Album review: DAVID CROSBY – For Free

DAVID CROSBY - For Free

BMG [Release date 23.07.21]

David Crosby has been prolific as a recording artist, despite various health issues, and he is back with his fifth solo album since 2014. Joining Crosby on the record are Michael McDonald, Donald Fagen, Sarah Jarosz and his son James Raymond, who also served as the album’s producer. Joan Baez painted the cover artwork.

The single ‘River Rise’ has the musical fingerprints of Michael McDonald all over it, hardly surprising as he co-wrote it with Raymond and added his distinctive vocals to this piece of West Coast musical sunshine.

The jazzier side of Crosby comes out on ‘Rodriguez For A Night’, written by Donald Fagen (Steely Dan are Crosby’s favourite band). ‘Shot At Me’ just goes to show that Crosby has lost none of his vocal power. Songs like this are pretty timeless and wonderful to hear again and again.

The title track, a cover of Joni Mitchell’s song, is a wonderful piece of music and a great version of the song. The song also features a few of the musicians who had joined Crosby on 2017’s ‘Sky Trails’, including saxophonist Steve Tavaglione and drummer Steve DiStanislao. Sarah Jarosz duets with Crosby on this one adding a little bit of extra magic to the song.

‘I Won’t Stay For Long’ is written by his son James Raymond and contains the album’s vocal tour de force. Crosby really packs some emotion into his performance on this one, helped by the sparse musical arrangement of just piano, trumpet and gentle percussion.

David Crosby still has his wonderfully harmonic vocal, which is instantly identifiable and a definition of the classic West Coast sound. A wonderful listen from start to finish. ****

DUST CODA – Mojo Skyline

THE DUST CODA Mojo Skyline (Earache Records)

You can hear influences of Led Zeppelin amongst others, with Drake’s vocals reminiscent of Plant in his heyday on ‘I Have Been Waiting’ (magnificent heavy bassline and thumping riffs) and ‘Rolling’ – the Dust Coda have certainly earned their place in the new wave of classic rock hall of fame – long may it continue, these are exciting times for new rock music!  *****

Trucker Diablo - Tail End Of A Hurricane

TRUCKER DIABLO Tail End Of A Hurricane (indie)

Trucker Diablo have used their lockdown time well and have produced an album that is uplifting and hard rocking in equal measure. The band’s previous albums have shown that their love of harmony and melody coupled with huge riffs is a winning formula and here they have captured the spirit that has prevailed over the past year into 13 tracks.

‘The Big Truck Keeps On Rolling’ should be a metaphor for the resilience of society in the face of the pandemic and this juggernaut shows no signs of stopping!  *****

THE JOHN WILLIAMS SYNDICATE Out Of The Darkness (Wulfrun Records)

‘Out Of Darkness’ counterbalances poppy familiarity with stylistic diversity.  Everything is consistently shot through with glistening harmonies, poppy hooks and the primacy of the song.

It’s one of those albums that finds you muttering to yourself:  I’m not really into pop-rock, but I like this very much. ****

IAN McNABB - Utopian

IAN McNABB Utopian (indie)

Double albums often see artists come unstuck with either a lack of decent songs to fill four sides/two discs, or indulging too much at melody’s expense. No need to worry on ‘Utopian’ as Ian McNabb shows no sign of dropping his high quality control on his songs. Fans will love this and if you have yet to enjoy the musical world of Mr McNabb here is a perfect opportunity to do so.

An album of the year with ease. ****1/2

TIMO TOLKKI’S AVALON The Enigma Birth (Frontiers)

A handful of tracks lift the album into the world of Tolkki’s grandiose, pomp peppered metal. ‘Truth’, ‘Another Day’, ‘Beauty And War’ are theatrical pieces, punctuated by rushing, thick cut riffs, speeding, dancing keyboards and a pounding percussive beat.

Tolkki once again shows his command of orchestral and chorale arrangements … rhythms sway, strings swoop, and harmonies soar. One minute, the music is delicate and restrained, the next it’s blazing with passionate vocals, most notably from Jake E and Marina LaTorraca.  ****1/2

Album review: RIAN – Twenty Three

RIAN - Twenty Three

Frontiers [Release date 16.07.21]

Here’s a genuine contender. Rian, a Swedish melodic rock band formed by singer/writer, Richard Andermyer. On their second album now, and first for Frontiers.  It’s produced by the hugely talented musician, Daniel Flores. He gives the band’s music a three dimensional depth and plenty of oomph.

The songs are formulaic only in the sense that most verses accelerate gradually toward a climactic punchline. Yes, you can hear echoes of Work Of Art, Gotthard and other bands from the blood pumping opening of ‘Stop’. And yes, you can hear US AOR influences breaking through from time to time. But the effect is not so much musical impersonation, but rather something more immersive.

You could define it perhaps as a lifelong lived-in experience, turned into 21st century songwriting. So, naturally from time to time you hear stuff that seems to have been suspended in aspic since the eighties.

‘In The Dark’ and ‘Where Do We Run’, full of classy, clamouring melodic rock, illuminated by sunbursts of keyboards and guitar (thanks to Tobias Jakobsson’s finely measured mix of the elegant and the robust), put the band on the same level as Champions League outfits like Brother Firetribe and Eclipse.

And looking across the Atlantic, ‘For Your Heart’ and ‘Body And Soul’ give you the sense that they have been carefully, lovingly constructed from pieces left on the cutting room floor by Harem Scarem and Blue Tears.

So there’s something instantly familiar and yet remarkably fresh about Rian’s material, and there’s a sonic warmth to the many songs – like ‘You Belong’ and ‘Your Beauty’ – that arrive unencumbered by a need to sound relevant, relying solely on supple melodies, taut guitars and meaty rhythms.

This band will go far. ****1/2

Film review: SPARKS: Annette / Cannes Festival Opening – The Vox, Montignac-Lascaux, SW France 6 July 2021

Sparks - Annette

It’s early evening in heart of Montignac-Lascaux, a small sleepy South West French town. And I’ve just discovered that the once thriving (pre-covid) art house cinema – which used to double as an outdoor gig – is showing a world premier of the new Sparks film called ‘Annette’.

Having done a double take and stepped inside, I find they are also beaming the opening to the 74th Cannes Film Festival on the big screen and so I think twice about leaving.

But having being suckered in by the lure of the red carpet, I stick with it long enough to silently shout out to the screen: “ooh look there’s the Mael Brothers, and wow Spike Lee.”

But enough is enough. I wander outside only to be confronted by 4 trestle tables full of assorted red and white wines and boundless nosh.

So I think to myself, so this is what happens at world premier film launches!

I’d venture 80% of the crowd who follow me outside to the drinks table are women. I’m not sure what this says about either the cinema’s regular patrons in general, or Sparks fans in particular.

No matter, there is wine to be quaffed and food to be digested, and once the fuzzy glow kicks in, a film to be watched.

And as the movie opens with the Mael brothers launching themselves into the first of two on screen cameos with a catchy ditty called “So May We Start,” things look promising.

However, a problem slowly unfolds. An incredibly dense interwoven rock-opera style narrative in operetta form comes to dominate a B movie style noir film.

The script is based round the clever idea of a high profile, mutually destructive couple.  He is an alt. stand-up comic and she an opera singer on a one way collision course.

They have a daughter, who is the ‘Annette’ of the film title, initially portrayed as living doll, before belatedly metamorphosing into a young child.

The film teeters on the brink of a slow descent, except the dark narrative is counterweighted by fast moving songs with machine gun style hooks, which give the long 140 minute movie a welcome shot in the arm.

Truth be told, when it comes to film making, the Mael brothers obviously know their limitations, as evidenced by the smart move to team up with the enfant terrible of French cinema Leos Carax.

The fact that he is as left field as them makes for something of a lopsided movie. The imbalance is rescued by Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard who despite not being pro singers fill the screen with a mix of passionate and surprisingly rich timbres.

And unfettered passion is what lies at the heart of Sparks music. There’s always been a startling contrast between the static figure of the keyboard playing elder brother Ron, who arranges the music, and the younger effervescent Russell, who sings and pens the evocative lyrics.

