realisation of a life long ambition, a “dream come true” according to the man himself.

The cheesy “Welcome To The Circus” spoken intro, followed by maniacal, clownish laughter tells you all you need to know. Circus Of Rock provides old fashioned, in your face rock’n'roll entertainment, spiked with loud guitars and metallised riffs.

And with bravura vocal performances from, among others, Danny (Tyketto) Vaughn, Pasi (Thunderstone) Rantanen and Rick (Masterplan) Altzi, there’s ample here to satisfy the appetites of even the most ravenous of hard rock and melodic metal fans.

Big hitters Johny (Hardline) Gioeli and Marco (Nightwish/Tarot) Hietela create a big, bold benchmark with ‘Desperate Cry’ and ‘Ghost Town’. Gioeli’s track evolves rapidly into a powerful, stomping, riff heavy sensory assault, topped off with a towering edifice of a chorus. His gravelly vocals just about anchor it to solid ground.

And as with everything Hietela touches, there’s a constant pulse to the material … a musical heartbeat that speeds and slows as the surging, symphonic metal arrangement rises and falls. His voice acts as conductor, allowing for a much more graphic musical style.

Having set the standard, everything thereafter provides full on sonic engagement. Yes, it falters a little on the album’s second half, some uneveness is inevitable with 14 different vocalists, but the first half is almost incomparable.

Picks are ‘Never’, an out and out heart on its sleeve rock song, tuned into the melodies, harmonies and simple sentiments of 80′s AOR, sung by the master, Kimmo (Leverage) Blom. Producer Rantanen then creates a suitably dramatic musical backdrop for Elize (Amaranthe) Ryde to create her own brand of vocal sympatico. She promptly obliges with an epic “sounds-like-a-Bond-theme” ‘Times Of Despair’.

As dreams go, this one turned out pretty good. ****

Album review: THE DAWN BROTHERS – Dusk

Website [Release date 16.07.21]

Welcome, one and all, to the official baptism of a new creed, the revitalization of a long-loved and well-trodden genre – Rotterdam’s The Dawn Brothers excellent new release, DUSK, hereby puts a firm stake in the ground and proclaims the arrival of Dutch-icana. In exactly the same way as the Stones and the British Invasion re-introduced America to its very own blues legacy an incredible 70 years ago, these guys continue to re-package and re-imagine Americana to great effect with more than a little infusion of the Dutch-Delta.

As is now standard for the Brothers, sophistication and simplicity go hand in hand in the song-writing on this album of feel-good compositions which lyrically touch on the innocence of by-gone times, the yearning for lost love and the unending promise of a drive on the freeway. But it’s the tune-smithery which sets the Dawn Brothers apart from the crowd. These songs are all crafted in the time-honoured style of The Band, CSNY, the Springfield and the Byrds – so much so that the iconic Laurel Canyon sound, epitomised recently on Jakob Dylan’s homage to the era (“Echo in the Canyon”), is channelled directly through the veins of these Rotterdam rockers…..and then some.

I’m always reluctant to write up a “sounds-like” review – The Dawn Brothers stand pretty much alone, or certainly head and shoulders above the crowded space – but for the uninitiated, the vocals range from the calming caress of Roy Orbison to Bas’s unmistakable Dylan-sneer backed by harmonies reminiscent of The Eagles or the Willbury’s.

From the opening track, “Junk”, the listener is immediately picked-up and immersed in a dreamy, creamy soundscape and a jaunty, summer-breeze chorus – perfect for a top-down day in the sun to get the junk out of your trunk. Maybe a reflection of the band’s decision to re-locate to the French countryside to make this album.

“Toss and Turning” takes on more of a Petty-ish edge and is as catchy as, dare I say it, the Delta variant. “In My Dreams” is a slow-ish burn but reveals itself as a sun-kissed California late afternoon….maybe towards dusk….a track which has the band gelling beautifully as ridiculously accomplished musicians. Those parties in the Canyon, many moons ago, would have seen the Buffalos and the Byrds joined round the fire by the Brothers Dawn and who knows what might have happened after that ?

My personal favourite and album stand-out track, “Corners of My Mind”, kicks off with a lovely Appalachian lilt and chugs along into a mid-tempo, riding-the-trails beauty. That Dylan-sneer abounds through a gripping middle eight and strong chorus – and then that geetar solo – yee haw and slap my thighs. Levon and The Band would have loved the competition from these relative whippersnappers.

Another favourite, “Tomorrow Never Came”, blends traditional “talent show and rodeo” story-telling with another very strong, single-worthy three minutes of poptastic Dutchicana. “Hold On To Your Love” and “So Long” close the album with proof that the Brothers can apparently pluck a damn good tune out of mid-air, the latter being a gorgeous keys-soaked lament. And then, of course, the obligatory driving song, “Vista Cruiser” – Knopfler licks meets Squeeze vocals over an ‘80s XTC bassline – super clever.

As we sadly lose more and more of the original professors of Americana as they get to “that age”, their legacy is safe in the hands of the Dawn Brothers and their merry-band of close-knit Dutchicana cohorts (Next of Kin, De Wolff on their non-heavy days, Mitch Rivers, Tim Knoll, etc – the list is unbelievably long). Wake up Americana-lovers….the torch is burning bright in Holland and will do so for generations at least as The Dawn Brothers take us back to their garden in retro-21 style – all the hallmarks of true and trusted retro song-writing but ingrained with 2021 vigour, energy and sensitivity. Certainly their most accomplished record to date. *****

EP review: COUNCIL – It Runs In The Blood

Facebook [Release date 17.09.21]

Council is made up of the 3 brothers Reeves (Andy, Doug and Pat) who traded in a life of farming to pursue their true dream: writing and performing music. Last year’s EP was highly impressive and still features on my playlists nearly a year later.

