Album review: JESS KLEIN – Back To My Green

JESS KLEIN - Back To My Green

Blue Rose Records [Release date 22.02.19]

With 11 albums over two decades to her name, native New York singer songwriter Jess Klein will have no better opportunity to broaden her appeal than with the seemingly insatiable current demand for Americana.

Previous releases have scored well across the pond, without making much of a splash on these shores.  But with a fragile, faint Dolly warble to her vocals, her latest release is an accessible, easy on the ear listen that – while unlikely to set pulses racing – should find favour with those with a liking for folk and country.

It’s her first since marrying, relocating to North Carolina from Austin, Texas, and re-learning her playing/writing style after suffering a repetitive strain injury, and like many of her contemporaries it focuses on the current state of the American nation.

A varied, and understated patchwork of styles, there’s something here for just about everyone – from the radio friendly opener ‘In Dreams’, and the plaintive ‘Tougher Than I Seem’, to the hard hitting ‘Blair Mountain’ and the bluesy acoustic, gospel tinged ‘Gates Of Hell’.

Klein will play a short series of UK dates in April / May 2109. ***1/2