And if the film feels a bit cumbersome, Russell enjoys a lyrical triumph on songs such as the heartfelt and almost creepy “We Love Each Other So Much” and the portentous ‘I’m An Accompanist’, sung in character by Simon Helberg.

Then there’s the comedic ‘She’s Out Of This World’, the raucous call and response of  ‘You Used To Laugh’ – delivered by Driver in a Nick Cave style baritone – and the contrasting elegance of ‘Stepping Back In Time’.

The closing ‘Sympathy For The Abyss’ is a feverish, but poignant duet between Driver and child actor Devyn McDowell. It features the kind of string arrangement that gives the film a suitably emotive denouement.

I’ve never been a fan of musicals, let alone rock opera, but the Spark’s soundtrack undoubtedly carries the movie. It ebbs and flows to coherently frame the narrative, even if the contrast between the more bubbly songs and rather pedestrian story line sometimes feel incongruous.

Apparently the whole project was originally conceived as an album and you can never quite escape that feeling, especially given the film’s length.

Still, as always, Sparks have created challenging and thoughtful art, while director Leos Carax amplifies the kind of surreal moments that tonight extended from the film to real life.   ****

Album review: RESURRECTION KINGS – Skygazer

Frontiers [Release date 16.07.21]

The Resurrection Kings are less of a supergroup, and more a ragtag collection of talented musicians who struck gold at the box office a few times, but most often found their place in supporting roles.

Craig Goldy, Chas West, Vinny Appice and Sean McNabb are names that most rock and metal fans will know, but will find difficult to nail down.

Even the title of this, their second album, feels like the reworked wording of another band’s song.

Their 2016 debut was panned by the music press, and on this follow up, Frontiers have teamed up the band with its ubiquitous inhouse writer/producer, Alessandro Del Vecchio. This is not necessarily good news.

Leaden footed openers, ‘Skygazer’ and ‘Worlds On Fire’ begin to confirm our worst fears – a band plodding through their own hard rock afterlife, dragging their fading reputations behind them.

Then ‘Tears’ raises its head. Despite the riff and the tune’s familiarity, and some dodgy tuning, West dredges up a fresh vocal perspective, giving the song some vim and vigour. It might not be classic rock as we know it, but it puts the band onto a firmer footing.

And yes, ‘Fight Against Our Pride’ and ‘Is This The End’ are formulaic, but they submerge themselves wholeheartedly in the thudding machinery of metal, distracting us from the obvious moves.

‘Angry Demons’ might just be the album standout. It dives deep into 70/80′s rock/metal. It’s theatrical, wordy and pumped up, aiming at the mini epic style favoured by John Sykes’ Blue Murder.

And you could argue that ‘Saviour Of Our Souls’ and ‘Don’t Blame Our Love’ are counterfeit copies of the band’s Rainbow, Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple etc past. But the music still smokes and smoulders satisfyingly… even when you’re joining the dots, you can still make a decent picture. ***

Quick plays: MURRAY McLAUCHLAN, SEAN CHAMBERS, MARK GERMINO

MURRAY McLAUCHLAN Hourglass True North Records [Release date 09.07.21]

Folk and country artist Murray McLauchlin has been recording and touring since the early 70’s. In his native Canada he is an eleven-time Juno award winning artist, received the Order of Canada, has been inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame and is soon to be inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.

McLauchlan began with a deeply personal series of poems and then married them to rootsy guitar licks and riffs, to create one of his most political and personal albums. Despite the gentle music on the album, songs like ‘The One Percent’ and ‘America’ really hit hard lyrically. ‘Pandemic Blues’ is a song of hope, despite the song’s title!

Throughout the album the sublime pedal steel playing by Burke Carroll is key ingredient to the album’s sound and success.

Folk meets country with pleasing results on this fine album from Murray McLauchlan. ***1/2

SEAN CHAMBERS That’s What I’m Talkin’ About Quatro Valley Records [Release date 09.7.21]

Blues/rock guitarist, vocalist, and bandleader Sean Chambers pays tribute to his friend and mentor Hubert Sumlin (Howlin’ Wolf’s lead guitarist) on his new album.

The album contains ten songs Chambers regularly performed during his more than four years backing up Sumlin in the late 90s and one Chambers original.

There are some serious blues guitar workouts dotted throughout the album, none more so than ‘Goin’ Down Slow’. Then there is the superlative Hammond playing of both Bruce Katz and John Ginty throughout the album. Their respective playing underpins the guitar playing of Chambers nicely. Vocally Chambers has that classic mournful blues sound, which he really shows off to good effect on ‘Sittin On Top of the World’.

A fitting tribute to Hubert Sumlin, with plenty on here to satisfy fans of traditional blues. ***

Review by Jason Ritchie

MARK GERMINO Midnight Carnival Red Parlor Records [Release date 06.08.21]

Mark Germino has released several major label albums being signed to RCA and Zoo Entertainment (BMG) and his songs have been recorded by Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Emmylou Harris, Vince Gill and Kenny Chesney amongst others.

Germino is joined on this album by bassist Tom Comet, drummer Rick Lonow (Burrito Brothers), guitarist Kenny Vaughan and Michael Webb on accordion, piano, mandolin & organ. Poco’s Rusty Young guest on pedal steel on ‘Carolina In The Morning’.

This album has been a long time coming as his previous album was released back in 2006. Musically it is a good mix of Americana, folk and country, with songs like ‘Peace Train’ (loving the solo switch from accordion to guitar on this one) and ‘Ettress Rolls On’ recalling the Hooters, especially given the prominence of the accordion in the mix.

His background as a poet can be heard on ‘The Greatest Song Ever Written’. Possibly not, but still a damn fine tune!

It may have taken awhile to get to this point for Mark Germino to release his latest album but it has been worth it. Fourteen songs, plenty of variety from foot tappers through to melancholy ballads and wonderful playing from all those involved. ***1/2

Album review: HEAVY WATER – Red Brick City

Silver Lining Music [Release date 23.07.21]

With, amongst others, the sons of both Iron Maiden’s Steve Harris and Bruce Dickinson’s sons kicking up serious dust in The Raven Age and As Lions respectively, it’s no surprise that Seb Byford stepped up to the plate to follow in his father’s footsteps, Saxon’s Biff passing the talent down.

As well as being a member of Naked Six, Byford Jr has linked up with his rock veteran father in this new project and their debut album is a thrilling bringing together of the generations. With the Seb on guitar and vocals and Biff on bass and vocals, Heavy Water boasts some impressive firepower and those searching for their new rock fix would do well to sit up and take a listen.

Despite Biff saying that there are certainly a few metal tracks on the album, ‘Red Brick City’ leans much more towards the heavy end of the Stereophonics, rather than the full flooded, heads down approach of Saxon.

The album certainly has a lot of character and its take on very modern hard rocking blues offers some real grit but what shines most of all is the song writing. Each of the ten tracks that make up the release are packed full of melody, great hooks and some real soul, highlighting the collaboration as one that is certainly the best of all worlds.

‘Solitude’ opens the album with some weight, attitude soaked and with a Rage Against The Machine swing, it blends big guitars, the Kelly Jones-like timbre of Sebs voice along with Biff’s distinctive tones and adds a second layer groove that wouldn’t be out of place on an Extreme or Dan Reed Network album.

The titular ‘Red Brick City’ is another tour de force, punching hard and heavy, a big and ballsy canyon deep blast, the vocals full of passion and power as giant Led Zep riffs peel off into the sky.

As well as the more subtly bombastic tracks, there’s also room for some slower, more reflective numbers and ‘Tree In The Window’ is a prime example of this.

Big in sound but also beautifully unstated, the song is unlike anything we’ve heard Byford Snr perform in a very long time, rolling gently along but with a very human heart at its centre.

Elsewhere, ‘Revolution’ kicks things up a notch again, throwing in shades of The Beatles at their most feral and ‘Follow This Moment’ features a brilliant saxophone solo by Dave Kemp, who also provides keys, on the outro.

Along with Kemp, drummer Tom Witts provides the beats of what is set to prove a potent combo and we can only hope that Heavy Water get out on the road if busy diaries permit.