Expectations were high then for these four new songs and happy to report that Council have done it again. The electronica on the title track is top notch and little wonder it has already been used by CBS Sports and Fox sports. That is a good song, however, ‘I See Sparks’ is simply superb – like Imagine Dragons around their ‘Evolve’ album. The band’s harmonies and electronica backing make this pretty special.

‘Faded Purple White Trash’ is a tad more indie rock, with its fast vocal coupled with a big beat, it is another fine song. Not a million miles away from the sort of music Steven Wilson produced on his latest album. ‘Still We Rise’ starts of slowly and leads into another glorious piece of vocal led music. This one is highly recommended for a headphones listen to fully experience the vocals and soundscape.

Council have only gone and done it again! Four songs, all have their own lasting appeal and really looking forward to where their musical muse takes them next. ****1/2

Album review: THE KORGIS – Kartoon World

Pete Feenstra chatted to James Warren about the album Kartoon World for Get Ready to ROCK! Radio.  First broadcast 1 August 2021.

THE KORGIS – Kartoon World

https://thekorgis.com/ [Release date 16.07.21]

‘Kartoon World’ is the first proper studio album since 1992. And it marks a quantum leap forward in terms of the band’s musical and lyrical scope.

It’s a significant release, in as much as it was recorded remotely and re-states the qualities of an enduring song-driven pop outfit, while extending its reach into the realms of a concept album.

This is organic hand made music ,forged by years of experience and technical know-how, but sparked by renewed creativity and an idealistic thread that spans the 3 decades of their career.

Overlooking the slight irony of an 80’s band delivering their latest opus in archetypal 70’s concept format, they warm to their task with 12 songs that are as coherent as a film storyboard, save for a few quirky Stackridge style eccentricities.

The new creative surge stems from the catalytic collaboration between founder member James Warren and Welsh based Australian multi-instrumentalist/singer-songwriter Al Steele, who has been in Warren’s orbit since the 90’s.

And it’s Steele’s sense of drive, enthusiasm and effortless abilities that appear to have sparked Warren’s own creative fuse.

The album title and lyrical inspiration also comes from Steele’s daughter, an illustrator whose series of cartoons provided the unlikely catalyst for some of the songs.

There’s also the lyrical and vocal input of John Baker – a Korgi since the late 80’s - who notably contributes a lovely lead vocal on the title track.

The band also benefits from the remotely recorded creativity of Chris Hopkins and a one off ballad called ‘Broken’, co-written by Warren and Darren Parry, which features an enveloping Jeff Lynne style melodic chorus.

In sum, ‘Kartoon World’ is a career high for a band that started out as a studio bound duo in search of pop hits. This album successfully aims higher with a sense of adventure and greater lyrical depth.

It’s built on heartfelt conceptual themes and is glued together by a layered production. The unique Korgi aesthetic extends right through to the thematic art work and of course Warren’s enduring fascination with the Fab 4.

The Beatles influence arguably goes back to Stackridge’s 1974 album ‘Man With the Bowler Hat’ (produced by George Martin), while a late 90’s song ‘Something About The Beatles’ reaffirmed the Beatles influence on both band’s.

It’s a pivotal song in Warren’s career and here he continues to explore a unity of purpose that taps into the 60’s ideal of the healing power of love to overcome social divisions.

So while The Beatles sang ‘All You Need Is Love’ The Korgis beguile us with ‘Bringing Back The Spirit Of Love.’

Al Steele, with tongue firmly in cheek, tells us it’s about: “The Growing movement of love and the world has chosen us to be that conduit to funnel that love back to the people in one movement.”

So while the band continues to dip into 60’s musical antecedents,  ‘Kartoon World’ is very much a 70’s style concept album with significant 80’s style pop trappings and what we now call electronica.

Everything is finally refracted in a post-Beatles meets Oasis 90’s prism, with John Lennon remains the musical and political focal point. Warren’s phrasing eerily captures Lennon in his pomp, while his ‘can do’ sensibility  and ‘power to the people’ politics gives the album’s ‘love’ theme a potential bigger  impact.

‘All Roads Lead To Rome’ is a good example of the Lennon fixation. It starts in a slow bluesy vein, but subtly reveals itself as influenced by Lennon’s ‘Like Starting Over’, via a ‘Walls and Bridges’ era production, complete with a George Harrison slide guitar line.

More specifically the band helpfully comments that: “It is like John Lennon sings gospel, produced by Phil Spector, and George has dropped in to lay down some slide guitar!”

The combination of Lennon’s style phrasing and Fab 4 style harmonies make for quintessential Korgi music. It’s the work of Warren’s enduring glorious pop sensibility and 60’s musical values which he’s continually channelled back and forth between Stackridge and The Korgis and has now updated and reinvigorated with Al Steele by his side.

At times there’s a thin dividing line between nostalgia and a contrasting forward-looking imperative which the central concept of love demands.

So when the band unveils ‘Bringing Back The Spirit Of Love’ (beautifully reprised by a string section deep into the album), they put their concept on the line as a broad based repost to contemporary social divisions.

Al Steele’s orchestrated ‘Kartoon World Overture’ sets a high standard for the album as a whole, as the memorable motif levers us into a coherent musical journey like all great albums used to.

The title track is pure pop, with a Byrds Rickenbacker sound and poignant lyrics that could be Squeeze.

