Airs is a collaboration between lyricist/writer George Andrade and composer and multi-instrumentalist Steve Brockmann. They met on a Spock’s beard forum and keeping the Spock’s beard theme going Dave Meros and Alan Morse of the band guest on ‘Flight II’.
This is a concept album based on the story of Owen who rolls through a stop sign and causes a mother and her young daughter to veer off the road and crash, paralyzing the daughter from the waist down. Owen spends the next six years in prison and after he is released returns home where he sets out to right the wrongs he has committed.
Sun Caged’s Paul Adrian Villarreal really gets into his role as Owen and steals the show vocal wise for me. Perfect proof is the opening song ‘Fateful Days’, a song that reminded me of Kansas’s album ‘In The Spirit Of Things’. There is a lot of musical variety with some cracking prog metal songs including ‘Grounded’ and ‘Kites’. The couple of instrumental pieces fit in well, unlike some albums where the instrumental sections veer off the main musical theme. Special mention to the ballad ‘The Great Salt Pond’, which features Floor Kraaijvanger on lead vocals. This will delight fans of AOR and prog alike.
Strong and interesting story, talented vocalists, lots going on musically makes this a ‘must have’ album for prog rock fans and those who enjoy Kansas and the mighty Savatage.