The album closes with the modern rock blues with swing of ‘Revolution, a tasty Hammond solo adding another splash of colour and the job is done. A highly impressive debut and one that’ll will bear repeat listenings. Heavy Water have well and truly arrived with a splash. ****1/2

Album review: DIM GRAY – Flown

DIM GRAY - Flown

Grim Day Records [Release date 25.06.21]

One band that came to mind when listening to Dim Gray’s debut album is Celtus.  And the Norwegian “post prog” art rockers may well appeal to those who warmed to that now defunct band’s stirring melodies and melancholia.

As with Celtus, Dim Gray’s offering has folk music at its roots but expanding into more rockier territory with songs like ‘The Wave We Thought We’d Ride Together’,  ‘Closer’ and – one of the standouts – ‘Black Sun’.  Another band that draws comparison is Public Symphony (especially the bonus track ‘Paper Bird’) although grounded more in electronica.

The trio have been compared to Fleet Foxes and Sigur Ros and their own musical background has encompassed black metal and film music.  There is certainly a widescreen element at play here plus the use of strings adds to the haunting atmosphere that pervades this album, not least on a piece like ‘Ouroboros’.

‘Flown’ was originally released in digital only format in 2020 and in physical form now has four bonus tracks including live versions of  ‘Again’ and ‘Song For E’.

Given that the themes expressed in the album are of loss, longing and loneliness, Flown emerges as a true soundtrack to our times.  It is both stirring and reflective in equal measure and will also appeal to those who like – to quote our reviewer Alan Jones – “the melancholic, uplifting and atmospheric tunesmithery “of Katatonia.  ****

LAURENNE/LOUHIMO – The Reckoning

Frontiers [release date 09.07.21]

Laurenne/Louhimo’s The Reckoning is an interesting new release from Frontiers. A musical “lockdown made me do it” marriage of Smackbound’s Netta Laurenne and Battle Beast’s Noora Louhimo.

They’ve written a dozen or so Symphonic Rock songs with Netta’s husband, Nino (Thunderstone supremo/ guitarist/ songwriter), who’s also produced. He’s a musician who emphasises rhythm and propulsion in his music. And that’s the perfect setting for Netta and Noora’s lacerating lyrics.

Much of the material moves away from the kind of auditory spectacle you expect from the genre, and moves closer to a more thematic sense of rock . . . many of the tracks here are fierce expressions of feminism. ‘Tongue Of Dirt’ is harder, grittier than the surrounding material. “That’s how sweet revenge is to me” wails Laurenne as her scorched vocals breathe fire on the man (or perhaps woman) who did her wrong. She further ramps up the rhetoric with ‘Bitch Fire’s scalding hot lyrics, “life belongs to those who burn with pain”. Phew… best check yourself for bruises when these two are over.

L/L go on to surround the hardcore narrative of these key songs with aurally adhesive hooks and vertiginous choruses. Some have slick veneer of grandeur, (Striking Like Thunder, Vipers Kiss), and many aspire to symphonic metal/stadium rock greatness, (The Reckoning, Time To Kill The Night). But one in particular stands out because it cuts hard against the grain of the material on either side.

You could accuse ‘Hurricane Love’ of being an Alicia Keys or a Norah Jones pocket piano concerto, but you could never accuse it of being symphonic metal. Lyrical, lush and sentimental, it’s an absolute peach that should be released to radio. Success in the straight world beckons. ****

Book review: Decades – URIAH HEEP in the 1970s by Steve Pilkington

Decades- Uriah Heep in the 1970s by Steve Pilkington

Sonicbond Publishing (Release Date 28.03.21)

Following the series of  ‘On Track’ releases, reviewing a band’s back catalogue in comprehensive detail, Sonicbond have been moving onto a new ‘decades’ concept in which a band’s history is examined in more detail over a ten year period.

As a band that celebrated their 50th anniversary last year Uriah Heep are prime candidates for such a treatment, and the most logical decade to choose is their first one, in which they enjoyed the most success, and established what we think of as the trademark Heep sound- David Byron’s extravagant vocals, high harmonies and the combination of Hammond organ and wah-wah guitar.

1980 is also a good stepping off point as it marked the departure of Ken Hensley who as principal songwriter was the biggest single impact on that sound, allied to his keyboard (and occasional guitar and lead vocal) work.

The narrative is more rounded than the ‘On Track’ series, as it covers line up changes, of which there was a dizzying array of bassists and drummers, and touring activity. It presents a familiar music world narrative of a relatively short rise to fame, enjoying the trappings of success, drink, drugs and internecine strife, and a longer period of commercial decline, searching for a musical identity and key personnel leaving. The biggest single impression that emerges is the exhausting pressure placed on them to stay on this treadmill as evidenced by the fact that between 1970 and 1978 they released a remarkable 12 studio albums.

At the same time detail is preserved with every song on every album still analysed, articulately yet in a non-technical way for us non-musicians.  It does become a little repetitive with narrative about chart performance in various European countries, which might have been better extracted in a statistical table.

While most of the sources are secondary, Steve Pilkington makes good use of interviews with original bassist Paul Newton, who also provides the foreword, and Ken Hensley, prior to his sad passing last year.

Pilkington, who has authored several in this series, has a neat turn of phrase and while clearly a fan (of Byron in particular), this is best deployed when analysing the less impressive songs or ignominious moments in the band’s history. With the right blend of knowledge and enthusiasm and strong but fair-minded opinions, he comes over as the ideal companion to spend an evening chewing the musical fat over a few pints.

As a bonus a substantial concluding chapter ensures the reader is not left on tenterhooks, dealing thoroughly albeit in less detail with the chequered history of the band in subsequent decades, in which Mick Box has been the only constant.

The chronological narrative does not lend this book to the casual observer wanting a quick overview of what makes Heep such a fine band and the secret of their longevity. But for a committed fan, this is an enjoyable and comprehensive read that makes you want to listen afresh to the albums from one of the criminally underappreciated greats of British rock. ****

Book review: On track…CAMEL (Every album, every song) by Hamish Kuzminski

On track...CAMEL (Every album, every song) by Hamish Kuzminski

Sonicbond Publishing [Publication date 14.06.21]

Camel are a band that certainly deserve both a concise overview and a continuing recognition of their collective greatness, and significant contribution to the world of prog. None other than Steve Rothery supplies the foreword, reflecting his early interest in the band and the inspiration of Andy Latimer in terms of his own guitar playing.

Hamish Kuzminski does a very good job of synthesis, drawing upon online sources as well as consulting some of the band members.  He is also not shy of putting forward his own analysis where appropriate although at times he relies fairly heavily on the Curriculum Vitae DVD (2003).  He also acknowledges the input of a guitarist – Pete Byrchmore – to help his critique of Latimer’s guitar style.  A couple of playlists reinforce the author’s fanboy credentials although I’m not so sure about his proposed title for a “fusion” collection.

If Camel influenced a future Marillion guitar player, Andy Latimer told me in 2014 he was personally influenced by Dutch guitar maestro Jan Akkerman and indeed Focus were not a million miles from Camel in their melding of classical, jazz and rock motifs, using keyboards, guitar and flute.  This is perhaps one oversight in the author’s narrative, along with his  incorrect attribution of that interview to ‘Ready to Rock’ Radio.

Elsewhere this book is the usual plumbing of each studio album, allowing the reader to be directed to the highlights.  Kuzminski identifies ‘Moonmadness’ as a landmark (1976) and – in the “later” period -  the conceptual ‘Dust & Dreams’ (1991) whilst he considers the guitar solos in ‘Ice’ (Nude, 1981) and ‘Sahara’ (Rajaz,  1999) amongst the best. It’s hard to disagree.

Thankfully, Camel’s output has been closely controlled since 1990 by Latimer and partner Susan Hoover via their Camel Productions and the author evidently awaits a remastering of earlier catalogue by Steven Wilson, another muso fan of the band.  We would agree that Camel need to have possibly a final stab at new material and a new studio album.

Perhaps the most we can be thankful for is Latimer’s return to health by 2012, followed by successful UK tours in 2013 and 2014, including a re-run of ‘Snow Goose’ climaxing at Royal Albert Hall, and then a brilliant revisiting of ‘Moonmadness’ in 2018 captured on the latest DVD.

Nearly 50 years on, that Camel sound was still intact and the band – and Latimer in particular – sounded better than ever.  Credit is also due – latterly – to keyboard player/vocalist (and multi-instrumentalist) Peter Jones who handles the Camel catalogue with incredible feel and empathy.