Steele is a man of many talents, not least his inherent rhythmic ability which is self evident on the funky and percussive electro-pop of ‘Magic Money Tree’. The latter is anchored by drummer Paul Smith’s light percussive touch and also features Chris Hopkins spacey bridge with ethereal 10CC style harmonies.

There’s also a sense of chronology as evidenced by the snappy keyboard and synth driven ‘Back In The 80’s, one of several highlights. The song benefits from glistening bv’s and an uplifting stop-time hook, to which John Baker cleverly fits his humorous lyrics.

They explore the same 80’s era on the string-led and didgeridoo intro of the wryly observed ‘This Is The Life’. It opens as another electro piece that could easily be Rupert Hine’s solo work and features Al Steele’s vocals on the verses, Warren’s vocals on the hook and an unexpected animated rap from special guest Peter Karrie (from Phantom Of The Opera):  “Staring at our mobile phones, buy it now on your credit card” etc.

Suddenly the 80’s are juxtaposed by an updated barbed political satire called ‘Time (Song For Dom’), which calls out Dominic Cummings and Boris Johnson over a harpsichord-driven waltz style piece.

The sumptuous glorious harmonies could be 10cc’s take on The Beatles, before a sudden Keith Emerson ELP style Hammond break in a brief ’80’s flashback.

They rock out on ‘La La Land’ which sounds almost like a shoe-in:  “La la land, la la land,  it’s another perfect day and there’s nothing planned, maybe rock and roll for you, but it’s not so rock and roll for me.”

It’s a social commentary on LA in particular and the States in general, as we’re suddenly transported Korgis style into a Turtles meets The Beach Boys vocal block and a resolving sax break.

‘Space’ interestingly offers two different perspectives on things from the outside looking in, while ‘This Is A New Low’ initially evokes Supertramp then heads for Pink Floyd on a big production.

‘The Ghost Of You’ has an archetypal 80’s electro intro, before a funky bass line gives it a lovely dance-floor friendly groove which is almost compromised by a cheesy Asia style synth riff.

‘Kartoon World’ flows like a river in purposeful pursuit of the sea. The undeniable swagger and ebullience is tempered by the veracity of its lyrical themes and Warren’s clarity of diction.

They round off the album with a full blown anthem that defines everything that has gone before.

‘The Best Thing You Can Do Is To Love Someone’, features special guests Seye Adelekan (bass player with The Gorillaz) and French jazz artist Laura Prince.

It’s one step away from being too sugary and could easily have come the  ‘Live Aid’ era, but you would have to be a cold fish not to be caught up in it’s emotional slipstream.

‘Kartoon World’ stands proudly by its optimistic themes and lingering melodies. We may indeed live in a ‘Kartoon World’, but this album is a monument to the enduring power of love and music, Korgis style.  ****½

Book review: Decades – THE SWEET in the 1970s by Darren Johnson

The Sweet in the 1970s Decades

Sonicbond Publishing [Publication date 20.07.21; 24.09.21 US only]

Reviewing a book by a fellow GRTR! writer, ooh tricky one but luckily Darren Johnson has written a short, concise, informative and entertaining book on 70s glam rock icons the Sweet.

Sweet were a massive success in the early to mid-70s with a strong of hit singles, many written by the Chinn and Chapman songwriting team and the band always had their own, usually much harder rocking, songs on the B-sides.

Darren has certainly looked wider into the band and how they fitted into the 70s music scene (including low – Sweet – and high glam – Bowie). His album and single appraisals are fair and it certainly comes across in his writing the love of the Sweet’s music he had back in their heyday and still has to this day.

By the mid-70s the band were leaving RCA for Polydor and although UK & European sales were declining, in the US they were on the up and up. Sadly though fate got in the way with vocalist Brian Connolly’s drinking issues hitting the band, leading to cancelling a planned US tour supporting Aerosmith.

The band’s first album for Polydor was ‘Level Headed’, which is certainly a change in musical direction for the band, less hard rock and more progressive/AOR as the author discusses in the text.

Connolly died in 1997 fronting his own version of the band, whilst Steve Priest and Andy Scott toured their own versions of the band. Scott is last man standing after Priest passed away last year, and he still tours and records with the Sweet.

Reading this book you see that Sweet could have been much bigger, especially in the US, as their influence on bands like Def Leppard, Motley Crue and The Darkness is clear to see. Indeed, there were abortive attempts at a reunion in the 80s which were again hit by Connolloy’s health issues. If they had managed to reunite they could have rode on the success of 80s glam metal I am sure.

An excellent overview of The Sweet, appraising the band’s 70s output and tracking the band’s ups and downs during that decade. Well researched and referenced too, with the final part of the book giving a whistle stop tour of what the band did from 1980 to the present day.  ****

Album review: THE ROLLING STONES – A Bigger Bang live on Copacabana Beach

THE ROLLING STONES - A Bigger Bang live on Copacabana Beach

Mercury Studios [Release date 09.07.21]

Originally released on DVD in 2007, this Rolling Stones release has been remixed, re-mastered, re-edited and re-released. At the time The Stones were touring in support of their recent “A Bigger Bang” album and this 2006 show on Rio’s Copacabana Beach was one of the largest free concerts ever staged and had an estimated audience of 1.5 million people.  Just let that sink in for a minute, 1.5 million people!!!!

Four tracks that did not feature on the original concert film are included and so we now find “Tumbling Dice”, “Oh No, Not You Again”, “This Place Is Empty”, and “Sympathy For The Devil” alongside other fan favourites such as “Jumping Jack Flash”, “Wild Horses”, “Miss You”, “Brown Sugar” and “Honky Tonk Woman”.

