NEURAL/FX – Abrection
Self Release (Release Date – Out Now)
Mexican prog metal this time all the way from Monterrey. Reading the band’s biog it would appear that they went through a fair number of members before they finally got a stable line up and managed to get into the studio. The results would suggest that they all went to the studio at different times as it is hard to find a cohesive song amongst the ten on the album.
The playing is top class and there are some virtuoso performances throughout but the tracks are made up of a number of technical passages strung together rather than actual songs. It is all fast and frantic as well which does make it an uneasy listen. You could say it keeps things interesting, but I found it a bit much.
Technically brilliant then, just don’t go looking for a decent song.

GUTTERGODZ – Go For Broke
Fat Hippy Records ( Release Date – Out Now)
The north-east of Scotland is better known for its fish industry than its rock ‘n’ roll culture, although there is a big drug problem in the area so that’s a start I suppose. Guttergodz have the swagger and the songs though to bring a little bit of the Sunset Strip to Aberdeen Esplanade, the only sun you are likely to see if you pay the city a visit !
Guns ‘n’ Roses, Cinderella, Motley Crue and any other 80’s rockers you care to mention are unashamedly referenced here to good effect. The three guys are well versed in the ways of ‘cock rock’ and looking at their promo picture they also have that 3am, ‘rough as a badger’s arse’ look off pat.
The songs themselves are good classic, hard rocking numbers the best being ‘Go’ and the excellent ‘Mess Again’. If you don’t set your expectations too high then the guys don’t disappoint. There is nothing new or clever on offer, but it is a good listen none the less. One thing that does let it down a bit is the production and the final mix which sounds like it has been filtered through a duvet.
This is a good debut album and if you like your hard rock with a bit of sleaze on the side then Guttergodz are worth a try.