The book contrasts with many of the under-par offerings in this series in packing a lot of relevant history in its sub-150 pages whilst remaining very readable and well illustrated with the usual colour section this time supplemented with relevant images throughout the text.

There is a useful  survey of live albums although this would have been better with a full track listing in each case whilst the 2010 Universal/Decca anthology (and indeed any compilation) is strangely absent in the listings.  This is often a good entrée for the unconverted.

There is a brief list of solo albums from the respective band members, with Andy Latimer conspicuous by his absence.  A list of session appearances would also have been useful, as there is an earlier reference to Latimer’s contribution to Kayak’s album ‘Seventeen’ (2018) and he also played on David Minasian’s album in 2010.

For the moment this ‘On Track…’ dissection allows us to either confirm our own long-held views or – for the unfamiliar – reaffirm the band’s significance and need for urgent investigation.   ****

Album review: STONE THE CROWS, MAGGIE BELL (reissues)

STONE THE CROWS - Ontinuous Performance

Repertoire [Release date 25.06.21]

Noted blues rock band Stone The Crows  formed in Glasgow 1969 after Alex Harvey introduced his younger guitarist Leslie Harvey to singer Maggie Bell. Bell already had a notable career and her voice, big bluesy and soulful, is often compared to Janis Joplin.

Although the material has been previously issued, it has been out of print for a while and German label Repertoire always do a fine job with packaging.

The first two albums, both released in 1970, feature Maggie Bell, Les Harvey, bassist Jimmer Dewar, drummer Colin Allen and keyboard player John McGinnis. With a solid blues backbone, the music mixes rock and soul, and although at times a little disjointed it is excellent and the band definitely made a mark.  The keyboards and guitar interplay well and some tracks feature a vocal interplay between Bell and Dewar. Harvey’s guitar ranges from lounge blues on some tracks to very fiery.

The standout track on Stone The Crows is the 17 minute I Saw America (taking up the whole of side 2 of the original LP). There’s some real classic and solid blues that has a live feel, and a range of moods too, a musical journey which makes the album worthwhile getting on its own.

Ode To John Law kicks off with Sad Mary which has a definite nod to Deep Purple. The album continues in much the same vein as the debut and is verging on essential listening.

Dewar and McGinnis then left and were replaced by bassist Steve Thompson and pianist Ronnie Leahy; the musicianship was still there for 1971’s Teenage Licks and there are some great riffs, Bell’s vocals still powerful, but the album didn’t have quite the same flow.

Then tragedy, as guitarist Les Harvey was electrocuted on stage; a guitarist who deserved to be known for so much more than this incident.

The band continued with guitarist Jimmy McCulloch (later of Wings), for 1972’s Ontinuous Performance. This was the band’s only album to chart, and it would be totally unfair to call it their weakest album, but no band could get over the loss of someone like Harvey. However, this is still a wonderful album. Although not as bluesy, there is a fine version of Penicillin Blues (a track previously recorded by Alex Harvey).

The band soon split, all the members going their separate ways. Ronnie Leahy would later play with Jack Bruce and Nazareth.

Maggie Bell (still under the management of Peter Grant) recorded two solo albums in the mid 70s, included in this reissue campaign. 1974’s Queen Of The Night takes much influence of Stone The Crows but is less bluesy; opener Caddo Queen is a little more soulful and definitely funkier.

The title track is similar and typical of the album; Maggie’s vocals are still powerful and solid here, plenty of range and feel, but the music is little more middle of the road soulful rock. The fire of the first two STC albums is definitely lacklustre. Maybe trying to hit the zeitgeist but it’s just not the same. Maybe my expectations are askew, but I’d take Maggie’s voice on any album.

The following year’s Suicide Sal is an equally fine effort and opens with a solid take on Free’s Wishing Well. Bell’s vocals at their best (this is where we got the Joplin comparison, although in my view Bell’s vocals were superior). There is a little more direction on this album and it’s definitely the better of the two. And collectors may note that Jimmy Page guests on this album.

Repertoire have packaged these albums well; the music sounds great and the gatefold card sleeves with booklet (extensive sleevenotes) make them look as good as they sound. No extras, but as a collection of 6 albums (I can’t pick a favourite, the 6 go well together as a set), I’d recommend these in any collection. ****

LESLIE WEST - 5 Originals

5 Originals (3CD) Voiceprint [Release date 21.05.21]

The late great Leslie West is, perhaps, best known as the founder, guitarist and vocalist of the legendary American rock band Mountain, also pioneers of heavy metal and blues rock. The band took their name (in the late 60s) from the title of West’s 1969 debut solo album, which itself describes the man-mountain West well.

Mountain had success from 1970 to 1975, and reformed a number of times (I saw them live at Knebworth, 1985), and had some notable successes; the tracks Mississippi Queen and Nantucket Sleighride the best known. West also recorded two studio albums and one live as West Bruce and Laing, featuring Jack Bruce.

But here we get 5 of Leslie West’s solo albums across 3 CDs, and luckily the first two discs feature two whole albums apiece (I’m always worried about carrying an album over from one CD to another with these sets, but panic over here). Mixing blues and rock, West’s solo career is often overlooked by Mountain but there is plenty to enjoy. And with 5 albums here, it’s a great value package.

The albums included here are solo albums 2-5 (1975’s The Great Fatsby, 1976’s The Leslie West Band, 1988’s Theme and 1989’s Alligator), perfectly logical, and 2005’s Guitarded. All great albums, four obvious choices and one from a while later; but I’m complaining as I’ve been after all five on CD for a long time. Guitarded also features a number of guests, including Ian Gillan. Nice.

Disc 1 oddly has albums 2 and 3 the wrong way around, but we’ll work in date order. The Great Fatsby, a play on the famous book title, is as essential listening as West’s debut, and here features a mix of originals and covers. Mick Jagger guests on rhythm guitar and co-writes High Roller, and there’s a decent cover of the Stones’ Honky Tonk Woman. I like the arrangement of House Of The Rising Sun, and other covers include Free’s Little Bit Of Love. The blues credentials are there and amongst the plethora of guests is Mountain’s drummer Corky Laing. The rest of the CD is West’s 3rd album The Leslie West Band. Another wonderful rock/blues album, and again Laing is present, and the band also features former Spooky Tooth guitarist Mick Jones, who later that year would form Foreigner. Some solid songs from the band, and excellent though it is, the previous album does overshadow it. Two decent covers, in the Beatles’ Dear Prudence and the Animals’ We Gotta Get Out Of This Place; the album’s almost a bit short (under 35 minutes) but still a very enjoyable listen.

Disc 2 and 1988’s Theme, which also featured bassist Jack Bruce. There’s a fine cover of Theme For An Imaginary Western, a Jack Bruce song covered by Mountain in 1970, and also of Hendrix’s Red House, modern bright production makes for a solid rock album, but I’m not sure about the minute or two of Presley’s Love Me Tender. 1989’s Alligator is, again, wonderful in terms of the guitar. The production is solid if a little too bright, but the mix of the rhythm section is poor and synthetic (and in places sounds programmed).

The 3rd disc is Guitarded, originally released in 2004, is a bit of a mixed bag and really only of interest to hardcore West fans. An album of covers, there are some tracks such as Theme For An Imaginary Western that West has covered previously; here the track is live from the Night Of The Guitars. Much as I love Steppenwolf’s Born To Be Wild, this is not a great version and again the rhythm section has a programmed feel. Honky Tonky Woman is true to form, nothing new here but a fine sound. The best track of the album by more than head and shoulders, is Hang Me Out To Dry, featuring Ian Gillan. This track originally appeared on Gillan’s 1991 Toolbox album.

Overall a fine collection and a decent package, nice booklet and a lot of excellent guitar work.

Nothing new but five albums on CD that are otherwise not that easy to find. ****

Got Live (4CD box) Voiceprint [Release date  21.05.21]

The man mountain and Mountain guitarist and frontman Leslie West had a long and noted solo career alongside various Mountain reformations, and spent long periods of time on tour. His brand of hard rock and blues rock was always popular, as these live shows prove.