As a huge fan of the band I am pleased to also see “Get Off My Cloud” making an appearance in the set list, as this set is a fine balance of nostalgia and recent material with a stage show that keeps the band ahead of any others that would dare to attempt to steal their crown. The show itself is everything that you would expect from The Stones and that combined with the spectacular setting makes this a show the likes of which we are not likely to see again,

“A Bigger Bang live on Copacabana Beach” is available in a number of formats including DVD, Blu-ray, DVD+2CD, Blu-ray+2CD, 2DVD+2CD Deluxe, 2 Blu-ray+2CD Deluxe and vinyl. The deluxe editions also include The Stones November 2005 Salt Lake City show.

No matter whether you have seen this concert film in its original format or not, this new version is well worth a watch. Go on, treat yourself. ****

EP review: BASTETTE – Exposed

BASTETTE - Exposed

RPM Records [Release date 17.09.21]

‘Exposed’ is the debut EP from Blackburn based Bastette, who have already had benefited from recent exposure as one of the artists on the New Wave of Classic Rock compilation. Bastette are vocalist/songwriter Caroline Kenyon, lead guitarist Sam Newiss, rhythm guitarist Eoin Kelly, bassist Paddy Duffy and drummer Rob Hirst.

The EP was recorded at the Lounge Recording Studio in Wigan with producer Gareth Nuttall (Frank Turner) and like many artists has been somewhat delayed by the current pandemic.

The electronic pulsed ‘Stand Back’ has already been released as a single last year and is the first chance on this five song EP to marvel at the vocal power of Caroline Kenyon. Hints of Lizzy Hale and Pink! Plus her own style, which is very melodic and easy on the ear.

‘Poison’ is an absolute belter of a tune, from the hypnotic guitar riffs through to the massive chorus, this song could and should trouble the upper end of the singles charts. ‘Rollercoaster’ is another radio friendly tune and there lies Bastette’s key to potential success, they have enough grit ‘n’ guitar for the average rock fan and a melodic, modern edge perfect to appeal to anyone who loves a good tune.

Hopefully Bastette can get on the road to play these songs live as we have here a band with plenty of potential and crossover appeal outside of the rock audience. ****

Review by Jason Ritchie

Karen Clayton adds…

If you haven’t already come across Bastette, firstly where have you been and secondly, get in there quick and check them out as Classic Rock Magazine (Rollercoaster was track of the week, beating Halestorm no less) and Kerrang are taking notice and seizing on their success at HRH in August and an epic set at Rockin the Bowl festival in September, it won’t be long before this band will be headlining rather than supporting.

So who are they? Bastette, hail from Blackburn, were formed in early 2019 and is the brain child of singer/songwriter Caroline, accompanied by her full time band. The term Bastette comes from a Ferocious Egyptian goddess in the form of a Lioness – what a lioness Caroline Eve Kenyon is!

They of course made it onto to the top 10:charting album NWOCR vol 1 with “Talk About It” and frankly, we do need to talk about it – take notice rock fans, this lady is one sassy, confident performer that delivers quality track after quality track and her band are simply put absolute class.

Bastette has recently supported Massive Wagons in Liverpool and other socially distanced shows to an appreciative audience (see gig reviews) and they will be supporting Marisa & the Moths in November & December- don’t miss out.

Bastette Exposed EP Tracks:

1) Sick and Twisted released as a single in July and check out the video Bastette – Sick & Twisted (Official Video) that will give you an intro to Caroline’s rich velvety mesmerising vocals and her performance style

“I can’t resist it, you realise that you missed it, so sick and twisted”

2) Talk about it as showcased on NWOCR vol 1 – what a track to introduce the band to a wider audience

3) Stand Back – originally released as a single in 2020; sets out the Lioness position

“I don’t want to start a war, but darling you’re making it harder”

“Just say nothing at all, let it all build up”

4) Poison “I don’t give a damn what you say about me” I think we are going to talking about Bastette a lot in the months / years to come and only in a positive light.

5) Rollercoaster – this track is about living for the highs and thriving in the lows. A high can’t be a high unless we know and accept there will be some low or tough times, right? Couldn’t agree more and I suspect Bastette are very much in their ascendancy.

I’d recommend you check out the back catalogue too, there’s some gems there such as ‘Hunter’. I am very much looking forward to seeing what comes next; I will see you on tour, Bastette. ****

Album review: GEEZER BUTLER – Manipulations of the Mind – The Complete Collection/The Very Best of Geezer Butler

Album review: GEEZER BUTLER – Manipulations of the Mind – The Complete Collection

BMG [Release date: 30.07.21]

Widely respected as the bassist that invented the heavyweight bottom-end of the metal genre, and rightly held in esteem for being the main lyricist of Black Sabbath, Geezer Butler’s solo material has been packaged into a four-CD box set comprising ‘Plastic Planet’ (1995), ‘Black Science’ (1997), and ‘Ohmwork’ (2005) together with a bonus disc of alternative takes and unreleased material. The albums are a mixed bag, but on the whole stand up well as a representation of Butler’s solo, semi-experimental metal output.

Plastic Planet was released under the moniker G/Z/R with Burton C Bell from Fear Factory on vocals, and Geezer’s nephew Peter Howse from former thrashers Crazy Angel on guitar. Deen Castronovo on drums completed the line-up. No surprise then that this was a ferocious album, representing a departure from the Sabbath sound at the time (whom Butler had recently left), veering towards groove-based and chunky Ministry, Machine Head and NIN influences. I’m no real fan of the death-growl vocals which punctuate some of Bell’s delivery, but for lovers of the style it’s easy to see why Fear Factory went on to such success.

