Album review: BURNTFIELD – Impermanence

BURNTFIELD - Impermanence

Progressive Gears [Release date 12.11.21]

Hands up all those feeling reflective and romantic?  This band – a Dutch/Finnish hybrid – will provide your soundtrack.

Skip to ‘Trust In You’ an early single/video to give you an idea of the vibe.  A lovely persistent groove that Level 42 would have been proud of.  But don’t let that put you off.  Opener ‘Empty Dream’ should clinch it.  And if not try ‘Back Again’, with its tasty ‘Kashmir’–esque backbeat.

Elsewhere the trio provide a blend of pop prog with the emphasis on the short and snappy.  There’s no extended workouts – save perhaps for ‘The Light’ and certainly the title track – and, if anything, the album is a tad short.  But it’s certainly a case of less wants more.

‘Something Real’ is another great tune with vocalist/bassist/mainman Juho Myllylä joined by Veera-Selina Lajoma.

This is a fine album for the times, ‘Impermanence’ reflects that we are constantly in a state of flux and even with heartbreak and loss there is usually resolution and rebirth.

Burntfield’s music should appeal to those who enjoy atmsopheric and introspective rock such as Katatonia and Anathema, but it’s all fused with a pop and even AOR sensibility right through to the instrumental closer ‘Everything Will Change’.  This is the band’s second album following the debut ‘Hereafter’ in 2018.

Rousing choruses, melancholy and yearning, this is a compulsive album that will strike a chord with anyone who has loved and lost and loved again. Magnificent *****
