Album review: PICTUREHOUSE – How Do I Explain How This Came To Be?

PICTUREHOUSE - How Do I Explain How This Came To Be?

Vinyl/digital release

This album is not so much a best of more a collection of songs, some previously unreleased, that PictureHouse recorded between 1995 and 1998. There are twelve songs in all, with a couple drawn from the ‘Shine Box’ (1996) and ‘Karmarama’ (1998) albums.

If you are looking for a definition of perfect power pop then look no further. PictureHouse revel in jangly guitars, glorious harmonies (both instrumentally and vocally), all topped by the melodic singing of Dave Browne. You can hear this on songs like ‘Built To Last’, ‘Roll Over’ and ‘Fear Of Flying’.

Dave Browne’s vocals really hit the spot emotionally on ‘Moments Like These’, a reminder that we should all enjoy the moment and not wish our lives away.

‘Sunburst’ has been re-released as a single to tie-in with this album and it is the sort of song that can lift your spirits, exactly what good pop songs should do. Perfect for a sunny summer’s day.

PictureHouse made a successful return with 2013′s ‘Evolution’ album and with these songs you get a chance to listen to the band’s earlier years, or if you’re already a fan revisit some well known and lesser known songs. Then, as now, PictureHouse are quite possibly the best power pop band you have yet to hear. So don’t put it off any longer, go listen to them and grab a copy of this on vinyl or digital!  ****1/2
