Album review: ANDY SCOTT – The Solo Singles

Angel Air www.angelair.co.uk

Andy Scott made his name as the guitarist in the Sweet, a version of which he still tours with to this day. In the 80’s though after the Sweet called it a day in the early 80’s he started to release some solo singles. These are collated here and many had major success in Europe, Australia and South Africa.

Don’t go expecting the hard rocking side of the Sweet though, as these songs have a very 80’s feel and use a lot of synths/drum loops to give a more dance feel to the music.

If you were looking for similarities Go West or the Powerstation would be good reference points, the latter as Andy Scott’s guitar riffs feature heavily in the songs. ‘Krugerrands’ and ‘Let Her Dance’ are classy examples of electro pop rock and a tune like ‘Never Too Young’ you could imagine featuring on any number of US teen movies from the mid-80’s.

There is some Sweet tunes on here with ‘Lady Starlight’, released as a solo single as the Sweet version featured Brian Connolly. ‘Be With You Soon’ also started off as an early Sweet tune.

Sweet collectors will of course want this and any fan of 80’s electro pop rock, however if you’re thinking this will be Sweet sounding best grab a listen first!
