X-Y – Flying

Sliptrick Records

This is the latest album from French alt rockers X-Y who have been treading the boards since 2006. The guys are heavily influenced by Linkin Park, blending melodic hard rock with samples and bits of electronica thrown in for good measure. There is a lot to like on this disc and over the course of the 12 tracks there are some impressive tracks , heavy, melodic and well constructed.

The guys also aren’t afraid to slide into non rock quarters with a bit of French rap on ‘What We Like’ and funking things up a bit on ‘9 Lives’ which adds another layer to their sound and holds the interest further. Another band mooted as an influence are Nickelback, but I would say Black Stone Cherry are closer to the mark, especially on the more laid back closing number ‘Heaven’s Rain’.

I wondered in another review recently why France had produced so few memorable rock bands and whether there were any up and coming bands that could change things, I think X-Y may be the one.