Originally released several years ago, in individual ‘Official Bootleg’ style, this box brings together 3 shows over 4 CDs.

The first set, recorded in Brierly Hill in 1998, features a mix of solo and Mountain material, and showcases the man’s power on stage. Theme For An Imaginary Western features some heartfelt vocals, and with Third Degree/Dreams Of Milk & Honey running to over 12 minutes, there’s plenty of room for a jam or two. The far from polished sound (that authentic bootleg quality) makes some parts sound a little jumbled. Two covers in Voodoo Chile and Whole Lotta Love go down well, and excellent versions of the Mountain classics Nantucket Sleighride and Mississippi Queen make for a very enjoyable listen. The second disc (dubbed New York State Of Mind) is equally good, if equally ropey sounding in places) and although the track list is similar, the arrangements are slightly different, here Nantucket Sleighride running to over 11 minutes. Wonderful take on Whiskey Train, some great guitar work.

The 1975 show at the Electric Ladyland studios is spread over 2 CDs and will be of most interest as it was recorded as West’s post Mountain solo career was launching. House Of The Rising Sun is given a workout, and there’s a couple of versions of the West Bruce & Laing track Why Dontcha. Mississippi Queen is amongst the Mountain tracks played. Roll Over Beethoven sounds a little muddy but a lot of fun, and it is medlied with Crossroads so some excellent blues on show here, and with several alternate versions of some tracks you get a good dose of West and is solid guitar work.

Again well annotated, a good package making some rare material available again. Not for the casual listener but Mountain fans will love it. ****

Album review: THOR – Alliance

Deadline/Cleopatra [Release date 16.07.21]

Canadian bodybuilder, historian, actor, and musician John Mikl Thor has produced some very fine metal over the years, debuting in the mid 70s. Since the turn of the millennium Thor has been particularly prolific, and this new album is appropriately titled as it features a host of guests.

His Keep The Dogs Away album has always been a favourite of mine, and his later work has moved in a more power metal direction. The stage antics of ripping telephone directories, bending steel bars with his teeth and blowing up hot-water-bottles like balloons may be gone, but he still has a very solid voice and continues to rock hard.

The opening track We Need Musclerock isn’t as cheesy as it sounds and features some great riffs (and a decent guitar solo too) alongside Thor’s strong vocals. Guest here is Raven’s John Gallagher; we’re off to a good start.

Niflhel (Realm Of The Dead) is just as metal, mixing classic metal with a touch of 80s thrash, and vocals that combine high screams and deep throaty singing. Then all the stops are out on The Ultimate Alliance, featuring Chris Holmes (Wasp) and Manowar’s Ross The Boss. This track is excellent, full on head banging entertainment. Amongst the full band sonic assault is some immense riffage, a strong solo and consistently strong vocals. And like the following Ode To Oden (you have to expect the Norse Mythology), there is solid anthemic feel.

Original Anthrax vocalist Neil Turbin crops up on We Will Fight Forever which, while keeping that anthemic hint, is much more melodic. Some of the vocal sections are reminiscent of 80s FM rock. That feel continues in Because We Are Strong which shows strength in  the songwriting.

Rock Around The World, featuring Danko Jones, shows another dimension. A hint of Aerosmith and other influences I can’t immediately place. Then Queen Of The Spiders has an upbeat psychedelic feel (a hint of The Doors).

Seventeen tracks, some great material here, and other guests include members of Lords Of The Trident, Striker, Warrior Soul, Haunt, Death Dealer, The George Jonestown Massacre, Thundermaker and Prism, amongst others.

Thor still knows how to perform, on record as much as on stage, and there is lots to love on this album. Rocking, entertaining, and wonderful listening. ****

Album review: DENNIS DE YOUNG – 26 East, Volume 2

DENNIS DE YOUNG- 26 East, Volume 2

Frontiers Records (Release date 11.06.21)

This is an album I’ve been looking forward to for 12 months since the release of Volume 1. That represented the former Styx singer’s return to his melodic rock roots in far better fashion than I had dared imagine, with the promise that he was holding back enough material for a second, and final ever, album.

That means that, even more than on the first, there are nods here and there to his musical history aided by clever CD artwork by Hugh Gilmour, with front and back covers mocked up like a vintage LP with a photo and song titles, the contemporary DDY on the front and a young lad from the fifties playing a child’s keyboard on the rear.

‘Hello Goodbye’, as you might expect, is an autobiographical tale about the ‘Fab Four’s influence on his youth: to a jaunty Beatles meets Styx styled musical backing, it name checks various song titles and is complemented by a mocked up picture of he and his wife travelling in a convertible down Abbey Road.

‘Land of the Living’ is a more conventional but lively melodic rocker and one of four more co-writes with fellow Chicagoan songwriting legend Jim Peterik, with the list of players drawn from both individuals’ touring bands.

On ‘The Last Guitar Hero’ – a song which reminds me of Styx’s rockier efforts usually sung by James ‘JY’ Young- he turns his mordant wit to prevailing musical trends and the march of technology, with clever but depressing lyrics such as ‘the last guitar hero/with your big old Marshall stack/gone like a record store/and never coming back’. In one of the most unlikely combinations you will see in rock, one of the few figures who fits that description, Tom Morello, guests with an unconventional solo with his trademark squeals of feedback.

However DDY’s biggest hallmark has always been the sugary, theatrically delivered ballad and there are two, his voice as crystal clear as ever at 74  in ‘Your Saving Grace’, with gospel style backing vocals and ‘Made for Each Other’.

‘Proof of Heaven’ first appeared on Jim Peterik’s World Stage album a couple of years back with DDY as guest vocalist and has the dramatic songwriting imprint of the former all over it, combined with some wonderful harmony vocals that call to mind Styx on the chorus and Crosby Stills and Nash on the bridge.

Another that floated my boat is ‘There’s No Turning Back Time’, with a beautiful intro with acoustic guitar reminiscent of America before some power chords give way to a synth solo and the vocal hook kicks the song into a higher gear. He might not thank this scribe for another comparison to his estranged bandmates, but to my ears the structure had a ‘Crystal Ball’ vibe to it.

The album is a little more uneven than the first and not every song hits the mark quite as much- the quirky ‘St Quarantine’  and ‘Little Did We Know’ (not the only moment where early Magnum came up as a comparison) being rather more average though they contribute to the overall feel, which somehow  manages to be both unashamedly classic, yet fresh.

But after the mellow ‘Always Time’, the album ends on a high in the six minute ‘Isle of Misanthrope’, a return to the vintage Styx pomp rock sound, with sardonic lyrics with mythical and nautical metaphors, and bubbling synths parping away before a big chanted chorus, then there is an outro of a reprise of ‘Grand Finale’ from the ‘Grand illusion’, taking his career full circle.

It makes for a wonderful if uneven listen as this singular character takes a bow in his typically theatrical style, going out on a high with some fresh classics that bear so many of his hallmarks.   **** 1/2

Album review: CROWNE – Kings In The North

CROWNE – Kings In The North

Frontiers [Release date 18.06.21]

Crowne is (another) gathering of Scandinavian melodic hard rockers from various bands comprising of vocalist Alexander Strandell (Art Nation), guitar, keyboards & producer Jona Tee (H.E.A.T), bassist John Levén (Europe) and drummer Christian Lundqvist (The Poodles), with the album’s guitar solos provided by Love Magnusson (Dynazty). Strandell and Tee are Crowne’s main songwriters too.

Starting off with a nice bit of grandiose melodic hard rock in ‘Kings Of The North’, we then get a floor filler if ever there was on in ‘Perceval’. Shades of the Poodles and H.E.A.T. with a chance for Alexander Strandell to show off his undoubted vocal prowess.

The album does dip a little midway through as ‘Unbreakable’ is a tad melodic hard rock by numbers and ‘Make A Stand’ is one to skip. However, ‘Set Me Free’ is superb from its pop synth intro through to the instant chorus and keyboard solo, one of the album’s highpoints. ‘Sum Of All Fears’ is another one with a strong pop these running through it, especially in the chorus.

There is the obligatory ballad and ‘Save Me From Myself’ is suitably passionate in its delivery.