Butler wrote the lyrics for all three albums. His choice of material on Plastic Planet was plenty dark enough. ‘The Invisible’, dealt with the issue of homelessness in graphic detail; and the steam-hammer ‘Drive Boy, Shooting’ addressed gun culture and gang crime in the U.S. Elsewhere, for instance on ‘Catatonic Eclipse’, ‘X13’ and ‘Sci-Clone’, he channels technological, sci-fi and dystopian subjects. But for me it’s the quality, the grind and fuzzy atmosphere of the guitars that endures. The intensity burns through, all of 25-plus years later.

Black Science was released in 1997 under the Geezer name. Howse and Castronovo teamed up with Butler again, but the relentless rise of Fear Factory’s meant that Bell was unavailable. Previously unknown Clark Brown stepped into his boots. Butler was back in England by this time and was surrounded by his giant collection of TV sci-fi memorabilia, which helps explain the inspiration for titles on the album as ‘Mysterons’, ‘Among the Cybermen’, and ‘Department S’.

The album again largely ploughed an industrial and power theme, but featured a cleaner, less doomy sound. The album was well received by fans and the material has fared well, representing a stronger set of tracks overall, with a shade more depth and variety than ‘Plastic Planet’; and, whisper it, even a hint of melody here and there. The level of ferocity was a notch down from the first offering, but introduced a more accessible mood, conjuring up a bit of Faith No More. Stand out moments are ‘Man In A Suitcase’, the spooky ‘Mysterons’, the quirky, synth-undercut ‘Justified’ and the lumbering, down-tuned ‘Xodiak’. This would be my pick of the three albums.

Ohmwork appeared in 2005, once Butler found a gap in his Sabbath itinerary after rejoining the band in 1997. Released as GZR, Castronovo was replaced by Chad E Smith on the drum stool (not the Red Hot Chili Peppers sticksman) but Howse and Brown lined up again to record an album occupying more contemporary Nu-Metal territory including heavy, powerful cuts like ‘Aural Sects’ and the edgy ‘Prisoner 103’. The best tracks for my money are ‘I Believe’, with its hints of psychedelic metal and ‘Alone’ which finds a rewarding doom-filled mournful groove.

The bonus disc completes the collection with unreleased demos, studio outtakes, single edits. There are three live tracks culled from Michigan on an abbreviated tour cut short when Geezer was taken seriously ill and wound up in hospital. An interesting inclusion is the synth-driven ‘Beach Skeleton’ which could easily be an EMF/Jesus Jones outtake. It was recorded in the ‘Black Science’ sessions without making the album’s final roster.

Also available in this retrospective is a standalone single CD, ‘The Very Best Of Geezer Butler’, the track listing for which the iconic bassman has cherry-picked himself. These 17 tracks represent a good cross-section of the three albums with no obvious omissions.

Butler’s solo output is ripe for reappraisal and though not everything here is essential listening, there is enough of interest to warrant packages that plug a gap in the CD market (though there were vinyl re-releases last year). The committed will be interested in the neatly put-together box set, bonus CD and booklet of pics. For the curious, the ‘Best of’ CD is a fine place to start. ****

Album review: SPEKTRA – Overload

Frontiers [Release date 06.08.21]

Still mining Brazil’s rich seam of hard rock heroes, Frontiers latest South American hopefuls are Spektra, a melodic rock band built around the talents of the vocalist/ guitarist with no name, BJ.

And like his countryman, Alirio, BJ has paid his dues, with his own band Tempestt, as a longtime member of Jeff Scott Soto’s band and more recently with a reformed Talisman. Indeed, Soto (along with inhouse man, Alessandro Del Vecchio) has produced Overload. And considering that the studio band comprises influential drummer, Edu Cominato, rising star Leo Mancini on guitar and renowned Brazilian producer/bassman, Henrique Canale, we expect big things.

What we get is something of a mixed bag.

Several tracks are clearly emblematic of an era in which Foreigner, Winger, Boston and others helped shape the face of popular music culture. “Sounds like” isn’t good enough of course. Your songwriting has to be sharp, self contained. It has to display some sign of artistic ambition.

Retreads generally run out of road pretty quickly. Big, chest thumping ballad ‘Since I Found You’ and ‘Running Out Of Time’ are no more original than their titles suggest, despite BJ’s gut busting vocals and Mancini’s nicely pitched, atmospheric axework.

Del Vecchio’s fingerprints are all over ‘Forsaken’ and ‘Behind Closed Doors’. Overly familiar keyboard motifs and riffs strip all sense of freshness from the songs. You’d be hard pushed to pick these out in an identity parade.

All that said, the band are as tight as the proverbial drum. They transfer the urgent, declamatory nature of arena rock into present day pastiche very successfully on ‘Our Love’, ‘Just Because’, and ‘Breakaway’. These are deceptively simple songs that build fast and climax in a cascade of melody. Shows you just what they are capable of.

Clearly a band who can go on to better things. Sharper songwriting and a willingness to deviate from the beaten path might be all they need.***

Album review: ALIRIO – All Things Must Pass

ALIRIO - All Things Must Pass

Frontiers [Release date 06.08.21]

Alirio (Netto) is big in Brazil.

