Quick Plays – ROCKBURN, DEPTH, VELVET STAR, THE BRITISH IBM

ROCKBURN – Better Man

Self Release (Release Date – 17th Sept 2012)

This is the latest single by Glasgow indie rockers Rockburn, following on from their album ‘Red Dress’ released earlier in the year. There is only one track on the disc but it is cheery, bouncy, indie pop rock of a high calibre.

The band have already had a track picked up for an American TV show, plenty of radio airplay and tracks used as half time entertainment for both Liverpool FC and Celtic. The guys are working on new material at the moment and if it is of the same standard as this then there should be no own goals scored.

DEPTH – Waiting For The Waves

Self Release ( Release Date – 29th Oct 2012)

This nu-metal 4 piece have been riffing hard for the last six years and this is their latest EP for your delectation. Mixing good riffs and melodies with a twin vocal delivery they reminded me of The Blackout. There are 5 tracks here with the best being the faster paced ‘Whispers’, in fact one criticism of the band is that most of the EP is very one paced which gets a bit boring and you find your attention wandering by the third track.

A good effort, but a bit more variety required.

VELVET STAR – All Or Nothing

Self Release (Release Date – 29th Oct 2012)

Velvet Star play rock ‘n roll and appear to have gone through more band members than Spinal Tap. Guns ‘n’ Roses, The Wildhearts and Iggy Pop are all offered up as influences and you can hear elements of all on this, their latest EP. The guys sound as if they have had plenty of live experience and manage to catch a raw, live feel here with good results.

With dirty, sleazy riffs aplenty the band put in a good shift with current guitarists Mewsy and Robbie G playing up a storm. The only down side are the vocals of Danny Jones which aren’t strong enough at times to match the musical onslaught, maybe the mix has done him no favours, it’s hard to tell. A good effort though.

THE BRITISH IBM – S/T

www.thebritishibm.com (Released October 29th)

Three piece band’s debut album and as their name suggests they enjoy all things retro, specifically computer based – a previous single was released only on a 3 ½ inch floppy disc! The line-up consists of Adrian Killens (vocals/guitar), David Martin (bass/vocals) and Paul Richards (drums) plus a whole swathe of guest musicians. Musically this is pleasant enough indie pop, ‘Animal’ and the title track are the pick of the bunch, but the songs on the whole lack any real hooks or even quirky touches to get the listener coming back for another listen. Pleasant enough listen but nothing more than that I am afraid.
