Frontiers [Release date 13.07.18]
2018 marks 30 years since Mr Big formed, but it also marks the passing of drummer and founder member Pat Torpey, having battled Parkinson’s for many years. He was able to join the band on their recent tour and, although not playing drums for the whole set, he did play on a couple of tracks and happily provided backing vocals and percussion on most of the rest of the songs.
New CD and DVD set “Live In Milan” captures the band, well, live in Milan. Touring in support of recent album “Defying Gravity” the band is in fine form, and the are not settling for a mere nostalgia set here as they play no less than 5 songs from the new album.
I am pleased to say that 3 of my favourite Mr Big songs are performed here – “Take Cover”, “Undertow” and the bands cover of Cat Stevens’ “Wild World” (complete with Eric Martin ad-libbing the line “La, La, La, La, La, fucking awesome”, which did make me smile).
The 20 song set also includes great renditions of “Alive and Kickin’”, “To Be With You”, “Green Tinted Sixties Mind”, “Open Your Eyes”, “1992” and “Addicted To That Rush”. Plus, Billy Sheehan and Paul Gilbert performing their respective bass and guitar solos.
For a band that has been together for 30 years, albeit with a hiatus in the early part of this century, Mr Big still puts on one hell of a show. Hopefully they will keep going, Matt Starr has assisted the band live for the last few years and is a great fit, and this live set is a fitting tribute to Pat Torpey. *****
