earMUSIC [Release date 24.02.14]
Formed in 1991, this Brazilian power metal band have won many fans, playing with progressive and melodic angles. This live set, recorded in Sao Paolo in their native Brazil, celebrates the 20th anniversary of their Angels Cry debut.
After a number of line-up changes, the continuing member guitarist Rafael Bittencourt, with long time guitarist Kiko Loureiro, are joined by a number of guests for this show, and lead vocals are provided by the operatic chords of Fabio Leone (Kamelot, Rhapsody Of Fire et al).
Mixing melodic and progressive angles nicely, the band are tight and solid throughout. Much of the debut album is played, with tracks from the Angra catalogue. “Angels Cry” opens and stands out, and “Nothing To Say” and “Waiting Silence” follow. Amongst the set are “Carry On”, “Wings Of Destination” and “No Pain For The Dead”. Leone’s vocals suit the material well, and he talks to the crowd too. Surprise inclusion is, from the debut, a cover of Kate Bush’s “Wuthering Heights”, with guests Tarja Turunen (ex Nightwish) and Uli Jon Roth (Scorpions). A concert enlightener indeed. A string quartet bolster the sound on 4 tracks too (I happen to be a big fan of anything orchestral in metal).
I’d never listened to Angra before now, and this is going straight into my collection. Nuff Said. ***1/2
