Mystery are back with their follow-up to 2012′s ‘The World Is A Game’. Since then the band have changed vocalists with Jean Pageau replacing Benoît David, who left to join prog rock legends Yes and has subsequently left them. Mainman Michel St-Père is still firmly at the helm and the band have again succeeded in producing a highly melodic and polished piece of progressive music.
New boy Jean Pageau has a melodious voice, again a little hint of Yes’s Jon Anderson on the higher notes like his predecessor. The shorter songs like ‘The Willow Tree’ are snapshots of melodic bliss, whilst on a longer piece like the title track the band can really stretch their proverbial musical muscles.
Mystery do epic songs so well, as unlike some progressive bands who get lost in a sea of navel gazing soloing, Mystery never lose sight of the song’s main melody. The guitar playing of Michel St-Père is like David Gilmour at times, amazing yet never taking over a song. Special mention to drummer Jean-Sébastien Goyette who unleashes some power when required, such as the heavier passages on ‘A Song For You’. This song has the classic 70′s prog feel of Yes/Kansas in the keyboards especially and a good showcase for Jean Pageau.
Do not let Mystery escape your musical ears as they are one of the best progressive bands out there at the moment and they will appeal to lovers of anything melodic. ****1/2