Do give this album time as it gets better on each subsequent play, although ‘Perceval’ and ‘Set Me Free’ are instant treats on the ears. I am pretty sure we will hear more from Crowne as Strandell and Tee make a good partnership and they know how to create classy melodic hard rock. ***1/2

Album review: MICK PINI AUDIO 54 – Backtrack

Pete Feenstra chatted to Mick Pini and Craig Marshall for Get Ready to ROCK! Radio.  First broadcast 29 August 2021.

Mick Pini - Backtrack

Bandcamp [Release date 01.07.21]

Mick Pini’s ‘Backtrack’ marks his 55th anniversary in the music business. It’s a career defining contemporary blues compilation album, framed by producer Craig Marshall’s loving attention to sonic detail and his cinematic vision.

There can be few contemporary blues related albums that can confidently lead us on a mellifluous journey from the Jump blues of the opening ‘Jumping Blues’, through the down-home, guitar and piano instrumental imagery of ‘Snowy Wood’, to the closing acoustic instrumental ambience of ‘Wasteland’.

Producer Craig Marshall steers the ship with real authority, digging deep for grooves and shining a light on instrumental virtuosity and polishing up the hooks.

Apart from producing, mixing and mastering the project, he’s also responsible for the 4 outstanding Audio 54 tracks which update Mick Pini’s oeuvre.

Pini is a Peter Green disciple with a subtle vibrato, touch and tone, matched by a warm vocal style. The emphasis is always on restraint, feel and the emotion of a song, though he has plenty in reserve when it comes to soloing over a big groove.

In that regards, he moves from some characteristic languid lines full of feel to shorter more intense phrasing on ‘You Know I Can’ which is closer to Freddie King. But the key to the album as a whole is the path he takes to forge his own style.

With the exception of say Snowy White, it is Pini who carries that torch for Peter Green, while this timely compilation album perfectly marries his own past with the futuristic ambient feel of Audio 54.

For those that don’t already know, Pini was belatedly discovered in the late 80’s by the legendary Mike Vernon, who signed him up for the ‘Wild Man’ Pini album,

He was always his own man, never pandering to the guitar hero school of blues, let alone wasting precious solos on anything that didn’t serve the kernel of a song.

He’s a soulful, melodic player who knows how to use subtle dynamics. He’s also versatile enough to bring telling contrast to his music to keep the listener guessing, or at least quietly smiling at his chosen direction.

He opens with the self explanatory big band workout of ‘Jumping Blues’. His warm expressive vocal sits perfectly in the front of a mix that intuitively captures the balance between Pini’s laid back blues, a vibrant piano fill and some big band bounce.

It’s the perfect start to a career defining compilation album that subtly reveals Pini’s many shades of blues.

The album flows from beginning to end making light of the time span between some of the tracks. This is wholly due to the perfect equilibrium between Craig Marshall’s svelte touch and Pini’s versatility and willingness to experiment.

He might revel in the minor key blues and readily slip into a languid feel, but he’s equally capable of surprising us with sudden stylistic twists and turns, as on the slide-led ‘Blues Is Cheap’.

The latter acts a jolt to the system, as Pini’s gutsy slide slashes are bathed in echo and reverb to give the track an edge, while the horn heavy funky feel of ‘You Know I Can’ is different again.

Mick’s attack cuts through the track with venom, taking over where his vocal leaves off. Marshall adds an unexpected organ link and some baritone sax into the mix. It all makes for an enveloping groove topped by Mick intense soloing, while only a sudden finish robs the track of a proper resolution.

No matter, Pini’s signature guitar style is married to Marshall’s sonic imprint, meaning there’s a unity and consistency of purpose at the heart of the album.

There are also no unnecessary solos, while even the simplest of lyrics are always cloaked in a suitably emotional framework. On the heartfelt ‘Got It Bad’ for example, – on which an opening vocal and guitar ‘call and response’ wracks up the emotion of a relationship song – he sings: “When I woke up this morning, I lost everything I had.” It leads to the pivotal line: “When I woke up this morning the blues was knocking at my door,” both of which are delivered with total feel and conviction making light of what in another context might be regarded as recycled cliché.

A beautiful accompanying piano line lets the track breathe, as every emotional nuance is matched by Pini’s guitar playing, before the number heads for a stinging resolution that evokes exactly what he is feeling, in another example of serving the song.

So it is then, that ‘Backtrack’ unveils Mick Pini’s full arsenal of tones and expressive phrasing over 10 tracks that span Jump blues, big band blues, Latino blues, jazz, funk and ambient excursions, full of gorgeous string bends, subtle dynamics and above all restraint.

The suitably titled ‘Blues For Peter Green’ updates his own style with a haunting opening guitar line that provides a gateway to a noir filled impressionistic piece full of tonal inflections.

Put simply, blues like this can’t be taught. Sure you can learn the notes, but Pini reaches into the beyond and taps into something with universal emotional significance.

The slow burning ‘One Glass Of Water’ mines a similar source, as his guitar playing feels like a slow tide as it gently rolls in to reach its apex and then just as gently recedes to leave its mark in the sand.

The noir filled ‘Shadows’ is a bass-led groove with a haunting piano line and Pini’s close to the mic whispered phrasing. Its a wonderful example of how at his best, the music and lyrics are inextricably linked in a deep groove, which owes so much to Marshall’s grasp of sonic imagery.

Pini completes the jigsaw either side of judicious horn stabs and crisp percussion. It’s so good that you barely notice that his guitar playing is more of a supportive role.

‘Into The Distance’, adds a Latino feel to another Peter Green style instrumental, on which Pini makes every note count with full toned relish, while the mid-tempo ‘Standing In The rain’ would have suited  Sherman Robertson, another Mike Vernon protégé.

The guitar/horn combination give the track its heft, while Mick’s emotive vocal adds a poignant feel that reflects the titular hook.

And in an exquisite moment of seamless sequencing, we’re drawn into the atmospheric book-end called ‘Slow Hands’. It’s a jazzy after hour horn arrangement with a fat toned guitar solo and drips with retro cool.

A muted trumpet provides a perfect counterpoint to the finger clicking backing track, as Pini beautifully teased out his notes. Nothing is rushed and the whole thing feels like a painter adding the final touches to a masterpiece.

And it’s that combination of song craft and real emotion generated by fingers on guitar strings that gives Mick Pini’s blues an organic feel, while Craig Marshall adds the sophisticated sonic quality.

It all adds up to something unique, which may be routed in the past, but feels fresh and contemporary enough to suggest that after 55 years of pounding his beat, Mick Pini has hit career high. ****½

Album review: THE IMMEDIATE FAMILY – S/T

THE IMMEDIATE FAMILY

Website [Release date 27.08.21]

The Immediate Family maybe a new band but their ranks are full of seasoned session players who have worked with the likes of James Taylor, Keith Richards, Jackson Browne, Toto, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, Stevie Nick and more. The Immediate Family is guitarists Danny Kortchmar and Waddy Wachtel, drummer Russ Kunkel (most of us will own at least one album he has appeared on I am sure!), bassist Leland Sklar and guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Steve Postell.

The Immediate Family has kept themselves busy during the pandemic, releasing the two EPs ‘Slippin and Slidin’ and ‘Can’t Stop Progress’, each one including newer originals along with covers including ‘Werewolves of London’ and ‘New York Minute’. As if that wasn’t enough, filmmaker Danny Tedesco is currently hard at work on The Immediate Family documentary, expected to be released in 2022.

The album storms out of the blocks with the up-tempo, blues rocking trio of ‘Can’t Stop Progress’, ‘Slippin’ and Slidin’ and ‘Everything That’s Broken’. By the time song four comes along, ‘Damage’, you’re glad of a change of tempo and a chance to catch your breath. Having three lead singers helps really make the harmonies shine on this one. If that wasn’t enough the guitar soloing is simply divine.

‘Not Made That Way’ is another wonderful number with the slide guitar underpinning the vocals. Again the backing harmonies are a highlight, shades of CSN.

Their version of the Waddy Wachtel/Warren Zevon cowrite ‘Things to Do in Denver When You’re Dead’ is top notch. Even vocally it sounds uncannily like Warren Zevon at times.

The album’s two bonus tracks are live versions of Zevon’s ‘Johnny Strikes Up the Band’ and the Danny Kortchmar/Jackson Browne collaboration ‘Somebody’s Baby’. Both are done with style and the good thing for these guys is that they not only have a pool of their own original songs to draw upon, but also many classic songs that various band members had a hand in writing and composing.

