WHYZDOM – Blind ?

Scarlet Records (Release date – out now)

I do like a bit of symphonic power metal and on paper Whyzdom looked to have all the right elements. This impression was further enhanced during the opening bars of ‘The Lighthouse’ which is the first track on this, the band’s second album. The playing is first rate with excellent orchestration and musical arrangements throughout, what does let things down a little is the vocal delivery from front woman Elvyne Lorient. In order to do the music justice a strong vocal delivery is required but Elvyne to my ears comes up a bit short.

However there is no faulting the music. The project was put together by guitarist and orchestrator Vynce Leff and he has done a fine job in assembling a group of musicians who can carry off the technical metal on show with apparent ease. ‘Dancing With Lucifer’ is a good example, a full on symphonic metal onslaught with time changes aplenty and crushing guitarwork. There are a couple of quieter numbers which suit Elvyne’s vocal delivery better, namely ‘ Paper Princess’ and ‘Lonely Roads’. The feature track of the album is last up in the shape of ‘ Cathedral Of The Damned’ which adds a large dollop of prog into the proceedings to great effect and at over 10 minutes it rounds the album off in grand style.

This is an impressive album with a lot to like and one that the band should be rightly proud of. The vocals did detract a bit for me but that is purely a personal view and you shouldn’t let it put you off giving this release a listen as you will find it worthwhile.
