Mekong Delta – Intersections

Mekong Delta is a progressive thrash band from Germany that has been around much longer than I ever realized. I’ve only discovered them in the last 3-4 years, and am still working my way through their incredible music. Formed in 1987 by Ralph Hubert (bass) who was sound engineer for bands like Warlock and Living Death, they were born out of the desire to totally annihilate any and all competition on the scene. There have been numerous line-up changes over the years.

What struck me initially about the bands current album, Intersections (Steamhammer/SPV) was how they really didn’t sound like any other band out there, which is the goal for anyone making music. Or should be. Certainly they have a very German metal sound to them, I’m thinking in terms of bands like Rage and Accept. I love the driving intensity of a song like “Sphere Eclipse,” yet it’s very dynamic with melodic vocal melodies. Then you go into a song like “The Healer” which features shredding guitar work from Benedikt Zimniak and Eric Grösch, and powerful vocals from Martin LeMar. Then there’s almost straight forward thrash on a song like “Memories Of Tomorrow,” yet, much like Mekong Delta’s work, there’s nothing really straight forward.

Despite the fact that the band has been around so long, if you’re looking for something new in a the trash world, Mekong Delta’s new record Intersections is one I would definitely suggest metal fans to get. Then go back and check out the rest of their catalog. I’m not overly familiar with them, but I have certainly heard enough to know they’re quite a special band.