The album oozes musical class as you’d expect given the pedigree of the musicians involved. Part blues, part rock, a little bit country and a whole lot of fun. Let’s hope the Immediate Family can get on the road soon and I am already looking forward to their next musical adventures. ****

Album review: LAST OF THE MISFIT HEROES – Hope For The Hopeless

The Last Of the Misfit Heroes - Hope For The Hopeless

Self release [Release date 26.03.21]

South London trio Last Of The Misfit Heroes confidently tap into rock’s pre-corporate ability to channel anger and frustration into socially conscious and meaningful songs with enough intensity and frisson to bottle the excitement.

As the band’s name and album title suggests, this is a project shot through with an ironic perspective. So it comes as no surprise to find that they play their music with plenty of bluster and attitude as they try to make sense of a fast changing world.

The lyrics are thoughtful and hard hitting, while the music is rooted in a post-punk energy spiked by booming riffs with a metal edge, frequently offset by plenty of catchy hooks.

In guitar playing vocalist Steve Catt they have a pivotal figure who injects the songs with vitality, authority and a vocal range reminiscent of The Stranglers era Hugh Cornwall.

Everything is anchored by a sledgehammer rhythm section of Anj Jackman on bass and significant bv’s, and Chris Catt on drums.

It’s all produced by Dan Lucas who has expanded their original EP release to a full blown album by gluing everything together with in-between song audio snippets that bring a sense of forward motion.

And to that end, the opening ‘Creating A Monster’ is a powerful statement of intent, from the wild quasi Frankenstein “It’s alive” outtake, through some tub-thumping rock with a booming hook.

There’s nothing essentially new here, but there’s plenty of muscular rocking, solid song-writing, clever production edits and occasional melodic moments.

‘Misfit Misplaced’ is built on a sludgy shuffle drum track with a contrasting heavy early King Crimson riff, before settling on a metallic drone guitar sound, topped by a purposeful vocal.

Catt further fattens the track with distorted buzz tone guitar and an electronic feel, as the band works up an intense wall of sound that perfectly frames the song’s “misfit” narrator.

‘Pieces’ cleverly juxtaposes thematically doomy lyrics with contrasting  hypnotic staccato buzzing guitar riffs, with additional guitar squalls, harmonics and one of the best vocal on the album.

A preacher style voice snippet leads us into the heavy tom-tom beat and grinding metal riffs of ‘Dead Behind The Eyes’, which benefits from a straight-to- the-vein hook.

Again the band find a real sense of dynamics in a glorious collision of post-punk energy, lyrical vitriol and a U2 wall of sound, full of guitar lines modelled on The Edge.

The band may wear their 70’s and 80’ s influences on their sleeve, but they refreshingly have something original to say about contemporary life, as they move from the micro to the macro, via individual emotions to society at large.

The muddy sounding ‘Pulling Punches!’ is different again, being powered by a rumbling bass, relentless drums and a tension busting “oi” chant. The latter is not too far removed from the early Stranglers, before a stop-time hook punctuates the following intense drone of ‘Demons’.

Things get heavier on ‘When My Empire Falls’ in mix of machine gun drumming and layered guitar. They generate a portentous sound that fits the imagery of the song title well. They teeter on the edge of grandeur, which feels as if it might implode at any moment.

The end of the track creates a tension filled void which they fill with an unexpected Trump style cartoon voice, before we’re into the self explanatory ‘Bombs’, full of more heavy riffs on another song that could have been a Strangler’s outtake.

There’s a suitable change of pace on the dark ‘As The Water Runs’, which delivers an unexpected denouement with an exclamatory finish: “You’re still alive.”

They round things off in exhilarating fashion with the hard rocking single ‘Wake Up Call’, full of a feverish vocal and punchy buzz tone riffs that mirror the song’s title.

Last Of The Misfit Heroes borrow from the past to look to the future. Their music straddles decades, but they rock hard enough and the material is strong enough to forge their on direction. ***½

Album review: ONE DESIRE – One Night Only- Live in Helsinki (CD/DVD)

Frontiers Records (Release Date 11.06.21)

In normal times, it might seem vainglorious for a band to issue a live CD and DVD just two albums into their career. However, in these strange times it is easy to empathise with One Desire, one of the standard bearers of the new wave of Scandinavian melodic rock.

Last year their sophomore album ‘Midnight Empire’ was released to general critical acclaim but they were unable to capitalise on the momentum by touring- though I did see them on one of the last shows prior to the pandemic, supporting Night Flight Orchestra at Islington Assembly Hall, where as I recall their impact was dulled both by a poor sound and the fact the new material was yet to be released.

However last October, they did play an hour long gig on home soil at the On the Rocks club venue in Helsinki, to an enthusiastic, standing and utterly un-socially distanced audience, now captured for posterity, with singer Andre Linnan randomly switching between (helpfully subtitled) Finnish and English.

As with most such releases, the sound is geared towards the audio visual form, which also gives greater context than the audio-only release. However, the DVD is open to criticism technically- with the exception of drummer Ossi Sivula, the band close ups are spoiled by their being bathed in an unflattering pale blue or red light (notably keyboardist Antti Roslander) while the heads and ubiquitous camera phones of those in the front get in the way.

The set opens, as did the new album, with ‘Shadowman’ which boasts a more adventurous and progressive feel, before ‘Apologise’, one of the twin songs from their debut that attracted such attention back in 2017 and where the DVD does add value, capturing some of the atmosphere with crowd shots as they join in with the chorus.

I hadn’t previously appreciated just how good a guitarist Jimmy Westerlund was, and in playing style and poses he bears more than a passing resemblance to Neal Schon. Most impressive is the way his guitar solos carry the melody lines by themselves, best exemplified by the intro to ‘After You’re Gone’, the album’s lead-off single from the current album.

Great melodies and multiple hooks abound on the likes of ‘Heroes’ and ‘Godsent Extasy’ (sic) with less trace of the Europop influences that made the last album a little controversial for me.

A trio of ballads are placed mid-set, and the cameraman switches to an arty black and white mode for ‘When The Heartbreak Begins’, with some great harmony vocals, which is followed by a semi-acoustic duo of ‘Only When I Breathe’ and ‘Falling Apart’.

Antti’s stabbing keys provide a memorable intro to ‘Hurt’, which has to be a modern day melodic rock classic and, starved of live action, I found myself joining in with the crowd’s handclapping mid section from my sofa. The set closes with unusual fashion with the wholly untypical metal of Buried Alive, though the credits play out to the studio version of ‘Battlefield of Love’, rather confusingly left on the audio CD.

There is also a short extra on the making of four of the songs from the new album, the band once again switching between Finnish and English.

While the presentation may be flawed, this is a recommended showcase to become acquainted with of the current rising stars of the melodic rock world. ****

Book review: Babysitting A Band On The Rocks by GD Praetorius

Babysitting A Band On The Rocks by GD Praetorius

Sonic Bond Publishing [Publication date 14.05.21]

G. D. Praetorius is a life-long rock music fan who was involved in the production of almost 200 rock shows from the mid-70’s through to the mid-80s. Mostly based in and around Long Island, the artist he worked with (Praetorious seems to have been a jack of all trades in his live concert days, perhaps best surmised as a handler) Aerosmith, AC/DC, Van Halen, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull and many more.

His insights in the Aerosmith tours without Joe Perry and the demands of Steven Tyler are fascinating for fans of the band, as is his explanation of Van Halen’s infamous M&Ms rider demands (and not the reason you may think either!).

Praetorious is a rock fan first and foremost, still buying albums and seeing gigs to this day. Some of the books best moments are when he met Keith Richards, his lifelong friendship with Dee Snider and a very interesting tale involving a grand piano and renowned session guitarist Dick Wagner.

It is a very easy read, one you can dip in and out of at your leisure, and no real bitching contest that some lesser rock memoirs deteriorate into. That said, he has little time for the Yes fronted by Trevor Horn and Blue Oyster Cult seem unfairly dismissed as a band with little musical legacy.

An interesting rock memoir told from a fly on the wall perspective and a worthy addition to your classic rock bookshelf.

