Album review: MAGGY SIMPSON – Lab Rat and Lobster

Voodoo Bones www.facebook.com/maggysimpsonrocks

Maggy Simpson consists of Shane Counter and Bat Kinane (of Glyder fame), who have previously worked together on Bat Kinane’s solo album. That album was a singer/songwriter one with a folk feel, whereas Maggy Simpson is more of a metal beast. In fact the music on here is possibly the heaviest Bat Kinane has recorded, most notably the opener ‘High Time To Die’ a real monster of a tune driven along nicely by the drums of Davy Ryan (ex-Glyder).

The duo wanted to have no musical barriers on this album and use some of their wide range of musical influences from Megadeth and RATM at the heavier end, through to Thin Lizzy and the Beatles. Thin Lizzy/Glyder shine through on ‘Spending Time’, a song that features some great guitar riffs and solos. ‘Last Days Of Cool’ is a spritely soft rock tune, a song made for airplay.

‘Gun Fun’ screams out of the speakers like Megadeth with its hard hitting lyric matched to a hard hitting tune. I do like ‘On Blabbermouth’, a pop at the keyboard warriors who are quite happy to slate people online and say things they would never dare say to that persons face.

The album has a wide musical mix for a debut album and that maybe the only downside for those listeners who like a n album to be one musical style all the way through. If for you – like me - variety is king, delve in and enjoy!  ****
