For a band that have been together, on and off since 1987, Pretty Boy Floyd are one of the few bands from that era that pretty much sound exactly the same as they did 30 years ago. The band have recently released fifth studio album “Public Enemies”- does it sound like a throwback? Yes. Does it sound clichéd? Yes. Is it a good album? Yes.
Featuring original members Steve Summers on vocals and guitarist Kristy Majors, the album was produced by the latter alongside former guitarist Keri Kelli, and is the first album of original material from Pretty Boy Floyd since 2004. Some of the material is a little simple and repetitive in part but back in the band’s past this would have been more than acceptable, with songs like “High School Queen” and “Girls All Over The World” sounding like they could have been lifted from their 1989 debut album ”Leather Boyz With Electric Toyz”.
“Public Enemies” contains the obligatory ballad in the shape of “We Can’t Bring Back Yesterday” (no irony intended) and other highlights amongst the album’s 14 tracks include “Run For Your Life”, “Do You Wanna Rock” and “Star Chaser”. However, it is the studio version of “7 Minutes In Heaven” that is the ultimate highlight here as this has previously only been released as a live version.
Whilst I enjoyed the album and it has an overall fun feel, phrases such as “we’re young” or “we’re wild” and the chasing after teenage girls may have worked when the band were young and wild but when you’re middle aged it does sound a bit wrong. ***