Album review: JOE JACKSON & TODD RUNDGREN feat. ETHEL – State Theater, New Jersey 2005 (CD/DVD)

JOE JACKSON & TODD RUNDGREN feat. ETHEL - State Theater, New Jersey 2005

Purple Pyramind [Release date 18.06.21]

Back in 2005 the pairing of Joe Jackson and Todd Rundgren may have seemed rather incongruous.  I remember thinking at the time that Rundgren had just released an excellent solo album ‘Liars’ and it would have been nice to hear more of that, whilst Jackson would simply dilute and detract from the work of his cohort.  Given also that at this point Rundgren had just one recent UK tour behind him after an absence of many years.

There was an additional twist.  The show also featured the New York-based string quartet Ethel although they only added communal strings during the encore.

The unlikely liaison came about in August 2004 following Joe Jackson’s first so-called ‘Joe’s Pub In The Park’ series (Not the Joe’s pub but promoted via the venue’s director and a friend of the string quartet) and specifically a gig in New York’s Central Park when Ethel joined the two main protagonists.

It was evident that – at the Liverpool concert I witnessed in June 2005 – the local audience were there for Todd and to that extent Jackson, admittedly with a clutch of fine songs (including ‘Steppin’ Out’ , ‘Citizen Sane’ and ‘It’s Different For Girls’), was always going to be the support act.

Ethel opened the show with a surprisingly gutsy and frenetic delivery which may have been a bit too high-brow for those with an ear for late-seventies pop and sometimes quirky classic rock.

The emphasis in Rundgren’s set was on his powerful and very soulful vocal delivery as much as his wonderful acoustic-electric guitar playing.

If that Liverpool crowd were baying for Todd these aficionados would always dispute the merits of his set list, and a catalogue very difficult to condense into an hour long set.

Amongst the surprises were ‘The Wheel’, ‘Hawking’ (as part of a piano interlude) and a Beatles tribute ‘You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away’ wholly appropriate given the venue.  The latter two (and ‘Stood Up’) aren’t included in this collection (which has cherry picked a setlist that also included ‘I Saw The Light’, ‘Beloved Infidel’ and ‘Who’s Sorry Now’) but it does show how they mixed things up each night.

Highlights included one of the ‘Liars’ standouts, a paired down ‘Afterlife’, and a superb ‘Pretending To Care’.  Both are great demonstrations of Rundgren’s way with a melody.

After the respective sets from the two main artists, all performers came together for the encore which included’While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ with Ethel taking the lead in terms of solos – and orchestration colouring Rundgren’s electric guitar chords – and vocals shared with Jackson.

We’d have to wait a few more years for the return of Rundgren with electric guitar firmly strapped on his shoulder following the release  of another fine solo album ‘Arena’.  And then, in 2011, he toured the UK with essentially the “greatest hits” set we’d all been waiting for.

But back in 2005 a continuing revival in Rundgren’s visibility – at least in the UK – was welcomed at this gig and the pairing was a great success.  And all nicely recalled on this excellent 2-CD/DVD package.  ****

Album review: VARIOUS ARTISTS – Rockets Of Love! Power Pop Gems From The 70s, 80s & 90s

VARIOUS ARTISTS – Rockets Of Love!

Big Beat / Ace [Release date 25.6.21]

Power pop collections are never going to be top sellers, so it’s encouraging to find Ace’s Big Beat imprint following up 2019’s “Come On Let’s Go” and last year’s “Girls Go Power Pop” (both of which I have reviewed previously for GRTR!) with another excellent release.

Compiler Dave Burke extends the timeframe to include the 90s this time (and even one from 2004, Josh Rouse’s lovely ‘Winter In The Hamptons’) and doesn’t restrict his selections to America alone, with UK and Australian acts also getting a look in.

The opening track, which inspires the name of the CD, is The Knack’s ‘Rocket O’ Love’ from their 1991 album “Serious Fun”. The band continued to produce some great music long after the commercial success of ‘My Sharona’, and this is a terrific example of their later output.

Candy’s ‘Whatever Happened To Fun…’ from 1985 sounds reminiscent of The Babys in their prime, and their line-up includes a pre-Guns N’ Roses Gilby Clarke. Even better is the catchy ‘I Could Be The One’ by Fire Town, a relatively obscure band which included Doug Erikson and Butch Vig who would go on to form Garbage.

‘I Need You (That Thing You Do)’ by The Wonders is from the 1996 Tom Hanks movie ‘That Thing You Do!’, but less well known than the film’s main theme song. Tommy Marolda is best known for his recordings as The Toms, but his nostalgic sounding ‘I Wanna Be A Teen Again’ was released under the Tom Foolery moniker. The cover stars of this CD, Cheap Trick, are here with an oft-overlooked cut from 1990’s “Busted”, the superb ‘Had To Make You Mine’, while ‘Vacation’ is a high octane 1980 blast by Richard X Heyman.

The UK is well represented, with Essex’s cult singer-songwriter Martin Newell’s ‘The Popular Girl’ a typically lo-fi jangling affair from a man with an extensive discography. 1980’s ‘Hearts In Her Eyes’ by The Records was actually written by the band’s Will Birch and John Wicks for The Searchers, who themselves are also here with the self-penned ‘Another Night’ from the second of their excellent Sire label albums. 1981’s ‘Better Things’ is a strong later period effort by The Kinks, while the Ace Records archives are also mined with 1978’s Chiswick label Beatles-esque single ‘Hey Baby’ by the obscure Hartlepool-based group Disguise.

As for the Australian contributions, ‘Foolish’ by DME is another epic number, while they don’t come much better than ‘Sooner Or Later’ – an Innocents song which evokes The Raspberries to fabulous effect.

One of the most fascinating inclusions is a re-imagined (through a power pop prism) version of British group Jigsaw’s 1975 hit ‘Sky High’ by The Vandalias – a killer tune! The ‘shoulda-been-a-hit’ theme continues with gems such as Tommy Tutone’s ‘867-5309 / Jenny’, Marshall Crenshaw’s mighty ‘Mary Anne’, ‘Modern Man’ by 4 Out Of Doctors, and ‘That’s What She Said’ by The Greenberry Woods. The set is completed by more magic courtesy of The Flashcubes, The Blow Pops, The Producers and Brad Jones.

As with the previous Big Beat releases, there’s a good sprinkling of well-known acts mixed with some true obscurities, and this really works. Topped off by a 24-page booklet which includes a detailed track by track annotation, along with original sleeve photos, this is another brilliant dose of power pop! ****

Album review: NITRATE – Renegade

NITRATE - Renegade

AOR Heaven [Release date 30.07.21]

Nitrate are back with album number three and it is all change in the line-up. Nick Hogg remains joined by a new vocalist, Art Nation’s Alexander Strandell, Alessandro Del Vecchio (keys, backing vocals) and lead guitarist Dario Nikzad (Hell To Pay).

The other big change is the songwriting, where Nick has hooked up with Vega’s Tom & James Martin & Mikey Wilson (Kimber) to produce an album that has been heavily influenced by Def Leppard’s ‘Hysteria’. Tom Martin also played all the rhythm guitars and James Martin added keyboards.

Opener ‘Danger Zone’ sets the tone for the album being a song that is steeped in an 80s rock sound and could easily have featured on a hit movie soundtrack back in the day. The Def Leppard sound comes through loud and clear on ‘You Think You’ve Got It’, especially on the guitar breaks and backing vocals. More Def Leppard approved fun to be had on ‘Addicted’ and ‘Lay Down Your Arms’, the latter a full on 80s power ballad treat.

Alexander Strandell gives an emotive filled vocal performance on ‘Why Can’t You Feel My Love’, recalling the excellent ‘Love Amongst The Cannibals’ album by Starship. Whilst ‘Take Me Back’ is one of those good time tunes that recall past loves. Any one of a number of songs on here that could grace daytime radio, if only in a parallel universe where rock was not restricted to specialist radio.

Nitrate keep on evolving, keeping their core melodic rock sound, however, on this album they have set the Def Leppard influence to ten. Hopefully this line-up can work together again as Strandell suits the music to a tee and there is a strong songwriting partnership by adding in the Martin brothers and Mikey Wilson. ****