Arguably, he’s paid his dues several times over, appearing on stage in several rock musicals through the years to considerable acclaim, as well as being the frontman for Khalice, Age Of Artemis and Shaman, three metal bands performing in the Prog and Power arenas.

South America has become an increasingly fertile stomping ground for Frontiers Music, with Raphael (Icon of Sin) Mendes and Inez Vera (Inner Stream) Ortiz releasing albums recently. The results have been mixed.

In this case, Alirio and his band bridge over several artificial boundaries. Glassy guitars and discreetly programmed percussion mix satisfyingly with bass heavy rhythms in Adriano Dega’s semi contemporary rock production, carefully arranged with one foot in the past and one foot in the present. And if you listen on really good headphones/ earphones or speakers, it sounds magnificent.

It’s an interesting construction in many ways. Such tracks as ‘Back To My Roots’, which sounds like Alice Cooper performing a song modelled on the theatrical stomp of Queen’s ‘We Will Rock You’, and the syrupy, Backstreet Boys/Westlife kitchen sink ballad, (no key change sadly), ‘Here I Am’, are almost tangential departures from the matter in hand.

‘All Things Must Pass’, the track, ‘Back To The Light’ and ‘I’m Still Here’ indicate a more complex compositional direction, but nothing’s overdone. Even the more ambitious tracks – the whirling, wheeling ‘Edinburgh’, lightly steeped in celtic tradition, and ‘The First Time’, which brings a bit of Hollywood musical dazzle to procedings – are clearly well within Alirio’s reach.

The duet with Arnel (Journey) Pineda, ‘Grey’, is a bit special, and not because of Pineda, who graciously remains in the shadows. But because Alirio takes hold of this sweeping ballad and very effectively delivers a study in subtly subdued performance.

More please ****

Album review: LONG SHADOWS DAWN – Isle Of Wrath

Frontiers [Release date 06.08.21]

Long Shadows Dawn is a new collaboration between vocalist extraordinaire Doogie White and guitarist Emil Norberg from power metal band Persuader. The guys have taken their musical cues from the classic rock of the late 70’s and early 80’s and brought them right up to date with great song writing and production.

The fast paced ‘Deal With The Devil’ opens the album and it’s easy to hear the influences from Doogie’s past stints with both Michael Schenker and Rainbow. This is great melodic rock with big melodies, big harmonies and big vocals. ‘Raging Silence’ follows with a great chorus and excellent guitar work from Norberg who proves throughout the album that he is great player.

‘On The Wings Of The Angels’ gallops along at a cracking pace underpinned with a great rhythm section who are unfortunately nameless on the accompanying blurb. A complex riff opens ‘Star Riders’ which again harks back to Rainbow classics, unsurprising as Norburg cites Ritchie Blackmore as a major influence on his playing. ‘Hell Hath No Fury’ slows the pace and allows Doogie to showcase his rich, sonorous voice.

Things then head into Deep Purple territory with ‘Master Of Illusion’ which is built on a great riff and a driving beat. Norburg’s playing on this track is one of the album highlights, the man knows his way around a fretboard! The Purple influence continues on ‘Hallelujah Brother’ which has a shuffling blues rock vibe that will set your toes tapping and head nodding.

‘Steeltown’ maintains the pace before Emil breaks out the acoustic guitar for a ballad of huge proportions. ‘Never Wrote A Love Song’ is a classic rock ballad of the finest form, heartfelt vocals, a big chorus and a cracking guitar solo are all present and correct. Think Scorpions ‘Still Loving You’ and you are on the right lines, top stuff.

The guys then break out the Hammond organ to provide the riff for ‘Where Will You Run To?’ which is another classic rocker and that just leaves ‘We Don’t Shoot Our Wounded’ to round things off with another great riff from Emil

If you liked Doogie’s work with both Rainbow and Schenker then rest assured, you will love this album. Hopefully the guys will take the project on the road at some point because these songs would be great to hear live, classic rock at it’s very best!  ****

Album review: DEE SNIDER – Leave A Scar

Napalm Records [Release date 30.07.21]

Dee is back and he sounds angry, be afraid, very afraid! This album follows on from Dee’s last album ‘For The Love Of Metal’ released in 2018 and is once again produced by Jamey Jasta of Hatebreed fame. After the demise of Twisted Sister you would have forgiven Dee if he had disappeared off to live a quiet life, but that has never been his style and on this album he is back larger than life and ready to take on all comers!

The aptly titled ‘I Gotta Rock (Again)’ literally explodes from the speakers with Dee spitting out the lyrics with venom and leaving you in no doubt he still means business. ‘All Or Nothing‘ follows which could be Dee’s theme tune, if you have ever seen him commanding a stage you will know exactly what I mean.

This is a heavy album, don’t expect to find a chart bothering rock hit lurking amongst the tracks, this is pure metal from start to finish with Jasta’s hardcore influence shining through on several of the tracks. ‘Down But Never Out’ is a good example of this with huge riffs and a bombastic rhythm section accompanied by a NYHC choir supplying the gruff backing vocals.

The guys slow things down a tad with the menacing ‘Before I Go’ which has a soaring chorus and proves that Dee’s vocal delivery is a good as ever. ‘Open Season’ is a straightforward metal track with some excellent guitar work from Charlie Bellmore and Nick Petrino whilst ‘Silent Battles’ deals with mental struggles which is more relevant now than ever.

Of the other tracks the stand outs are the brutal ‘Time To Choose’, complete with George ‘Corpsegrinder’ Fisher from Cannibal Corpse on backing vocals, the fast and furious ‘The Reckoning’ which sounds like Anthrax at their best and ‘The Stand‘ which is the big ballad of the piece and closes what is a great album.

Dee may be collecting his pension now, but he is more than happy to grow old disgracefully and has released one of the heaviest albums of his career. He may have a few scars which run deep after so many years in the music business, but this album goes to prove that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and Dee’s just gotta rock!  ****

Album review: TROY REDFERN – …The Fire Cosmic!

Troy Redfern - The Fire Cosmic

RED7 Records  [Release date 06.08.21]

‘…The Fire Cosmic!’ is the album Troy has always wanted to make. It’s big, it’s loud, it’s proud, it rocks hard and he achieves his goal of making a big impact. His imperious power trio is framed by a huge production with an additional lacquer courtesy of being mastered at Abbey Road.

To fully understand the conceptual album title,  it’s helpful to identify the forces at work behind an artist whose licks, array of tones, gutsy phrasing and even his use of song titles are part of an astrological force field, as evidenced by the passion and power to be found in the opening ‘Scorpio’.

He’s born to tap into primordial energies that are the origin of every universal concept. He’s a musical conduit for creative force manipulation, as he lets everything flow through his music and explode on to a huge audio canvas that is set to echo round the universe.

Alice Bailey’s 1967 ‘A Treatise On Cosmic Fire’ further explains that: “The one life manifests through all forms within the universe as fiery energy; and the three main streams of cosmic energy.”

And so to Troy Redfern, who reverses the concept for his album title ‘…The Fire Cosmic!’, on which he appears to broach the various fires: ” electric, spirit, solar, mind, friction” and always the “internal fire.”

You could of course dismiss the above as mere semantics, but from the ripping opener ‘Scorpio’ to the anthemic finish of ‘Stone’ he takes us on an musical journey on which he straddles all aspects of his emotional, musical and cosmic spectrum, in which his musical consciousness is the same perfect meeting of spirit and matter that John McLaughlin used to allude to.

How else can you explain the explosion of the guitar as an extension of the self on an album that bears its soul without a safety net?

Flanked by his core power trio of drummer Darby Todd and Dave Marks – the latter doubles on bass and keys – he explores his own psychological being with a musical arc that stretches from down-home antecedents to a mix of grunge, metal and hard rock with a bluesy undertow, and even a hint of gospel.

So cometh the hour, cometh the man.  Redfern steps up to the plate in the idyllic Rockfield studio environment in Monmouth. He taps into the ghosts of the past that inspire him to fill his canvas to the brim with explosive licks, enveloping drones, booming choruses, angst ridden lyrics and a comic book superhero art work.

It’s a massive sounding album on which 80% of the material sounds as if was recorded in the red, and only occasionally pauses for breath to prise out a fleeting melody in 10 songs that populate a bombastic album with a rootsy heart

There are no half measures here. From the moment he lights the fuse with some brief fazed, faux psychedelia and opening surf rock riffling of ‘Scorpio’ he forges a post-Zeppelin into grunge template. He tops that with razor edged vocals and a booming chorus that drips with intensity and rattle neighbourhood with sheer sonic density.

Everything about this album is big, from the unrelenting drums to the resonant guitar tones. It’s all framed by an epic wall of sound that cushions Redfern’s flinty style in a heavy Phil Spector style veneer.

It all serves to give his songs real presence and the best choruses a memorable indent. And when he rocks hard, he’s safe in the knowledge that he has the right power trio and production team to make his dreams come true.

If there’s downside, it’s simply that he teeters on the brink of a powerhouse overload. Even Led Zeppelin knew when to ditch the big artillery. Weirdly enough this is more evident on one of the more restrained tracks such as the filmic ‘Ghosts’ which arguably could have done with lighter brush strokes to illuminate both his intricate Dobro playing and the lyrical imagery.

No matter, the song is melodic triumph, being  one of the most accessible tracks on the album and certainly with the best narrative.

Redfern has long occupied that grey area between being an acoustic blues guitarist with a sense of musical history, and the polar opposite of revelling in the shredders paradise, where his scorching fretwork matches all comers.

‘…The Fire Cosmic!’ is a melange of booming riffs, pounding rhythms, and incendiary guitar bursts that are an extension of his own intensity.

If there is a weakness it’s that the lyrics mirror the same crash and burn feel as his fiery riffling.  ‘Lay That Love Down’ for example, uses some recycled clichés and can never escape Darby’s relentless heavy pounding on a song that labours until a piecing slide break.

It’s one of the few occasional when the album has to work that bit harder to reset its course and maintain the otherwise inherent flow.

No such problem though on the opening ‘Scorpio’ which gets the album off to a booming start.

‘Waiting For Your Love’ blows away any remaining cobwebs with a huge riff driven boogie, while his husky vocal rasp is well suited to his raging heart theme. It’s a track on which you can feel the band pushing every last air molecule round the studio on a barn burner of a track.

Darby Todd is in his element and Dave Marks locks into the groove with a growling rumble, as Troy adds a trebly slide. Hard hitting rock and rocking blues doesn’t come any better than this.

Both ‘One Way Ticket’ and ‘On Fire’ are a little more predictable. The former is a burning slide-led piece on which Troy explores another angst ridden theme: “I’ve got this burning fever in my head, it’s weighing down on my heart like a ton of lead.”

It smoulders with intent and finally resolves itself on the kind of catchy hook beloved by big hair bands.

‘On Fire’ plays to the shredding strengths of special guest Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal, on a big drone-into-shred piece that sounds a touch dated, but it rocks like a kicking mule.

In sharp contact, ‘Love & War’ is  a more considered tubular sounding groove, which in spite of Troy’s aggressive vocal attack finds space to breathe with a pulsing bass and stream of consciousness style vocals: “Baptized in your darkest lie you left me crawling on the floor.”

He builds a palpable tension which he resolves with a coruscating solo, offset by Paul Winstanley’s wall of sound which gives the track real presence.

He finally strips things down to the bone on ‘Saving Grace’, on which the weepy slide and harmony vocals bring some welcome contrast.

By the time of ‘Sanctify’, he’s in danger of re-stating his earlier bluster right down to the familiar pounding riff, while the notion of ‘sanctifying my soul’, is surely something he was trying to do on previous efforts.

It’s a hard rocking track, though his piecing slide is almost lost in the muddiest mix on the album which gives it a claustrophobic feeling and almost stifles Redfern’s natural exuberance.

He saves some of his best for last on the beautifully crafted Dobro solo intro of ‘Stone’, which suggest a meditative calm after the storm.

Yet how wrong can you be? It initially benefits from double tracked vocals, before rising again with as a choral filled, guitar drenched anthemic finale.  It flows into a final solo that is subtly mixed into in an enveloping chorus.

It’s the perfect end to an impressive album that will satisfy rock and guitar fans alike. Sure there’s a whiff of retro grunge, hair metal and shred influences but Troy Redfern has paid his dues and he’s now coming to collect.

He should be amply rewarded. ****½

Album review: VARIOUS ARTISTS – Separate Paths Together (An Anthology Of British Male Singer/Songwriters 1965-75, 3 CD set)

Grapefruit [Release date 30.07.21]

Hard to see how an anthology could get any more specific. And interesting that it’s a companion piece to 2017′s female version. Well, interesting that the female version came first.

In those ten years that spanned the change from sixties to seventies – the “post Dylan, pre Punk era” – it’s also hard to imagine a time of more disparate, sometimes polar opposite sounds in popular music. Slap in the middle, 1970 is the year that : Black Sabbath released its debut; Charles Manson recorded a long player to help fund his defence, and The Beatles released their final album, Let It Be.

In a parallel pop music universe, flying above and below the public’s radar, a whole bunch of singer/ songwriter artists were making their mark, some more indelibly than others.

Enduring talents like Richard Thompson, Gerry Rafferty, Al Stewart, John Martyn, Ralph McTell, Gilbert O’Sullivan, Donovan are all here. And a special mention to those stars who flared briefly but brightly – there’s a song here from Clifford T Ward, a one hit wonder on John Peel’s Dandelion Records. And Peter Skellern, one of the first UK artists to incorporate brass bands into his romantic, piano based pieces is also here – his Top Twenty hit ‘Hold On To Love’ is on Disc One.

The original Nirvana are the acclaimed English duo/band who are credited with the invention of pre-ELO pop orchestration. Their baroque poprock material may have come to your attention recently via a flurry of vinyl reissues. One half of the duo, Patrick Campbell Lyons released the (now remastered) album ‘Me And My Friend’ in 1968. The pivotal track on disc 2, ‘Jesus Christ Junior’ is lifted from that.

And so this anthology cruises along, always in good spirits, with an almost inexhaustible supply of songs … prolific nearly man and ‘pre Camel’ (kind of) singer/songriter, Phillip Goodhand Tait’s ‘Reach Out For Each Other’ is almost buried among lesser known names on disc 3, as is Peter Sarstedt’s ‘One More Frozen Orange Juice’, the lesser charting follow up to his mammoth European hit, ‘Where Do You Go To My Lovely’.

All that said, perhaps the real gem is Graham Gouldman’s ‘For Your Love’. The song that began it all for the Yardbirds, where Clapton, Page and Beck all got their start. In rock’n'roll terms, you can’t get much more significant than that.  ****1/2

Album review: AMANDA LEHMANN – Innocence And Illusion

AMANDA LEHMANN - Innocence And Illusion

www.amandalehmann.co.uk [Release date 20.08.21]

It must be nice to have such close supporters as Steve Hackett and, via his connections, Nick Magnus, Rob Townsend and Roger King.  All heavyweights who will assure the sonic qualities of any enterprise.  But it remains whether Amanda Lehmann (Hackett’s sister in law) can break out of their collective shadows.

Best known for providing sterling harmony guitar and vocal support to Hackett in his own band, his own fans will welcome the release and – sigh of relief – it can be enjoyed in its own right and without any pre-conceived shackles.

As you’d expect it’s a beautifully crafted and produced work.  It gives Lehmann a real  chance to shine.  And. yes, at times it evokes Hackett with the rich orchestrations and vocal harmonies.

The opener ‘Who Are The Heroes’ is a good enough summation, with Lehmann’s vocals that get more appealing as time goes on and functional guitar that never grates.  The album promise is continued with ‘Tinkerbell’ and its classical grandeur while ‘Only When It Rains’ changes the vibe completely with brother-in-law contributing acoustic guitar and harmonica to what is essentially a slice of swing.

Normal service is resumed with the darker ‘The Watcher’, an album highlight which has a well-worn blues riff at its core but is elevated by Amanda’s vocal performance.

‘Memory Lane’, ‘Forever Days’ (which has elements of both Hackett and Marillion), and ‘We Are One’ maintain the consistency.  The latter even steals a little bit of Pink Floyd’s ‘High Hopes’.

Lehmann is not afraid to explore different moods on this debut solo album and, with or without her illustrious cohorts, I am sure she would have produced something of note. Solid songwriting, solid playing.  Out of the shadows.  ****
